Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Firestone Ride-Rite air spring airline installation

Adjustable Air Pressure

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Firestone Ride-Ride air spring components

Air Spring Construction

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. Drilling may be required for some applications.

Video Transcript for Rear Air Helper Springs Installation - 2006 Ford F-250

Today on this 2006 Ford F-250 we are going to install Firestone Ride-Rite air helper springs using part number F2400. We are showing you now the components that are used to install one half of the kit. There is going to be two of everything for both sides of the vehicle. We are going to start off on our install by doing the driver side of the vehicle. The first thing we need to do to get started is to remove the old factory bump stop which is right here. There is a bolt on top that you have to get from the back side of the frame to unbolt it and it should come apart. It is a good idea to spray it down with some lubricant too to help remove it because that bolt does get rusted pretty easily. Moving on to the upper bracket, that is this piece right here, and it is going to wrap around the frame and it is going to have the spacer block that will go on top just like this. 00:54

There is going to be a bolt that goes through the bottom back through the original hole where the original bump stop used to be and there is going to be a 3/ 4 inch bolt that is going to go through the center here and hold everything up against the frame. We are going to loosen up the wire loom right here, the wire harness, and we are just going to pop it up and out of the way. We are going to install our bracket just like this and we are going to run our bolt from the outside in and let it sit on that for now. There is going to be a flat washer that goes behind that also and then the lock washer and the nut. We are just going to leave it loose. We will install the spacer right here and we will install our counter sunk bolt right here, it has got that little Allen head on it. We are going to run up from the bottom up through the original hole in the frame and then we are going to install the big flat washer, 3/ 8 thick washer, that is going to go over the bolt and then the 3/ 8 lock nut will go on top of that. At this point we can start tightening down our bolts. We will do the small ones on the bottom first and then we will do the big ones. Now we will do the top bolt. 02:18

We are going to start off with some preassembly for the air bag now for the second half and we are going to take the air bag, flip it over, and there is a threaded fitting here. This bracket is going to go right into that. We are going to take our little 3/ 8 bolt with the red thread locker on the bolt and run it into the air bag and bracket and just leave it finger tight so you can still move it around. Then our second bracket is going to fit on here and this part will slide on to the jounce stop that is already on the axle. It is going to be attached with four bolts and we can tighten these down right here. This part here is designed to touch the axle itself. Some versions of the vehicle have three different options. One we will use it just like it is, there will be one that maybe needs a little bit more space so we can use that spacer, or it might be pretty tall and it might need a spacer like this. All three of these come in a kit which is fine. Basically you have to go up there and take a test fit and see which one actually works the best. In our case we found out that on this particular vehicle that one worked. You can tighten those down also. 04:01

Next we are going to put our connector in. This is the part where the air line actually goes into the air bag. We are going to thread that in and tighten it down. Lets install this on the suspension. You are going to have to work it through the lines a little bit to get it into position and then just push it over the jounce stop right here and just slide it up next to the springs themselves. There is a U-bolt that is going to go around the springs and hold everything together. Make sure you get it as straight as possible and then tighten down the U-bolts. When you tighten down the U-bolts you want to tighten them down as evenly as possible. The next thing you need to do is get the air bag to fit into the hole into the upper bracket however it is not inflated so it is just not going to reach. What we are going to do is make a temporary air line connection, we are going to run this line into the air bag itself and we are going to fill it up with air and make it stretch and do the work for us to get it started for us. This is one of the valves that comes with it. All they do is push together and give a pull back and it releases. To release the line pull down on it a little bit and push back and kind of work it out and it will come back off. We will put the air valve on. We need to leave it aired up so we are going to thread everything over the air line. Put a lock washer on that will go on through then we will thread our nut through it until we get it started. It is a fine thread so it might be kind of hard to start. Once we have it started we will release the air and then take off the air line so you can put a wrench on there and tighten it down. 06:16

When you get close to tightening up remember there is a little stud that is pointing out of the plate of the air bag itself and it does line up the hole in the bracket. When it gets close start lining it up. We are going to find a spot to locate our air line to fill up the air bags with. You can see we have already got the passenger side done, we put it right next to the license plate which is a good easy spot to get to so we are going to do the same thing over here. Again we will install our line. We are going to push right down into the fitting, do a quick pull up, and we are good to go. Lets run the line alongside the frame rail and out to the bumper. Pull the line through the hole that we drilled out and we will just cut it off leaving a few extra inches and install the valve. Push it on to the line. It is going to get a stainless steel washer on the back side. This part will go through the hole and the nut will thread and hold everything together. All you have to do is snug it down and you are done. Now you need to zip tie the lines into the frame to make sure they do not go anywhere. The next thing you will do is put the wheel back on, add some air to the air bags, and see how they work. Lets add some air to the air bags now. You want to keep a minimum of about five pounds of pressure when you are not really using them just to help keep their shape when you are going down the road. We will put some air into them and you can see how they expand. With that quick test over with it looks like everything works. There you have it for part number F2400 from Firestone on our 2006 Ford F-250.

