V-19 Certified for safety and featuring exceptional strength and versatility, this universal adapter converts a fifth-wheel king pin to a gooseneck coupler. This allows you to tow your fifth-wheel trailer without a bulky fifth-wheel hitch. The Ranch Hitch from Andersen Manufacturing is easy to install, even for the inexperienced do-it-yourselfer.

Measuring Your Truck and Trailer for the Ranch Hitch Coupler Adapter

You can perform these steps to determine if the adapter will work for your fifth-wheel trailer.

  1. Back your truck into position as if you were hooking up your fifth-wheel trailer, making sure that the truck and trailer are level.
  2. Measure from the pin plate (the bottom of the pin box) down to the top of the ball in the bed of your truck.
  3. The measurement should fall between 11-3/4" and 14-3/4". (The adapter is 11-3/4" tall when fully compressed and 14-3/4" tall when fully extended.)

Additional Measurements

Five or six inches of clearance between the overhang of the trailer and siderails of your truck is necessary for safe operation.

Diagram of pin box showing where to measure length

Measuring for Pin Box Length

The Ranch Hitch adapter is designed for trailers with a standard or extended pin box up to 24" long (measured diagonally). To find this dimension, you should measure from the centerline of the bottom of the king pin into the back of the pin box as far as you can reach. You may not be able to reach the very back of the pin box itself because the top of it may extend into the trailer. In this case measure to where the pin box disappears into the trailer.

Video Transcript for Andersen Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters - Adapts Trailer - AM3139 Review

Rate your transcript OrderClientKevin BrossRef #20638Order #TC0791104070 Today, we'll be reviewing part number: AM3139. This is the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter with the 8-inch Offset. It is designed for short bed trucks. The heavy duty adapter is going to convert your 5th-wheel trailer kingpins to a gooseneck coupler. It's going to conveniently allow 5th-wheel camping trailer to be towed with the gooseneck hitch. It's got the 8-inch offset so that is designed for short bed trucks. It's going to provide some extra clearance between the overhang of your trailer and the cab of your truck for easier turning.

It's also going to feature the remote coupler release that's going to let you engage and release the coupler which is this portion here while standing alongside your trucks so there's no need to have to climb in to the truck bed and underneath your gooseneck to detach its coupler. You can do it with remote access. So it's just going to limit that need to climb in and out of the truck bed. This is going to offer a 3-inch vertical adjustment. This is going to allow towing with multiple vehicles.

You see how this portion here just slides up and down the post Again, a 3-inch adjustment. It's a do-it-yourself installation. They say that it should take about an hour or less. This will work with standard 2-5/16 inch diameter gooseneck hitch balls. It is V-19 certified. And to make your install easier, one of the two is going to be required, either a gear puller or a slide hammer.

We have slide hammers here at etrailer.com. You can find that on our website using part number: AM3103. Again, this is designed to fit a standard 2-5/16 inch gooseneck hitch ball. It is designed to work in short bed trucks especially those that need more clearance between the truck and the trailer when towing. The measurement from the bottom of the kingpin plate to the top of the hitch ball, which would be in this portion here when it's inside the coupler area, it's going to measure 11-3/4 of an inch and that's when it's fully collapsed. When it is fully extended, so you have that 3-inch adjustment.

