Why Does Ford Exclude Tire Chains for 275/65-18 Tires on a 2016 Ford F-150

Question:

Hello, Ive seen many comments regarding the use of snow cables/chains on certain F150 4WD vehicles. My question involves a 2016 F150 4WD with 275/65 R18 tires. The Ford Owners Guide only authorizes the use of chain/cable devices on tires the 275/65 R18s are NOT listed. So, what does one buy? Or, am I simply out of luck when it comes to driving on snow/ice covered roads. Why would Ford exclude these tires? A clearance issue? My rear wheels appear to have plenty of room to accept snow cables, not sure about chains. Thanks.

When a vehicle manufacturer states that chains cannot be used it is generally because there is a potential clearance issue between the inner sidewalls and vehicle components. However, in some places chains or cables are required by law. Since a vehicle manufacturer or dealer cannot tell you to break the law you would have to use a traction device of some kind.

Cables such as # PW2028C which fit your 275/65-18 tires usually require the least clearance. For them I also recommend using rubber adjusters # PW105 to keep the cables tight and centered.
