V-19 Certified for safety and featuring exceptional strength and versatility, this universal adapter converts a fifth-wheel king pin to a gooseneck coupler. This allows you to tow your fifth-wheel trailer without a bulky fifth-wheel hitch. The Ranch Hitch from Andersen Manufacturing is easy to install, even for the inexperienced do-it-yourselfer.

Measuring Your Truck and Trailer for the Ranch Hitch Coupler Adapter

You can perform these steps to determine if the adapter will work for your fifth-wheel trailer.

  1. Back your truck into position as if you were hooking up your fifth-wheel trailer, making sure that the truck and trailer are level.
  2. Measure from the pin plate (the bottom of the pin box) down to the top of the ball in the bed of your truck.
  3. The measurement should fall between 11-3/4" and 14-3/4". (The adapter is 11-3/4" tall when fully compressed and 14-3/4" tall when fully extended.)

Additional Measurements

Five or six inches of clearance between the overhang of the trailer and siderails of your truck is necessary for safe operation.

Diagram of pin box showing where to measure length

Measuring for Pin Box Length

The Ranch Hitch adapter is designed for trailers with a standard or extended pin box up to 24" long (measured diagonally). To find this dimension, you should measure from the centerline of the bottom of the king pin into the back of the pin box as far as you can reach. You may not be able to reach the very back of the pin box itself because the top of it may extend into the trailer. In this case measure to where the pin box disappears into the trailer.

Video Transcript for Andersen Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters AM3139 Review

Rate your transcript OrderClientKevin BrossRef #20638Order #TC0791104070 Today, we'll be reviewing part number: AM3139. This is the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter with the 8-inch Offset. It is designed for short bed trucks. The heavy duty adapter is going to convert your 5th-wheel trailer kingpins to a gooseneck coupler. It's going to conveniently allow 5th-wheel camping trailer to be towed with the gooseneck hitch. It's got the 8-inch offset so that is designed for short bed trucks. It's going to provide some extra clearance between the overhang of your trailer and the cab of your truck for easier turning.

It's also going to feature the remote coupler release that's going to let you engage and release the coupler which is this portion here while standing alongside your trucks so there's no need to have to climb in to the truck bed and underneath your gooseneck to detach its coupler. You can do it with remote access. So it's just going to limit that need to climb in and out of the truck bed. This is going to offer a 3-inch vertical adjustment. This is going to allow towing with multiple vehicles.

You see how this portion here just slides up and down the post Again, a 3-inch adjustment. It's a do-it-yourself installation. They say that it should take about an hour or less. This will work with standard 2-5/16 inch diameter gooseneck hitch balls. It is V-19 certified. And to make your install easier, one of the two is going to be required, either a gear puller or a slide hammer.

We have slide hammers here at etrailer.com. You can find that on our website using part number: AM3103. Again, this is designed to fit a standard 2-5/16 inch gooseneck hitch ball. It is designed to work in short bed trucks especially those that need more clearance between the truck and the trailer when towing. The measurement from the bottom of the kingpin plate to the top of the hitch ball, which would be in this portion here when it's inside the coupler area, it's going to measure 11-3/4 of an inch and that's when it's fully collapsed. When it is fully extended, so you have that 3-inch adjustment.

