Reduced rear axle sag with Timbren suspension enhancement

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above your rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the leaf spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Action of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's-side or passenger's-side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

Trailer swaying as it is towed behind a truck

Because your vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren SES

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

2009 Nissan Xterra

Installed kit on 2009 Nissan Xterra on place of factory rear bump stops. It greatly reduced the hard bottoming out when carrying passengers or a load in the back. This is an easy fix to an annoying problem.

I did find it easier to remove the rear wheel for installation. This gives direct access to the bump stops.

2009 Nissan Xterra

Quick delivery from Etrailer.. Thank you! I put these on my 2009 Xterra Offroad. Install was easy. I jacked up one side at a time, removed the wheel and had great access to do the swap. My leaf springs are original and likely sagging a bit.

Without load, there is a .75" space between these bumpers and the u-bolts/axle (Note: Contact points on the axle are not ideal. These do not have clean contact with the axle as the OEM bumpers did. Instead they contact the u-bolts first then squeeze down towards the axle). Which generally offers an unchanged ride for day to day driving (except for when you hit big bumps/dips. Then you can feel the stiff bumpers).

With load (trailer, tongue: 200 lbs) these bumpers sit on the u-bolts. Ride is definitely stiffer/less hitch float. However, larger bumps are a bit jarring as you are sitting on the bumpers. Also, if you get into rough stuff, these limit your axle articulation some. I think adjustable air bags may have been a better solution, even though a bit pricier.

Thanks etrailer!

2011 Nissan Xterra

I bought these for my Xterra to help eliminate sag when towing. I don't tow a lot and I liked the idea that these units wouldn't affect the ride the rest of the time.

First impressions of the quality. The thickness of the steel brackets is great almost look heavier than they need to be. The rubber springs are very solid and seem like they will last a long time. The included hardware seemed to be of good quality as well. My only complaint was the finish on the brackets. At this price point I was hoping they would be powder coated but they are painted. Not a huge deal but right out of the box some of the paint was flaking off like the parts weren't prepped properly. I ended up scuffing them down and spraying two coats of bedliner on them. I am hoping that will help keep them rust free.

Installation was very easy and I had no problems getting them pretty centered over the axle. I did have the opportunity to tow since the install and they really did make a huge difference. I gained about 2 inches of height when fully loaded. The ride of the vehicle was very good and the handling was very stable. I drive this vehicle every day and when not towing it is a little stiffer at times, but certainly not enough to be a problem. I am at 60k now and plan on replacing my shocks shortly so I am hoping that will help.

Overall, it was a worthwhile upgrade and I would do them again in a minute.

Comments
These are still holding up great a year later. I’ve pulled a loaded trailer twice in the last month and it keeps the Xterra perfectly level. I have not noticed any harshness in the ride with a loaded trailer, but when not towing it can get a little bumpy on rough roads. Not enough to cause any controversy problems and I still think these are an easy solution.

2011 Nissan Xterra

Both the Timbren product and the etrailer service are excellent. I have a 2011 Nissan Xterra and purchased the TJRC01 system to stop the bottoming out I was experiencing over bumps and dips in the road. The Timbren system was super easy to install. I just jacked-up the car one side at a time and removed the wheels first to gain access to the bump stops. The whole process took less than an hour. My car is only 5 years old, so the old bolts were not rusted on and came off easily (I did use a little PB Blaster, so that may have helped). The ride now over the same old bumps is sooooo much better. Thank you -

2007 Nissan Xterra

I put the Trimbrens on my wife's 2007 Xterra in the hope that it would take the shock out of the rear end bottoming out especially on speed bumps and road bumps with any kind of weight in the back. The Timbrens work as advertised and eliminated the harsh contact between the frame and the axle. Installation took about 20 minutes total with air tools.

by:
Nissan Xterra

Installed on an Xterra S. Took less than 30 minutes, very easy. On the Xterra, it is constant contact with the axle. The ride is more firm but not uncomfortable. I'm using it to pull my Casita camper (tongue weight about 350 lbs). This Timbren package levels the vehicle for a very stable ride and elimanes the need for an unusually high rise hitch. Recommended.

by:
2005 Nissan Xterra

I call it a “poor man’s suspension upgrade”. The installation was straightforward and it took a few months to break-in, but I’d definitely recommend the product and prefer it over the stock bump stops.

