Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda CX-5

Today on our 2016 Mazda CX-5 we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Curt Class III Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C13315. Here's what our hitch looks like fully installed. The cross tier's going to be hidden underneath, and it is a class III, so it's going to give us that two-inch by two-inch opening. It has a nice, reinforced collar, giving it that nice clean finished look. Now our safety chain loops are going to be a rolled steel stock style welded to the bottom of our receiver tube, and as you can see we're not going to have any issue getting most size hooks on or off. Now, our hitch is going to use a standard 5/8 pin and clip. It's not included, but you can pick one up on our website using part number PC3.

Our hitch is going to feature a 600 pound tongue weight and a 4,000 pound gross trailer weight. Now, I do want to mention you always want to double check with your vehicle's owner's manual to make sure it can handle pulling that. Now I'd like to give you a few measurements to help you in deciding for new accessories for your hitch, such as a ball mount, bike rack, or even a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is four inches. Now from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening is 13 inches. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show you how we got it installed.

To begin our installation we're going to need to come to each side of our frame rail in the back, and that's going to be right underneath our muffler, right behind our muffler, and right above the tailpipe right here on each side. Now if we look on the side of our frame rails here we're going to see some tape or stickers that are covering up some holes. Now, we're going to need to remove the stickers that are covering up our holes because we're going to be using that to mount our hitch. Now, I'm just going to take a flat-head screwdriver and scrape away the sticker, and you can use pretty much anything you have available, but we're just going to tear away any of the sticker and making sure we can get access to the hole, and we're going to repeat that for all the holes. There's going to be two on each side. With all the stickers removed we're going to need to lower our exhaust.

Now, I'm going to be using a strap to support it. That way when I lower it down it doesn't completely fall down. I'm just going to find somewhere to hook this hook on my strap. That way it's going to prevent my exhaust from coming all the way down. Now we're going to have two rubber hangers that are going to be directly behind our tailpipe on each side. I'm using an exhaust hanger remover tool to remove these, and it's just going to push that rubber isolator off of the stem of our exhaust hanger here, and if you don't have one of these tools, you can also use a pry bar and find something to pry against the rubber isolator and push it off.

Now, we're going to have two more on the other side, one right here at the bumper and then one right behind our tailpipe. Now you want to make sure that you have enough clearance to get the hitch in between your muffler and your bumper. On each side of our frame rail, we're going to have a wire harness that's going to be attached using this plastic clip. Now, we're going to need to remove the plastic clip and make sure the wire harness is out of the way before we put the hitch up. I'm just going to take a flat-head screwdriver and pry on the clip a little bit, and it should pop out. We're going to do the same thing on the other side as well. Now if we bring our attention to our hitch itself, on the inside of our side brackets here, we're going to need to install our flat washers that come in our kit. To make things a little bit easier to get . Once we go to get everything in place, I'm actually just going to tape my flat washer to my hitch. Then we don't have to worry about it falling off. I'm just going to line it up, take a little bit of tape, and it'll hold it in place. Now we're going to do that for all three remaining holes on our hitch. Now, we're going to need to get our hardware in place. I do want to mention this furthest rear hole on the side of our frame here on the driver's side, sometimes it is a weld nut inside of there, and sometimes it's just an open hole. In our application we don't have a weld nut, so we're going to need a fish wire, our bolts in, to get them in place. Now, I'm going to take my fish wire here with the coiled end, and I'm going to feed it through the hole in the side of my frame, and then I'm going to have it come down through the large hole right here. Now, once I have that through, I'm going to take my spacer block, and I'm going to slide it over the coiled end of my wire. Then I'm going to take my half-inch carriage bolt. I'm going to thread it on to the end of my wire, and now we're going to push our hardware into the frame and we're going to pull it out so it's coming out the side of our frame here, and make sure you leave the fish wire attached, because that's going to help you when we go to put the hitch in so the bolt doesn't fall through. Now, we're going to repeat that same process on the passenger side. Now with an extra set of hands we're going to get our hitch into place. You want to go over your exhaust, and you want to be mindful of those wires that we pulled off the side of our frame as well. Now, we're going to take the fish wire and we're going to go through the furthest rear hole on our hitch, and you may actually need to push the bolt back into the frame to get the hitch into place. Once we have our bolt through, the hitch will support itself from the bolt coming from our frame rail. We need to go under and remove our pole wire. Then we're going to come back with a flange nut, and we're going to secure it to our hitch right here. We can now take our M12 bolt and our conical tooth washer and you're going to want to make sure that the teeth are facing the hitch, and we can go and install our hardware towards the front, and we're just going to thread it in. Now, we're going to repeat that process for the other side as well. Now I'm going to come back and I'm going to snug up all my hardware, and I'm going to be using a 19-millimeter socket. We'll repeat that for all the remaining hardware. Now again using a 3/4-inch socket, I'm going to come back and I'm going to torque down all my hardware to the specified amount in the instructions. We're going to repeat that for all our remaining hardware. Now all we have left is to reinstall our hangers back on our exhaust. Now, if your hangers are a little stiff and it's hard to get on, you can take a little bit of penetrating oil or any kind of spray lube. Even soap and water will help, and if you just spray a little bit on the post that the hangers sit on, it should slide on a little bit easier. That'll finish up our look at the Curt Class III Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C13315, on our 2016 Mazda CX-5.

