Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2008 Lexus RX 330 - Curt

Today on our 2008 Lexus RX 350, we'll be installing the curt class 3 trailer hitch receiver, part number 13530. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see, it's tucked up nicely underneath our bumper cover here. It wraps around our exhaust here, so you don't have to worry about when going over bumps, having to listen to your muffler or your tail pipe rattle around and bang up against the hitch and cause noise. As you can see here, I'm moving it here pretty good and it comes nowhere close to hitting our hitch. Our hitch has our standard class 3 two inch opening here. On the side of it, we have our 5 eighths inch diameter hitch pin hole here to secure your ball mount, your bike rack or your cargo carrier or any other hitch mounted accessory you may have. We have our nice easy to use safety chain loops on a plate welded to the bottom of the receiver here and you can easily fit your large diameter safety chain here without a problem. This hitch has a nice, round tubular construction and it's powder coated in a high gloss black finish, so it will provide us many years of corrosion and rust free service. This hitch has a 3,500 pound max gross trailer weight rating and a 350 pound max ton weight rating. If you we're to step up to a weight distribution system with your trailer, the capacity increases to 4,000 pounds mass gross trailer weight rating and 400 pounds max gross ton weight rating. You will want to consult with the owner's manual of your Lexus RX 350 to see if it's capable of towing that much weight.

You want to go by whichever number is lower. Now, for a couple of measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch mounting accessory you may need, such as a ball mount, bike rack or cargo carrier, you're looking at about 3 inches from the center of the 5 eights inch diameter hitch pin hole to the rear most point on the back bumper and about 15 and a half inches from the ground to the top of the 2 inch class 3 receiver opening. All right. Here is what our hitch comes with. Let's see. We have our hitch here. We have some hardware here, which will replace the bolts that went into our factory tail hooks, plus 1 addition one.

It's all the same bolt. There is 6 canonicle tube washes that go with them. The teeth will face away from the bolt head and go towards the body of the hitch. We'll go ahead and set those up and we'll prep our vehicle for the hitch to be installed right now. Now, on some Lexus models, your vehicle may have a trim panel here. Our particular model here doesn't.

Keep that in mind. You'd have to remove that in order to install the hitch. The same thing on the driver's side. There may or may not be one there. Now, we've got that covered. We'll begin our installation by removing our factory tow hooks right here.

That will take a 14 milometer socket to remove the factory bolts. You put the bolts and the hooks aside. We will not reinstall them. While we're over here, there is two plugs on the driver's side. We'll go ahead and remove these. Also, we will not be re-installing these. We'll repeat the same process on the passenger side. Get our plugs out here and our two bolts. Okay, now that our factor tow hooks are removed, we'll raise our hitch into position with the help of an assistant and install our hardware. Now that we have at least one bolt installed on both sides, we can install the rest of our hardware. With all of our hardware started, we can tighten them down with a 17 milometer socket now. Now, we will tork our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. That completes our installation of the curt class 3 trailer hitch receiver, part number 13530 on our 2008 Lexus RX 350.

I chose the trailer hitch receiver by Curt over Hidden Hitch and Draw-Tite for three reasons. One, the receiver design has a more finished look, especially around the tailpipe. Two, after watching the installation videos for the H.H. and D-T. which both showed some alignment issues with the factory anchor holes. And three is a bonus, it was less expensive. I am very satisfied with the look, very unobtrusive, and installation was a snap. My only criticism is that I wish Curt had the extra hole for using the J-pin design locking hitch pin with the anti-rattle feature...much better than other anti-rattle hitch products. Research and ordering from etrailer.com was a breeze...a very satisfied customer. 28851

The package was easy to unpack and handle. Having reviewed many of the reviews and having watched the video on etrailer.com made the installation easy. I don't have a pit so I had to use 2 buckets (as one review recommended) and the packaging box to go under the car and install the hitch. It was not difficult at all. The problem I ran into was that the last three places to put the screws on, the ones I had to remove the plastic caps off on the car rail, did not have a good thread and I had to go to a friend to help me thread in - after that the screws which came with the hitch went in. The mistake i made was to test only the first holes on both sides of the rack to verify that the provided screws were the right size, and assume that they worked on the other 4 holes, too. Me recommendation is that before installing one should test all 6 holes to ensure the screws go in. The hitch is very sturdy, looks great. Ever since I have it on, a 4 bike Yakima bike rack has been in, we use it frequently and have had no problems. An observation: the paint on the hitch is very good. So far no rust anywhere. I have been checking out cars with non-dealer installed hitches and I have not seen rusty Curt hitch but have seen other brands get rusty. 400635

2007 Toyota Highlander

I purchased the Curt receiver hitch and the wiring package for a 2007 Toyota Highlander with the factory tow package. Bottom line, if you have a full size spare, THIS HITCH WILL NOT FIT. You cannot seat a full size spare with this hitch as it blocks the tire from seating into position. The wiring package received looks correct, but the connectors do not fit together. I have been on the phone with Curt about this, and they are sending a replacement out. I would never have purchased this product at all had I realized it wouldn't allow me to seat the spare tire once installed. Photo attached showing the problem (blocked access by hitch). 429010

Comments
You will still be able to access the spare tire on your 2007 Toyota Highlander after installing Curt Class III Trailer Hitch 13530. If you refer to the linked photo you can see the hitch and tire positions after installation. The spare can be removed for a tire change by simply letting the forward edge first and then maneuvering the tire past the exhaust and the hitch cross tube.