It's going to increase it by 3 inches so it's going to move it to 14-3/4 of an inch. The required clearance between the overhang of the trailer and the top of the side rails of your truck for safe operation is going to be 5 or 6 inches. This is designed for trailers with standard or extended pin boxes. The extended pin boxes longer than 30 inches measured diagonally may need additional reinforcing gussets added to the pin box. This system here is going to offer a capacity of 24,000 pounds for gross towing weight and a maximum of towing weight of 6000 pounds. Again, you have that 3-inch vertical adjustment. You have the set screws out here so you can tighten those down when you get it set to where you need it. The hardware is included that you need, but again, the slide hammer or the gear puller, those are going to be separate. So you got the remote here . the quick-release system. You're also going to have the collar portion here. So this is what we call the split collets. This goes over the indented portion of the kingpin. You're going to have some self-tapping screws and washers and nuts. You're also going to have the wrench here. This is going to help you doing your installation. You got some more washers. And you got the eye bolt. The eye bolt is provided as a way to attach your trailer's breakaway cable to your tow vehicle. So the way this works . again, you have the spinner wrench. The threaded collar is actually set in this portion here. So in the instructions you're going to see where it says you need to locate the threaded portion, that's going to be inside here. So you're going to take that out. The reason why they already installed that into that portion is because they dont want it to get . they dont want the threads to get damaged during shipping. So you just slide that threaded collar over the kingpin and while holding the collar up, you'll place the split collets around the narrow neck of the kingpin and then you'll slide that threaded collar down over the split collets and pull it tight and that's where the slide hammer or the gear puller is going to come in handy. Then you can take the adapter base, which is going to be this black portion here, and you're going to thread it clockwise onto the seated collar. And once then base is tight, you can torque it to the manufacturer's specifications then you can install the four bolts up top. You're going to have eight mounting options but only four bolts need to be installed to get it set correctly. Again, you have the eye bolt for the breakaway cable and a couple of things. The safety chains are going to be sold separately but all the hardware that you need for the installation is included so you should be set to go. When it comes to measuring your truck and trailer for the Ranch Hitch Coupler Adapter, you want to back your truck into position as if you are hooking up your 5th-wheel trailer making sure that the truck and the trailer are both level and then you want to measure from the pin plate which is going to be the bottom of the pin box down to the top of the ball in the bed of your truck. The measurement should fall between 11-3/4 of an inch and 14-3/4 of an inch. If it does fall in between there, then this is going to be a great option for your application. That's going to do it for our review of part number: AM3139. This is the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter. .

After having this on my (small) 5th wheel travel trailer for more than 2 years, I have discovered the major problem with it... Because the hitch point is so much lower, it has created unusual leverage over the kingpin box and now my trailer frame is cracking :( Your trailer must be VERY shored up around the kingpin box to resist the extension of torque by essentially making your kingpin box much longer. I loved the idea of not having a 5th hitch in the box of my truck and the removable gooseneck ball instead, but I now know that a complete change-out of the kingpin box to a gooseneck hitch would have been more reliable. I am now in Mexico with a cracked trailer frame due to this :( 325391

I have been using the Ranch Hitch #3100 Straight Adapter for 3 years. Converting the 5th wheel to goose neck was awesome. Much easier to hook up and a smoother, quieter pull. After purchasing a new trailer I noticed that the trailer was too close to the cab of my short bed truck. I found the Ranch Hitch #3139 with 8" offset adapter. It installs easy and gives me 8 more inches away from my truck cab. Excellent! Turning corners is much more comfortable! 111386

How do I install this? Do I have to drill holes? How long does it take?

-- comment by: Randy - 05/30/2014

There is a threaded collar that goes around the king-pin. The Ranch hitch is threaded on to the collar and tightened to 400 ft. lbs. Then you will either drill 4 holes into the pin box and install bolts, or use four 1-inch tack welds to weld the Ranch Hitch to the the pin box. This is a relatively permanent install.

Very heavy and solid. Quick install time. No disappointments, even shipped quick. Trailer pulled nice as well. Would recommend to anyone. I bought this because my Mega cab already had a gooseneck ball in the bed and I found a fifth wheel camper at a steal of a price. Adapter was extremely cheap in price but still a sturdy quality product. Converted the camper to gooseneck, and can still convert back if needed. Scott from PA. 636706

This product is great and just what I was looking for at the time. It was fairly easy to attach to the king pin to convert it to a goose neck ball which is what I already had in my truck bed. It attaches rely solid and can easily meet the 24000 lb rating I am sure. Being a short bed truck this hitch had the 8" offset which has the same effect as a 5th wheel slider hitch. The only problem with the offset is it puts the angular body of the trailer hitch closer to the side walls of the bed. Also when I remove the offset portion it also helps deter theft as there is nothing to hitch to! I have since bought a long bed diesel truck so I will be buying the straight adapter soon. 371861

Product shipped right away and arrived way sooner than I was anticipating. Installation was easy - however the only thing that needs to be accounted for is the length of the shaft. It made the trailer ride tipped back and had to do some modifications to make it work perfectly. Construction of the product was good and it did exactly what I needed to accomplish Would recommend . 358743

Purchased this gooseneck hitch to convert my fifth wheel travel trailer to a gooseneck. This product is easily attached to the fifth wheel king pin and attaches very solid. The hitch release cable makes it simple to secure and release from your ball. I am very satisfied with my choice in purchasing this product and would highly recommend it. I have purchased this and other products from etrailer and have always received the best service. 347375

