2000 Subaru Forester - Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles - 7-Wire to 6-Wire Straight Cord

  • Diode Kit
  • Splices into Vehicle Wiring
  • Tail Light Mount
  • Universal
  • Roadmaster

This complete kit includes everything you need to connect your RV's tail, brake, and turn signal lights to your towed car. Diodes prevent feedback and wire your car to operate as a combined system. Includes a 7-way to 6-way straight adapter cord.

Features:

  • Complete wiring kit lets you connect your RV's tail, brake, and turn signal lights to your towed vehicle's lighting system
    • Wires towed car as a combined lighting system so that brake and turn signals travel along same wire
  • Diodes prevent electrical feedback and the damage it can cause to your car's electrical components
  • 7-Wire to 6-wire adapter cord allows you to run power from your RV to your towed vehicle
    • Straight cord is ideal for all-terrain tow bars and other tow bars that have channel guides
  • 6-Way socket wires to harness and mounts on towed car with included bracket
  • Sturdy, durable construction
    • Powder-coated aluminum casings protect diodes from corrosion
    • Electrical cord resists water, oil and chemicals
    • Silicone-injected plugs prevent corrosion
  • Kit includes:
    • 4 Hy-Power diodes
    • Wiring harness
    • 7-Way to 6-way adapter cord
    • 6-Way socket with mounting bracket
    • Wire connectors
    • Cable ties
    • 1 Ring terminal
    • 3' Long plastic loom
  • Brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if used with supplemental braking system
  • Limited Lifetime Warranty

Specs:

  • Maximum amperage: 85 amps
  • Maximum voltage: 24 volts
  • Adapter cord length: 6-1/2'
    • Wire gauge: 16
  • Wiring harness length: 30'

Note: For applications that have separate lighting, this kit will cause your brake lights to function as both brake and turn signal lights. A wiring converter (118158 - sold separately) and 2 additional diodes will be needed if you want to retain separate turn and brake signals.

Separate vs. Combined Lighting Systems

Some automobiles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals travel along different wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) This is referred to as a "separate lighting system". When you hook up for flat towing using this kit, your towed car's lighting system will operate in a combined fashion regardless of whether it typically has combined or separate lighting. This means that the brake and turn signals sent by your RV to your towed car will be carried on a single wire. As a result, your car's brake lights will do the flashing for the turn signals. Your vehicle will still function as designed when not hooked up to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because this kit wires your vehicle as a combined system, a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

The install on my Ford Maverick is clean and functional, so this is more of a customer service review... excellent customer service!

During the 4-day towing set-up install, the forecast was for freezing temps and my rig was not winterized. I called in mid panic and the motorhome was moved indoors.

A few months after using the tow set-up, a minor problem developed. I called and the CSR apologized and said, I can see how that might be frustrating, and a replacement cable (slightly longer) was sent free of charge.

by:

I also purchased brackets and receivers for the tow bar. Both were as advertised and are functioning very well. The staff were also very knowledgeable and helpful. Hard to find service of this kind in today’s world.

by:

The installation ins ructions and video were very helpful. The wiring kit worked perfectly.

by:

Great kit. Easy to install. Connectors seem solid and wires are good.

by:

The installation took some time and the instructions need to be clarified.

by:
Roadmaster

The Roadmaster 4 diode wiring kit has worked great for a full towing season.
Easy installation, great instructions, and added safety while towing.
The wiring kit easily integrated into the other braking and towing system components.
Thanks e-trailer!

by:

This kit worked great. It was easy to install (etrailer offers installation videos if needed). I like this much better than a temporary set of lights on the towed vehicle. The cord and plug are also good quality.

by:
2013 SubaruForester

Works as expected. Connection feels solid enough. Have not had the opportunity to take it on a long trip yet.

One thing bit us in the butt, forcing us to cancel a trip at the last minute (when testing that our towed vehicle's turn signals, brake lights and supplemental brake system was working before driving off!): the left-turn signal prong in the male part of the connector (that plugs into the towed vehicle) was not opened enough, so no steady connection was being made because there was no contact between the prong and the walls of the female part. This had worked in a previous test. Picture included. Make sure to use a flathead screwdriver to open each prong up so full contact is made!

by:

Easy install. Good directions. Works as described.

by:

Easy instructions and works great!!!

by:

I have not been disappointed with anything I have ordered from you.
This wiring kit should do the trick for my flat towing project.
I am sorry that I couldn’t get all of the pieces from you, the transmission pump and base plate was ordered from another company.
This is my fourth camper you are helping me keep maintained and improved.

