Video Transcript for Review of Tekonsha Wiring - Trailer Connectors - 119147KIT

Today, we're gonna take a look at the upgraded Modulite vehicle wiring harness kit with the four way trailer connector and an installation kit. Now, this is a universal hard wire kit that will provide you with a four way connector to power your trailer's basic signal lights. This will power your trailer's stop, turn, tail, and running lights directly from the tow vehicle's battery using this power converter. This will virtually eliminate any draw on your vehicle's tail light circuit, and this will work with either LED or incandescent bulbs on both the trailer and the vehicle, and it is designed to work with most vehicles' multiplex wiring systems for lighting. The tail light circuit has been upgraded also to work with vehicles using PWM, which is pulse with modulation, allowing this converter to turn on fully, giving your trailer maximum light brightness. Now, this may be used on a two and a three wire system. But you do need to remember when you use it on a two wire system, this red break wire, that needs to connect to the ground.

If it's on a three wire system, it'll connect to the stop light. Now, this does eliminate the need for a heavy duty flasher. Included with this whole kit will be everything laid out here on the table. This upgraded Modulite wiring harness, which will connect to the vehicle's wiring harness. The Modulite install kit here for connecting to the vehicle's battery, which includes 20 feet of 12 gauge wire. This in line fuse holder with a 10 amp fuse.

Two butt connectors, one ring terminal, some cable ties to take up any slack in wiring, and this ground screw for grounding your white wire.Comes also with this neat circuits tester, which will help you find wires behind your vehicle's tail lights for connecting your Modulite to that. Also, these five quick splice wiring connectors will make tapping into those wires very quick and easy. Now the four way, if you notice, does have this integrated four way cover here that'll protect your floor pull connector from the elements, and it reduces dirt and debris or corrosion for a nice, trouble free use. All you have to do is just push it on like that, and it'll protect those terminals. Does with a nice set of detailed instructions that will describe how to hook up everything. Now, the maximum stop and turn light amps on this is one per side, is 2.1 amps.

Maximum tail lights is 7.5 amps. And then just briefly, I just want to go through a little bit how this would connect. You would just go to the rear of your vehicle and these pigtail wires are what's gonna tap into your vehicle's wiring harness, and you'll use the circuit tester to test them function for function. But basically what will happen is the brown wire is usually for your tail lights, the red wire we mentioned is usually for your stop light, unless it's a two wire, then you ground it. The yellow wire would be for your left turn signal, and this green wire, it's a length of wire, will go over to your passenger side and be for your passenger's turn signal. Here's your four way that will run out the back and plug onto your trailer.

These two wires, the white wire you can see has an eyelid on it. That's for connecting to a good, clean ground. If there's not one nearby, they do include this grounding screw that you can make your own ground. And then this remaining power wire, which is the black wire. This will run to your vehicle's battery, and to help you do that is this install kit right here. So what you'll do is take one of these butt connectors, connect it to that power wire, connect it to one end of this length of wire, and then run this all the way up to the front of the vehicle. And you're gonna connect this to the battery, but you want to run it through an in line fuse holder. You don't want to connect it directly to the battery. So you'll take your other butt connector, connect it to one end of this power wire, the other end to one side of the fuse holder, just like that.Your other side of your fuse holder will connect to your ring terminal, and then that will connect to your battery. And you just pop that open, take the included 10 amp fuse, install it in there, cover it back up, and your system will be all ready to go. Like I said, they do give you these extra cable ties if you have any of this wire that might be hanging down, it'll help you pull that up out of the way. But that should do it for the review on the upgraded Modulite vehicle wiring harness kit with the four way trailer connector and instillation kit.