I received my hitch and installed it on the same day. This is the first time I've ever received installation instructions for my specific vehicle for an item install. There were no surprises or complications with the install. The provided instructions were that phenomenal! Great work etrailer! 496245

After a year of use, the hitch is still as solid as the day it was installed. Never any issues, no rust, still solid. When I get a new vehicle will not hesitate to buy one again.

Ordered the leading competing hitch from another source. When received it looked like it was welded on a Friday. the face plate was crooked by a quarter inch and the receiver box had been welded at an equal angle to make the finished product straight. The other source stated the first hitch had to be received before they would ship a replacement. I immediately ordered the Curt hitch from etrailer.com. The product is excellent. Looks great and installed easily. 526925

Curt hitch continues to work great however the Tekonsha wiring kit I bought is garbage. Failed after a short period of time and was replaced with the Curt wiring kit. Save yourself time and money and buy the Curt kit in the first place.

Installation took me a bit more than expected, mostly because I did it alone, but with two people should be very easy. I recommend to use ramps to make it easy and safe to work, also the soapy water trick is really helpful to lower the exhaust. Product seems to be well built, here are some pictures of my final result. 563595

I received the product within 72 hours of ordering. The box was a little damaged, but the hitch was in fine shape after inspection. I ordered this hitch for my Cx5 and another Curt hitch for the family minivan. The intended purpose is for a 4 bike carrier which we also purchased in this order. I installed the hitch in about 40 minutes by myself. I just got the hitch into general position with a jackstand on one side while I bolted in the other side. Once all the bolts were well started I removed the jackstand and torqued all the bolts. The only reason I did not give this 4 or 5 stars is for two reasons the first is when installing you have to remove a wire tie down on both sides during installation they don't reattach to anything which I feel there is a reason they were anchored and curt should have a hole to accept the wiring anchor. The second reason almost made me return this product. I watched the install video after I had everything unpacked and ready to go on and in the video it says if you are going to use a bike/ utility carrier that does not have a support wheel you need to add a support strap. WHAT!?!?! It doesn't say this really anywhere on the products page. The Drawtite doesn't require a strap. The only reason I got the Curt is because it's Made in America. I would not buy this hitch again I would get the drawtite. If I wanted to use straps I would have bought a strap on bike carrier. Also how do they get away with a 600lb tongue limit if a bike carrier with 4 bikes combined weighs less than 150lbs. The highest mechanical advantage numbers I can come up with are around 300lbs. Which would be if all the bikes are at the farthest part of the upper arm. (I'm an electronic engineer and love nerding out on stuff like this) Anyways, to do again I would buy the Drawtite. 439545

Great product. An exact fit for my 2015 Cx-5. Bolt on goodness. It wasn’t difficult at all to install. A friend and I were able to bolt it on in about 40 minutes, it is kinda heavy. The videos from etrailer were especially helpful and accurate. The package arrived very quickly. About 2 days I think. Very sturdy product. Holds my bike rack no problem, maybe even a small trailer, could even get that boat I’ve always wanted? ?? Only one small issue, when I received the box the hitch was poking out. Not sure if that happened when I picked it up or if it happened sometime on the delivery route. Hat being said it was not damaged at all. Not a scratch so it’s pretty strong. I would definitely purchase this product or any other from etrailer again. Good customer service too. 471135

