V-19 Certified for safety and featuring exceptional strength and versatility, this universal adapter converts a fifth-wheel king pin to a gooseneck coupler. This allows you to tow your fifth-wheel trailer without a bulky fifth-wheel hitch. The Ranch Hitch from Andersen Manufacturing is easy to install, even for the inexperienced do-it-yourselfer.

Measuring Your Truck and Trailer for the Ranch Hitch Coupler Adapter

You can perform these steps to determine if the adapter will work for your fifth-wheel trailer.

  1. Back your truck into position as if you were hooking up your fifth-wheel trailer, making sure that the truck and trailer are level.
  2. Measure from the pin plate (the bottom of the pin box) down to the top of the ball in the bed of your truck.
  3. The measurement should fall between 11-3/4" and 14-3/4". (The adapter is 11-3/4" tall when fully compressed and 14-3/4" tall when fully extended.)

Additional Measurements

Five or six inches of clearance between the overhang of the trailer and siderails of your truck is necessary for safe operation.

Diagram of pin box showing where to measure length

Measuring for Pin Box Length

The Ranch Hitch adapter is designed for trailers with a standard or extended pin box up to 24" long (measured diagonally). To find this dimension, you should measure from the centerline of the bottom of the king pin into the back of the pin box as far as you can reach. You may not be able to reach the very back of the pin box itself because the top of it may extend into the trailer. In this case measure to where the pin box disappears into the trailer.

Rate your transcript OrderClientKevin BrossRef #20638Order #TC0791104070 Today, we'll be reviewing part number: AM3139. This is the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter with the 8-inch Offset. It is designed for short bed trucks. The heavy duty adapter is going to convert your 5th-wheel trailer kingpins to a gooseneck coupler. It's going to conveniently allow 5th-wheel camping trailer to be towed with the gooseneck hitch. It's got the 8-inch offset so that is designed for short bed trucks. It's going to provide some extra clearance between the overhang of your trailer and the cab of your truck for easier turning.

It's also going to feature the remote coupler release that's going to let you engage and release the coupler which is this portion here while standing alongside your trucks so there's no need to have to climb in to the truck bed and underneath your gooseneck to detach its coupler. You can do it with remote access. So it's just going to limit that need to climb in and out of the truck bed. This is going to offer a 3-inch vertical adjustment. This is going to allow towing with multiple vehicles.

You see how this portion here just slides up and down the post Again, a 3-inch adjustment. It's a do-it-yourself installation. They say that it should take about an hour or less. This will work with standard 2-5/16 inch diameter gooseneck hitch balls. It is V-19 certified. And to make your install easier, one of the two is going to be required, either a gear puller or a slide hammer.

We have slide hammers here at etrailer.com. You can find that on our website using part number: AM3103. Again, this is designed to fit a standard 2-5/16 inch gooseneck hitch ball. It is designed to work in short bed trucks especially those that need more clearance between the truck and the trailer when towing. The measurement from the bottom of the kingpin plate to the top of the hitch ball, which would be in this portion here when it's inside the coupler area, it's going to measure 11-3/4 of an inch and that's when it's fully collapsed. When it is fully extended, so you have that 3-inch adjustment.

