Rugged, Matte Black Finish

The sturdy steel construction is protected with a matte black finish for added durability. This unique powder coating gives etrailer hitches a carbide-like appearance and a rugged look that sets them apart from traditional glossy hitches. In addition to being rust and corrosion resistant, the tough matte coating hides dirt, scuffs, and dings better than a glossy finish.

Video Transcript for etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Chevrolet Equinox

Speaker 1: Today in this 2014 Chevrolet Equinox we're going to be having a look at, and showing you how to install the etrailer.com Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part number E98865. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. This hitch fits nicely in the cutout provided in the bumper. The rest of it is hidden nicely behind our rear fascia. On the side of your receiver, you'll find your industry standard 5/8" diameter hitch pin hole which you use a pin and clip to secure your hitch mounted accessories.

You can pick up one of those separately on our website. That's part number PC3.Welded on the bottom of our receiver, are our plate styled safety chain loops. What's nice about these, is that even if you have a very large diameter safety chain hook, such as this one, you'll still be able to easily clip on and clip off. On the end of our receiver, you'll find this collar that's welded on, not only to reinforce the receiver opening, but to give it a nice finished look. This hitch features a 350 lbs max tongue weight rating, which is the amount forcing down, and a 3,500 lbs max gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount it can pull.

It does support the use of weight distribution, and when you're using that on your trailer, you tongue weight rating increases to 400 lbs, and your max gross trailer weight rating increases to 4,000 lbs.You want to make sure that you consult with the owner's manual of your Equinox, and not exceed what the vehicle's rated for. Go by whichever number is less. Now one nice thing about this hitch, that is different than other hitches out there, it has a different type of finish on it. This is a matte black carbide finish, and this is much more durable than some of the other finishes on hitches I've seen. So what this means, by having this different finish, this hitch will be more rust resistant, and scratch resistant, for you.

So it'll look nicer for a much longer time. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch mounted accessory you may need, such as a ball mount, bike rack, or a cargo carrier. You're looking at about 14-1/2" from the ground to the top of the 2" receiver opening. And about 5" from the center of the hitch pin hole to rear most part of the back bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install, at the bottom section of the center of our rear fascia, we have this door. This will hide the hitch when it's installed.

We need to remove this first. So we can take a pair of needle nosed pliers, squeeze the tabs together at each corner as we pull it down. It will release. If we look straight up, behind where that door was, we'll find one of two things. We'll have round holes right here, on each side, or we'll have a weld nut. If we have a weld nut, we'll use a bolt and a conical tooth washer with the teeth facing up, and that'll secure our hitch in this location. Now since we don't have weld nuts, we'll take our fish wire, go through the hole, and then out the side of the bumper being that's closes to that hole. Once the wire is through our bumper beam, we'll take our spacer block, place it on the pull wire, and stick that inside the bumper beam. And then we'll thread on our carriage bolt to the pull wire. With that threaded on, we'll place that inside the bumper beam as well, and then we'll pull the bolt through the hole, remove our pull wire, and repeat the same process for the other side. Now on the side of our frame rail, right next to our bumper beam, we'll have two weld nuts. And it's the exact same on the other side of the vehicle. We'll take some spray lubricant, go inside the weld nut, and we'll take a wire brush that we have available on our website, part number 814092, and go in and out of the hole a few times, to help remove any loose dirt, debris, or possible rust that's inside. This will make it so when bolts go in a lot easier. We'll do that for every weld nut that we have. Now, with an extra set of hands, we'll raise our hitch in a position, we'll go over our carriage bolts in the middle, and we'll secure it in place with our flange nuts. Now we'll take our side bolts, with a conical tooth washer, the teeth will face away from the bolt head and towards the hitch. We'll position the hitch over the weld nuts in the frame, and secure it with our bolts. Keep in mind, everything that we do on one side, we'll repeat on the other side. Now we can start the process of tightening all of our hardware down. Now we'll torque all of our hardware, to the amount specified in the instructions. And that completes are look at, and showing you how to install the etrailer.com Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number E98865, on this 2014 Chevrolet Equinox.