Ok, just installed it. Guaranteed to work with 2017 Mazda CX-5. George has been terrific with his follow up emails and getting it to me on time. Some tips: 1. Download the install guide from Curt. Has color pics. 2. Takes about 2 hours. 3. Need two people for actual install. Prep only requires 1 person. 4. Don't need to remove all four exhaust hangers. It's a pain to remove anyway. Only removed 3. 5. The bolt holes on the frame are covered by tape. Not easily visible because they are covered by black sealant. Shine a flashlight and you'll see them. Scrape away excess sealant against the frame so they don't get in the way of the hitch when sliding it into place. 6. After you slide the hitch back, screw in two bolts (not all the way yet), then lower the rear most part and thread the wire through the hitch bolt hole, then you can raise the rear hitch up. 7. It takes a bit a wiggling to pull the wire and bolt through the rear holes. Once one side is it, the other side is easier because the holes are already lined up. 8. Oh the plastic cover that you have to take out---after you remove the clips, you have to push the tabs with a screwdriver (located in the outer middle of the cover) to completely release the cover. 419390

Just finished installing our Curt trailer hitch on our Mazda CX-5. The directions were easy to follow. We finished the installation in just under two hours. Make sure to have a silicone type spay to easily facilitate the removal of the muffler from it's brackets and rent/borrow a torque wrench before starting the install. 738137

Bought for my Mazda CX-5 to only carry a bike rack (1-Up). Dealer wanted $400 and local shops wanted $150 for the hitch and another $100 to mount it. Instead I ordered my hitch from etrailer online (best price anywhere), it was delivered before the week was over and I mounted in my garage by myself in an hour (after renting a torque wrench from my local auto parts store). 699476

Really happy with this hitch receiver. I'm using it primarily for motorcycle haulers (rather than a trailer), so the tongue weight capacity was important for me. It's rock solid. The way it mounts to the frame makes it pretty easy to install, and to remove the captive nuts that you fish into the frame rails if you end up removing the receiver. I've already had it installed on two different cars in the year that I've had it, and it was pretty fast and easy to move it from one CX-5 to the other. The only downside is that the 2" receiver tube itself is welded just slightly off level (a few degrees clockwise from level), which would not be noticeable at all if you were connecting a trailer, but results in my bike haulers sitting slightly unlevel. Keep in mind if you plan on using it for bike haulers attachments. Overall, I'm really happy with it. 690136

This hitch fit my 2018 Mazda CX-5 perfectly. The instruction were clear and accurate. It did take me longer than the “novice” installation time prediction. Here are my installation observations: 1) make sure the hitch sits above the bumper so it slides in correctly 2) use some liquid detergent or rubber lube to slide the rubber hangers back onto their posts 3) have someone help you because at 51 lbs. the hitch is hard to handle by oneself 4) the included guide wires are extremely helpful; a mirror and flashlight helps get the holes and bolt lined up correctly The hitch arrive soon after ordering it. Overall, I am completely satisfied with my experience with etrailer. 677687

Perfect fit. I chose this hitch because the install method is comparable to the OEM factory hitch (just the receiver sits lower so no bumper cutting). I was able to complete the install by myself in ~1.5 hours. The installation video that etrailer posts was very helpful and the only reason I referenced the written instructions was for the bolt torque specs. 674285

Attached this hitch and wiring package to my Mazda CX-5. Easy installation if you watch the helpful video to ease the effort. Used the hitch with a 4X8 trailer to travel more than 2,000 miles from Washington to So. California and back. Absolutely no problem. This is the third or fourth hitch and wiring I've purchased from etrailer over the years to use on various vehicles. Always easy to install and delighted with their support. 667654

The hitch arrived in fairly decent shape although its not well secured in the box so it bounces around and pokes holes in the box which is unnecessary. The instructions are precise and very well presented, so as long as you prepare in advance by studying them, you should have very few issues. The installation went very well for me but i would highly recommend ramps to jack up the back a foot or so. Overall i am very pleased with the outcome. 654674

This was my second trailer hitch installation. My first installation was a lot easier because it was on a small truck and there was a lot more space to work in. I read the instruction which came with the hitch several times, and I watched a couple of installation videos - which is a must for any first timers. I used large channel locks to remove the rubber muffler hangers instead of a crow bar.. using lubricant spray made removal a lot easier. I attempted to install the hitch twice. The first time was a disaster because the hitch was too heavy for me to 'fit' into position by myself. The process for feeding the bolts though the frame worked great, I'm impressed with the fish-wire process. The second attempt I used my floor jack to assist me with the lifting into position, ounce I cleared the muffler and was able to tuck the hitch behind the bumper everything fell into place. The second attempt took me about 30 minutes. The hardware package of nuts, bolts & washers included an extra bolt and washer which confused me ... I worked in factory where we included hardware package consisting of installation bolt and washers and some my helpers would 'throw in' extra bolts and washers for 'just in case installation problems' - and I had to explain that although a nice jester - it confuses the installer if there is left-over hardware. Anyway this is a get product, and there seems to be plenty of installation support (instructions & videos). 652250

