Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda CX-3

Today on our 2016 Mazda CX3, we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Draw Tite Class One Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part number 24933. This is what our hitch looks like fully installed. You are going to see a little bit of the cross bar right underneath the muffler, and you're going to have your receiver tube opening coming out right in the middle. Now this is a class one hitch, so it's going to be an inch and a quarter by and inch and a quarter receiver tube opening. Now this is going to use a standard half inch pinning clip. It is not included in the kit, but you can pick one up on our website using part number PC-2.

As far as the safety chain loops, they're going to be welded on the bottom here. It's a rolled steel stock. As you can see, you're going to have plenty of room getting any hook on or off without interfering with anything else. Now this hitch features a 200 pound tongue weight capacity and that's going to be the force pushing down. Now it also has a 2,000 pound gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount that it can pull. Now, I do want to mention you want to check with your vehicle's owner's manual to make sure that your vehicle can handle that capacity.

Now I'm going to give you a few measurements to help you in picking out accessories for your new hitch, such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is four and a quarter inches. From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube is 11 and a quarter inches. Before we begin our installation, I'd like to go over the tools that you'll need to complete it. Now here we just have a 3/8th ratchet as well as a torque wrench, a 7/8th wrench, and a 17 millimeter wrench, as well as a 7/8th socket, a 17 millimeter deep well and short well socket, a universal adaptor for our 3/8th ratchet and torque wrench, a short three inch extension, a nine inch extension, and a small flat inaudible 00:02:02 screwdriver. Now that we've gone over some of these things, let's go ahead and show you how we get it installed. To begin our installation, we're going to need to lower our exhaust and we're going to have two rubber hangers on each side.

I'm just going to take some spray lubricant and spray them down to help get them off a little bit easier. Before we lower our exhaust, I'm going to put a strap to support it so it doesn't fall down all the way. We should be able to pry the rubber isolator off of the hanger. We're going to come right where out exhaust cutout is right here and we're going to go towards the front of the vehicle. You're going to have two studs with two nuts on them and we're going to be removing these two nuts on this side as well as on the other side of the vehicle. We're going to be using a 17 millimeter socket to take these off.

Then we're going to be keeping these nuts and reusing them later. So we're going to put them in a safe spot. We're going it repeat the same process on the other side. Next up in our installation if we come to our back bumper and we come underneath right behind the muffler, we're going to have a plastic panel right here and on either side we're going to have a pushpin clip. Now you can either use a trim panel tool remover or a flathead screwdriver, pop out the center section, and then come back and we'll release the outer portion and our clip will come out. Now if you come back to the panel underneath, right on the inside of where our clip came out, there's a tab. If you take a flathead screwdriver and just push in on that tab, it'll release the panel and let it come down. Now with our hitch being installed, we're not going to able to reinstall this panel, so we're going to give it back to the owner. Now with an extra set of hands we're going to get our hitch put in place, we're going to go over our exhaust. Now I do want to mention that this tab on the passenger's side needs to go to the outside of the factory tow hook. Then we're just going to use the studs that are existing in the bumper and reuse our factory hardware. We're just going to get those hand tight right now. Now this is going to be a little hard for you to see, if you can see at all, but we're just going to put all our fasteners, two on each side, and we're just going to get them hand-tight right now so the hitch will support itself. Next we're going to come to our factory tow hook here and we're going to take our carriage bolt along with our square hole spacer and we're going to insert the bolt into the spacer. Then we're going to take our round hole spacer and it's going to slide in between our hitch and our tow hook. We're going to line up the hole so that we can feed the carriage bolt through. Then we're going to come back with our conical toothed washer with the teeth facing the hitch and then come back with a nut. Now, with all of our hardware loosely in place, we can start to torque everything down to the specified amount in the instructions. Now when it comes to the four bolts, the two one each side, I did find it easier if I got a long extension, went right between the hitch and the exhaust cutout, and then had a swivel on the end of it. Again, I'm using a 17 millimeter socket. Now to make it easier to get into the bolt behind the fascia, on the outside bolts, you're going to want to use a shorter extension with the swivel in your socket. Now that we've got all our hardware torqued down, I'm going to go ahead and reinstall our mufflers and I'm just going to put a little bit of penetrating oil on the hangers here. Make it a little bit easier going in the rubber isolator. That'll finish up the look at the Draw Tite Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part number 24933 on our 2016 Mazda CX3.