Installed this hitch adapter on a small-ish fifth wheel trailer (2007 arctic fox 21-5R). I've waited to review now that I've finished pulling the trailer through the Canadian Rocky mountains to Vancouver island and back ~4000km or 2500 Miles. The hitch installed fairly easily in about 2 hours, with careful attention to centering and torque specifications. The hitch performed as it should throughout my recent trip, no problems with function whatsoever. The only downside I see with this hitch adapter is the need to raise the trailer a few inches higher each time you hitch/unhitch, in order to clear the gooseneck ball. Also, when nearing a full 90 degree angle between truck & trailer, the pin box may rub against the bed rails. This is partly due to the ride height of my truck. Otherwise, excellent solution for avoiding the Fifth wheel hitch in your truck box! Picture attached, dodge 3500 regular 6 foot box (levelling kit, 35" wheels) with arctic fox fifth wheel trailer. No modifications to trailer other than the ranch hitch adapter with offset for short box truck. 154339

Product works great. Me and my 14 year old son put it on our camper in about 30 minutes. If you can't bolt it to the camper hitch system like the directions recommend, make sure you weld it on as the alternative directions say. 100293

I still have to drill four holes and I had to rent a puller for $6.00 but so far I am impressed with how easy the installation was, but ask me again in two weeks when I have to move my fifth wheel, But for the price, and design compared to other adaptors, I have no complaints. Just not sure how well it will work with the offset. 91062

Works great, for what I need. I do prefer the fifth wheel hitch, but did not want to put the rails in my truck for that hitch. I do have to use the backup balls and my camera for the goose neck hitch but its not too bad.

The folks at etrailer arranged faster shipping that advertised at no charge and the adapter arrived lots quicker than expected. The product is obviously better than the former adapter. Lots heaver and the ball receiver is easier to center above the ball. Two EXCELLENT pieces of advice were included in the instructions. One was about bracing the hitch to prevent damage or coming loose from the trailer. The best advice regarded surging, or chucking. My previous adapter did both and neither a trailer manufacturer nor the RV people who sold and installed it could diagnose or fix the problem. This issue for me is important in that I have 3 fused vertebrae and stenosis. As usual, RanchHand is leading the pack! I have a RanchHand "cowcatcher" bumper and it has done the job really well also. Excellent product, Superb Advice! Many Thanks! Truman Powell Tyler, Texas 22844

  • Usually on a Ford F-250 long bed (8 foot) truck an offset gooseneck adapter is not necessary, but you can measure to see if you would need one. To determine the clearance needed on your F-250 long bed, you need to take the width of your trailer and divide by two. Then measure from the gooseneck hitch ball in the truck to the back of the truck cab. That dimension should be 4 inches more than your first measurement for correct clearance. For example, if your trailer measures 96 inches...

  • Recommended 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter For Flatbed Truck Towing Fifth Wheel Trailer
  • To determine if the Ranch Hitch Fifth-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter with 8 Inch Offset, # AM3139, that you referenced will allow you to tow your fifth wheel trailer without hitting the back corner of your truck bed, you will need to know the distance between the center of the gooseneck ball to the back corner of your truck bed. By using this coupler adapter, you will gain 8 inches from the center of your gooseneck hitch ball to your fifth wheel trailer. Based on the measurements that you...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Hitch Adapter for a Short Bed Truck
  • As long as you have a standard extended pin box that does not measure to be more than 24" long (see photo) then I recommend using the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter part # AM3139. This adapter has an 8" offset which will be ideal for short bed trucks. It also has 3" of vertical adjustments if you will be towing with multiple vehicles. The adapter is very easy to install which should take around an hour but you will need the slide hammer part # AM3103 for installation....

  • Using Ranch Hitch Gooseneck Adapter # AM3139 to Tow 5th Wheel with 1999 F250 Short Bed
  • Although having the 5th wheel perfectly level when hitched up on flat ground would be the ideal scenario, using the Ranch Hitch you mentioned, part # AM3139 would only raise the front of your 5th wheel up 1-1/4 inches above level, which is certainly close enough and would not cause any problems. To determine if the adapter will allow you to make 90 degree turns without the trailer corner hitting the rear of your truck cab, you can use the formula shown in the provided diagram. I have...

  • Will the Ranch Hitch Fifth Wheel Adapter Work with a Lifted Truck
  • If your trailer sits up high enough to allow your trailer to be towed level by your truck with a 6-1/2 inch lift and still have 6 inches of clearance between the bedrails and the overhang then the Ranch Hitch part # AM3139 would work just fine. However, most likely your truck will sit too tall for a fifth wheel trailer to be towed level behind it since you have such a large lift kit. Typically if you want to do any towing you will need a stock height truck.

