  • Quantity: 2 chains
  • Internal clearance required: none
  • 5-Year warranty

Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

If you're looking for a way to get traction in the snow without scratching your rims, these K-Summit chains are your best option. The chain only sits on the tire tread and is fastened to one of the lug nuts on your wheel with an easy-to-use fixing key. There are no attachments behind the wheel like typical tire chains, which ensures that there is no interference with any suspension or braking components on the inside of the wheel well. You won't have to stop and readjust these chains either - they self-tension, self-center, and conform to the tire perfectly as you drive, providing a precise fit even on worn tires. These chains are ideal for use in light snow and ice.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you wont be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Because these chains are customizable, the first fitting could take a little time but after that, it's simple. The included instructions will let you know if you need to adjust the chains based on your tire size.

Remove lug cover if present

1. To begin installation, you'll need access to your wheel's lug nuts. If you have a plate covering your lug nuts, pop it off using either the included Allen key or a flathead screwdriver.

Determine size of lug nuts

2. Determine which lug nut adapter you'll need to fit over the nut on your wheel. Attach that adapter to the included fixing key. The most commonly used adapters are included.

Lay chains over tire thread

3. Fit the chain over your wheel, getting it as far onto the tire as possible.

Tighten lug nut adapter

4. Using the fixing key, thread the included bolt into the adapter. The other end of the fixing key will attach to the K-Summit base, which includes the ratcheting mechanism that tensions the chains as you drive.

The adapter secures over your lug nut to hold the K-Summit base in place on your wheel. You might need to use the included spacer to get the chains to sit properly.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Stay the away from this dangerous, poorly designed, incredibly overpriced, disaster waiting to happen, product.
After following etrailers tire size calculator I ordered the K Summit chains for my Mercedes AMGGLC 43. I live full-time in a Mountain Community at 6000 feet and I’ve had many vehicles and experiences with tire chains and cables. I ordered these chains because of their supposed efficacy with high-performance vehicles with low profile tires, etc. Despite adequate practice pre-storm, by myself and both my sons who are in their 20’s, these over priced dangerous pieces of garbage failed on December 20, 2020 during a blizzard in our community while trying to get my sons to the airport. The right sided chain disappeared after less than 2 miles of driving and we were left stranded in a ditch on the wrong side of the road for days before our vehicle could be towed out due to the high demand in the area. I have been driving in snow conditions since I was a teenager, I am now 65. I have driven in worse conditions with 2 Wheel vehicles with regular chains and rarely failed to get home or around when I needed to. My Mercedes AMG has traction control, all wheel drive, slippery mode, and can be raised to avoid obstacles. Nonetheless, in this unusual freak blizzard, when I needed a chain product the most, these failed me and my family miserably. Their customer support consisted of a never ending chain of transfers from one person or department to another, and to this day I’ve never received a refund or gotten satisfaction. If I could’ve burned the remaining K summit chain I would’ve, but I had to settle for the pleasure of throwing the remaining one away in the expensive case it came in. Do yourself and anyone else you know who is shopping for chains a favor and warm them away from this failure prone overpriced piece of junk. RRT.

I have reached out to the manufacturer and determined that these chains would be a fit for the tire size. When installing the chains you will want to make sure that you are attaching the lug nut adapter that matches the wheel bot size. etrailer.coms custom fitguide will indicate whether your vehicle requires an adapter that is sold separately. And that you are using the cage, spacer and adapter correctly.

Very unique design. Do set them up and put them on before you really need them. The screws that adjust the size do take some time to remove. Unlike others, I had few to no issues getting them off. They fit snuggly on my tires. They were a little hard to get off after releasing the tension, but I guess that is good too. I will have to wait until I need them to put them to the ultimate test.

This isnt directed towards etrailer, they have been nothing but amazing. overall these chains are really expensive for snow chains that will only be used a couple of times a year. The instruction manual is horrible, directions are very broad and not specific at all which was beyond frustrating. Thankfully I fitted and tested the chains at home before I went up to the snow, one chain fell off during the first test but then I put it back on and it stayed on. I haven't been to the snow with them yet, so wish me luck!

This review relates to the product, not etrailer, as they have been a good retailer. The Konig self tensioning tire chains are a horrible product. They are poorly engineered. The instructions are average, but not detailed to the level of complication associated with the product. Installation is a two person job, and make sure you have that extra person around for a few days because they are very likely to fly off during driving. After coming off the fifth time, having been professionally installed, I pulled over and took the other off and left them for the next person to try. This is the worst winter traction device ever designed and built. I bought these due to wheel size given low profile tires and wide rims - I think I will just get some winter rims and tires and run those for four months with some simple and far less expensive (and more reliable) cable chains. I would avoid this product - etrailer has many better options for you.

Bought the chains for a stay in Truckee. We never got hit with snow that required chains but I put them on as a test before the trip and they went on easily. Don't know how they work over an extended period but they seem good and etrailer.com was great in helping me get the chains adjusted properly as the directions could use a few more words to go with the pictures.