Installed this on my 2006 F 250, installation instructions were easy to follow. Just be ready to work getting the bump stops off (spray with penetrating oil before trying to remove. The rest of the install was easy, I followed the advice of one of the other reviews and put the air valves through the tag to avoid drilling holes in my bumper.Total time was about three hours without removing the tires and no lift. 552585

Received air bags in 3 days. Arrived in good condition. Overall installation was fairly easy. It took me about 3 hrs just because I was moving slowly and had to readjust a couple of times. Very happy with the way it turned out. Bought it because im planning on a heavy haul in a few days. Will see how it works. 491491

Excellent product. Kind of a non-novice project but once installed it works perfect! Keep mine around 50 psi to comp for my 16000 pound toy hauler. Keeps the truck level with no butt squat. Highly recommend it to those who are looking. 449880

The parts came in on time. They were installed next day. It took about two hours to install. Everything went well with the install. The air bladders work very well with my truck. No problems at all. Thank you E trailer for your support, and the follow up after the sale. GREAT JOB. 359859

The Firestone Ride-Rite Air Springs were easy for a novice "mechanic" to install. The videos were a great help. I also purchased the tubing cutter because if the air connection to the bladder is not perfectly square, the possibility of air leaks increases. I also used fuel line tubing to provided added insulation for the air lines. My suggestion prior to installation is to remove the rear tires and spare to allow plenty of room. Lastly, kudos to the helpful folks at etrailer.com. They were able to price match other businesses and were knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. Would DEFINITELY purchase from them again! 277440

Product was shipped promptly and arrived in three days. Had watched the Etrailer installation video and read through the instructions before the helper springs arrived. Installation was quick and simple and went well. Only thing I was puzzled with was which bracket was for the left side and which one was the right side that bolts on the lower bracket that goes over the Jounce stop. Once I assembled the bracket and held it in position you could easily see if you had the correct side, wrong side won't fit into place. Excellent product, performs as stated in description. Would recommend. 212085

Quickly arrived and pretty easy to install. I filled to approx 20psi just as a daily driver but already can tell a big difference in the overall handling of the truck. The rear end feels stabilizes quickly when hitting bumps and the body rill is greatly reduced.I have yet to try them with a heavy load but I have no doubt they will perform great. 2008 GMC Sierra 1500. 517454

Still a great product a year later. I have pulled heavier trailers across the country, used it for my 30ft travel trailer. Alls i need to do is adjust the pressure to my desired settings and the truck rides smoothly down the highway nice and level. Highly recommended product. Product is holding up well.

I have used the Firestone suspension air bags to adjust my 2017 F150 when carrying large cargo box loads. It worked very well for the loads I was carrying, which were between 800 lbs to as much as 1100 lbs on other occasions. My only objection is a slow leak in my left side, which may be in the left air bag itself or tubing fittings. After I installed the system, I used a soap solution to check for leaks. At the time I could not find any. Because it is a slow leak, I simply have had to top off either the left or right side air bags and I am fine to go for the day. 636096

Comments

Dont forget to check at the Schrader valve, as well. Those have been known to leak. The soap solution test works great, unless its a very slow leak.

Delivery was very quick. Everything I ordered came in great shape and complete. I installed these air bags on a 2015 F250 for hauling our 5th wheel. It took me around 5hrs more or less to install by myself. I have never done this before and kept checking everything twice. That and I used all hand operated tools. The instructions were good. But watching the installation video 1st was helpful. 638601

So far, I would give this product a 5 star rating. I must say, the installation directions from Firestone are a bit lacking. However, the installation video from etrailer made the installation a snap. I completed the installation in about 3 hours. I'm confident these Ride Rite bags will improve my hauling and towing performance when I go on long fishing trips fully loaded with gear and pulling my 19 foot boat. Also, etrailer was as good as their word when I asked them to honor their price pledge. 505966

