An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

The installation went well. My Ubolts were fairly new on my truck so the nuts loosened without any problems. I would recommend spraying the ubolt nuts with penetrant prior to installing this product on rusty or slightly rusty vehicles to avoid breaking the ubolt. I am sure this product will be helpful on my 1/2 ton pickup. I installed a pair on my previous 2500hd sierra and were in great condition after 8 years of towing and hauling wood, trailers, campers, etc. This is a great product to use bs. Adding a helper spring. Much softer ride until the truck is loaded. No rear rake is added either.

The timbren system is the way to go. The increased stability while towing is great. One of the greatest benefits of this system is that you enjoy a totally factory ride while unloaded and get instant stability when you hook up a trailer or load your pickup bed. Even when loaded or towing the ride is much better than my past vehicles that I added a leaf spring to. The add a leafs caused a harsher ride at all times where the timbren suspension does not. I highly suggest them.

Modem skill required for installation , fit was perfect ,great help on maintaining vehicle handling with my car trailer on while traveling highway . I would recommend these to any hauling a trailer or frequent truck loads . only

My thoughts remain the same on this product. Great help while towing loaded car trailer ,

They definitely support and did lift my 2014 toyota tundra up about 1.5 inches.
This application with my weight has trunk riding on the cushions all the time.
That has teavel and bounce issues that do make some driving situations interesting.
I may go ahead and replace with airbags but for now support things well!

The Timbren system has helped greatly while pulling my 5600 LB RV. It aids with the sag and my truck does not look like a "low-rider" while hauling the RV. It also appears to help with stability. I also haul a pontoon boat with my truck. At times with the lighter load it appears to be a little stiff; however I can live with that alright. I don't have to worry about airing it up as like other systems due to the spacing between the suspension and the frame. I would recommend this product to those who haul boats, RV's, or commercial loads. Very happy that I decided to purchase and install this product. Lastly, I did not install the system myself, but observed my mechanic friend as he helped out. It appeared that it is relatively simple to install.

2018 ToyotaTundra

Bought these for my new 2018 Toyota Tundra. On my previous 2010 Tundra, I had installed helper springs and decided to try Timbren's this time around. I bought 1/2" spacers, since I did not want the truck to sag too much. Not sure if you can see in the pictures, but with the 1/2" spacers, the Timbren's come into contact approximately 1/2" to 3/4". They can be a bit rough and bouncy once they come into contact, but no rougher or uncomfortable than with helper springs. Over all I am very happy with how they perform. The installation was very easy. Took me about 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour. All you need is a 24" breaker bar, a ratchet wrench, and a 19mm deep socket. Unloosen the nuts enough to remove the existing bump stop and replace with the Timbren's. That's all it takes!

by:

These bump stops are great and very easy to install. They help keep my 2019 Tacoma leveled when towing my 5,000lbs trailer. I’m very happy and recommend them if you are planning to tow a trailer with your Tacoma. My only complaint is that sometimes when driving on old or uneven roads, they will make the ride very bumpy as if you had a sports suspension.

by:
Nissan Titan

I just wanted you to know that prior to my installation, this Coachman with a hitch weight of 700+ pounds would push the rear down so much that there was barely daylight between the tire and the wheel well...but look at us now. This '04 Titan with 189,000 miles and original suspension is riding high. Your product helped me get the bed level and has reduced the sway on the trailer so much that it is hardly noticeable. I am very happy with my purchase, your follow-up and the results.

by:
Toyota Tacoma

I've had these on my '16 Tacoma for a year now. When the truck bed is empty, the ride is harsher than before, but not intolerable. When I'm loaded up for hunting (lots of heavy gear, maybe an elk, plus towing a pop-up camper), it's perfect--never bottoms out like it used to. I keep 120 lbs. of sand back there all winter for added traction in the snow, and that helps to smooth out the ride a bit. This photo with sagging rear was BEFORE the Timbrens--now it rides level.

by:

This is an amazing product. Took about 30 minutes total to install on my Toyota Tundra. That includes setting up and clean up. I pull a 20 foot flat bed trailer and a 30 foot travel trailer. This product really helps me when I do encounter bumps and uneven lanes. Helps keep my rig secure on the road and doesn’t interfere with normal everyday ride. I would definitely buy this product again and I most certainly would purchase from etrailer again. Great company, support and prices!

by:

20 min install tops. Took more time retorquing the nuts after loading. Couple tips: only remove the two rear nuts on each u bolt to slip out the old bump stop to replace with the timbren. Go ahead and spray those nuts with pb blaster or wd 40 to help ease removal. I used a breaker bar so it was no problem. I would suggest that once you have the timbrens in place, I would jack up the rear under the receiver hitch (I used wood blocks) and slip your socket and extension back into the bump stop to retorque the 17mm bolt. I also went ahead and retorqed the nuts once I hooked up trailer. As far as towing now, wow what a difference. Virtually eliminated all front axle hop from road dips making for a much more confident and stable ride. 26' coach, 4900# dry. Pics are unloaded and then loaded.

ToyotaTundra

Just finished installing the TTORTUN4 Suspension kit on my Tundra. It took me, with limited mechanical ability, about an hour to install and was a simple and easy installation. My truck loaded with tools, a construction canopy, and heavy bed-slide sits up in the back like its unloaded, rides great, and handles so much better! I'm super pleased! Thanks so much!

by:

These are great! Dont change the ride at all when not in use and make towing my 7000lbs trailer so much more comfortable! Tow with confidence. Easy install took ten minutes with my buddy's lift. Could have been done easily on the ground too. Improves handling and ride when towing

by:
2017 ToyotaTundra

UPS lost the box, but one e-mail to etrailer and another was on its way. Installed easily and is performing just as I'd hoped. Truck is more level and the ride is a little stiffer so towing is much better.

