Multipurpose Trailer Hauls Different Types of Boats

The adjustable design of this trailer lets you tow almost any type of small boat. You can lay the trailer's bunk boards either side to side or front to back, depending on the watercraft you want to carry. And with 12" diameter wheels and an 86" long trailer tongue, this trailer can support boats up to 14' long and up to 800 lbs.

CE48870 side to side

Install the bunk boards so that they are positioned across the trailer's frame to tow your kayak or surfboard. The bunks provide enough cargo space to tow 2 kayaks at once.

CE48870 front to back

Set the trailer's bunks front to back to hold your jon boat, pontoon boat, or inflatable. You can also adjust the tilt of the bunks to contour to your boat's hull when towing a canoe or dinghy.

CE48870 adjustable brackets

This trailer comes with bolster brackets of 2 different heights, so you can choose the brackets that work for your type of boat. Then adjust the swivel brackets to tilt the bunk boards so that they cradle your boat's hull. Finally, the winch stand can be unbolted and moved along the trailer tongue to fit the length of your boat.

Hand Crank Winch

CE48870 winch and stop

If you're towing a jon boat or pontoon, you can use the included hand-crank winch to ease loading and unloading. After installing the included winch stand on the trailer's tongue, mount the winch to the stand. A bow roller bracket, complete with rubber roller, is also included to keep your boat from hitting the winch stand.

Plug-and-Play Trailer Wiring

CE48870 main harness to 4-way

The wiring for this trailer has a simple plug-and-play design, so it doesn't require any cutting or splicing to install. As you assemble the trailer, route the main wiring harness through the trailer tongue and down towards the body of the trailer. Then plug the 4-wire end of the tail light harness into the main harness.

CE48870 4-way plug

Run the wires of the tail light harness along the sides of the trailer frame and plug the individual wires into the matching wires on the side marker lights and the tail lights. The wires are color-coded so that you can easily match them up - no circuit tester is required. Once all of the wires are plugged in, use the included clips to secure the harness to the frame.

CE48870 4-way plug

When you're ready to connect the trailer to your vehicle, simply plug the trailer end of the main harness into the 4-way flat connector on your vehicle.

Submersible LED Trailer Lights

CE48870 lights

The DOT-approved tail lights on this trailer are fully submersible, so you don't have to worry about water damaging the lights when you're loading and unloading your boat. Each tail light has brake, running light, and turn signal functions, as well as side marker lights and reflectors. In addition, these lights are comprised of LEDs, which last longer, burn brighter, and require less power than incandescent bulbs.

CE48870 side marker light

Amber side marker lights are included as well. They mount on the trailer's frame to keep the trailer visible from the side.

Marine-Grade Construction

CE48870 construction

The frame and fenders on this trailer are made of galvanized steel, giving them excellent resistance to rust and corrosion, even in saltwater. And the marine-grade carpeting on the bunks resists mold and mildew buildup, keeping the wooden bunks protected and free from rot.

Leaf Spring Suspension

CE48870 suspension

This trailer includes a leaf spring suspension system to limit road shock while you tow. A sturdy steel axle runs beneath the trailer frame. The 2 slipper springs on top of the axle flex to absorb the rough motion that can occur when driving over bumpy terrain. Also, the axle, spring hangers, and tie plate are galvanized to resist rust and corrosion.

Trigger-Style Coupler for Easy Hookup

CE48870 coupler

The trailer's trigger-latch-style coupler connects to a 2" hitch ball. The included safety chains act as an emergency measure if the coupler accidentally disconnects from your hitch ball. Finally, the tongue skid on the underside of the trailer tongue keeps the coupler up off the ground when it's not coupled.

Trailer is high quality and exactly as advertised. Easy to assemble, parts fit well together. Packaging / shipping was not very good, multiple boxes were torn open. Luckily no parts were missing. I would consider buying from etrailer again.

Very well. Have had no problems with the trailer at all. Makes going kayaking much easier.

Excellent trailer and easy to assemble

by:

My trailer arrived in 4 boxes, each were easy to move and unpack. The assembly video on the website was extremely helpful because this is a fairly big project and the parts can be confusing. I also needed the instructions for referencing which bolts to use. The instructions were not in any of the boxes so I called and immediately got help. We downloaded the PDF off the CE Smith website and were good. It's the perfect trailer for my needs and fully adjustable.
I found that watching the assembly video and having the instructions was what made assembly go smoothly, without both I would have been very confused.
This is a great way to pick up an affordable high quality trailer!

It’s been a great trailer for over a year now. I had issues with the lights not working properly. After quite an ordeal I found a qualified person to evaluate the problem and it turns out I had wired something the wrong way. Now it’s fixed and everything works perfect. It is fully adjustable so my 11ft Boston Whaler fits and tows flawlessly.

Took about 5hrs to assemble with no help .Very easy step by step instructions.so far very pleased time will tell.

by:

Great product, excellent packaging, simple instructions and illustrations. This will work well for my Sears 13’ Jon boat.
I would recommend this trailer for anyone with a low weight personal watercraft. A shout out to Paul in customer service for answering my question on registration/title info. They mail it to you separately, immediately, insuring that it doesn’t get lost in all that hardware.