The Firestone Ride-Rite vehicle suspension system is excellent. It allows me to easily increase the air pressure to compensate for camper tongue weight and lower pressure for a soft ride when no tongue weight exists. Kit cam quickly and the instructions were clear enough if you are mechanically inclined. If your not then don't try this because you need to have a good safe way to raise you vehicle pull the wheels off the back and work under for a couple hours. That being said once installed on my 2016 Tacoma the performance was excellent. I am currently running about 12 psi. And the hitch is about 1 1/2" higher with no load. Hooked onto my mower trailer with mower and it handled it as easily as my 2500HD. Mower is a JD 27hp 60" zero turn commercial. Haven't hooked the camper up to it but this definitely made the towing on my Taco much better. Great addition to any smaller or 1/2 ton truck that needs some beef in the back. Truck will be safer to handle loads if you do your air to match the load. I just use a bicycle pump to adjust. Easy to be accurate with each side. 405062

This system I installed on my 2012 Ford F-450 dually pickup. I love it!! I replaced a air bag system that I had put on by so called professionals. It was terrible. It mounted under the spring shackles. It helped when puling a heavy loaded trailer but rode terrible otherwise. The system I bought from e-trailer uses air bags under the rear axles. It handles heavy loads when air up to 90 psi and rides smooth when empty at 25 psi. I recommend it highly. 595195

I purchased a Ride Rite kit for my 06 Ram. This is my third kit for my trucks. I haul scrap and routinely gross 30K. I need quality running gear. etrailer provided what I needed at a great price and fast. I also needed a replacement air bag for my 2012 Ram. I found it cheaper from a competitor. Rather than order it from that vendor I gave etrailer the info and they matched the price plus a little extra. This is where I shop, and so should you. 551930

Took a few hours to get it completed, and went in as described. Have not had opportunity to test them out under load, but figure they would perform as expected. Instructions were not totally accurate, 4 bolts had changed size (to a smaller bolt than listed), but anyone with common sense could figure it out. (I did. LOL!) Wish "they" had included a "T" to inflate them equally, but purchased one at Lowes for about $6. I also "beefed up" the hose around sharp corners to protect them from getting damaged. 131693

Working great! Added an on-board compressor to the unit and use it to tow Travel Trailer. Does not get a LOT of use, but when it does, its great!

Ordered the firestone air bags. Received them a few days later and installed them in about 2 hours. Took longer than maybe the norm because I’m recovering from rotator surgery. I’m pulling a 8,100 ice castle rv Behind my Ford 150 xlt LB. they work great and feel safer going down the road. Thanks etrailer 614960

Review from a similar Firestone Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Was concerned if thls kit would fit a 2010 Silverado 2500 HD Quad cab with 6.5 ft. bed with a B&W fifth wheel turn over ball hitch. It took me 2.5 hours and every thing fit perfect. No problem with the instructions dead on, and the only holes I had to drill was in the rear bumper for the air fittings. Have had them on since November no air leaks or problems. This make my truck ride excellent with my toy hauler and other gooseneck trailer I have. Alot cheeper than a air pin box and does the same thing,no more chucking and bouncing. thanks 7291

Review from a similar Firestone Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Opened the box and in awe, I called my service guy, but he couldn't get to it for a week, so I started in. Rolled my truck up on some blocks. Removing the stock rubber bumper was easy. Then the installation. Bolting the upper housing onto the frame was the first job and was easy, except I forgot to include the spacer. So two steps later I had to unbolt it , insert the spacer and re tighten it. The rest of it went well and is now ready for the air line. Quit for the day and this morning will install the other side, which should go much easier now that I have learned from the first side. So it looks hopeful that even I can accomplish this. As a 75 year old retired surgeon that is saying a lot! Stay tuned for next installment which should review performance. 483120

  • Firestone Air Bag Kit that's Compatible with Curt Gooseneck Hitch for 2013 Ford F-250
  • We do have a Firestone air bag kit that does fit your 2013 Ford F-250 that is compatible with in-bed hitches like the Curt gooseneck # C60720 that you mentioned but it's not the # F2400. Instead you'd want the # F2703 which fits your truck and was designed to be compatible with in-bed hitches like gooseneck hitches.

