Video Transcript for All You Need to Know About the Storage Trunk for Malone MicroSport and XtraLight Trailers

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Malone Storage Trunk for the Micro-Sport and the Extra Light. Part number MPG481. This storage trunk is going to sit underneath your kayaks, paddle boards, bikes, or any other accessories you've got mounted on your trailer. So you've got extra storage space to bring some gear with you.It comes with a nine foot tie down strap to keep your case secure to your trailer. And you'll find four locations where you can lock your top to your bottom to provide extra security. The whole case slides out, so when you get where you're going if it's filled with beach gear, just take it on down to the beach with you.

It's even got wheels so you can roll it along. There's four latches. Two on each side that hold the lid on. The entire lid can be removed for easy access to all your items. The included mounting brackets are made of a galvanized steel, so it'll be rust resistant and durable. Now as far as storage options for your Malone trailer, this is the only one that won't require modifications to your trailer.

It comes with everything you need to get it installed. Let's show you how to do that now.Included with your storage trunk, you're going to get two brackets. These brackets are going to mount on the existing hardware for your leaf spring. On the Extra Light, it's going to mount on the rear leaf spring bolts, using the two rear most holes of the bracket. But on your Micro-Sport it's going to mount on the front two holes of the bracket using the front leaf spring hardware.

Now, even though the bracket's going to mount in a different location depending if you have the Extra Light or the Micro-Sport, the process is going to be the same. You'll need a 9/16 inch wrench to remove the bolts for your leaf spring. Now we're ready to position our bracket into place. You want to take your wiring and make sure that it's not trapped underneath the bracket. And slide the bracket on the bolts. You may have to push the leaf spring in to get the bolt hole lined back up.

And then push it back up through the leaf spring bracket, frame, and box bracket. And put your nuts back on.Now you can place your trunk on the brackets, lining it up between the bracket ears. And before you strap it down, pop the lid off, fill it up with whatever gear you're going to bring with you, and now you can load it up with anything you need to bring with you on your trip. Whether it be chocks to hold your trailer, straps to tie-down your gear, sports equipment, you have everything you need and you're ready to strap it down.Use the included nine foot strap. Just slide it up through the side hole, out through the top hole, drape it across the top of the case, go down through the top hole, and the back out through the side hole. Slide it through the bottom opening of the felt protector and then through your buckle. Now, just pull it tight. And that completes our look at the Malone storage trunk for the Extra Light or Micro-Sport trailer.

Awesome product, fits great on my Ecolight. Install instructions were easy to follow and the extra storage means less trips to the truck to load & unload. Very sturdy construction. Everything arrived faster than anticipated and packed well.

The storage truck has held up perfectly over the last year. It has been extremely handy to have the extra storage right at the trailer to help with loading & unloading the kayaks and saves trips back & forth from the garage. Having everything readily available in a locked trunk is awesome. This is a must-buy for anyone with a Malone trailer.

I have had this bin on my trailer for over a year now. I use it to store my PFDs ropes and fishing gear. It keeps everything dry and the latches hold the cover on well.

by:

One of the brackets were bent but I still installed it. It works for now.

by:

Handy storage, put wet gear in there after kayaking and dry gear anytime.

by:

Fits nicely on the micro sport trailer!

by:

Very well engineered. Easy to install. Would highly recommend to others.

by:

Still holding up well after a year. Used frequently and has been a quality product.

by:

etrailer is a great site with very competitive pricing and shipping.

The Malone xtra-light storage box is awesome. I can put all the things from my Hobie Pro Angler into the box prior to towing it to my fishing location. Once I pull the kayak off the trailer I can open the box and set it up my gear (fish finder, rod holders, mirage drive, etc). The box locks and is strapped to the trailer while driving. It's perfect.

Excellent all around.

by:

Like the product but the instructions do not go with the trailer the way it shows. This is the second product of Malone that I received with incorrect instructions. It is not the fault of Etrailer. I am very happy with the items I have ordered from them.