Holes did not line up with those in vehicle ('14 Equinox) had to return for another hitch. Holes didn't line up on the 2nd one either. Hammer needed to be used to line up holes on drivers side. Definitely would not recommend. 619180

Comments

When a trailer hitch is constructed, softer steel is used in the side plates as opposed to the harder steel used in the crossbar and receiver tube. This allows the hitch to flex along with the vehicle to a certain degree. This flexibility can also allow the hitch to get slightly bent out of position during shipping and handling. The good news is that its very easy to fix this if you know a few tricks as shown in the linked article.

Second hitch for different car arrived as promised and was easy to install. Video on the site showed exactly how to install the hitch and wiring system. Need one more hitch so will definitely order from here and recommend to anyone needing towing or wiring solutions. Had to call tech support on first unit and they were very responsive and helpful. 593536

Customer service was on point and highly professional! Install instructions were easy to follow and they even offer a video with step by step detailed instructions if needed. Whole install from start to finish took 30 minutes doing myself. Not having an extra set of hands, I had to use a floor jack to raise hitch up into place. Jack worked perfectly. Also like to mention that hitch build quality was excellent, and all mounting hole alignment couldn't be better. Great job retailer! 533788

The hitch was delivered very quickly and installation was a breeze. The only criticism I can give is that the packaging could be better. The box had no internal protection for the hitch. When I received the hitch, one end of the hitch had punctured thru the box, although nothing was damaged, some simple packaging material could have avoided this and any possible damage. 533732

I received my hitch on Thursday as projected. Friday, I started to install it. I was amazed at how easy it was. I decided to try to install it alone with the vehicle sitting on the ground. If I needed help my son would be available later in the day but I found that is was not necessary. I had already cleaned out the threads on the weldnuts before the hitch arrived so the installation went smooth. My biggest concern was the installation of the two bolts through the horizontal tube using the fishwire provided. It was amazing. I ran the fishwire through the tube, passed it through the squared hole spacer and threaded it on to the bolt. I pulled the fishwire and next thing I knew the end of the bolt dropped through the hole right into place. I repeated the procedure with the other side with the same results. Great design. I then used my floor jack to lift the hitch high enough to pass the bolts through the hitch and start the two nuts onto the ends of the bolts. I was concerned that I might push the bolts back up into the tube as I lifted the hitch. To prevent this, I reattached the fishwire onto one of the bolts and passed it through the hole in the hitch so that as I raised the hitch I could assure that the bolt was aligned to the hole. Since I only had one fishwire I made a second one for the other bolt using some 22ga copper wire that I had around. It worked great although it would be a good idea to include a second fishwire as part of the installation parts.. Once the nuts were threaded loosely onto the ends of the bolts , I continued to raise the hitch into place as started the four bolts into the side weldnuts. Since I had already cleaned out the threads the bolts went in easily. Once all four bolts were started, I tightened them down with a ratchet and socket. I then removed the floor jack and proceeded to tighten the two nuts. Finally, I went back and torqued all six fasteners. Done - total time 20 minutes. Great design. I could not be happier. 532671

I was extremely surprised by the remarkable customer service I received from etrailer. You just don’t get that kind of service anymore. I ordered my hitch on Monday and it was delivered two days later. My experience and the product was so great that I’ve been referring etrailer to anyone that I speak with. The hitch fit perfectly and I can’t wait to use it for my up coming trip to the beach to haul our bikes. 533674

Product is as advertised.. Fit well. Finish great.. For my 15 V6 Equinox... Though only 37k on my SUV... The hitch should include a tap to clean out the holes or just state a tap will be needed... Also the access panel can be cutout to fit close around the hitch with not much effort at all for a cleaner finished look... and the wiring kit was easy as advertised also.. Though I choose to run my power line from the front to back .. since I do not have a Lift... 572592

Ordered hitch on Sept 27th. It arrived 4 days later on October 1st (with free shipping)! Loved the ability to track the shipment! Thank you for providing a link that allowed me to track the shipment!Hitch did bust through the shipping box but other than being scuffed up, it was not damaged. All the parts were there including the fishwire (two additional bolts were included (M12) apparently just to make sure but the instructions ought to say that these were extra because it kinda makes you think you forgot about something during the install). The installation videos on your website are the best! It made me realize that I could do this install. They were absolutely invaluable in explaining how to use the fishwire! Without the video I would not have known how to fish the carriage bolts and square hole "nut" into the bumper holes. The fishwire worked exactly as in your videos and was a snap to use! Thank you!Getting the hitch into the final position was a little tight and I had to exert a little force with a jack but other than that it fit like a glove.I give your hitch a rating of 9.5 out of 10. Thank You!Please let me know that you have received my comments.Dave 531807