Not terribly difficult to install, IF you follow the instructions carefully. You can easily create complicated problems for yourself if you rush. Structurally, the hitch is great. Hauled myself and all of my personal belongings on a thirteen hour drive. Highly recommend this product, especially if you can install it yourself. 643871

Fits and found I needed a partner for the install. Draw tite fit but exhaust kept hitting it and no way to stop it from hitting the hitch. Etrailor took back the hitch and paid shipping. All worked out well except that I had two hitch installs. Curt fit well and no rattling 637609

  • Comparing Curt 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver to Other Options for 2018 Mazda CX-5
That is a great question. Our pricing reflects the manufacturer pricing and many other factors at any given time. If you are interested in that Curt hitch, then I recommend the etrailer.com hitch which is identical to that hitch with the difference being the powder coat color. The # C13315 is gloss black and the # e98902 is the matte black carbide finish. Your other option for the higher rated capacities is the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76138 which has a slightly...

The Curt hitches part # C13127 and # C13315 are both a fit for your 2016 Mazda CX-5 whether it's the mid year update or the older style 2016 model. At first one hitch was designed to fit the newer and older model but then the figured out they both fit both models. So essentially you have two similar hitches that install differently for the same vehicle with slightly different capacities. The part # C13315 has the higher capacities at 600 lbs tongue weight and 4k total trailer weight...

Neither hitch receiver require a particular wiring harness. The wiring harnesses recommended match the manufacturer of the hitch. With Curt Hitch # C13315 we recommend Curt Wiring # C56310. With Draw-Tite Hitch # 76138 we recommend Tekonsha Wiring # 118563. Draw-Tite and Tekonsha are owned by the same parent company. Technically either wiring harness can be used with either hitch and they both work with LED lights. Curt does require a support strap # 18050 when carrying a bike rack...

Please note that Curt does NOT require use of their support strap # 18050 with this hitch although they do require it for some other hitches. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13315 is a confirmed fit for your 2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve. I confirmed this with my contact at Curt. In regards to installation, how many of the exhaust hangers did you remove? If you just removed the rear two exhaust hangers then that might be why you cannot maneuver the trailer hitch up into place as you will need to remove all four hangers in order to drop the muffler low enough to slide the trailer hitch into place. Also, there is...

  • How Would Ball Mount Height be Picked out for Trailer Hitch Installed on 2015 Mazda CX-5
I attached an FAQ that details how to pick out the correct ball mount. Picking out the correct ball mount will allow your trailer to sit as level as possible. Basically you will first measure the height from the ground to the top of the receiver opening on the hitch while on level ground. Next, you will measure the coupler height from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler when the trailer is on level ground. Next, you will need to compute the difference. If the hitch height...

  • Will the Curt Hitch C13127 From a 2013 Mazda CX-5 Fit a 2017 Mazda CX-5
I do have an option for you but the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver C13127 will not fit the 2017 Mazda CX-5 due to a redesign. Instead, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13315 is the correct on you will need to use on the 2017 model.

  • Class III Trailer Hitch Installation Points on 2016 Lexus NX 200t
The Curt Class III hitch # C13315 made for your 2016 Lexus NX 200t does indeed use a different mounting point than the Draw-Tite # 75956. The reason is that the higher tongue weight (TW) capacity of the Curt hitch, 600-lbs, requires installation on a different section of the frame. My contact at Curt confirmed this for me. The other hitches' TW capacities are 350-lbs. I'd definitely go for the Curt hitch for your car. All hitches fit your car, install without drilling and come with the...

  • Trailer Wiring Recommendation for 2017 Mazda CX-5
For your 2017 Mazda CX-5 the correct Curt trailer wiring harness is the part # C56377. The other kits you mentioned are not a fit for your vehicle so they would not work. Not all vehicles can handle the additional amperage draw of the trailer taillights on the vehicle taillight circuits. Those vehicles need setup that draws power from the battery. Some vehicles have higher rated circuits that can handle this, and others need to have the power drawn straight from the battery to protect...