  • Offset Gooseneck Compatibility with Ford OEM Gooseneck Hitch
  • Unfortunately there is not an offset ball option compatible with the Ford Factory hitch. The only gooseneck hitch with that offset option is the B&W Turnoverball. To give you additional clearance when towing, I recommend the B&W Extend-A-Goose Gooseneck Coupler - 2-5/16" Ball - 10" Offset - 24,000 lbs # BWTEXA4200. If you are towing a 5th wheel with this gooseneck hitch, then the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter w/8" Offset for Short-Bed Trucks # AM3139....

  • Type of Gooseneck Hitch That Uses a Cable to Release the Hitch Ball
  • I know of the PopUp and Cody brands of gooseneck hitches that use a cable ball release mechanism, and also of adapters from Ranch Hitch that use a cable release, such as their # AM3100 and # AM3139. These adapters are for use when pulling a 5th wheel trailer with a gooseneck hitch. The cable on these adapters releases the adapter base from the gooseneck ball.

  • Fifth Wheel Trailer Adapter to Tow the Trailer with a Gooseneck Hitch in a 2014 Ram Short Bed
  • We don't carry a Reese adapter in that style but I do have a solution for you. Since your 2014 Ram is a short bed I suggest the Andersen # AM3139 adapter because it has an offset. The offset will help with clearance when executing sharp turns. If you also need the safety chains to work with the adapter use # AM3109.

  • What is Height Adjustment Range for Andersen Ultimate Connection Adapter part # AM3139
  • The Andersen Ultimate Connection Adapter part # AM3139 that you referenced is height adjustable from 13-1/2 inches to 16 inches. I attached a picture that shows more info on this adapters dimensions as well as shows where the maximum height adjustment line is. The height is set using the two set screws that thread through the outer tube of the adapter and then squeeze the inner tube.

  • Is an Offset Adapter Needed to Tow a 5th Wheel with a Gooseneck Hitch on a 2011 Ram 2500 Short Bed
  • You will need to do some measuring to determine if you will need an adapter with offset or not, or if you will even be able to tow a 5th wheel trailer with your gooseneck hitch. Here is how to determine if an offset would be required. First, measure from the center of the hitch in the bed of the truck, and add any amount of extension from the front of the trailer to the center of the king pin on your fifth-wheel trailer. If the king pin is recessed under the front of the trailer subtract...

  • Will Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement Improve Bucking on Ford F-150 with 5th Wheel Trailer
  • A lot of the bucking and feedback issues you are having when towing your 5th Wheel with your 2016 F-150 may be happening as a result of the 8 inch Ranch Hitch Offset # AM3139 you referenced in your question. The offset you are using pushes the tongue weight of your setup further back, which can result in a lot of the movement you are experiencing. Other than switching to an actual 5th Wheel Hitch, such as the B&W Companion w/ Slider, part # BWRVK3400-5W, which is an adapter hitch that...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Solution for 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 for Turn Clearance
  • The Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter w/8" Offset # AM3139 is legal for use on fifth wheel trailers as long as the weight of the trailer is under it's 24k capacity. You can not use an offset ball adapter as well as this though as that would put too much leverage on the hitch/trailer. Your trailer being 8k means it would be fine from that point of view. The problem with this adapter is that it does not move the pivot point of the trailer back at all so you are...

  • Will Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter AM3139 Fit 2004 Ford F350
  • The Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler, part # AM3139 you referenced would be a fit for your 2004 Ford F350 Super Duty. This is a heavy duty coupler with a weight capacity of 24000 lbs and a tongue weight capacity of 6000 lbs, and has a remote coupler release and fits standard 2-5/16 inch gooseneck balls. If clearance on tight turns is what you are hoping to accomplish, this adapter will give you a minimal amount of additional clearance on turns. It will not allow you...

  • Do 5th Wheel Trailers Require the Use of Safety Chains
  • No, 5th wheel trailer connections do not require safety chains. Consumer 5th wheel applications connect to the truck the same way that big rigs connect to trailers and this is considered a secure enough connection to not require safety chains. Items that connect to a ball do require safety chains. So if you are using the Ranch Hitch adapter # AM3139 as an example, you would need safety chains. You can then use the safety chain attachment, # AM3109. You can also check the laws in your...