A great upgrade. I would recommend if anyone is towing regularly or heavy.

ToyotaTundra

I love my Timbrens! After a year of driving my Toyota Tundra 8 footbed with Timbrens under the rear, I can attest to the support they give. The rear no longer sags under heavy loads and my truck handles excellent with firewood and tools driving over the rough roads of the Adirondacks. When I turn, the truck doesn’t sway. They give me peace of mind when I’m driving which to me is invaluable. Timbrens were recommended to me over airbags for the harsh cold climate we have up north here and I love their simple design, quick installation, and no maintenance. I will be installing another pair in the front to haul a truck camper. I recommend them to anyone who regularly hauls a lot of weight.

2008 ToyotaTundra

Purchased for a 2008 5.7 l Toyota Tundra. As advertised. Installed in one hour. Performed as described with an unload bed- slightly stiffer with less recoil over rough roads. Hitched the fifth wheel to the Tundra and took a one hour trip over varying road conditions. Performed exactly as I hoped. Couldn't be happier. ETrailer processed the order on the same day and I received it on the afternoon of the third day. Could not be more pleased.

Thomas T.

Thank you for your follow up inquire on the Timbren suspension parts for my 2008 Tundra. I used the vehicle for the past year to tow a Heartland fifth wheel. The parts worked as advertised and I have been happy up til I sold the Tundra. The service I received at Etrailer led me to purchase towing base plate and bar for my dinghy on our next RV. Its a pleasure dealing with Etrailer!

by:

These worked awesome. I tow a 4k lb. camping trailer about 4 times a year from Arizona to the California coast. They minimized the sag and made the truck control the trailer much better. Initially I was afraid they would make the ride too stiff, but they actually made bump compliance much better. They were easy to install and probably a better value over airbags if you don't tow a lot. I'm happy.

John C.

Still love em. Ive recommended them to a few friends.

by:
ToyotaTundra

My last Tundra had Firestone air bags with separate air lines (also purchased from Etrailer). They worked great but I always had to adjust pressure for loaded vs unloaded and assure the pressures were even.

These are so much better. Stock smooth ride unloaded and I don't have to do a thing when I load the bed or add a trailer behind it. I towed a 24 foot 14K pound equipment trailer with two side by sides and two atv's on it from NE GA to northern TN and had no worries what so ever.
I would highly recommend them!

Installed a SES part #TTORTUN4 on a stock 2019 Tacoma, 4x4 offroad, 4-door, long-bed. The SES have been through one northern Illinois winter and driven 15,000 miles over 9 months.

The SES is a five-star product. The ride comfort of the suspension is almost unchanged with an unloaded truck. The truck ride is a little stiffer and can be noticed on bumpier roads. The ride change would be comparable to adding 5-7 psig in the tires. The suspension performance is immediately improved. The truck does not roll on exit ramps and has less forward nose dive rocking motion when stopping.

The SES suspension towing performance is significantly improved over stock. With 300 lbs of sand bags in the truck bed and a 4x10 utility trailer loaded with an ATV. The truck and trailer is much more stable in the wind and does not roll in the curves. The truck remains level and does not let the trailer nose dive when braking. The trailer has does not fishtail in the wind or during lane changes.

The SES suspension has only been offroad a few times. The truck does ride slightly rougher in the bumpy trails or potholes. This truck does not have a lot of offroad time to really assess the offroad performance.

The installation was less than 1 hour. It is recommended to apply a little penetration oil on the suspension U-bolts and clean the threads up with a wire brush. Especially if you live in Illinois where salt is applied to the winter roads. A good impact drill, 11/16” deep socket and a breaker bar. Also check out the E-Trailer installation videos.

Here is some measurements before and after the installation. With the SES installed on the truck bed as measured from the wheel well to the ground was ¼” higher than stock. This does not sound like a lot but aesthetically it made the truck look level. With the truck loaded with 300lbs of sand, utility trailer and ATV the stock truck sagged 1-1/4” verses the SES only 3/8”. The SES improves both the ride height, performance and aesthetics of the truck when loaded.

The Tacoma and SES has traveled unloaded, with a full bed, towed utility trailer, tandem axel U-Haul trailers and a 20’ Jon boat. For the type of driving I do this SES suspension is an awesome upgrade and well worth the money and time to install. Five stars all the way.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System For Trailer Towed With 2015 Toyota Tacoma
The first thing you want to check out is the weight capacity of your trailer hitch with a weight distribution system. The capacity of a hitch can change when you use a WD system. You will want to know the gross tongue weight to find the right system. The weight you need to know is the tongue weight of your trailer when it is fully loaded and ready to tow added to the weight of any cargo you place in the truck bed behind the rear axle. This can include water, coolers, or any other gear....

  • Towing Fifth Wheel Trailer With 2006 Nissan Titan
From what you describe, your trailer isn't very heavy. Pin weight can range from 15-20 percent of the trailer weight, or up to 25 percent for some larger toy haulers. Worst case scenario, you're looking at about 1500 lbs or so of pin weight which is pretty minimal. To determine the towing capacity of your truck, take a look at the sticker on the driver's door jamb. Look for the GCWR, the gross combined weight rating. This represents the maximum amount the trailer and truck can weigh....

We don't have any kits that would provide more support but if we did it would probably cause your ride quality to be harsher than you'd like. The 6,000 lbs weight capacity listed for the Timbren Active Off-Road Bumpstops # TABSTORSEQ is the vertical load limit of the bumpstops. When towing a trailer, the trailer weight is distributed between the trailer axle and the tow vehicle.