  • What is the Difference Between a Class II and a Class III Hitch?
The difference between the Class II and Class III hitches has to do with their Gross Trailer Weight (GTW), their Tongue Weight (TW), and their Hitch Receiver Size. Class II trailer hitch receivers have a 1-1/4 inch receiver and can be rated up to 3,500 lbs in GTW and up to 525 lbs in TW. Class III, on the other hand, have a 2 inch receiver and have up to 8,000 lbs GTW and 800 lbs TW. I will attach a help article that goes in to more detail for you. A good example of a Class II hitch...

  • Tips for Routing Trailer Wiring Harness Power Wire to Battery on 2016 Mazda CX-5
The most direct route to run trailer wiring power wires for harness # 118564 on your 2016 Mazda CX-5 is to follow along a frame rail (there are likely other wires or lines you can wire tie the power wire to). Avoid any areas that might pinch or burn the wire such as suspension, exhaust, and engine components. I actually wrote a help article which I have linked for you that has tips for routing the power wire including a few different methods.

  • Is An Anti-Rattle Hitch Pin Included With A Trailer Hitch
It seems that the person you spoke with is confused. A stabilization strap and an anti-rattle bolt do not serve the same purpose. A stabilization strap helps support the non-trailer load on the hitch, while an anti-rattle bolt helps to eliminate the rattle or wobble of the shank in the trailer hitch. Per Curt's warranty, the # 18050 stabilization straps need to be used with all non-trailer loads. I spoke with my contact in Curt's technical department who confirmed that the stabilization...

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for 2016 Mazda CX-5
For a transmission cooler for your 2016 Mazda CX-5 there isn't an option as your transmission does not allow an aftermarket cooler to be installed. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller part # 90195. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer...

  • Recommended Towing Setup For 2016 Mazda CX-5 With Brake Controller For Trailer With Brakes
For your 2016 Mazda CX-5, I'm happy to help. I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C13315. This is an easy bolt on application that has a gloss black powder coat over a protective base coat for rust resistance. For this hitch I recommend the B&W Tow & Stow 2-Ball Mount - 2" Hitch - 5" Drop, 5-1/2" Rise - 10K - Black # BWTS10037B. This ball mount is adjustable to ensure you have the right fit to tow your trailer level. It also comes with two hitch...

  • Should the Side Bracket of the Curt # C13315 be Bent in Towards Middle of a Mazda CX-5
Thank you for the picture! From the picture that you sent it in simply looks like that bracket got bent during shipping. Your friend should be able to bend it back so that it fits their vehicle. I can guarantee that if you put the trailer hitch up like you are going to install it on their vehicle you will see that the bent bracket will cause the trailer hitch not to fit. I have attached a photo of what the Curt # C13315 should look like. This is how the trailer hitch will look when...

  • When is the Mid-Year Cutoff for a 2016 Mazda CX-5
If your 2016 Mazda CX-5 was made on May, 16th 2016 then you have a 2016.5 mid-year model as the cutoff date for prior mid-year models was April 1st, 2016. However, none of that matters when choosing a trailer hitch for your CX-5 as the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13315 will fit both. I have attached an install video for you as well.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2016.5 Mid Year Model Mazda CX-5
For your 2016.5 mid-year model Mazda CX5 with a 2.5L engine, I recommend the Curt Class III Receiver Hitch # C13315. This hitch is confirmed to fit your vehicle and provides a 2 inch receiver opening with a 600 pound tongue weight capacity and a 4,000 pound towing weight capacity. I recommend also checking the capacity of the vehicle itself as listed in the owner's manual, as this will likely be the limiting factor. I have attached an installation video on your Mazda CX-5 for you to check...

  • Class III Trailer Hitch Availability for 2014 Mazda CX-5
Curt 2-inch Class III hitch # C13315 is a confirmed fit on your 2014 Mazda CX-5. The hitch includes the required hardware for bolt-on installation. When used with non-trailer loads like bike racks you need to support the hitch with a stabilizing strap # 18050 available from Curt in order to maintain your hitch warranty. You can avoid this requirement and still keep the same 525-lb tongue weight capacity by instead using Draw-Tite # 76138.

You will have enough ground clearance in the CX-5 to carry the Thule Doubletrack part # TH990XT without any issues. I have attached an installation video of the hitch for your reference. There is 3" from the hitch pin hole of the Curt Hitch to out past the bumper on the CX-5. The Doubletrack measures...
