Firestone Coil-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Coil-Rite springs fit inside your existing rear coil springs to maximize the effectiveness of your suspension system. The added cushion provided by the air springs allows your vehicle to better handle a heavy load or trailer. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle for more effective braking and handling under heavy loading or when you encounter adverse road conditions. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

Firestone Coil-Rite airline installation

The air pressure in your Coil-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Air Spring Construction

Firestone Coil-Rite air spring components

Coil-Rite springs are constructed of durable, elastic polyurethane to ensure years of service. Single replacement springs (sold separately) are available for maintenance to an existing Coil-Rite kit.

Air Spring Installation

The Coil-Rite springs install inside your existing coil springs. The custom-fit springs attach to your vehicle's spring seats.

Jeep

Great product and works perfect on my Jeep Gladiator. The instaletion video was nice to watch although is very much the harder way to install the air bags. Much easier to remove the outer sway bar bolts and the shoch bolts, raise the frame and drop the bag down through the top of the removed spring. Just be sure to align the factory top spring pad correctly when raising the axle back in place. This also made it a lot easier to install the air line. It took me about one hour this way for the complete job and never folded the bag to force it through the spring.

Great quality product. These will help sag when towing a trailer. They will also increase the ride harshness slightly.

Super easy one person install on 2020 Jeep Gladiator. tip: drop the shocks at the lower mounting point and drop the sway bar links where they attach to the frame, springs slide right out making this MUCH easier. Great service and fast shipping keep us coming back to etrailer again and again, All it takes is 30-40 lbs of air via a single valve stem thanks to purchasing the T fitting. We are ready to crawl! Trailer pictured is 4000lbs + loaded. Sitting very well thanks to this Firestone bag kit! Thanks again etrailer!

Great quality product, although for install I had to pull the springs on my diesel gladiator to get the airbags installed.

While these were more difficult to install than they looked, They did the job. I'll be towing with them in just a few days!

The kit was exactly as described. But the bags were very hard to slide in it was way easier to remove than sping and slide the bag in from the top

Review from a similar Coil-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Installed on my 2020 Ram 1500 4x4 ecodiesel. Took about 1 hour. Jacked up rear of vehicle to let coil spread out a little. Bags went in easy. Air lines were simple to run. Bought the union T-valve so I could air the bags up at same time and to make sure equal PSI goes to each bag.

Comments
They still working great. Only minor issue is the line that threads onto bags do come lose and cause air leakage. Recommend locktite to solve the issue.

They functioned exactly as advertised. Very strong and durable. So strong are they that they didn’t even burst or puncture in a roll over crash. One of the spring that contained a spring assist bag was knocked out of the truck and it still did not rupture. In the pictures below you can see the spring in the bed of the truck. Highly recommend this product.

No issue at all with these. Keep them with at least 10-15psi at all times and lift it up to 30psi only when fully loaded or hauling. Initially, the blue fill tube seemed too long but worked out great to get it laced underneath the exhaust heat shield. Some have put the fill valves on the inside. However, I found it easier to use a standard bike pump on the exterior. And made it symetrical :) I would had have recommended it to several others who have simular needs.

Review from a similar Coil-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Installed on my '08 Acura MDX, very tight fit, it would work perfectly if air didn't leak out of the connection at the bottom of the bag. It was a very lengthy install process for me, about 6hrs due to a stuck rear strut bolt that required drilling out. Also, needed an additional person to re-install the coil while holding down the lower control arm and squeezing the coil back into position. The air leak is easily identified where the air line connects into the bottom of the airbag. I've re-cut the airline multiple times to ensure a perfectly flat end of the tube, and re-connected it. Even had a mechanic check the system, but there's still a slow leak at the connection into the bag. These airbags seem very sturdy, but this is starting to make me second guess the quality, it seems like that connection is a clear weak point/design flaw.

Review from a similar Coil-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

They work great. First I added a levelling kit then the Firestone ride rite for when I tow my boat. Really notice the difference when towing. With fully loaded tongue weight, rear suspension dropped .75 inches, added 10psi to the bags and brought it back up .5 inches.

Comments
Its been great one of the best additions to use when towing. I recommend it for anyone that tows or adds excessive weight in the rear.