2000 Cougar 5th wheel bunkhouse,2016 Sprinter 5th wheel front living room , 2021 Nexus 31t class C and a 2016 sprinter tow behind.

by:

I chose the order by phone option. The website is well organized, but, I had gone too long without hearing another person. I have received several orders from etrailer after purchasing an RV last summer. I knew we would be Purchasing a Toad.
I don’t have any experience with towing another vehicle, so I had plenty of help in finding the right equipment for me.
The delivery times were all easily tracked and arrived in good condition. As md on time.
I had the simple tools required to install the base plate and hitch. The videos available on their site are clear and easy to understand.
I have had a great overall experience with etrailer.

2019 GMC Acadia

Very straight forward install, easy to follow instructions. If you do this your self be prepared, the factory light wiring isn't very long or thick it was difficult to strip the wire back far enough to double it over to get a good connection. Upon completion of the wiring, I double checked all power at both plugs, it was all good, I installed the lights, brake and turnsignals worked great, I didn't have any running lights. About 3 min later they came on and stayed on. I don't believe this has any thing to do with the kit, this vehicle has all kinds of light sensors, darkness sensors, rain sensors.. etc. I believe it just too a min or 2 for the lights to actually come on.

no issues after 10K miles super happy with this product

by:

See my review on the Base Plate. The electric was a little wonky but my mechanic met with the manufacturer and was able to figure it out. That said, once it was resolved, it has worked flawlessly.

by:

Easy to install. Would prefer a different method for securing the diodes. I used zip ties of good quality from Ty-Rap instead of the box store cheap imitations.

I had a Toyota Tacoma that has separate blinker lights. Took a mechanic that was knowledgeable in electrical wiring. Followed the instructions and it worked perfect. Used it several times since

Great. Been on several trips. No problem

by:

All running and signal lights work great. But no license plate light illumination.

5/23/2023

You are correct in that the tow bar wiring harness part # RM-152-98146-7 will not illuminate the license plate light as the diodes are meant to keep the signals from backfeeding into your vehicle wiring. We have checked into this and having the license plate light is not mandatory when flat towing.

by:
2020 Jeep Wrangler

Very straightforward. I followed along to one of the videos on etrailer's site and it went very easy for me thank you etrailer!

by:

Works great.

by:

Wiring was about 8 feet short to complete the task.

by:
2003 Jeep TJ

1 star is simply for the fact that the straight cord is too short. Bought to use with a road master tow bar. Since I needed a drop hitch to line the tow bat up with the toad I needed about a foot more cable. Tried to make do with the one supplied. I ended up having to spend an hour in the parking lot of an rv store wiring up a new one on my first trip. You would think for [local stores] you have to pay for this they could spring for a little extra wite.

That is unfortunate that there was not enough wire for your application. We do carry 16 gauge bonded 4 wire, part # 16-4B-1, by the foot. You can always contact our customer service department for them to assist you in getting this wire ordered.

by:
Honda

Kit worked well. On 2012 Honda CRV I was able to run the wire to the rear under interior panels then install diodes inside each quarter panels eliminating any wiring or component connections exposed to the weather.

by:

It was the installation that was a issue, it works great now that I finally got it installed correctly. Had to go through 3 companies before it worked. It cost me 3 times as much, I went to a recommended installer from your site, and they hook it up but didn’t used the diodes that were provided. I took it back, and asked them to install the diodes.(the company “Fatal LLC”) charged me [XX] I kept getting feedback when the emergency lights were used, they say it’s normal for that to do that. I didn’t believe it, so I-took it to camping world, they rewired it and used a different diode don’t asked me why, but it-still didn’t work they said it would eventually work itself out, It didn’t, so I had still have the problem with the feedback when using the emergency flashers. I guess I’ll live with it. It works I guess….

2023 Jeep Wrangler

Have not installed yet (DUO Brake system and wiring) from what I have seen I am impressed with all parts delivered.
tow bar Plate is more than substantial and the Tow bar is amazing.

by:

I ordered base plates and the wire harness, the wire harness would not allow for brake, running, and turn signal lights, I had to omit one, the turn signals. The base plates where difficult, requires removing the front of the car. the video did not state the distance front to rear, I was a half inch to far forward and the fog light would not fit.

You mentioned that the harness would not allow for the brake, running and turn signal lights. For vehicles that have separate turn and brake lights, this kit will cause your brake lights to function as both brake and turn signal lights. This is perfectly fine. If you want to have both separate turn and brake signals, then you will need part # 118158 and part # RM-792 to do so.

The only difference between the (now discontinued) Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate 1419-5 and (now discontinued) Direct-Connect Base Plate 1419-6 for your 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee is that the crossbar style requires a separate piece to attach the tow bar, the Crossbar Assembly for Roadmaster Motorhome Mounted Tow Bars # 910021-00.