It's going to increase it by 3 inches so it's going to move it to 14-3/4 of an inch. The required clearance between the overhang of the trailer and the top of the side rails of your truck for safe operation is going to be 5 or 6 inches. This is designed for trailers with standard or extended pin boxes. The extended pin boxes longer than 30 inches measured diagonally may need additional reinforcing gussets added to the pin box. This system here is going to offer a capacity of 24,000 pounds for gross towing weight and a maximum of towing weight of 6000 pounds. Again, you have that 3-inch vertical adjustment. You have the set screws out here so you can tighten those down when you get it set to where you need it. The hardware is included that you need, but again, the slide hammer or the gear puller, those are going to be separate. So you got the remote here . the quick-release system. You're also going to have the collar portion here. So this is what we call the split collets. This goes over the indented portion of the kingpin. You're going to have some self-tapping screws and washers and nuts. You're also going to have the wrench here. This is going to help you doing your installation. You got some more washers. And you got the eye bolt. The eye bolt is provided as a way to attach your trailer's breakaway cable to your tow vehicle. So the way this works . again, you have the spinner wrench. The threaded collar is actually set in this portion here. So in the instructions you're going to see where it says you need to locate the threaded portion, that's going to be inside here. So you're going to take that out. The reason why they already installed that into that portion is because they dont want it to get . they dont want the threads to get damaged during shipping. So you just slide that threaded collar over the kingpin and while holding the collar up, you'll place the split collets around the narrow neck of the kingpin and then you'll slide that threaded collar down over the split collets and pull it tight and that's where the slide hammer or the gear puller is going to come in handy. Then you can take the adapter base, which is going to be this black portion here, and you're going to thread it clockwise onto the seated collar. And once then base is tight, you can torque it to the manufacturer's specifications then you can install the four bolts up top. You're going to have eight mounting options but only four bolts need to be installed to get it set correctly. Again, you have the eye bolt for the breakaway cable and a couple of things. The safety chains are going to be sold separately but all the hardware that you need for the installation is included so you should be set to go. When it comes to measuring your truck and trailer for the Ranch Hitch Coupler Adapter, you want to back your truck into position as if you are hooking up your 5th-wheel trailer making sure that the truck and the trailer are both level and then you want to measure from the pin plate which is going to be the bottom of the pin box down to the top of the ball in the bed of your truck. The measurement should fall between 11-3/4 of an inch and 14-3/4 of an inch. If it does fall in between there, then this is going to be a great option for your application. That's going to do it for our review of part number: AM3139. This is the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter. .

Installed this hitch adapter on a small-ish fifth wheel trailer (2007 arctic fox 21-5R). I've waited to review now that I've finished pulling the trailer through the Canadian Rocky mountains to Vancouver island and back ~4000km or 2500 Miles. The hitch installed fairly easily in about 2 hours, with careful attention to centering and torque specifications. The hitch performed as it should throughout my recent trip, no problems with function whatsoever. The only downside I see with this hitch adapter is the need to raise the trailer a few inches higher each time you hitch/unhitch, in order to clear the gooseneck ball. Also, when nearing a full 90 degree angle between truck & trailer, the pin box may rub against the bed rails. This is partly due to the ride height of my truck. Otherwise, excellent solution for avoiding the Fifth wheel hitch in your truck box! Picture attached, dodge 3500 regular 6 foot box (levelling kit, 35" wheels) with arctic fox fifth wheel trailer. No modifications to trailer other than the ranch hitch adapter with offset for short box truck. 154339

I have been using the Ranch Hitch #3100 Straight Adapter for 3 years. Converting the 5th wheel to goose neck was awesome. Much easier to hook up and a smoother, quieter pull. After purchasing a new trailer I noticed that the trailer was too close to the cab of my short bed truck. I found the Ranch Hitch #3139 with 8" offset adapter. It installs easy and gives me 8 more inches away from my truck cab. Excellent! Turning corners is much more comfortable! 111386

How do I install this? Do I have to drill holes? How long does it take?

-- comment by: Randy - 05/30/2014

There is a threaded collar that goes around the king-pin. The Ranch hitch is threaded on to the collar and tightened to 400 ft. lbs. Then you will either drill 4 holes into the pin box and install bolts, or use four 1-inch tack welds to weld the Ranch Hitch to the the pin box. This is a relatively permanent install.

I still have to drill four holes and I had to rent a puller for $6.00 but so far I am impressed with how easy the installation was, but ask me again in two weeks when I have to move my fifth wheel, But for the price, and design compared to other adaptors, I have no complaints. Just not sure how well it will work with the offset. 91062

Works great, for what I need. I do prefer the fifth wheel hitch, but did not want to put the rails in my truck for that hitch. I do have to use the backup balls and my camera for the goose neck hitch but its not too bad.

