Features to know about

Keep the Rear End Up and Level: 1,000-lb Suspension Support

Heavy loads and trailers can make the rear sag, throwing off braking and steering. These SumoSprings Solo helper springs add up to 1,000 lbs of support at 50-percent compression to keep things level. The sturdy microcellular urethane cushions bumps and takes some of the strain off your factory suspension so you stay in control under load.

Smooth Ride When Empty, Firm When Loaded: Progressive Load Control

You don’t want a harsh ride when the bed’s empty or a sloppy one when it’s full. These springs compress easily with light loads for soft engagement, then stiffen up as weight increases—up to 80-percent compression under heavy loads. That progressive action keeps your ride smooth when unloaded and stable when towing or hauling.

Side-by-side comparison of SumoSprings Solo rear helper springs installed on a vehicle showing uncompressed versus compressed positions under load.

Stay Steady in Crosswinds and Turns: Independent Spring Action

Each spring works on its own side to balance uneven loads and cut down body roll. When you corner hard or deal with side winds, that independent movement helps keep your vehicle planted and reduces sway. It all adds up to a more confident, predictable feel behind the wheel.

Built Tough for Real-World Use: Durable Microcellular Urethane

These helper springs are built from microcellular urethane that holds up through temperature extremes from -25 F to 200 F. The material resists abrasion, oil, salt, and UV damage, and it compresses vertically with minimal side expansion so it won’t rub or interfere with nearby parts. Once installed, there’s no air pressure to monitor or lines to run—just solid, maintenance-free support every time you load up.

DIY Friendly Setup: Simple No-Drill Installation

Installing these helper springs is straightforward and doesn’t require drilling. The brackets clamp around the frame rails so you can handle the job with basic tools in your own garage or driveway. Two jounce-style springs are included, giving your rear suspension a clean upgrade that works as soon as you hit the road.

I bought and installed the 1000lb Sumo Solo springs to help alleviate rear end squat on my 2024 GMC Canyon Denali when pulling my boat. My boat trailer has a long mono tongue with no weight distribution installed. The boat weighs in at about 5500lbs, the truck fender lip measures 38” high unloaded, once I dropped the hitch down on the ball and the Sumos picked up the load, the fenders measured 36.25” equating to an inch and 3/4 squat. Empty the Sumos have an apx gap of 7/8” above the frame rails. The Sumos were recommended over the Timbrens for my situation of infrequent towing with this truck and to maintain the best ride possible when not towing. So far my ride is virtually unchanged when empty and feels controlled when towing. Installation is straight forward but the instructions could be a little clearer with a diagram showing the intended location of the springs. Luckily an etrailer customer had already done the install and provided some pics so there was no question. I chose to remove the tires to have good access and I’d do it again this way. I supported the truck with a jack stand under the receiver. IMHO the proper method to locate the over frame upper clamp brackets is to push the forward clamp as far forward until it contacts the bed stiffener and you’ll be in the correct location then let all the hardware hang to position itself, tighten as required and enjoy.

Excellent, I also tow a 6x12 cargo trailer which the Sumos do a great job of maintaining a level ride. I also installed Sumos front and rear on my 32 Tiffin motorhome. It utilizes the Ford F53 chassis and I believe they compliment that chassis well. Im definitely a big Sumo fan.

My Chevy Colorado developed squat when I hooked up my 400 pound tongue weight trailer to it and the steering felt off - these sumo springs were easy to install, (I’m a 61 year-old woman, and I did it on my own with no issues) gives me a better steering feel and makes my truck sit nice and straight. I’ve got a great looking rig now!

That is great to hear! I am glad you were able to get it installed, go you! They really do make a difference in the drive, but it also makes your setup look great too. What trailer are you towing?

by:
2018 Chevrolet Colorado
Definitely fixed the sway I was experiencing. Also softened the bigger bumps.
They did what they said they would do.
by:
2022 GMC Canyon
Fairly simple to put on but need to work around the brake lines and bed cross beams. I haven’t tried it yet with weight. I have enclose pic of drivers side. Maybe can’t tell from the pic but there is space and flexibility around the lines around bolt.