2012 GMC Terrain

I ordered product number 13591 (Hitch) and product number 56094 (Wiring Hareness) for my 2012 GMC Terrain AWD 4 cylinder. It fit perfectly! The hitch is very simple to install. On my vehicle it had the pre-drilled and threaded holes for the side mounts but not for the center mount underneath. I followed the paper instructions included with the hitch and had to "fish" the 2 flat head bolts and square plates through the side of the frame. It was very simple. The bolts then pulled down onto the square plate and through the holes for mounting. I lifted the hitch and screwed in the side bolts and washers. I then screwed upward the two nuts into the bolts which I fished through the side of the frame and tightened each bolt. The hareness was even easier. I popped of both taillights and it clipped in just like shown in the video and paper instructions. When taking off the taillights be sure to pull straight back. You have to give it a good tug because of the straight clips behind it. Also when putting the tail lights back in be sure not to smash the rubber lining which runs above the tail ights on the vehicle itself. GREAT PRODUCT!!!! I HAVE ALREADY RECOMMENDED TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY!! 530935

2010 Saturn Vue

Purchased this trailer hitch for a 2004 Saturn Vue. First-time buyer from Etrailer. They kept me well informed of the progress of my order during processing and shipping. As with many other reviewers, my hitch arrived with one of the mounting flanges sticking out of the end of the cardboard carton. No damage, however (after all, it IS a hitch), not even a scratch. Once I had the threads on the chassis-welded nuts cleaned out, (a lot of crud & corrosion after 10 years), the hitch went on as easily as one could ask for. The video was very helpful, especially concerning the process of fishing the bolts & plates through the rear channel iron on the vehicle. Etrailer sure seems to be a well-run, first-class operation, and the product itself is of excellent quality. I am a completely satisfied customer. 531562

2014 Chevrolet Equinox

The product looked very good to me but the installation was a pain in the neck first of all the threads on the connector rails on the vehicle were terrible you need more than a wire brush and you need a power tool for the bolts also you need to put the vehicle on a lift to do it properly it took me four hours for installation but it looks great now I know why people charge $400 to install the trailer hitch probably l won't do it again next the challenge will be the wire harness will see how that comes out till next time this is the big dog take care. 550106

Comments

Any vehicle that operates for more than a year or two in northern climates will see road debris and corrosion in the hitch attachment nuts that are welded into the frame members. If the corrosion/dirt isnt severe, a wire brush and some spray lubricant will do a pretty good job of getting the threads cleaned enough so that the bolts can be easily installed. In cases where the corrosion is more severe, youll need to use a M12 x 1.75 thread tap. Use caution if an impact wrench is used to fasten the bolts. Use of an impact wrench can actually break loose the weld nuts, making installation more difficult.

2019 GMC Terrain

Well - it is installed on my '17 Terrain. I bought this vehicle in March 2019 with 18,000 miles. I am 65 and did this myself - of course I had all the tools I needed. A couple of points to be aware of. There are two threaded holes on the outside of the frame rail that will need to be cleaned out - not with a wire brush. After 2 winters in Buffalo, the holes are pretty buggered and needed to be re threaded. The bolts used are metric with special automotive threads. Checking my local auto supply houses came up zero. The internet was the answer for about $8 - be sure you order the M12-1.75 tap. Once the holes were cleaned out and threaded, it was time to mount the hitch. Extra hands are highly recommended. I have a floor jack so I could lift the hitch into place on my own. It will take some fighting to line up all the holes but not too difficult. There are only 8 bolts and the 2 by the receiver should be done first. Leave everything loose enough so that you can jockey the hitch around to line up all the holes. Took me an hour once I had all the holes ready to go. I would supply a picture but it looks like all the other pics. on this site. Watch the video so you have an idea about everything - very helpful. 644025

Very straight forward installation. Took about an hour by myself. with a helper/holder you could probably install it in about 20 minutes. It came with all the hardware and a few extra bolts. What I was expecting to be the hard part was actually very easy, You have to thread 2 bolts thru some holes in the bumper support. It came with a 3' piece of piano wire to facilitate that. I had those bolts in place in about 5 minutes. I now have a hitch with wiring for about $120 rather then the $$$ that U-Haul or the dealer wanted. 640410

A lot of times weldnuts get debris in them which makes starting the bolts pretty difficult. If you haven't already tried spraying penetrating oil like part # L10444 and letting it soak for 5 minutes then cleaning it with a brush like part # 814092, do that and see...