After having this on my (small) 5th wheel travel trailer for more than 2 years, I have discovered the major problem with it... Because the hitch point is so much lower, it has created unusual leverage over the kingpin box and now my trailer frame is cracking :( Your trailer must be VERY shored up around the kingpin box to resist the extension of torque by essentially making your kingpin box much longer. I loved the idea of not having a 5th hitch in the box of my truck and the removable gooseneck ball instead, but I now know that a complete change-out of the kingpin box to a gooseneck hitch would have been more reliable. I am now in Mexico with a cracked trailer frame due to this :( 325391

The folks at etrailer arranged faster shipping that advertised at no charge and the adapter arrived lots quicker than expected. The product is obviously better than the former adapter. Lots heaver and the ball receiver is easier to center above the ball. Two EXCELLENT pieces of advice were included in the instructions. One was about bracing the hitch to prevent damage or coming loose from the trailer. The best advice regarded surging, or chucking. My previous adapter did both and neither a trailer manufacturer nor the RV people who sold and installed it could diagnose or fix the problem. This issue for me is important in that I have 3 fused vertebrae and stenosis. As usual, RanchHand is leading the pack! I have a RanchHand "cowcatcher" bumper and it has done the job really well also. Excellent product, Superb Advice! Many Thanks! Truman Powell Tyler, Texas 22844

This product is great and just what I was looking for at the time. It was fairly easy to attach to the king pin to convert it to a goose neck ball which is what I already had in my truck bed. It attaches rely solid and can easily meet the 24000 lb rating I am sure. Being a short bed truck this hitch had the 8" offset which has the same effect as a 5th wheel slider hitch. The only problem with the offset is it puts the angular body of the trailer hitch closer to the side walls of the bed. Also when I remove the offset portion it also helps deter theft as there is nothing to hitch to! I have since bought a long bed diesel truck so I will be buying the straight adapter soon. 371861

Purchased this gooseneck hitch to convert my fifth wheel travel trailer to a gooseneck. This product is easily attached to the fifth wheel king pin and attaches very solid. The hitch release cable makes it simple to secure and release from your ball. I am very satisfied with my choice in purchasing this product and would highly recommend it. I have purchased this and other products from etrailer and have always received the best service. 347375

Product shipped right away and arrived way sooner than I was anticipating. Installation was easy - however the only thing that needs to be accounted for is the length of the shaft. It made the trailer ride tipped back and had to do some modifications to make it work perfectly. Construction of the product was good and it did exactly what I needed to accomplish Would recommend . 358743

  • Is a 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Trailer Adapter with Offset Required for a Short Bed 2011 Ford F-250
  • To determine if an offset 5th wheel to gooseneck adapter is required for your 2011 Ford F-250 Super Duty with the 6-3/4 foot short bed, you will need to do a little measuring. Use the formula below to ensure there will be enough space between your truck cab and trailer when executing a 90-degree turn. (A + B) - C = Clearance A = Distance from center of gooseneck ball to truck cab B = Length of Offset, 8 inches for the longest we have available (Use Zero for no offset) C = Width...

  • Do 5th Wheel Trailers Require the Use of Safety Chains
  • No, 5th wheel trailer connections do not require safety chains. Consumer 5th wheel applications connect to the truck the same way that big rigs connect to trailers and this is considered a secure enough connection to not require safety chains. Items that connect to a ball do require safety chains. So if you are using the Ranch Hitch adapter # AM3139 as an example, you would need safety chains. You can then use the safety chain attachment, # AM3109. You can also check the laws in your...

Here is how to determine if an offset would be required. Then measure from the gooseneck hitch ball in the truck to the back of the truck cab. That dimension should be 4 inches more than your first measurement for correct clearance. For example, if your trailer measures 96 inches wide, take half (48 inches), then add 4 inches (52 inches). So if the measurement from the gooseneck hitch ball in the truck...

