What Trailer do I Need to Haul My Kraken and Old Town Dirigo Kayaks and a Cargo Carrier?

Updated 05/27/2025 | Published 04/19/2025

Question:

I have two Old Town Dirigo 120 12’x28” kayaks and a 15’5”x30” Jackson Kraken. So a couple questions. I’d like to be able to carry two at a time on the days I’d like to fish while my wife paddles, or when a friend fishes out of one of the OT’s. The Jackson probably gears out just shy of 100lbs. but the Dirigos are relatively lightweight and relatively easily managed. I have a great Little Giant Trailer https://www.letsgoaero.com/collections/trailers with a shell and kayak rack, but the Kraken is simply to large for the side racks and too heavy for the top bars, not to mention impossibly lifting it. What I need is a trailer that will accommodate two kayaks with roller bunkers, a winch, and a folding or collapsible tongue, higher speed tires, and water proof hubs. A small storage box wouldn’t hurt. Your recommendations would be greatly welcomed. Thanks! Gary in Colorado.

Hey Gary,

Those are some really nice kayaks you have.

Thanks for the detailed question, sounds like you’ve got some great paddling and fishing ahead! Based on everything you’ve described, the Yakima EasyRider Double Decker Trailer # Y08129 is hands-down one of the best options for your needs. First off, the EasyRider is built for versatility and weight capacity. With its full-length 78” HD crossbars and a 500 lb load rating, it can easily handle your 15’5” Jackson Kraken (even geared out near 100 lbs) alongside one of your 12’ Old Town Dirigos. That gives you plenty of flexibility whether you're heading out solo, paddling with your wife, or fishing with a buddy.

Where the EasyRider really shines is loading ease. Its low deck height means you won’t have to lift the Kraken overhead like you do with your current Little Giant trailer, just roll it on. And while it doesn’t come stock with roller bunks or a winch, its sturdy crossbar system is compatible with Yakima SweetRoll Kayak Roof Rack w/ Tie-Downs - Saddle Style - Clamp On # Y04074.

It also meets all your towing needs: it includes high-speed tires and galvanized wheels ready for highway travel, marine-grade sealed bearings for water resistance, and a folding tongue for easier storage in tight spaces. On top of that, the double-decker design means you can add a cargo box or other gear on the upper tier. The Yakima SkyBox NX 16 Rooftop Cargo Box - 16 cu ft - Black Nano-Texture # Y95AV is a great cargo box for your gear.

Overall, the EasyRider gives you the strength, versatility, and ease-of-use you’re missing with your current setup, perfect for heavier days on the water without sacrificing convenience. I know it is quite a bit more than the one you were looking at, but it's the only system that checks all your boxes.

Also, don't forget a spare tire carrier the Spare Tire and Carrier for Yakima EasyRider Trailer # Y08125.

What kind of fish are you fishing for? I mainly fish for bass, I dabble in some tournaments here in Missouri at the Lake of the Ozarks and Mark Twain Lake.

Kate, Here’s another thought, the Yakima LowRider Kayak Trailer - 12" Wheels - 20' Boat - 750 lbs Could a foldable or adjustable tongue be adapted for this? Winch? Roller bunks? As wide as the crossbar is, I could load the Kranken on bunks and the two Dirigos on either side with J racks. thoughts? Thanks again! From the desk of: Gary P. Rossbach

@Gary Sorry, I was off for a few days. For what you're trying to accomplish, I would not recommend trailers with bunk boards like the CE Smith Multi Sport Plus Boat and Kayak Trailer w/ Bunks - 12" Wheels - 14' Boat - 800 lbs # CE48870. You wouldn’t be able to use J-cradles so I don't see you being able to get the 3 kayaks on their easily. If you went with the Yakima LowRider Kayak Trailer - 12" Wheels - 20' Boat - 750 lbs # Y82QD, it comes with HD crossbars, which would allow you to add accessories like the Inno Kayak Roof Rack w/ Tie-Downs - Post Style - Folding - Clamp On # INA455 for your two Dirigos, and still have room for your Kranken using the etrailer Kayak Carrier w/ Tie-Downs - J-Style - Folding - Clamp On # e98878. The only downside is that the Yakima trailer does not have an adjustable trailer tongue. After comparing the options, once you add the accessories, it can get a little pricey. Another option would be the Malone MicroSport Trailer with J-Style Carriers for 4 Kayaks - 800 lbs # MPG462G2, which already comes with four carriers. You could also add the Retractable Tongue Kit for Malone MicroSport Trailers # MPG494 if you need easier storage. Even though you mentioned three kayaks, this setup gives you room for a fourth if needed later. Or, you could go with the Malone MicroSportXT Trailer - 78" Crossbars - Retractable Tongue - 800 lbs # MPG460XT, which already includes the retractable tongue and 78" crossbars, and you can add whatever kayak carriers you prefer. Lots of different options to make the 3 kayaks work.

@KateF Thanks for all the info Kate. I need to be able single handedly load unload and haul that 100# plus Kraken with fishing gear, which at the moment is collecting dust in our garage. Okay after reviewing your suggestions, looking at all the options and thinking throught it, per your advice I think the best option for me will be the Malone MicroSportXT Trailer - 78" Crossbars - Retractable Tongue - 800 lbs # MPG460XT, with winch E45VV, winch bracket CE31013G, plus the spare kit and kickstand. I noticed in one of the customer pictures someone had mounted trailer supports on the frame when the tongue is folded. Would these be the ones: Stabilizer Jacks - 6-1/4" Drop Leg Travel - 650 lbs - Qty 2 Part Number: TJ01RT-HD? I’ll figure out the Dirigo kayak mounts once I get it put together. And you’re right - it got a little pricey, but getting out fishing it beats selling the kayak and all my gear! We’re in Colorado where I do a lot of stream fly fishing and some lake trout fishing in the Dirigos, but one of our local reservoirs has Tiger Muskie. I’m an old WI Muskie fisherman as well, and I’m geared for it. But I just haven’t been able to get back on the water with the Kraken/ I’m getting too old for the high and level lifting required, not to mention the current trailer isn’t quite heavy duty enough for the weight.

@Gary It's most important to figure out ways to do the things we love as we get older, and it sounds like this set-up will definitely do that for you. Just to break it down: - Malone MicroSportXT Trailer - 78" Crossbars - Retractable Tongue - 800 lbs # MPG460XT - Boat Trailer Winch w/ 23' Strap - 9-7/8" Handle - 1,000 lbs # e45VV - CE Smith Winch Stand - Galvanized Steel - 30" Tall x 2" Wide # CE31013G Then you could add the Stabilizer Jacks - 6-1/4" Drop Leg Travel - 18" - 650 lbs - Qty 2 # TJ01RT-HD to stabilize it with the tongue folded, or you could go with our etrailer Boat Trailer Jack w/ Wheel # MJ-1206B, and then a set of Chocks # FT11930MI to keep it in place. By adding the jack instead of the stabilizers, you will be able to easily maneuver the trailer when needed. The fish of 10 thousand casts. Very cool! My son used to go to a camp up near International Falls, he caught the Northern Pike of a lifetime 2 years ago. They would travel by canoe with their gear for a few weeks so he didn't have a scale or a tape measurer, just happy he got the picture or it never happened =)