LOVE that you do this. Very smart! The products worked great. I will say that install was super tricky due to the super tight space on the inside of the bumper. So any insights to help folks like me best navigate install is the only potential improvement I can think of. Other than that...awesome in all other respects. Love the quality and the customer service to date. So thanks for running a good business guys! 497168

Overall the install went really well. it was a little tight but using different extensions worked. you will need the deep 17 socket. makes it much easier. I did not have to leave any trim pieces off either. I watched the video first which was a big help. I back the car up on the ramps and there was plenty of room to work. 561918

The order process was easy and the video on the web page, along with the pdf file downloaded installation instructions made the install a breeze for my mechanic. FYI, we ordered this hitch for a 2019 CX-3 and it fit perfectly. Customer service was great too, as I received several emails confirming my order and a follow up email. 545230

Jameson and Donna P. were very helpful with my order. An item was out of stock and Donna quickly noticed this and ordered it directly from the manufacturer and updated my delivery date and my shipping address. Everything arrived on time and that was appreciated. Jameson answered my initial concerns and explained in detail what I would need to complete the job. Thanks to both and etrailer. I never realized there was so much to learn about towing a trailer, but they made it easy to learn. 403175

Yes, the Draw Tite hitch # 24933 does come with a set of printed instructions that have a list of all of the tools you'll need to complete the job. I attached a link to this page to see the instructions and also attached a picture from them that shows the tool list.

  • Curt or Draw Tite Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Mazda CX-3 for Bike Rack
For a bike rack the Draw Tite part # 24933 is the better choice as Curt requires a stabilizer strap like part # 18050 with their Class I hitches when carrying a non-supported load like a bike rack. You'll be much happier with the Draw Tite over the Curt.

  • Concealed Trailer Hitch for a 2016 Mazda CX-3
When Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24933 is installed only the receiver will be showing on your 2016 Mazda CX-3. I have included a picture from the instructions showing he hitch installed for you. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory is rated for use with a Class I trailer hitch. Also, with a bike rack, you are limited to 2 bikes maximum on a Class I hitch.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver and Adapter for 1-1/4 Inch Trailer Hitch on 2018 Mazda CX-3
There is not a 2 inch hitch receiver available for your 2018 Mazda CX-3, so to make your Kuat Bike Rack compatible, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24933

  • Does a Trailer Hitch Decrease Ground Clearance on a 2017 Mazda CX-3
The bottom of the receiver portion of trailer hitch # 24933 for your 2017 Mazda CX-3 will be approximately 9-1/2 inches up from the ground. There are some parts of the vehicle that hang a bit lower on the vehicle itself but as far as at the end of the CX-3 the hitch will be the lowest point. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory is rated for use with a Class I trailer hitch. Also, with a bike rack,...

  • Trailer Hitch Fit Recommendation for a 2017 Mazda CX-3
Officially we have to recommend that you always stay with the recommendation of the manufacturer on towing as they are who the warranty of the vehicle is with and they are who would have tested the vehicle for towing. That being said we realize that a lot of people ignore their owners manual and tow with vehicles that aren't designed for it and allegedly do not have any problems. So our hitch manufacturers make hitches for these vehicles as there is a demand for them but it's a situation...

  • Do Draw-Tite Trailer Hitches Require a Stabilization Strap Like Curt Hitches for a 2016 Mazda CX-3
Curt is the only manufacturer that requires the use of stabilization strap # 18050. No other manufacturers require it though you can still use it if you want to. The idea is that the strap reduces some of the stress on the hitch. Uhaul hitches are just rebranded hitches from other hitch manufacturers so it is a Draw-Tite or a Curt too. Any accessory you put in a hitch is going to move. This is because the shank of the accessory has to be a little smaller than the receiver opening so...

  • Recommended Ball Mount for 2018 Mazda CX-3 that Has Draw Tite Hitch
With Class I hitches like the Draw Tite part # 24933 that you referenced you have to use the ball mount that the hitch manufacturer requires which in this case is the Draw Tite part # 3593. Then for hitch balls you'd want the part # 19258 for a 2 inch ball or part # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch ball. You'll want trailer wiring too which for that the Tekonsha kit part # 118718 is the kit I recommend as it installs easily and has a very reliable converter box.

  • Which Bike Racks are Compatible with Class I Hitches for 2016 Mazda CX-3
Sounds like you have a Class II bike rack by Yakima and would like to install it in the Draw Tite hitch part # 24933 which is a confirmed fit for the 2016 Mazda CX-3. Nearly all Yakima 1-1/4 inch hitches are Class II only so there's no way I can recommend a hitch that would work with your bike rack since all of the hitches for your vehicle are Class I. Only solution would be to go with a bike rack that is Class I compatible. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed...

  • 2016 Mazda CX-3 Hitch Recommend and Explanation on How Many Bikes Class I Hitch can Carry
Class I hitches can only carry up to 2 bikes on a bike rack. The problem is that additional bikes puts more weight on the hitch, but what really is the problem is the location of the weight. The additional bikes end up being so far away from the hitch that the weight gets basically multiplied due to the leverage of the distance. It is kind of like when you are changing a car tire and the lugs are really tight. If you use an extended breaker bar, it is easier to loosen the lug nuts. The...

Hitch adapters can sometimes be handy for a quick-fix, but since your 2016 Mazda CX-3 can only accept a light-duty 1-1/4-inch hitch I really cannot recommend using any type of hitch adapter. Here's why. Any type of adapter, such as the Brophy # HT5R, will cost you half of your hitch's rated capacity. So a 200-lb-rated Class I hitch like my recommended Draw-Tite # 24933 will have only a 100-lb capacity if used with the Brophy adapter. The reason for this loss of hitch capacity is that...