  • Installation Instructions for Anderson Fifth-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter # AM3100
  • The Anderson Fifth-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter, part # AM3100, installs in about an hour on standard fixed 5th wheel pin boxes to adapt them for towing with a gooseneck hitch. Anderson does not recommend it for use with a cushioned pin box. This adapter fits a standard 2-5/16-inch gooseneck ball and is rated for up to 24,000 lbs GVWR and up to 6,000 lbs tongue weight. It provide a vertical adjustment range of 3 inches (from 11-3/4-inches to 14-3/4 inches height) and is fitted...

  • How to Measure to Determine the Correct 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter
  • You will need to measure to determine how long the fifth-wheel to gooseneck adapter will need to be. Park your fifth-wheel trailer on a fairly level surface. Back your vehicle under the fifth-wheel trailer stopping when the center of the king pin is directly above the gooseneck hitch ball, measure from the top of the gooseneck ball on the truck to the base of the pin box on the trailer. This will give you the measurement needed to select an adapter. The adapters we offer range between...

  • How To Determine Which Fifth Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter To Use on a Ford F-250 Long Bed
  • Usually on a Ford F-250 long bed (8 foot) truck an offset gooseneck adapter is not necessary, but you can measure to see if you would need one. To determine the clearance needed on your F-250 long bed, you need to take the width of your trailer and divide by two. Then measure from the gooseneck hitch ball in the truck to the back of the truck cab. That dimension should be 4 inches more than your first measurement for correct clearance. For example, if your trailer measures 96 inches...

  • Gooseneck Adapter to Provide Additional Clearance Between 2006 Dodge Mega Cab and 5th Wheel Trailer
  • Where exactly is the 5th wheel contacting the bed? If its contacting the rear of the cab, then you will need to look into a sliding fifth wheel hitch or a fixed fifth wheel hitch with a sidewinder pin box as long as you have a short bed truck. The Ranch Hitch Offset Coupler Adapter, # AM3139, that you referenced will give you additional clearance when turning, but it is not designed to completely eliminate contact between your trailer and truck cab. If the trailer loft is hitting the...

You have two options for converting your B and W gooseneck hitch to tow a fifth-wheel trailer. The first option is to use a fifth wheel to gooseneck adapter like the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter w/8" Offset for Short-Bed Trucks, item # AM3139. The Ranch hitch is height adjustable and provides 8 extra inches of offset...

  • How Does Andersen # AM3139 Ranch Hitch Attach to Fifth Wheel King Pin
  • Take a look at the photos I've provided, which will give you a clearer idea of how the adapter would connect to the fifth wheel king pin. The threaded collar would slip over the king pin, and would be slid up all the way. The split collet is placed in the groove on the king pin, and the threaded collar would slip down over the collet. A gear puller or the # AM3103 slide hammer is used to seat the collar on the collet. The # AM3139 adapter would then thread onto the collar. The flange...

  • Why Cant Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel Adapter be Used with Ford Factory Prep Package
  • The Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter # CAB-C5GX1216 referenced in your question is not recommended for use with the factory-installed towing prep packages from Ford because of the plastic lever that is located on top of the hitch ball in your truck bed. This is the tab that is used to install and remove the hitch ball. The Convert-A-Ball Adapter has a nut inside the unit that will cause damage to the plastic tab over time, so they simply are not compatible. I instead...

For the greatest amount of offset, 8 inches, go with the Ranch Hitch, # AM3139. It is also rated the highest of any of the similar adapters; 24,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 6,000 pounds pin weight. You will also need the safety chains, # AM3109. It does use a threaded collar to install and remove the adapter to the king pin of the fifth wheel. If your F450 has the short bed, I would advise using the Ranch Hitch Universal Adapter, part # AM1319.