It's going to increase it by 3 inches so it's going to move it to 14-3/4 of an inch. The required clearance between the overhang of the trailer and the top of the side rails of your truck for safe operation is going to be 5 or 6 inches. This is designed for trailers with standard or extended pin boxes. The extended pin boxes longer than 30 inches measured diagonally may need additional reinforcing gussets added to the pin box. This system here is going to offer a capacity of 24,000 pounds for gross towing weight and a maximum of towing weight of 6000 pounds. Again, you have that 3-inch vertical adjustment. You have the set screws out here so you can tighten those down when you get it set to where you need it. The hardware is included that you need, but again, the slide hammer or the gear puller, those are going to be separate. So you got the remote here . the quick-release system. You're also going to have the collar portion here. So this is what we call the split collets. This goes over the indented portion of the kingpin. You're going to have some self-tapping screws and washers and nuts. You're also going to have the wrench here. This is going to help you doing your installation. You got some more washers. And you got the eye bolt. The eye bolt is provided as a way to attach your trailer's breakaway cable to your tow vehicle. So the way this works . again, you have the spinner wrench. The threaded collar is actually set in this portion here. So in the instructions you're going to see where it says you need to locate the threaded portion, that's going to be inside here. So you're going to take that out. The reason why they already installed that into that portion is because they dont want it to get . they dont want the threads to get damaged during shipping. So you just slide that threaded collar over the kingpin and while holding the collar up, you'll place the split collets around the narrow neck of the kingpin and then you'll slide that threaded collar down over the split collets and pull it tight and that's where the slide hammer or the gear puller is going to come in handy. Then you can take the adapter base, which is going to be this black portion here, and you're going to thread it clockwise onto the seated collar. And once then base is tight, you can torque it to the manufacturer's specifications then you can install the four bolts up top. You're going to have eight mounting options but only four bolts need to be installed to get it set correctly. Again, you have the eye bolt for the breakaway cable and a couple of things. The safety chains are going to be sold separately but all the hardware that you need for the installation is included so you should be set to go. When it comes to measuring your truck and trailer for the Ranch Hitch Coupler Adapter, you want to back your truck into position as if you are hooking up your 5th-wheel trailer making sure that the truck and the trailer are both level and then you want to measure from the pin plate which is going to be the bottom of the pin box down to the top of the ball in the bed of your truck. The measurement should fall between 11-3/4 of an inch and 14-3/4 of an inch. If it does fall in between there, then this is going to be a great option for your application. That's going to do it for our review of part number: AM3139. This is the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter. .

After having this on my (small) 5th wheel travel trailer for more than 2 years, I have discovered the major problem with it... Because the hitch point is so much lower, it has created unusual leverage over the kingpin box and now my trailer frame is cracking :( Your trailer must be VERY shored up around the kingpin box to resist the extension of torque by essentially making your kingpin box much longer. I loved the idea of not having a 5th hitch in the box of my truck and the removable gooseneck ball instead, but I now know that a complete change-out of the kingpin box to a gooseneck hitch would have been more reliable. I am now in Mexico with a cracked trailer frame due to this :( 325391

I have been using the Ranch Hitch #3100 Straight Adapter for 3 years. Converting the 5th wheel to goose neck was awesome. Much easier to hook up and a smoother, quieter pull. After purchasing a new trailer I noticed that the trailer was too close to the cab of my short bed truck. I found the Ranch Hitch #3139 with 8" offset adapter. It installs easy and gives me 8 more inches away from my truck cab. Excellent! Turning corners is much more comfortable! 111386

How do I install this? Do I have to drill holes? How long does it take?
-- comment by: Randy - 05/30/2014

There is a threaded collar that goes around the king-pin. The Ranch hitch is threaded on to the collar and tightened to 400 ft. lbs. Then you will either drill 4 holes into the pin box and install bolts, or use four 1-inch tack welds to weld the Ranch Hitch to the the pin box. This is a relatively permanent install.

Very heavy and solid. Quick install time. No disappointments, even shipped quick. Trailer pulled nice as well. Would recommend to anyone. I bought this because my Mega cab already had a gooseneck ball in the bed and I found a fifth wheel camper at a steal of a price. Adapter was extremely cheap in price but still a sturdy quality product. Converted the camper to gooseneck, and can still convert back if needed. Scott from PA. 636706

This product is great and just what I was looking for at the time. It was fairly easy to attach to the king pin to convert it to a goose neck ball which is what I already had in my truck bed. It attaches rely solid and can easily meet the 24000 lb rating I am sure. Being a short bed truck this hitch had the 8" offset which has the same effect as a 5th wheel slider hitch. The only problem with the offset is it puts the angular body of the trailer hitch closer to the side walls of the bed. Also when I remove the offset portion it also helps deter theft as there is nothing to hitch to! I have since bought a long bed diesel truck so I will be buying the straight adapter soon. 371861