Wanted this hitch for bike rack only - no towing anticipated. Easy to remove existing bolts and discard. New (supplied) bolts effective. Only thing negative is corrugated box got banged up which means the product suffered minor scratching. Entire process took 2 of us 25 minutes. If you are trying to do this by yourself you'll need a jack stand. Shimmying the box for one side is - maybe - effective, but I would not recommend... all in all good product and value. Hitch is pretty heavy... all good. A big + was install video. Helpful 389622

I installed the Curt brand hitch I purchased from etrailer on my 2006 Lexus RX 330. It took about 30 minutes. I've done it several times. The hitch timely arrived and was packed properly and in excellent condition, as always. I removed the hitch from the packaging and used the cardboard packaging as a mat, to lay on while I worked. I removed the existing factory tie-downs from the car; one on each side, two bolts in each of them. I removed a rubber "plug" on each side, too. I used a lubricant in each of the holes where I removed a plug, and tested a bolt in the same holes to make sure the bolt turned in easily. I supported one end of the hitch with wood blocks, then lifted the other side and started a bolt. Then I started a bolt in the side with the wood blocks. I put the remaining bolts into the existing holes and tightened them all, rotating among the bolts and lifting on the hitch. No drilling, only needed sockets and extensions. It all worked well. Thank you etrailer (again) for a great product, great service and a fair price! 670211

Received the CURT hitch from etrailer yesterday and installed it by myself in less than 30 minutes. The most difficult part of the installation was holding the hitch in position to start the bolts. Two people could perform this installation in 15 minutes….very simple. Doing it by myself, I had to place one end on a small step stool and held the other end, aligning the holes and inserting the bolt. The hitch was an exact fit for my Toyota Highlander. The entire process was made very simple by the video and written instructions on-line at etrailer. Very happy with the entire process from ordering to installation. Great service, great heavy duty hitch and a good price at etrailer....will do business with them again!!! 379453

2010 Ford Edge

I chose the Curt brand hitch over the other more familar two brands, because I like how it didn't protrude beyond the bumper, unlike the other two brands. The Curt hitch partially blocks the edge of the spare tire by 1-1/2" to 2" and that's probably why the other two brands stick out beyond the bumper 1-1/2" to 2"+. In some of the other reviews, people mentioned how Curt could have done a better job of packaging. My box with the Curt hitch showed up damaged where the flange bolts up to the frame. This wasn't a big deal, but Curt could do a better job packaging the hitch and it wouldn't take much. E-trailer was great to deal with. I really liked how you could compare different brands of hitches with pictures and install video's. My Son & I installed the hitch in about 10 minutes. Overall, I am satisfied with the Curt hitch. 218031

The hitch arrived nicely packaged and wrapped (to protect the paint) and in perfect shape. It is incredibly sturdy (weighing in at about 60 lbs) and fits my 2005 RX330 exactly. I found that installing it with an (air) impact wrench worked perfectly, especially when taking out the original tow brackets. It took just about 30 minutes to install, start to finish. Piece of cake! I would most definitely recommend getting the Curt hitch. I plan on using it for a Thule bike/ski/snowboard carrier and for an extension platform to carry random "stuff" (i.e. no boat/RV trailing), but I have no doubts whatsoever that it would do the job for those as well. 455044

The hitch is still doing quite well. Even though I wasnt planning on towing anything, Ive since purchased a 6x10 trailer to haul furniture, a motorcycle, etc. and the hitch pulled it with no problems.

Notes: Easy install on my 2007 Highlander Hybrid. You need a 10" extender for your socket set, and 14mm and 17mm sockets to make this go quick. Otherwise your knuckles will suffer. Someone before me had recommended opening the box carefully and using it to support one side while you bolt in the other side in order to make this a one person job. Worked perfectly. Just go ahead and have a can of Rustoleum gloss black ready for touch ups when you receive your hitch (see below). Good: solid construction. fit perfectly. Took me 40 leisurely minutes to get it mounted while I listened to some tunes in the garage. Not so good: the shipping box and packaging are suboptimal. My box was ripped open about 20" at the corner and it had clearly been dropped because the gloss paint was chipped off on the driver side mount. I did a spot treatment of Rustoleum once mounted and called it good. I would suggest corner reinforcement and padding to keep the hitch from moving so much inside the box and getting damaged in transport. 238745