  • Can Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs be Installed in 2005 Ford F-250 with 5th Wheel Hitch
  • The Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F2400 can be installed in your 2005 Ford F-250 and you should not have to do any drilling. The reason for that, according to the directions, is that when you install the upper bracket with the 3/4" bolt it will be long enough to go through the Ride-Rite bracket, your hitch bracket and the frame. If you take a look at the directions as well as the photo I added from the linked video of these springs being installed on an '05 F-250 you can...

The Andersen Ultimate Connection 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch System with Adapter part # AM3200 will not work with the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch. • Firestone Air Bag Kits for 2004 Ford Excursion 2WD and 4WD
  • There are two different Firestone rear axle air bag kits for the 2004 Ford Excursion. The Excursion 2WD uses part # F2255 and the 4WD uses part # F2251. The kit # F2400 that you referenced is for Ford pickups but not the Excursion. These two Excursion kits can be seen by clicking on the linked page. You'll notice the brackets in each kit are quite different. I recommend that you do not try to piece together all of the individual kit parts. Often getting all of the individual parts...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch and Airbag Kit Confirmed to Fit a 2005 Ford F-350
  • I have the perfect 5th wheel and airbag setup for your 2005 Ford F-350. For this, I recommend using the Reese 20K 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # RP30083 for short bed trucks and part # RP30081 for long bed trucks. In order to install either of these hitches on your vehicle, you will want to use the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches part # RP50082-58. The vehicle specific custom mounting brackets cuts installation time in half when compared...

I linked an installation video to show you the whole process. If you like you can add a compressor # F2097 to provide easy adjustment of both bags' pressure from the comfort of the cab. • Short Arm Weight Distribution System Needed for 10,000 lb Trailer Towed by a 2005 Ford F-250/F-350
  • I do have a solution to help with the sag in your tow vehicle as well as with sway control for your enclosed car hauler, but unfortunately 28-1/2" arms on a Weight Distribution (WD) system is the shortest that we have to offer. Most people like to use a sway control like the Pro Series Friction Sway Control Kit # 83660 which can be used without a WD system. You will just need a way to mount the small hitch ball. You can use the Reese Sway-Control Bracket # RP26003 if you have a 2" receiver...

  • Air Bag Kit Recommendation for 2005 Ford F-250/350 with B and W Gooseneck Hitch Installed
  • So your best solution is going to be the Firestone Air Bag Kit part # F2400 which is confirmed as a fit for your 2005 Ford F-Series Super Duty and was designed specifically for fitting trucks that have in-bed hitches like the B and W hitch your truck has. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well. For a compressor kit the part # F2158 would be a great way to monitor the air pressure and make inflating the bags easy.

  • Compatibility of Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Suspension with Curt Gooseneck Hitch
  • It'll depend on which Firestone Air Spring kit you have. If you have the # F2400, the Curt # C60720 would fit just fine for you. If you'd care to reply with the part number of the Firestone Air Bag kit you have, I'd be happy to provide you with some specifics. If you'd like a built-in compressor system that allows you to adjust the air pressure in the springs by flipping a switch in the cab, I'd recommend the Air Command Compressor system, part # F2158.

The slider on this hitch will help eliminate clearance concerns during slow-speed turns on your trip to Texas. • If you are installing just the Firestone Ride-Rite kit, # F2400, and not also adding an on-board air compressor such as # F2158, then I would estimate that it should take about 2 hours to install the kit. A professional may take less time depending on how many similar installations they have done. Individual results will vary so that 2 hours is...

  • Will a B&W 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Fit a 2006 Ford F-350 with Firestone Air Bags 2400
  • Since the B&W installation kit # BWGNRK1108-5W also uses a 3/4 inch bolt in the center hole that Firestone Ride-Rite kit # F2400 uses, and because the hitch brackets mount to the outsides of the frame and the air bag brackets on the insides of the frame, these 2 components will work together. Installation kit # BWGNRK1108-5W is correct for a 2006 Ford F-350 long bed or short bed. Hitch # BWRVK3500-5W is the correct hitch for a long bed. For a short bed use # BWRVK3400-5W. Once the...

  • Choosing 5th Wheel Install Kit and Air Bag Kit for 2006 Ford F-350 Super Duty Long Bed
  • The difference between a universal-fit 5th wheel install kit and a custom-fit kit is that the custom kit will reduce your overall installation time and the amount of drilling required. They eliminate altogether the need for frame drilling and they naturally cost more for this reason. Neither offers an absolute advantage in terms of strength but with custom kits the larger brackets tend to mean more metal-to-metal contact with the truck's frame.