Product shipped right away and arrived way sooner than I was anticipating. Installation was easy - however the only thing that needs to be accounted for is the length of the shaft. It made the trailer ride tipped back and had to do some modifications to make it work perfectly. Construction of the product was good and it did exactly what I needed to accomplish Would recommend . 358743

Purchased this gooseneck hitch to convert my fifth wheel travel trailer to a gooseneck. This product is easily attached to the fifth wheel king pin and attaches very solid. The hitch release cable makes it simple to secure and release from your ball. I am very satisfied with my choice in purchasing this product and would highly recommend it. I have purchased this and other products from etrailer and have always received the best service. 347375

Installed this hitch adapter on a small-ish fifth wheel trailer (2007 arctic fox 21-5R). I've waited to review now that I've finished pulling the trailer through the Canadian Rocky mountains to Vancouver island and back ~4000km or 2500 Miles. The hitch installed fairly easily in about 2 hours, with careful attention to centering and torque specifications. The hitch performed as it should throughout my recent trip, no problems with function whatsoever. The only downside I see with this hitch adapter is the need to raise the trailer a few inches higher each time you hitch/unhitch, in order to clear the gooseneck ball. Also, when nearing a full 90 degree angle between truck & trailer, the pin box may rub against the bed rails. This is partly due to the ride height of my truck. Otherwise, excellent solution for avoiding the Fifth wheel hitch in your truck box! Picture attached, dodge 3500 regular 6 foot box (levelling kit, 35" wheels) with arctic fox fifth wheel trailer. No modifications to trailer other than the ranch hitch adapter with offset for short box truck. 154339

Product works great. Me and my 14 year old son put it on our camper in about 30 minutes. If you can't bolt it to the camper hitch system like the directions recommend, make sure you weld it on as the alternative directions say. 100293

  • Easier Way to Access Fifth Wheel Hitch on Flatbed Truck
There is no extension for a fifth wheel hitch handle to let you access it from a distance. The best solution for you would be to use something like the Thule Step Up Wheel Step # TH232, assuming your flatbed does not jut out over the tires too significantly. Otherwise a simple step stool such as # PA-202 is your best option.

The absolute best solution that I can recommend for you would be a bit of an elaborate solution. But for towing a fifth wheel trailer with a truck with a 5-1/2 foot bed it's honestly the only viable solution. You are going to need to replace your B and W gooseneck hitch with a set of fifth wheel rails so that you can use a stationary hitch and a Sidewinder pin box on your trailer. It is the only way you'll be able to make tight turns. Sidewinders are pin box specific so you will first...

I attached an install video for more info for you to check out.

  • Can a Ranch Hitch Offset 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter be Used on a 2010 GMC 1500 Crew Cab
You can use the Ranch Hitch Fifth-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter with 8 Inch Offset, # AM3139, to tow your fifth wheel trailer with your 2010 GMC 1500 Short Bed. This coupler adapter will provide additional clearance when turning than what you would have with a coupler adapter without an offset, however, it is not designed to prevent contact between your truck cab and trailer when making a 90 degree turn. If you are looking for a product that will allow you to safely execute a 90...

  • Adapter to Allow Towing 5th Wheel Trailer with Gooseneck Hitch in 2004 Ford F-350
There are several types of adapters to allow towing a 5th wheel trailer with a truck that is equipped with a gooseneck hitch. These vary in the amount of stress they will place on the trailer frame and also in the ride quality they deliver. Some offer a permanent long-term solution while others are suitable for short-distance or one-time use to move a trailer to its new location. I suggest you start with a review of the article linked at right, which shows and explains the various types...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for a 2015 Ford F250 Super Duty with Short Bed
With gooseneck adapters like the part # AM3139 that have an offset built into them you cannot use an offset adapter like the part # 19308 that you referenced. The reason for this is that it will end up putting too much stress on the pin box of the trailer. Although we have never heard of any instances where an adapter like this caused an issue for a trailer's pin box when used long term we are aware that they don't recommend these for permanent long term use for the reason you listed....