Very well! Loading a Jon boat into a truck, at my age, was a lot of work. Trailering made it easy. I can haul down the road at 65 mph strait and secure. Kit was complete and simple to assemble. Great value.

Just this last summer trailered trailer 1600 miles with speeds at 75 mph..trailer springs very good. I trailered a 14 ft kayak and it rode well…

by:

I received bolt-together trailer CE48870, assembled it, and loaded onto it my 300-lb, partially completed, 11-foot speedboat without engine (outboard). I have not put the trailer on the road yet.

Though I had little problem in assembly, the instructions could be clarified and expanded for the benefit of those inexperienced in bolt-together trailer assembly. Examples are: (1) As has been pointed out by others, identification of parts bag numbers in instructions (vs only a photo) would be helpful. (2) Due to the lack of detail in the included instructions, it was possible to mount the fenders using the wrong set of holes in the main rails, requiring removal and remounting of both fenders. (3) Contrary to instructions, the rearmost bolt in the tongue did have to be removed for passage of the wiring connector back into the tongue for protection. (4) Installation of the tail lamp brackets per instructions (“holes toward the bottom”) would result in “backwards” positioning of the tail lamp pair. (5) The winch axle bolt had to be loosened and reoriented in order for the hex on the bolt and nut heads to clear the close tolerance slots in the bow stop bracket. This is not a big thing, but it should definitely be mentioned in the instructions (and video). Otherwise, this could lead to improper installation.

On the winch stand, I had to drill out the series of winch mounting holes for bolt passage, due to the zinc coating material flowing onto the perimeters of most of the holes during the galvanizing process. I would have preferred hex screws vs Phillips head screws for the bunks, due to location and torque requirements.

No parts were missing, except for one washer, for which wrong size was provided. I was impressed that the wire routing clips were of the barbed type, for more positive installation (tend less to slip off). The overall quality of the trailer appears very good to excellent. I’ve giving four stars vs five mostly because of the instructions.

Though the axle, springs, and tires of this trailer are individually rated at significantly more than 800 lbs, the entire assembly with frame is placarded to a derated gross weight of only 800 lbs. The next haul on this trailer, carrying the now completed and fully equipped boat, will be at 784 lbs gross trailer weight, which is therefore at nearly its full rated capacity. If there ARE towing problems, I’ll report, but I expect none, since the trailer frame components seem very well fabricated, the suspension parts axle, springs, wheels, tires appear to be of good quality, and I assembled it bolt-together CAREFULLY! The marketing photos show payloads which appear to be of much smaller weight than my boat, so this heavy of a payload may be unusual for this relatively new design by C.E. Smith just a few years old from my understanding. Tongue weight on my trailer as currently loaded is a bit lower 8.8 than intended, so I’ll be sliding boat forward on trailer several inches during first or second trip to the lake, 8 miles away. Happily, there remains plenty of space on the tongue forward of current station of the moveable winch stand do this.

Great little trailer!

by:

Well worth the price. perfect fit for our 14ft inflatable.
Video instructions is very well done.

by:

Top shelf materials . Though a leaf spring was missing from the original order.. I spoke with a customer service rep and situation was resolved very quickly

by:

Took six hours to put together. Recommend using written directions and youtube videos for instructions. Highly recommend using sockets as well as wrenches. You could do it with just wrenches, but it will take forever. A power socket driver would be even better like on the videos. Solid product once you get it put it together.

by:

It is almost done. Easy project to do!

Great! A high quality, affordable boat trailer.

by:

Website was easy to use shipping was super fast The tracking was nothing short of amazing and the quality of the trailer I have no complaints. I did Make a custom bracket and move the front bunk board closer to the front, personal preference only.

by:

Trailer is well made heavy duty construction. Parts go together nicely I would probably buy a powered ratchet wrench if I were to do it again. The instructions are well done and there are good video material to reference. I used it the first time yesterday and without the kayak on top of the trailer I could not see the trailer so today I ordered the guide posts which I would highly recommend to anyone buying the trailer.

by:

Shipping was surprisingly fast. Service from eTrailer was great.

Trailer went together really well except for one small item. Everything lined up. No issues. Instructions were easy plus eTrailer has a video online going over the build.

My one problem was that the bolts/nuts for the flairs were not right. This trailer is held together by a number of bolts and nylock nuts but the fender bolts/nuts would not tighten. Something between them was off. A quick trip to Lowe's for new hardware fixed that.

