Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Making connections behind and in front of the wheel

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then use the lever to keep the extra cable from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Ok for light duty use. Definitely not off road( and they don’t claim off road either). The locking device would be suspect. I haven’t tried them on ice yet but I’ll try and update when I do.
The inner retainer seems to be decent. It pulled stuff in tight and might fare better than plastics in extreme cold.

We used these on a wharehouse forklift daily and they made it one winter season. Each one lost 1-2 crosslinks. All in all they did their job all things considered.

I couldn't get my motor home back from repair because of deep snow so looked around for chains and settled on these cable chains. If it wasn't for the -25 wind chill making my fingers numb installing would have been easy. The only problem was one lever lock wouldn't stay closed. I can cure that but hope to never use them again. Great product!

Thank you for getting involved, yes just what I was expecting

Ford F-150

My less then stellar rating is based more on my experience in ordering then with the chains themselves. I've had great interaction in the past with etrailer but this time, not so much. Called in an order for chains for my F150. The tech helped me pick out a pair based on my specific truck specs and tire size. After receiving, found that ford specifies S style traction device so excludes chains and meant re-ordering this cables. Called etrailer and new tech saw that was the case immediately. I had to purchase a new set of chains laying out more $. They did cover my return shipping and will reimburse my original $ but, because of lost time and schedule, I needed expedited shipping which they also charged me for. I feel it would have been more appropriate for them to pay the upgraded shipping and to offer an exchange credit on chains for cables once they verified I had shipped especially as how I've been an active customer for years. This purchase aside, my history with them has been fantastic.

by:

I am giving this product one star short of "excellent" only because they have not ever been used since purchased - and I hope it stays that way. I do think it's a solid product as I have practiced putting these chains on my SUV just in case I will need them and reasonably priced. Thanks!

by:

These chains appear to be what I need, I will be traveling from the deep south to the Tetons in February and just might have a need for chains on a very seldom basis. These chains appear to be much easier to put on and take off, and the price is very good.

I do want to commend etrailer.com customer service (Bridget A). I called to try to correct an error I made on my online order and she was excellent in correcting my problem - - thank you Bridget.

I still have the chains in the bag, but they have never been on my tires. I was really glad to not have to use them, but have them ready for the next trip to the snow for just in case.

by:
2014 Ford Expedition

While not as aggressive as all-link chains I found this design to provide good traction in snow and moderate icing conditions. Chains are light weight, easy to mount, and store in compact container when not in use. Design provides extra measure of protection for brake, suspension, and body components where clearances are reduced by tire/wheel size or custom modifications.

There isn't a lot of excitement when it comes to tire chains and adjusters unless it is when you need them and you don't have them, or you have them and they don't fit, or you have them and they don't work. With etrailer I managed to miss ALL the excitement! As always I received excellent sales and shipping service to get me the correct chains and adjusters in time for an unscheduled trip, they fit to a "T", and provided excellent traction with no sidewall wear or impact with body or brake components. I always marvel at finding the best service for truck and trailer equipment half way across the country rather than in my own backyard.

by:

Do like the snow cables but was a little disappointed that after reviewing your video on installation that you recommended the tensioner. So...I then had to order and had to pay a shipping charge!

Have not actually used the tire chains yet, but they look like good quality. They appear to be just what I wanted and expected. Etrailer shipped them quicker than I expected.

I purchased the chains because I travel into snow country once or twice a year. Drivers are required to carry chains, even if your vehicle is 4 wheel drive, here in Calif. I have carried them now but have not had to use them, thanks to 4 wheel drive.

Seem to be good quality tire chains, hope I got the right size haven’t gotten the opportunity to try them yet

Still have not had an opportunity to use them they were purchased to use on a trip to Colorado in the winter. Fortunately we didn’t have to use them.

Buick Enclave

I went to my local tire person in Turlock and they said the only thing that would work on my Buick Enclave was a traction device that required my lug nuts to be removed to put it on. I just needed some type of chain/cable in case Inter-State 5 had snow on for a planned trip in a couple of weeks.

I searched the internet and this company showed up. I read some of the reviews and decided to give them a call. The person I talked to knew about tire traction devices and told me a small cable will work on my car and still be legal in the State of California. I gave them my credit card and my cables showed up on the date promised. I will use them again should I need cables/chains in the future.

by:

Never had to use it. Bought this because it was long term predicted to snow during the time frame of a 2019 winter trip to Las Vegas. However the worst we encountered was a very light dusting with nothing accumulating on the highway. The product is stored in my Suburban, next to the jack, just in case.

by:

I received my snow chains/cables very quickly, in time for our latest round of bad weather. I test fitted them and they seem a little loose but my tires on have about 1/4 of the tread left. If the tires were new or newer, they would fit better. I tried to put them back in the storage bag they came in and it ripped apart at the seams. So while I think the chains are good quality I can not give them highest marks based on the bag. Customer service gets an A+

by:

Great price for peace of mind for upcoming ski trip. Have not used in the bad weather yet but when we practiced putting them on it was very easy to install the chains. Watching the product installation video on etrailer's website made the installation easier, compared to just reading the written instructions. They come in a nice carry case and the cable chains don't seem as bulky as traditional chains. Will have to see how they work, though. Shipping was extremely quick with etrailer.

