Question:
Hi, I have a 2019 RAV4 Adventure model with stock 235/55 19 tires. In California, there is a requirement to sometimes carry snow chains in the Sierras. The manual recommends not using snow chains but I was talking to someone who said that a Class S clearance should be fine. What chains are best for tight clearance. What would you recommend?

Class S snow chains are the chains that offer the lowest profile and are designed for vehicles that don't have a great deal of clearance at the top and inside of the wheel well- so they're perfect for your 2019 Toyota RAV4 and the profile of your tire in the wheel well. Your vehicle manual likely makes the recommendation not to use snow chains because of the lack of clearance with your tires and the potential damage that could be caused to the wheel well components if you were to use a larger link chain and there was a malfunction-however as you've noticed, there are situations where they're required by law.
I recommend going with the Konig K-Summit XXL K66 Chains # TH02230K66 because not only are they designed precisely for vehicles with clearance issues, they're extremely easy to use and are high quality. These chains are self centering and self tensioning to allow for one of the fastest and easiest installations of any tire chains on the market. Since these chains clamp on to the tire and don't wrap over the inside edge, you won't have any clearance issues on your RAV4. On top of the ease of installation, these chains will provide you with a high quality snow chain that are backed up by a 5 year warranty.
If you're not someone that really plans on being in the mountains all that often and these chains may never get use, you may want to go with a more economical tire chain like the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains # PW1046 . These are also Class S chains that will offer a low profile clearance option for your RAV4 that are perfect for occasional use. These Glacier chains are drive-on and connect, so they aren't nearly as easy to use as the Konig chains and they will likely require some adjustments once they're connected.