2012 Nissan Xterra

The Timbren kit I bout for my 2012 Xterra was as easy to install as the pictures and directions showed. It worked perfect and leveled everything out for towing our travel trailer on a 2500 mile road trip. Great product and at a better price point than the other options.

by:
Nissan Xterra

Needs a little more slot in base plate. I could not line up to center of axle. With that said it works great and has taken out those harsh bumps.

Awesome Product , if you have a lifted Xterra add the extra washer
etrailer rocks thanks for the fast shipping

I have used these on both of our vehicles, and they do a great job of improving handling and load hauling ability.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

The timbrens actually did what they were suppose to do. However, once I starter driving out west I notice the timbrens were riding on the axle which cause the speedometer to jump around depending on the road. I would recommend them if you are hauling or towing a camper or RV. I was going to contact etrailer about maybe removing a spacer for one set however the other set came as one unit. The bottom line is the Timbrens does stabilize your load for safe travels. I will be contacting etrailer soon to assist in correcting the problem...Road trip from Idaho,Colorado,Wyoming, and Utah were beautiful... Thank you etrailer

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Installed these with only one issue, which was on the driver side rear axle. The axle had a ABS sensor cable bracket on the axle that need to be readjusted and trimmed down. The BumpStock was hitting this bracket on one edge. So actually, it's not and exact fit. But this issue is really a FORD placement issue of that cable. So just be aware that some extra work may be needed to install them. Passenger rear side install perfectly. Next is the drive to see how much better the coach drives, heard great reviews on that

Worked great on our 2019 Honda Odyssey Elite to the East coast.Fully loaded with 4 people and a car top carrier, the Timbrens kept the van stable and level.
Sold the 2019 but took the Timbren system out and put them in our new 2022 Elite. Very easy to install, highly recommend.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I used this on my Isuzu tow truck. The blocks in and of themselves are fine, they support the weight. Here's the problem: They are pre-loaded, meaning that they always touch between the frame and the rear axle. As you load the vehicle this puts more pressure on the frame in this 5" area where the blocks are. The springs have not yet taken as much weight as they normally would. Now, all this upward pinpoint pressure bends the frame. This is what happened to me on my rollback tow truck. After many hours and now double plating the frame all is well again, but a tremendous amount of work. Yes, the blocks are fine, but the result of installing this product resulted in a bent frame. The vehicle was not overloaded and was within the GVWR.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I really like these Timbren bump stops. I think the best thing about them is the simplicity, both how they work and how easy the install was. I bought these when I added a dump insert (similar to a salt spreader) into my 2019 F-250. I have loaded this truck heavy before with dirt and the truck sagged tremendously and had a lot of body roll. To prevent this with the now added dump insert, I installed these. Super easy to install! Took maybe 30 min. It reduces body roll and seems to improve the ride depending on how loaded the truck is.

One unfortunate consequence to the install is that the Timbrens brought to light that I have a weak leaf spring on my passenger side, which was suspect previously.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase and would buy again!

I think I will be very happy with the ride when I tow our fifth wheel, it definitely needed the extra support especially on rough roads.I chose not to use the spacers because I like the softer ride when the truck is unloaded.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Delivered a day early, easy installation, just what I was after for my 2010 2500,with a leveling kit 63 gal auxiliary tank, generator, tools, and the like in the bed, probably 1000 pounds or so,300 or so behind the center of the rear axel, not so much by choice just the way it had to be ,these got rid of that annoying little squat, much more satisfied with the stance with the tongue weight on it,easy order easy delivery , you can see the before and after, awesome product!!

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Ok, the drivers side was very easy to install. Maybe 15 minutes. The passengers side was another story, the rear bolt was very difficult to get at and took a great deal of time and creativity to get the bolt tight do to no room to turn the wench.
That being said it did improved the ride a great deal with no load, I drive country roads that are very rough , it completely stoped the wheel hop and provide a much better ride.
I would recommend installing these I’m glad I did! I would give this 5 stars if it were not for the passenger installation.

  • Will Timbren Springs Eliminate Sag on 2011 Nissan Xterra Towing a Horse Trailer
Sag caused by the tongue weight of a trailer is best resolved using weight distribution, not suspension enhancement, but if you do not want weight distribution then using Timbren springs would help. The Timbren springs # TJRC01 are rated for up to 3,000 pounds so they can easily handle the tongue weight of your horse trailer loaded or empty.