  • Solution for Trailer Hitch Install Bolts that Seem too Big to Thread In
  • Due to the age of your vehicle, there is an excellent chance that there is a significant amount of corrosion and road grime built up in the weld nuts in the frame of your Chevy Equinox. This build up is what is preventing the bolts from threading into the weld nuts. The best way to clean the threads is to use a spray lubricant and a wire brush like that on the battery post and terminal cleaner, part # DW00254. In some extreme cases, the corrosion is bad enough that a thread tap the same...

  • Trouble Installing Bolts for Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch on a 2013 Chevy Equinox
  • The weld nuts on your 2013 Chevy Equinox use M12x1.75x45 size bolts like what your Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76028 came with. I checked and the similar Curt # 13591 and etrailer.com # E98865 trailer hitches use M12x1.75x40 size bolts which means they are slightly shorter but not so much that it would affect anything. If you didn't already use some lubricant when you cleaned the weld nuts try spraying some WD40 in there and then letting it soak for a bit before cleaning...

  • What Is Towing Capacity for 2012 Chevy Equinox
  • In my research on your 2012 Chevy Equinox, I found that the towing capacity for models with the 2.4L 4 cylinder engine is 1500 lbs, while models equipped with the 3.0L 6 cylinder engine like yours have a 3500 lb towing capacity. This is how much the trailer can weigh by itself and still be safe. I've confirmed this information with the owner's manual. For a hitch the etrailer part # E98865 is the best way to go as it has plenty of capacity and installs easily. See attached install...

  • Replacement Hardware for Trailer Hitch on 2013 Chevy Eqinox
  • The correct hardware will depend specifically on the hitch you have for your 2013 Chevy Equinox. For example, the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76028 uses M12 x 1.75 x 45 bolts. For any hitch we do have replacement hardware, the Replacement Hardware Kit for Trailer Hitches # RHK. All you need to do is go to this product page, enter the model number of your hitch in the box that says "Hitch Item Number" and then select the correct manufacturer from the drop-down box. Simply...

  • Do I Need To Cut Holes in the Bumper of a Chevy Equinox To Install Base Plates
  • The base plate kits for your 2017 Chevrolet Equinox that we offer don't require you to cut any holes in the bumper so no worries here. If you take a look at the attached photo you will see how the arms are able to protrude through without cutting. They use an opening already present opening on the vehicle. In regards to a supplemental braking system, they will not have any adverse effect on the vehicle's physical braking components (rotors, pads, calipers etc.). When it comes to the...

  • Best Trailer Hitch for a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox AWD
  • The best trailer hitch for your 2005 Chevrolet Equinox AWD with the V6 engine is the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver part # E98865. The reason for this is because the ends of the crosstube are closed off which is greatly going to reduce the chance for rust when compared to the open ends on the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 76028. The trailer hitch on a vehicle is generally subjected to much harsher conditions due to its location which is why I feel this is important....

  • What is the Towing Capacity of a 2015 Chevy Equinox 4 Cylinder
  • The first thing you will want to check is the owners manual for your 2015 Chevy Equinox. The manual contains the manufacturers recommendations and procedures for towing. Often times they recommend a break-in period on new vehicles before you can tow. But I checked with Chevy and they have a nice trailering guide pdf you can look at. It indicates that the 4 cylinder 2015 Equinox has a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds. When properly equipped the 6 cylinder models can tow up to 3,500 pounds. Considering...

  • Tongue Weight Capacity of 2012 Chevy Equinox
  • I took a look at the online version of the owner's manual for your 2012 Chevy Equinox and it did not list a specific tongue weight capacity, which refers to the vertical weight pushing down on the hitch. Typically though a vehicle's tongue weight limit will be 10 percent of its towing capacity, which in the case of your Equinox would be 350 pounds. To verify this you can try contacting a local Chevy dealer with your VIN. If you don't yet have a hitch installed I recommend the etrailer.com...
