Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Chevrolet Colorado - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Chevrolet Colorado, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Draw-Tite Class Four Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 76004.Here's what our hitch is going to look like. It's going to sit right below our bumper and the cross tubes will be hidden right behind it. It is going to stick out just a little bit past the bumper, but not enough to really make a difference, maybe a 1/2". But if we come down, farther back on our bumper, we'll see that it's actually going to be pretty close to even with the plastic. It is a Class Four Hitch, so it's going to give us that 2" by 2" receiver tube opening, which is going to open up a lot of different options for accessories. Now the way we're going to mount our accessories is through the hitch pin hole here, on the side. It's going to accept a standard 5/8 pin and clip.

These aren't included in the kit, but you can pick them up on our website. The secondary hole towards the back of the receiver tube is going to be used exclusively for the J-pin stabilization device. The way that's going to work is, it's going to go in through the hitch pin hole, like normal, but then the hook, just going to apply pressure to whatever accessory we have on the inside of the receiver tube, and we're going to draw it down with a bolt. The J-pin's also a locking device, so it's going to keep any accessory nice and secure. Our J-pin is sold separately. Our safety chain connection points are going to be a loop-style, welded on the bottom of the receiver tube. As you can see, even with some of the really large hooks, we're not going to have too much trouble getting them on or off, 'cause there's going to be plenty of room to get those connected. As far as the weight rating goes, our hitch is going to have an 800 pound tongue weight, which is going to be the maximum downward force at that receiver tube.

It's going to have an 8,000 pound gross trailer weight rating, with the amount it can pull, including the trailer and everything loaded on it.Now, it is rated to use with weight distributions systems as well, and our weight distribution system is a separate component that's going to be installed on your trailer. That's going to bump the tongue weight up to 1,000 pounds and the gross trailer weight up to 10,000 pounds.Keep in mind that hinges are commonly rated a lot higher than the vehicle they can go on. It's always a good idea to double-check your owner's manual and never exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight.I'd like to give you a few measurements that will help you in deciding for accessories for your new hitch, such as a ball mount, bike rack or even a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hold to the outer most edge of the bumper will be right about 2-1/2". Keep that measurement in mind whenever you're looking at folding accessories.

Make sure you have adequate clearance between that and your bumper. From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, it's right about 19". That measurment will come in handy whenever you're looking for a ball mount, so you can find the appropriate riser drop to match your trailer. Now that we've seen what our hitch looks like and gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed.I went ahead and removed my spare tire. Now we're going to have four bolts that are holding in this support that's going to be directly above it. I'm using a 13 millimeter socket to pull those out.

On the back of the support here, where we took out the two bolts, we're going to have a couple U nuts that are snapped in place. Take a flat edge screw driver or a trim panel tool, and we're going to pop them off.On the driver's side, right below the frame rail or a support beam, we're going to have some wiring that's going to be attached. We're going to make sure we remove that so we don't cause any damage later on. Again, just a trim panel tool or a flathead screw driver. We're going to pop the wiring out of the way. We are going to have to remove this factory support here, but the bolts holding it in place also hold our bumper in place. So, I'm going to take a couple straps. I'm going to find a spot to hook it on the bumper, and then I'm going to run it back towards the front and find another spot to hook it on to. That way there's just a little bit of tension on it, so we can make sure that it's not going to go anywhere. We'll do that on both sides, so we have even tension, pulling forward on our bumper. Not only are we going to provide that forward pressure on our bumper, but we're also going to have support from underneath, so we're going to be using some pull jacks, since it is on a lift, but if you're at home, you can go ahead and use some jack stands. You just want to make sure that that bumper is supported, so it won't fall down. Again, we're going to put one on each side. Now, on the bottom side of our frame, holding that support bracket in, we're going to have two bolts on the bottom that are holding it in place. We're using a 21 millimeter socket to pull them out. With one of the bolts towards the front of our truck, it's going to have a couple threads in, 'cause again, we don't want that falling down when we take them all the way out.On the side of the frame, we're going to have two more bolts holding it in place. Because of the limited access, you may have to use a hand ratchet and a short socket, but it's still going to be that 21 millimeter. So, with those two bolts out of the side, we're going to want to make sure that bolt on the bottom is still in a couple threads so that beam won't come falling down, and we can go to the other side and remove the other two. So, the bolt's out on the side, we can very carefully remove the last bolt on each side from the bottom and slowly pull the bumper beam out. Now, with an extra set of hands, we're going to lift our hitch into position. You're going to want to go in between the frame and the bumper. Once you get your hitch lined up, we're going to take one of the bolts from our kit, a lock washer and a flat washer. We're going to get one bolt in on each side, at least hand tight. Once we have one bolt in on each side to help support the hitch, we can work on getting the rest of our hardware in.For our bumper, we're going to go through our bumper and through the hitch and use the factory bolts to resecure it into the frame. We're just going to get these in there, hand tight, so we can make any kind of adjustments. You may have to move the bumper a little bit, to get everything lined up.We can come back with a 22 millimeter socket and we're going to snug up our hitch bolts. With the bottom bolts in our hitch snugged, we can come back a a 21 millimeter socket and snug up our bumper bolts. We're going to come back with a 22 millimeter socket, and we're going to torque all my hitch bolts down to the specified amount in the instructions. Now, we're going to come but with this 21 millimeter socket and torque our bumper bolts to the specified amount. On the back of our receiver tube, we're going to have this tab with two small holes in it. That's where those U nuts that we pulled off our brace earlier are going to go. You want to make sure that you have the flared part going back, towards the truck. I'm going to just slide them in place. Now we're going to take our spare tire support, line it up with the holes and replace the bolts. If you pay attention, the thicker part is going to go towards the back by the hitch, and the thinner part is going to go towards the front of our truck. We're going to grab our 13 millimeter socket and run the bolts down.So with our bumper and our hitch in place, we can remove the straps and the jack stands that we're supporting it. Now that the hitch is installed, all we have left to do is put our spare tire back. That'll finish up your look at the Draw-Tite Class Four Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 76004, on our 2018 Chevrolet Colorado.