Review from a similar Coil-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

This is the worst product I have ever experienced.. both in terms of installation and use. I was very excited upon receiving the product and couldn't wait to install as my SantaFe was suffering from the rear end squat upon loading up for a trip. Before installing I gave the product a test fit to see how it would perform and here I found the first problems. The air hose wire as well as the bags were super stiff... which I later learned was going to have a major effect on the installed product. I hooked up the L-shaped connectors to the bag and upon trying to test the system for leaks I found that I wasn't able to put any any air inside. After further investigation it appeared as though the L-shaped connector wasn't reaching the air valve to depress it to allow air to enter or exit upon tightening the connectors on the valve stem of the air bags. OK not a super big deal.. I got rid of the valves in the airbag as the only valves that really mattered were the valves on the end of the line where I would fil up the system air near the bumper. Upon installing the system onto my car which was a process that took many hours, I quickly realized that the system wont last for too long. The who system is not stable inside the shock.. the pillow moves around as the shock experiences vibration as it travels down the road. Also the L-shaped connectors barely clear the black puck like discs and its very hard to tighten them down on to the air bag. Also on installation there isn't enough room in the cavity for the wire to come out properly to the hole that was drilled causing it to either wrap in a spiral or it creates a kink in the line causing the line to crack over time as the L-shape connector creates a 90 degree angle... I have now idea who designed it this way..why not use a straight up connector and softer air lines. After the install the lines lasted maybe 2 weeks before the system went total flat. Upon looking at it both sides had their lines crushed and cut allowing air to escape. One side had an air leak right by the L-shaped connector (in the hose) and the other side developed a leak in the hose near where the drilled hole was the hole was too small to give the super stiff hose enough clearance to freely move as the air bag was moving up and down with the suspension spring as the car was being used. The holes were drilled to spec. I tried fixing the system 2 times following the initial install but similar problems continued. I enlarged the holes and changed the lines to clear flexible tubbing, and tossing out the L-shaped connector. I had minor success but the tubing eventually comes loose or gets worn out. The biggest problem is that the black puck should be attached to the bottom of the suspension cavity and the air bag to it... but without being able to find the proper inline screw on cap connector I resulted to attaching the clear tubing to the treads of the air pillow with crazy glue and Teflon tape. Part of the problem is that the whole assembly air bag and black puck just kind of float in the inside the spring of the suspension and are in constant movement up and down as the bag itself once inflated travels up and down as the spring gets compressed. It appears the air hose also serves to keep the who system in line which it does not. Eventually small leaks develop and the system gets flat. I have wasted too much time on this but I will try to fix it again this summer for the last time. Hope this helps someone out.. I have had terrible experience with this. cheers

Comments
The installation of this kit is a more involved installation. I would not recommend removing the valves in the air bags though I understand that it worked in the short term. I recommend watching the video installation that we completed on a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe.

Review from a similar Coil-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

The Air Helpers are a real bear to install, took me 5 hours and lots of ingenuity but it's done now.. They are a very dense, thick, flexible material that are extremely stiff and don't go easily (a huge understatement) between the coils to lodge inside the springs. They are quite low volume so be careful to inflate small amounts at at time until you reach the desired pressure. Haven't had them under a load yet, but if you manage to get them in place I expect they will provide stiffening as advertised.

Not really helping, and theres a slow leak in one of the systems.

Review from a similar Coil-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Installed on a 2016 4Runner in conjunction with a 1-1/2" Daystar coil spring spacer. Since the coil spacer is hollow, I left one segment of the factory bump stop in place to compensate for and match the height of the spacer. I also added a Firestone T-fitting on the airline for a single inflation point and located the inflation valve next to my trailer plug wiring. Quite a pain to wrestle the coil back in place with the added height of the spacer, but that is no fault of the airbags; pry bar proved critical to wedge the coil back in place since I did not try the bottle jack between the frame and axle trick. After nearly a year, no leaks, bags hold air well. I put 25 psi in them for towing our travel trailer, or keep them at 10 psi for normal running around. I have also found them useful to prevent or at least reduce bottoming out the soft rear suspension that happens when off road driving with even just a couple hundred pounds in the back. Even at 25 psi they ride great and you wouldn't know they are back there at 10 psi. Highly recommend for the low cost and added versatility!

Comments
Still working great after a year. Knock on wood... no leaks to date. I would consider these essential equipment for towing, and would highly recommend for heavily loaded backcountry travels as well. I did try them near their max pressure on one trip with 5 people, roof top tent, and gear for a week of camping this summer and it was too much and felt very unsafe ped the pressure back to sub-30 psi after driving a few blocks and all was great after that!

Review from a similar Coil-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Is a great idea but awful material !! I think that if the quality of material is higher, this would be worth it !! I ordered a kit and I have a professional Install it. within an hour the air was all out !!! I took back and Found that the connections were leaking . So we replace them and next day. no air (again) in the air suspensions . Found out that the air spring is defective. Is not easy to install and is harder to get it fix ,if leaks . I don’t recommend this product unless is a higher quality!! Other wise is a headache

Easy install in less than 2 hours. I disconnected the shock absorber on one side to get a little more room, but I was still able to slip the bags in on the side I didn't disconnect. On my atlas cross sport, there was a plastic plug at the bottom of the coil in the lower control arm that needed to be removed.

Review from a similar Coil-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Install was easy on 2014 FJ Cruiser...pulled the wheels off, jacked it up a bit, and the axle dropped enough to allow room to fit the bags inside the springs. I will see how they perform when I hook up my trailer but they inflate quickly and I can see these will stop my vehicle from squatting when the cargo area and trailer are heavily loaded. Another excellent product offered by etrailer...thanks.

Comments
After a year of regular use, these bags have been great. They keep my FJ level when towing and as a result steering while towing is vastly better.

I checked with the manufacturers rep about use on your 3.5" lifted 2021 Jeep Gladiator. If your 3.5" lift project entailed change of these components then the Firestone Coil-Rite Rear Air Helper Springs, # F29ZR will not work. • Correct Air Bags for a 2021 Jeep Gladiator
The Firestone Coil-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F29ZR are a fit for a 2021 Jeep Gladiator. They install inside the airbags and then expand when pressure is added. Therefore, the dimensions change when pressure is added so I'm not sure measuring would be helpful. If you have stock coil springs they are a confirmed fit. That said, the spring is roughly 11" tall x 5" diameter.

You could indeed use the # F29ZR if you have a body lift as the suspension geometry and height wouldn't have changed. If you have a suspension lift, in order to recommend the correct solution, I'd need to know the inside diameter of the coil springs and the inside height measured from stop to stop. If you can reply with that information, I'd be happy look for a solution. I've linked to an installation video for the # F29ZR Coil Rite System.