I have not used the product yet, but the install was not as easy as stated. The bolts on the forward part of the hitch had to be pried into place. I think this was due to the metal of the product being sucked in during the welding process, or it was bent sometime before it reached me. We are only using it to put a bike rack on, so maybe overkill for that purpose. Recommend sending longer bolts by an 1/4 inch so the tie down straps could be bolted back on to the frame also. I will have to unbolt to replace the ones that were send with the product. 447650

Product arrived on schedule. Box was a little torn up with product exposed and minor scuffs, but no big deal. Better/stronger package would be good. Bolts and instructions were secured with no issues. Install was a breeze as stated. One person can do it with no major issues. Bolt hole pattern a little off on one of the holes and had to work the bolt to get it snug, but overall a good experience. Now to get my bike rack on and start enjoying the summer. Definitely recommend. 129753

I installed the wiring harness part # C55563 for the 2008 Lexus RX350. I watched the video which was specific to my vehicle and had a good idea of how to proceed. By following each step as it was explained I was able to complete the install in about 4 hours. It took me longer than most people because I had to keep going in the house and looking at the video. I was very happy with the way everything went together and pleased that all parts that I needed were included. It is a little hard working in confined area around the taillight but take your time and don't be afraid to pull back on the trim is needed. It is also good to have a trim tool to pull the push pins and have some extra push pins on hand in case you break one. 369493

Trailer hitch was easy enough to install that I did it myself in about 20 minutes. It would have been easier if I'd had some one to hold up one end while I bolted on the other. I'm 70 years old and holding up one end with one foot to keep it level, while I started the screws on the opposite end was the trickiest part. All the bolt holes, 3 on each end lined up perfectly. Having all the right tools with in reach, probably added another 30 minutes of prep time. Very sturdy looking hitch. Had to go to Tractor Supply to get the receiver, the pin to hold it into the hitch and the balls. 245648

I'm blown away by eTrailer's customer service. Shortly after placing my order I received a voice mail from a customer service representative confirming that the hitch was available and would go out within 24 hours and arrive to me by the end of the week. She asked me to call her extension if I had any questions or concerns at any time. You don't typically get that kind of service when ordering other places online so I really appreciated that follow up. I received the hitch within the week and it arrived in good condition. The box had some damage but that's the purpose of the box, to take some of the abuse of shipping and protect the product inside. The hitch did not need any touch up but I had been anticipating needing to use some Rustoleum black on it based on other reviews so I was happy to find that it didn't need any. I'm not a handy person by any stretch but with the help of 1 other person we were able to get this installed on my 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid within 30 minutes pretty easily. If you are installing it by yourself you might want a milk crate or two to prop the hitch up while you install the bolts on each side. We threaded them in hand tight before following up with an impact wrench to get them in all the way. The hitch fits nicely, comes right about to the edge of the bumper, and sits up pretty high off the ground which is exactly what I was wanting. What I used: -Impact wrench with extension -14mm socket to remove existing frame bolts -17mm socket to install provided bolts 368369

Provided instructions excellent, as well as fit and finish. 3 bolts on each side, with rear two being used for tie-downs. Only issue was the 3rd (forward) hole on one side, despite having a rubber plug, was rusted and the bolt wouldn't thread. This car spent years in Chicago and Buffalo, so lots of salt. I ran a M10x1.25 tap through the hole to clear the rust and all was good. Hitch extends ~1/2"out from bumper so not a danger to shins. 736639

  • Best Hitch for 2007 Lexus RX 350
The three hitch options for your 2007 Lexus RX 350 - etrailer # e98857, Curt # 13530 and Draw-Tite # 75153 - all share identical capacities and will install in the same way. All include the mounting hardware. From these choices my preference is the etrailer model # E98857 you referenced. I like this one because it is USA-made and has a subtle matte finish powder coat rather than a high gloss finish, so it will not distract as much from the car's own appearance. To complete your towing system, you'll also need a few other items: Trailer wiring harness, part # 118478 Ball mount/trailer ball kit, part # 989900 My research indicates that the RX330 has a maximum 3500lb towing capacity, so the trailer and its cargo aren't pushing the capacity. If you'll be towing a weight like this...

  • Will Removing Tie Down Brackets from 2005 Toyota Highlander to Install Trailer Hitch Weaken Vehicle

They are not a load-bearing part of the vehicle and removing them will not compromise the vehicle at all. All vehicles have some sort of tie down and for the most part they are used to secure the vehicle to the transport carrier that takes them from the factory to the dealerships. If for some reason the vehicle needed to be pulled from behind, you...

You have a few options for a bike rack for your 2008 Lexus RX350. You could go with a hitch mounted bike rack, a trunk bike rack, or a roof bike rack. • Hitch and Wiring Installation on 2007 Lexus RX350 With Factory Towing Prep Package

You can check under your rear bumper for any signs of wiring for a trailer connector and test them using a circuit tester like # 40376, or you...