When we buy a new vehicle, we always purchase the trailer hitch and wiring harness from etrailer. Your website is extremely easy to navigate and make a purchase. Only one complaint. Two years ago I purchased a hitch and harness for my new Hyundai Tucson. The module on the harness stopped working this past spring. I had no trailer lights which made it inconvenient for when we wanted to use it. I was not happy that I had to purchase another harness and pay my mechanic to install it. I hope that the harness that I just purchased lasts a lot longer. 725174

2010 BMW 135i

I just installed by my own on BMW 135i 2010 despite the fact few dealers and u-haul refused to help me. It is a way easier installation(45mins) as compared to other car brands, because the battery is at the back of the car. The only thing you would need from the kit is one more butt connector. I had a problem to find a place for ground - but it is solvable. I used crocodile connector and tape to connect to one of the screws of the back light. One more easy thing for dummies. To test the right wire you will need to connect one end of the tester to the ground of the car, switch on the light to test and connect the tester(which is also in the kit). For tail light you will need to switch on the car engine. If you do not want to test these here are the colors you use in your car Left side of the car in multibulb assembly wires: MODULITE ----------------------------------------------135i LEFT TURN -------------------------------------- Blue wire with green stripe BRAKES ----------------------------------------- Purple with Yellow stripe Left side of the car on Tail light bulb harness: TAIL LIGHTS ------------------------------------ Purple wire with Light Blue stripe Right side of the car in multibulb assembly: RIGHT TURN ------------------------------------- Blue wire with Brown stripe ^^^I took this description from open source of one of the BMW forums. For me it worked out well. As for the Modulite colors they are in the pdf Instructions of this Modulite. I do not know why I did not get this in a printout with modulite, but I got this info here http://www.etrailer.com/instructions.aspx?pn=119147KIT 148050

Too complicated and instructions not clear. I recommend a factory harness instead of the application. 541337

Comments
Because this wiring harness isnt a vehicle-specific item, the install instructions are indeed vague, as this product fits numerous vehicles. The basic procedure would involve using the included circuit tester to verify which wires in the vehicles tail light wiring harness control which lighting function. Once each function right turn, left turn, brake, and running lamps is identified, the corresponding wires on the trailer harness are spliced in. Yellow wire taps into the left turn circuit, green into the right turn, red into the brake lamp and brown into the running lamp circuit. The instructions cannot be any more specific as different vehicles use different wire colors to carry the different functions. Ive linked to an install video showing a similar harness being installed on a 2012 MB GLK Class. The wire colors on this vehicle might be different than whats found on yours, but the procedure for identifying which circuit carries which function would be the same.

Very very confusing and incomplete directions, NO way to understand the difference between the red "2 wire or 3 wire setup" Very very annoying, parts missing in, i.e. 12 gage wire, fuze for battery connection. I would NOT recommend anyone with a BMW 135i buy this product, I am very dissatisfied with this confusing and incomplete kit 85543

Hardwire kits like this take a little bit of extra work and require a basic understanding of some electrical basics. If anyone ever has questions, give us a call at 1-800-298-8924 and our techs can help out quite a bit with the project and get you up to speed on the background info you will need to complete the task. Installation instructions were well written. I missed on the T-One plug and play release for the Jeep Wrangler JLU by a week and recommend that over the universal kit due to the T-One being plug and play for the tail light connectors. Either way, great products. Thanks!! 502378

2013 Toyota Prius

I recommend the Tow-Ready 119147KIT instead of the Curt Model for a 2013 Prius. I had to return the Curt Kit because the running lights/tail light stayed on all the time even with the vehicle off. Sometimes there wasn’t a tail/running light on if you reset the converter by removing and re-installing the fuse. This Tow-Ready model works like it should. You'll need 12 gauge wire to run from the battery, (right side hatch area,) to this unit which will need to be mounted on the driver’s side, rear hatch. At the very top of the left rear tail light are covered wires going into a plug. The Blue is the Stop light and the Brown is the tail/running light. (Be careful since these wires are thin solid copper wires.) Left turn signal is the green/yellow stripe wire and on the right side rear lamp the right turn signal is also the green/yellow stripe wire. You will need to remove the left rear panel to get to the blue and brown wires. Remove the bottom tray cover, the bottom tray as well as the left rear plastic tray and the plastic bottom hatch trim over the latch assembly. Remove the Phillips screw on the left rear panel as well as the chrome tie down clamp. This sounds harder than it really is. Good luck! 134002