Very pleased.

by:

So far so good. Easy to follow instructions (about a six pack job). Tracks very well and the suspension is very good for rough back roads at high speed (the main reason I decided not to buy and modify a folding utility trailer and happy with the decision after i hit the first pot hole). I put the bunks perpendicular so I can transport a second kayak or storage box so I will need to see how well the bunk screws hold up in that config as its not exemplified in the instructions so may not be advised(?). Easy to move by hand with a heavy kayak (Old Town AP 136) on it. Buy a tounge handle and spare wheel just in case.

by:

I think it's a really nice trailer. Price is fair too. Assembly wasn't too difficult. One of the tounge pieces need to be crimped down with a vise on each side to fit in the main channel. Contacted customer service with a few questions. They got back to me right away. Was missing some hardware and they shipped this to me in a couple of days. The bunk setup was the hardest part to figure out. The old town needs the bunks low and close together as my photos show. Also, I had to drill and add (4) 1/4"dia bolts to keep the bunks from rotating. It handles very nice on the road. I would recommend this

by:

First, I received the trailer kit, in four boxes, ahead of schedule. Building the trailer is pretty much as easy as the etrailer.com video demonstrates. There are not many parts but there are a lot of bolts and compression nuts. I took about five hours to build the trailer using manual tools other than an electric drill for the bunk screws. That includes time to correct a couple of mistakes (not following the directions).

The lighting connected to my SUV's wiring harness and all lights work exactly as expected.

I have an Old Town Sportsman kayak that is 110 lbs empty and it is 13 1/2 feet long. I centered the weight toward the front bunker so about 54 inches extends beyond the back of the trailer. I could have moved it forward but opted to keep a lighter tongue weight.

Because of the kayak's weight, this trailer is so much easier than trying to haul the kayak on the top of my SUV. I plan to transport the kayak between Wisconsin and Florida, plus any place there is a boat launch and fish.

Thank you etrailer.com, and Noah, for making my life so much easier. This is money well spent!

This kit was so simple to put together and it worked perfectly.

After one year in use, my trailer is still working perfectly!

by:

Very solid and good instructions. Only thing I would do different is to make the boards wider or the brackets holes closer together. The brackets stick out a little and and scrape the boat.
That said I was very pleased.

Hi Boris; the CE Smith Multi Sport Plus Boat and Kayak Trailer # CE48870 you looked at would actually be perfect for your boat. This holds boats up to 14' long and has a capacity of 800 lbs. Bunks are going to be the best way to hold the boat and you can configure them running front to back or side to side, whichever works best for your setup. • Should Weight of Boat on Trailer be Balanced on Either Side of Axle
You actually do not want the weight of the load on a trailer to balance perfectly on either side of the axle. You want more weight forward so that the trailer doesn't sway. What you'll want is 10-15 percent of the total trailer weight as tongue weight so you'd want to position the boat and bunks further forward. For a lighter duty trailer setup like yours you could use a bathroom scale to measure the tongue weight when it's sitting level.

Hey David, glad you like the CE Smith Multi Purpose Plus Boat trailer part # CE48870! There isn't a grease schedule or anything for the hubs/bearings of the trailer. It really just comes down to how often you use the trailer but you might periodically repack the bearings. The standard recommendation is once a year or every 12k miles repack them. I don't really care for Bearing Buddies though as they make it too easy to overfill the hubs and blow out grease seals actually.

  • Replacement Wiring Harness for the CE Smith Multi Sport Plus Boat and Kayak Trailer CE48870
Welcome back David! Since you're dealing with multiple broken wires on the CE Smith Boat and Kayak Trailer item # CE48870, I strongly recommend replacing the entire wiring harness from the 4-Way connector back to the tail lights. This will prevent any future issues that may be caused by just repairing those faults. I check with CE Smith and they don't off their wiring harnesses as replacement parts. I recommend using the 25 Ft 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness item # A25W2GWB to replace your...

  • Availability Of Kayak Trailer Less Than 48" Wide
Hello Ben, thanks for reaching out. As far as the kayak trailers we offer, we do not have anything less than 48" wide. For example, the CE Smith Multi Sport Plus Boat and Kayak Trailer # CE48870 is 54" wide overall. I did see you were looking at the Malone Forge Kayak & Canoe Cart # MAL78CR. This is 30" wide overall so it would work in that regard. This is meant to be towed with a bicycle though and it would not work with a standard hitch ball connection. Other than this, I am sorry to...

Hello Ash, thanks for reaching out. It sounds like you are on the right track here because the CE Smith Multi Sport Plus Boat and Kayak Trailer w/ Bunks # CE48870 is definitely a good choice for hauling an inflatable catamaran. The roller bunks are also a good idea for raising the boat while hauling, and for assisting with loading and unloading. I went to their webiste and checked out all the specs. This trailer can handle Kayaks up to 14 feet long, so that puts you at the limit for the length. The width is 54" so that gives you plenty of wiggle room. To be able to hook...

  • Will CE Smith Multi Sport Plus Boat Trailer Work With Smoker Craft 14VFO Aluminum Fishing Boat?
Hello Rich, thanks for reaching out. The CE Smith Multi Sport Plus Boat and Kayak Trailer # CE48870 can absolutely work with a 14' boat. If the boat is just slightly over 14' that would not be a problem, you just might have to move the winch stand a bit farther up on the tongue to accommodate. As long as the boat does not exceed the 800 lb weight capacity you can carry it just fine with the CE Smith trailer. With the boat being aluminum, I imagine this will not be a problem. The Tires...