What trailer are you using the storage trunk on? The trunk is compatible with Malones MicroSport and XtraLight trailers only, and the exact positioning of the trunk will depend on which of those two you have. You can see more details in the video provided above.

by:

This is flimsy, and requires the user to drill holes in the Malone Microsport Trailer to install it. THEN, you can't get to it when kayaks are on the trailer. It's a good idea, but poorly executed. However, the best part of this whole process was the fantastic customer service by William B! He is a true pleasure to deal with!

by:

This is a nice trunk for storage. Top comes off, no hinge. Four latches to hold top close.
However while on the trailer it is held in place with only a strap. So its not secure as
far as anyone could come along and take it. Also I don't think it could securely hold heavey items for long, I say this because the bottom of the trunk is not supported and I believe with heavey items bouncing inside the truck on road trips could cause it to fail, due to it not being to ridged. For now I keep it in my vehicle. I am looking at a modification on my trailer so it is secure, and will support the bottom as well. I use it for my Hobie mirage drive system and Boonedox wheels, fits but concern about weight. Not a problem while in vehicle. Nice trunk, but could use improvements.

I have a MicroSport trailer. The instructions for this kit are unclear and probably wrong. They say to use the rear bolt (only the rear, not two bolts!) of the front spring support in the front hole of the brackets. This is clearly wrong, because if you do that then the bottom of the box rests on the axle and won't go down far enough to rest on the bracket.

The next sensible thing to do (which etrailer's video shows) is to use both front spring bolts which moves the box forward so that it doesn't rest on the axle. However, this results in the front latches of the box resting on the front cross member of the trailer (see yellow arrow in the photo) and only the rear lugs of the box resting on the brackets. The front lugs are unsupported (see the red arrow in the photo.)

The other annoyance is since the box is resting on the front cross member the bottom of the latches are blocked. In order get your finger under it to unlatch you have to lift the box up. Not a problem if it is empty, but it becomes a real pain when the box is full and boats are above it.

This could probably be solved with 1.5" spacers so the brackets sit a bit higher. Malone should have put more thought into the brackets and the instructions should be re-written to better address the MicroSport trailer.

by:

Super convenient to be able to stow our paddling accessories like life jackets, pumps, gloves, and so on inside this convenient on-board trunk. It fits neatly inside the trailer frame and has plenty of room for lots of accessories!

by:

Mounting was a cluster because they sent the wrong brackets. But etrailer helped me get that fixed. It fits and works well. But in the end,I have not used it as I can fit everying in my car so far.

by:

This box is really nice, and fits perfectly on the Malone micro sport trailer. It is easy to install, and includes mounting brackets

by:

Great trailer. Well made and sturdy. Good instructions if you use Malone[online] video and the written instructions. Made assembly easier up on a table to build. A bit intimidating to start with all the parts but pretty fun to see it come together. It took me two 3 hour session. I just installed the Malone storage truck and would recommend purchasing it along with your trailer.

by:

Very thin for the money, but also lightweight and functional. I store everything I could possibly need for a full day of kayaking with the only exception being my 2-piece paddles.

by:

Very well made. Arrived quickly. Can't wait to road test on the next trip to the pond. We look forward to the extra storage space, for the 'what-ifs' and what tools they may require to settle.

by:

Super fast shipping and it perfectly fits my Eco-Light trailer. Bolted right in, though I pretty much ignored the instructions as they aren't for the Eco-Light. Makes a nice storage area for my PFD and my kayaking accessories.

by:

Bought this trunk for the Microsport trailer, works great to keep gear secure and tucked away.

by:

I am very pleased with the product and the etrailer company. The communication was very good. The storage bin was easy to install.

by:

The issue was taken of and the storage container was shipped, received and installed. I'm heading out for a kayak trip this weekend and haven't yet used it but am willing to upgrade to 5 stars based on customer service alone. Great job!

by:

Bit smaller than I expected... went together with no issues.

by:

I like it. Fits trailer perfectly!
Others
have similar trunks but they have a hinge making it difficult to open with kayaks loaded. So I'm glad I went t

by:

Box is difficult to close, top does not go on easily. The box walls are thin, this is strictly a light duty storage box.