It feels heavy duty and is working exactly as it should. Easy wiring in my 2005 Passat TDI. The most difficult part was bring the 12ga wire from the battery to the rear of the vehicle. The effort was worth it; I have a professional looking install that works perfectly. 78902

I am pretty happy with my purchase. The tow hitch arrived very promptly within a few days of ordering it. The longest part of the install was marking and cutting the plastic bumper. Once that was done it took two of us 15 minutes to bolt it in place. I did find the recommended ball mount a little low for my trailer and you might like to try one that has a 3" rise. The instructions were a bit sparse but there are several video clips on how to approach it. I used the 119147KIT for the lights and I found a guide on the Chevy Bolt forum. I do need to say that this isn't for the faint hearted! 654133

Everything needed for a clean install is provided. The only problem I had was the quick splice wire connectors. I spliced the wires manually and everything worked fine. 135872

Hitch was a breeze using a lift. Wiring package typically comes as a plug-in. This package you need to solder wires and use wrap. Not an issue but for the price, should be a plug and play. Still give trailer hitch and wiring harness 5. Less than two (2) hours to install on '04 Porsche Cayenne S. 683062

Quick delivery. Reviews had been read prior to order and consistent with reviews, lack of provided instructions . Weather currently prevents installation so critique can only extend to positive assessment of components received. Color coding obvious and similar to previous hookups I have done. Reviews said etrailer tech helped which I may require for one variation from previous trailer wiring experiences as I add this to my Volvo C30. 590388

  • Recommended Items To Convert Separate Wiring On International 4400 Truck For Towing
There is a couple things you will need to get for your 4400 International Truck. since 99 percent of the trailers in the US are combined systems changing the wiring on the truck is really the best option. First you will need an Upgraded Modulite Vehicle Wiring Harness Kit, part # 119147KIT. This will convert the separated signals on your truck and feed them to the 4-way connector included with the kit. You then need to install a Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller,...

  • Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness for 2014 Ford Explorer Without Tow Package
Your Explorer might have the rectangular plug located to the right of the muffler on the passenger side of the vehicle (see linked video). If it does, you could use the # 118540 harness from Tow Ready. The harness is a plug and play install, pretty easy. If you do NOT have the connector, you'll need to hardwire the trailer connector in place using the # 119147KIT wiring harness. I've linked you to a video showing that harness being installed on a different vehicle. The procedure would...

If it were in your situation and had just bought a brand new vehicle...I would return the universal kit and go with the custom fit # 118786 for your 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL. Your Jeep is brand new and I'd rather install something that doesn't require "cutting" into factory taillight wiring. But if you are in a hurry and need trailer wiring ASAP the # 119147KIT will work just as well once installed. It will just be a much more involved install process.

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2013 Lexus RX 350 Without Factory Tow Package
If your 2013 Lexus RX 350 did not come with the factory tow package I recommend using the ZCI harness # 119250KIT. With this harness you will not have to splice into the vehicle wiring. It has connectors that clamp around the tail light wiring and sense the current flowing through the wiring. It's kind of awesome! Since you want to do some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch...

  • Which Tekonsha Trailer Wiring Kit Fits 2002 2002 Mercedes E320
The taillight configuration of your 2002 Mercedes E320 has separate wiring. The brake and turn signals are sent along separate wires. You don't have BT or BTT designations which refer to multiplex style wiring so the # 119147KIT would work well.

  • Recommended 4-Pole Trailer Wiring Kit for 2003 Volkswagon Passat
The three brands of 4-pole trailer wiring harness we offer for your 2003 Volkswagen Passat install in the same manner so there is no one kit that is any easier to wire than another. However, we have found that the Tekonsha brand wiring products tend to me more reliable than some others so we typically recommend this brand. For your 2003 Passat you will use kit # 119147KIT. I linked the written instructions, an article and some videos to help.