These are great chains, however, we do highly recommend following the instructions to a T. These require adapters for the lug nuts and a lot of adjusting in order to get them installed tightly. I have sent your information over to our customer service department for them to assist you.

by:

I did need to adjust the "chains" for my tire size. It was easy to do with the supplied tools. They are indeed easy to put on and take off. The tension mechanism works great for keeping them on. The first time you put them on, you might wonder if you've done it correctly? Of course, you should practice once before you leave home. They are not "chains"; they don't rattle!

by:

I appreciate the follow up to ask about my experience and to be honest I'm a little disappointed.

I only needed the chains for a short drive (about 2 miles at most) last year and they worked as advertised. That's great.

However- this year I needed them for a similarly short period - only a few miles - and one fell off whilst I was on the highway. I didn't notice at first but a passing motorist flagged me down.

I had to walk over a mile on a dangerous stretch of highway, in the snow and ice to retrieve it.

I had read reviews of others who had lost their chains whilst driving, chalking it up to user error, but now I know different!!

by:

Worked fine going up a mountain a couple of miles to our cabin. Over an icy trail. Unfortunately the next day going down, after we got to the bottom, discovered they both had come off! And were lost somewhere back up the mountain. Of course we could not go back to find them because we had no chains!

I haven't used them yet but did put them on and it was easy. They look tough and I am glad I purchased them. I occasionally travel in the mountains and have them for the worst case scenario like I was in a few years ago with an AWD. I now have a two wheel drive I feel much more confident.

by:

Very well designed. Easy to mount. I have not had an opportunity to use them yet but I have set them up to fit my tire size and put them on. I am pleased with the quality so far.

So far so good. I’m waiting for snow before I give 5 stars.
It’s recommended you fit the chains before you actually need them to get familiar with the innovative design. I had to remove all 5 yellow bolts since my wheels are larger. Keep the extra hardware but you won’t need them unless you change cars.
Once fitted you’re good to go.
Wear gloves to mount them in about 5 minutes.

If you have 245/65-17 tires, I recommend the Titan Chain Alloy Snow Tire Chains - Diamond Pattern - Square Link - 1 Pair # TC2317. If you have 255/45-20 tires, I recommend the Konig Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains - Diamond Pattern...

  • Recommended Tire Chains for 2013 Lincoln MKT
In an AWD vehicle, you may use one or two sets of chains. Since the owner's manual doesn't specify which axle the chains should be on if you're going with one set only, I'd recommend putting them on the front wheels because you'll want your steering axle to have the best traction possible. For some vehicles, turning off the traction control when using chains might be necessary, see the owner's manual for details. Since your owner's manual specifically mentions that chains should not be...

  • Recommended Tire Chains for 2016 Honda CR-V with 265/60R18 Sized Tires
Like you said the tire size P225/80R18 on your 2016 Honda CR-V makes sense. In addition some tires have a load rating and a speed rating. That's the 99H. The 99 is an identifying code that means your tires can have a maximum of 1,709 pounds per tire. This doesn't mean your car can necessarily be 6,836 pounds(1,709 x 4) but if it could, the tires could handle it. The H is the speed rating which indicates the tires are rated for up to 130 mph. Now to the part that actually answers your...

  • Recommended Tire Chains for a 2020 Tesla S with 265/35-21 Tires
Yes, the Konig Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains part # TH02230K66 are what I recommend for a 2020 Tesla S with 265/35-21 tires. These chains are unique in that they only sit on the top of the tire so there will be no issues with clearance and they are super easy to install when compared to most other options. These are actually the only chain type traction devices we have for this tire size.

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for a 2015 Audi Q5 With Limited Clearance
I have a tire chain solution for the limited clearance your having with your tire and Audi Q5. I recommend the Thule K-Summit Snow Chains # TH02230K66, because this chain sits on only the tire treads, leaving alloy wheels and the inside of the tire wall untouched. The K-Summit Chains would be the best option to reduce the potential for damage on the vehicle. I was unable to confirm but your owners manual will tell you if you will need chains on both sets of tires or just one. Ideally,...

  • Recommended Class S Snow Chains for 2019 Toyota RAV4
Class S snow chains are the chains that offer the lowest profile and are designed for vehicles that don't have a great deal of clearance at the top and inside of the wheel well- so they're perfect for your 2019 Toyota RAV4 and the profile of your tire in the wheel well. Your vehicle manual likely makes the recommendation not to use snow chains because of the lack of clearance with your tires and the potential damage that could be caused to the wheel well components if you were to use a...

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for 2016 Kia Sorento LX FWD with Tire Size 235/65R17
The Titan Chains part # TC2319 that you mentioned are a fit for your tire size of 235/65-17 and are Class S compatible which means they are compatible with vehicles that require chains with less than 12 mm of thickness. It's much more expensive, but the Konig K-Summits part # TH02230K66 are the best option. These require no clearance at all due to how they install, are easy to install, and will last much longer than the Titans. This would be basically the best option you'll find.