Great products the trailer hitch went on as advertised. After reviewing the video twice to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I got everything ready and started I did the work in my garage using jack stands and straps the video suggested. After getting the bolts loose (actually that was the hard part) my wife helped me with the removal of the old part. After getting the hitch in place my wife got one bolt in one side I got one on the other side. With her assistance wiggling the bumper I got all the bolts in. It looks great Afterwards I got the trailer wiring connector installed without any problems. Oh by the way I'm 71 and my wife is 72. Thanks for a great product and excellent videos 758695

Install was relatively straightforward. Taking out the false cover from the bumper took a little more effort than I thought, but the new cover popped right in. Making sure to have the right tools would make this install much simpler. I did not have a crimper for the butt connectors. Tried it first with standard pliers, ended up using vise grips to solve the problem. Other than that, crimping wires underneath your truck is a bit of a hassle, but definitely doable. All parts worked as expected and all pieces connected easily. Now for the hitch install... 739518

This product is great and just what I needed for my Colorado Pick up. I used it to haul my fishing boat and for an extender for my bicycles. The seller is awesome and remains in contact to ensure that the product is performing to the specifications needed. When I service my truck the person who sold me the truck wanted to know where I got the hitch! Excellent product and my nephew installed it in no time. 447524

Incredible fit in my new 2017 GMC Canyon. We are talking factory perfect. The box was perfect - no dings, bends or dents to pry back - Flawless fit. My pix say it all. The tuck under the frame is laser-perfect. Jacked into place like butter on toast - smooth. The finish is incredible - the welds look perfect - the hardware wrapped perfect. I mean 10-out-of-10 perfect. This is my third hitch from etrailer.com, and I've bought a couple harnesses for one-off projects - and I keep being impressed. Keep it up!! 420443

Great service; great product. Received everything in 3 days to Southern California. About 3 hours total install time utilizing the EXCELLENT video showing how to splice to the factory GM harness. Very, very valuable. I could not recommend etrailer any higher. Many thanks! BTW I prefer the DrawTite, because they retain the spare tire brace. Don’t like having parts left over. 470287

Receiver was great, I liked how it allowed for 8 bolts mounting instead of just the four like all the others, that's why we chose the Drawtite receiver. 485833

Trailer tow bar and wire harness just arrives so I don't have a comment about its actual performance. It looks good, no reason to suppose there is a problem. Michael, the agent who followed this through was very helpful. The is one issue. The box arrived via UPS. It was immediately obvious that the two ends of the tow bar with the bolting flanges had penetrated the card board. As large as the box is, it appears there needs to be more (Styrofoam?) blocking at these ends and perhaps in the middle. I'll try to send a photo; having trouble uploading it here. 450391

Had to expand out the vertical attachment plates about an eighth of an inch to allow it to fit over the frame. Not to difficult to do, I believe they were pushed in slightly during shipment. I expected to have to fight with the bolt alignment ... but the fit was perfect. I selected this hitch over the others because it utilized all 8 factory attachment points (vs only 4) to make it as strong as possible. 747211

Very quick turn around from the time of order and date received. I watched an installation video and determined that I could install the hitch with help to lift and hold. I used jack stands to support the bumper and straps to hold the bumper in place. I struggled getting the factory bolts loose but otherwise the installation was slick. A nice addition to my 2019 Colorado. 728338

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2020 Chevy Colorado With the Most Ground Clearance
The trailer hitch receiver with the most ground clearance for your 2020 Chevy Colorado is the the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98909 along with the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13176. When we test fit these hitches on a 2020 Chevy Colorado we found they measured 18-3/4 inches from the top of the receiver to the ground (about 16-1/2 inches from the bottom of the receiver to the ground). Their counterparts from Draw-Tite were close, with the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver...

  • Why Can't the Factory Bumper be Used for Towing After an Aftermarket Hitch is Installed
The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 76004 is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Chevrolet Colorado and will work well for you. The Draw-Tite Max-Frame is a Class IV trailer hitch with a 2" receiver tube opening. The hitch has a gross trailer weight (GTW) rating of 8,000 lb and tongue weight (TW) rating of 800 lbs though you will need to verify your vehicle's GTW and TW ratings as the lower of the two will be your limiting factor. I have attached a photo of the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # 76004 installed on a Canyon. Although it is not perfect, you can see that the receiver end is right under the rear bumper. Since the receiver sits below the horizontal bar on the hitch, it will be tucked up behind the bumper and much less visible than the Curt hitches. This is a Class lll hitch and it has a 2 inch receiver opening. If you plan on doing some towing you might be interested in etrailer...

  • Why Cant Original Bolts be Used to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2016 Chevy Colorado
The bolts included with Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 76004 for your 2016 Chevy Colorado are appropriately rated for the hitch capacity. The ones on the truck may not be so it is best to use the included bolts. You can still use Loctite on them if you want. I like the stick version of the Blue Loctite, # LT37643, because it just makes it easier to apply. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. If that is the case then yes but you will always need to abide by the weakest rated component which is your vehicle.
