Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Making connections behind and in front of the wheel

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then use the lever to keep the extra cable from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

  • Tire Cable Chains for a 2017 Honda CR-V EX with 235/60-18 Tires
The Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains part # PW2029C are a fit for your 2017 Honda CR-V EX with 235/60-18 tires and will work well for you. They are also class s compliant so the limited wheel wheel clearance should not be an issue. The Security Chain Tire Cable Set TC2212MM that you owner's manual recommends is not class s compliant according to the manufacturer, Peerless Chain Company. I think you will be just fine using the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains part # PW2029C as they provide...

  • Need Tire Chain Rated 10mm or Less for 2015 Ford Explorer
I recommend taking a look at the Titan Chain Tire Chains, # TC2319, for your 2015 Ford Explorer. These square-link, diamond-pattern tire chains provide excellent traction in snow and ice and fit your 245/60R18 size tires. I went to our warehouse to take a measurement of these chains and found that they are 7.08 mm which would meet the 10 mm or less restriction listed in your owner's manual.

  • Recommended Tire Chains/Cables for 2020 Honda CRV AWD with Tire Size 235/60R18
Snow chains are heavier and can sometimes be difficult to install, their primary advantage over cables is their durability followed by an advantage in deeper snow and ice. An example of this being the Konig Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains - XG12 Pro - Size 247, part # TH01594247. These have a max speed rating of 30 mph and are of the self-tensioning design. This option is my recommendation. Snow cables are lighter weight, typically easier to install although may of the new designs...

  • Recommended Snow Tire Chains for my 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
I am unable to access the 2021 Toyota Highlander owner's manual but I have found the same information you are finding in regard to them only allowing the use of them on the front drive wheels. For the 235/55-20 tire size part # TH2004705255 and for the 235/65-18 tire size part # TH2004705255 are excellent chains that will provide really good traction when you need it. Have a look at the ISSE Hybrid Snow Socks - Size 72 # TCH72, which are a Class S compatible and designed with vehicles that have limited wheel well clearance in mind. • Why Does Ford Exclude Tire Chains for 275/65-18 Tires on a 2016 Ford F-150
When a vehicle manufacturer states that chains cannot be used it is generally because there is a potential clearance issue between the inner sidewalls and vehicle components. However, in some places chains or cables are required by law. Since a vehicle manufacturer or dealer cannot tell you to break the law you would have to use a traction device of some kind. Cables such as # PW2028C which fit your 275/65-18 tires usually require the least clearance. For them I also recommend using rubber...