  • Measuring for Clearance to Tow a 2011 Sierra 5th Wheel Trailer with a 2008 Dodge Ram Crew Cab
When using 5th wheel installation kit, # RP50140-58, the king pin will be centered over the rear axle, so that 36 inch measurement you provide is correct. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view. In order to determine how much clearance you will have or need, there is a simple formula. First, you take the 36 inches and subtract from that half the width of the 5th wheel overhang, in this case we will say it is 49 inches. So 36 minus 49 equals -13. You need...

  • Where to Position D-Ring Tie Downs in Truck Bed for Use with Safety Chains
Thank you for your photo of your truck's bed and your inverted 5th wheel hitch. Since your goose neck safety chain points are blocked by the inverted 5th wheel you'll want to install D-ring tie downs as close to them as possible, making sure that there is a reinforcing plate or other structural material strong enough to serve as a mounting point. The best spot would be just to the outside of the existing chain connection points. Although chains are not required for 5th wheel trailers it...

  • Is Offset 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Hitch Adapter Needed for More Space Between Truck and Trailer
First, you could replace the tailgate on your truck with a 5th wheel tailgate so you will not have to worry about opening it and closing it all the time. We have several options that will fit your 2006 Ford F-350 and I have included a link to them for you to the right. The Ranch Hitch # AM3139 should not be used if the diagonal measurement of the pin box is more than 24 inches. This can create excessive stress on the set up. A similar product, # CAB-C5GX1216, does not have the same restriction...

  • How Many Bolts are Used to Attach the Andersen Ranch Hitch to a 5th Wheel Trailer
You will use 4 grade 8 bolts (included) to attach the Ranch Hitch # AM3139 to the trailer pin box. There are 8 holes in the base of the Ranch Hitch but you will only use the 4 best located holes for your trailer. The adapter is also threaded onto a special piece that fits around the trailer king pin so it is held on to the trailer in more than 1 way for additional security.

  • How To Measure For Correct 5th Wheel To Gooseneck Adapter on 2003 Chevrolet 2500HD Short Bed
To determine the correct hitch that you will need for your 2003 Chevrolet 2500HD Duramax short bed to safely execute 90 degree turns when towing your Komfort Fifth Wheel trailer, you need to take the width of your trailer and divide by two. Then measure from the gooseneck hitch ball in the truck to the back of the truck cab and that dimension should be 4 inches more than your first measurement for correct clearance. For example, if your trailer measures 96 inches wide, take half (48...

  • Which Gooseneck Adapter is Best for My 2016 Dodge Ram 2500
I do have an adapter option for you but first let me explain why we do not recommend the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned Adapter # CAB-C5GX1216. The gooseneck ball that is part of your OEM prep package has a plastic lever used to unlock and remove the ball. Inside the Convert-A-Ball adapter the shape is not completely round. The top is flatter than others causing the gooseneck ball to rub against the inside of the adapter and it will end up damaging the plastic lever. The Ranch Hitch Universal...

  • Will the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Offset Adapter Work on a 2012 Chevy Silverado
The Ranch Hitch Universal Fifth Wheel to Gooseneck Offset Adapter, # AM3139, will technically work with your 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Short Bed as long as you have a gooseneck ball in your truck bed, but it will not prevent your trailer from hitting the cab of your truck when making sharp turns. The main purpose of an offset gooseneck adapter is to create more space between the back of a truck bed and the trailer, not between the trailer and the cab of the truck. If your primary...

  • Towing 5th Wheel Trailer with 2014 Ford F-150 with 5-1/2-Foot Bed
Thank you for the photo of your new 5th wheel trailer showing its front profile. Very short bed pickups like your 5-1/2-foot bed must use a Sidewinder replacement pin box to have enough turning clearance to avoid cab-to-overhang contact. 6-1/2-foot beds can use a slider type hitch for turning clearance but a 5-1/2-foot bed cannot get by with extenders. You will need to replace the pin box on the trailer with a Sidewinder pin box that extends the pivot point by a full 22-inches and use...