2017 Ford F-150

Worked great for my 2017 Ford F 150 STX with rear wheel drive. We stayed near the west entrance of Yosemite. It snowed about 18 inches of snow the day we arrived and the cables did amazing on highway 41 and throughout Yosemite Valley. Road conditions were pretty bad but I felt really safe driving with these cables. Really good quality chains! Shipping was delayed a day but I ordered them only 7 days before Christmas.

by:
2018 GMC Yukon

Used these for our 2015 Yukon with 20 in wheels on a 2018 ski trip.

Were great in the snow. Easy to put on, although it took a few times to get good at it.

Unfortunately I used them on our way down and then drove 7 hours home and left in the garbage bag overnight. After pulling them out, they had completely rusted because of the humidity (ocean air). So I get to buy another set.

by:
2008 Ford Expedition

These chains are terrible. Both snapped in less than 20 miles of driving I n roads covered in 6"+ of unplowed fresh snow. What a joke. My father owned one set of tire chains his ENTIRE LIFE!

by:
2013 GMC Sierra

Outstanding product and customer service!!! And I highly recommend contacting etrailer before going to your local auto parts store or dealer. They gave me a better price and great professional advice. Unlike most retailers, the sales reps at etrailer kept me informed during every step of the ordering and shipping process. I was especially surprised at how fast I received the snow chains--only 3 business days and the shipping was free. More importantly, the chains were a perfect fit to my truck model and tire size.

Delivered quickly. Have not used, hopefully never will but CA requires you to carry chains in the snow area.

2003 GMC Yukon

I used these last year on my Yukon. We went out into the Ochoco Mountains to cut a Christmas tree. We got into ice on 6" of snow. Pulled these chains out and 20min later we were heading our way home. Don't leave home without them. My only complaint is that the instructions need to be laminated or on waterproof paper. The instructions just desentagrated when it got wet.

by:

Product arrived right on time and in perfect condition. The cables are easy to install if you've used cables or chains before, but I hope you don't have to rely on the pictures in the installations instructions because they are just blurry enough to be of no help at all. The cables fit my 275/65/R18 Michelin LTX A/T2 tires pretty well, but if you have tires any bigger than that you will need to purchase a larger size snow cable or chain. A handy cloth carrying case is included, but it's a little tough getting the cables back inside when you're finished using them, so be sure to keep the twist ties that come with the cables to make storage a little bit easier.

by:
2013 Ford F-150

I haven't used my chains in snow yet, but I installed them on the tires of my F-150 and they fit perfectly. I also found them to be very easy to install. When I go for a ski trip this winter, it will be great to know that I don't have to be overly worried about the weather. I'll also comment that the chains came in a handy carrying case that will easily fit under the seat. Exactly what I was needing.

by:
2012 Toyota Tacoma

Glacier chains for my 2012 Tacoma went on easy. I haven't had the chance to actually use them in the snow yet, so I can't comment on their effectiveness or durability. My only complaint concerns the bag used to store them. It's way too small. I struggled to get them out of the bag the first time. It was almost as if the bag was constructed around the chains. Needless to say there was no way I was going to get them back in the bag. I store them in an old gym bag. As far as etrailer.com goes, 5 stars all the way. They want to make sure you are properly serviced.

I have not used the tire chains yet but was grateful for the prompt recommendation for tire chains and chain tensioners for my vehicle. The order arrived on time in just a few days and is now waiting for use!

  • Tire Chain Comparison for 2015 Nissan Xterra with 265/75-16 Tires
You are smart to check your owner's manual because many passenger vehicles require low-profile Class S tire chains to avoid clearance issues within the wheel wells. If the auto maker says to use only Class S chains, then that's the final word. Nissan may also state that chains are only to be on one axle, so be sure to observe all of their guidance. For your 265/75-16 tire size we do offer a range of Class S chains that you can see on the link provided. These include the cost-effective...

  • Will Snow Tire Chains for 265/65-16 Tires Work on 265/75-16 Tires
I do have some tire chain options for your 265/75-16 tires but every tire chain is different, some will fit a wide variety of sizes and others will only fit a few. If you already have snow tire chains, you'll need to look on the packaging or check with the manufacturer to verify fit on your exact size. I can't make a blanket statement that all tire chains that fit 265/65-16 tires will also fit 265/75-16 tires as some will and some will not because it comes down to the exact model of tire...

We additionally recommend # PW103 rubber adjuster that will help keep the chains centered and taunt. The price can be found on the product page.

  • Will the Same Cable Tire Chains Fit 275/55-20 and 255/75-17 Tires
The 2 tire sizes are roughly the same diameter but there is a bit more to it than just that. The comparable chains that fit the 255/75-17 tires have a shorter side chain. Otherwise they are nearly identical. So you could potentially use # PW2028C if you want but you might not be able to get them tight enough. For the best fit I recommend # PW3027C.