2024 GMC Canyon
Went on well. Not sure if supposed to be a gap between them and the leaf spring. Various groups have used these with the Canyon / Colorado and they too had no gap. Ride seems okay but can tell with hard bumps that rear end is more firm. Haven't towed anything yet, so I can speak to helping with that. But so far seems okay.

This is a good product. Instructions to install were easy to follow.
This product helped stabilize my Chevy Colorado when towing my trailer. The rear suspension doesn't compress as much which provides better handling for the front - the front isn't "lifted" when towing.
by:
Excellent product took 1/2 to install tested pulling Jayco toy hauler sag completely gone and any sway I had before is gone. Customer service Excellent promptly responding to each question I asked and also Etrailer did do the price matching guarantee. Very Pleased

2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
I put these on a 2013 Jeep JK (not lifted) that tows a 3000 lb trailer in rough terrain; Total game changer.

These replaced the anemic factory stops (which had completely disintegrated) and make it impossible to 'bottom out' on the dips and holes that use to beat up the suspension. I got nearly all of my vertical travel back and the vehicle now sits almost level under high tongue load.

They go on pretty easy. I suggest sliding in one side, and then using a wooden dowel and hammer to pop the other side in the stock receiver cup.

Highly recommended. These are a MUST if you are towing a trailer (with a medium sized SUV) of any significant weight or if you just want to be able to bounce hard without bottoming out your suspension. I am likely going to get the front suspension version now as well.
Wish I knew these existed sooner.

2025 Promaster 2500 159” wheelbase. Backed the van on couple 2” X 6 “ easier sliding under. Sprayed PB Blaster on top of bumper spring, using a 16” Channel Lock, easy off with the old. At that time I jacked the rear end to allow clearance. One side at a time. Took longer for set up then the job. I used the long bolt with two spacers. Have not drove yet, though looking for great results.

Glad to hear the install wasn't too bad, Michael! Definitely let us know how the ride is once you take it out for a drive! What are you using your Van for? The tires look pretty beefy.

This only pertains to the order, shipping speed, and install as I have not put a heavy load on these sumo Springs yet but I feel like that's a foregone conclusion based off the reviews already. The ordering process, the shipping, and the installation was unbelievably easy. I kept rereading the instructions thinking this can't be right because it was so simple. I looked at the YouTube video and realized it is that simple! So happy with the ordering process, the quality of the initial product I opened, and how simple it was to put on the jeep.

@ClaireH yes Ms Claire. I plan to put a truck camper on the Jeep (that weighs in the 500-1000 lbs range). My payload is 1700 lbs so I know a camper of the weight will be significant my truck. Already ordered a stiffer rear anti-sway bar as well.

@Justin That sounds like a good plan! These SumoSprings plus the sway bar should be more than enough to handle the weight of your truck bed camper.

  • Recommended Suspension Support While Towing a Trailer w/a 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2
Welcome back Bo! You are correct the SumoSprings like item # SSR-212-40 that fit the stock height 2023 Chevy Colorado are not going to engage properly when installed on your ZR2 model. The gaps too big and it'll do nothing but bounce your rear end around like a basketball. I checked with SumoSprings and there are no spacer options for the SumoSpring kits that fit the 2023 Chevy Colorado. This means you'll need to go with another option to address the sagging when you're towing. For...

  • Suspension Enhancement For 2018 Chevy Colorado With 600 lbs In Truck Bed
Hey Ron! At 600 lbs I would get the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs # SSR-212-40. These have 1,000 lbs of load support so they can handle whatever you're carrying plus a little extra if needed. They're also more forgiving when compared to the Timbren so you won't end up with a rough ride. What are you carrying in the Colorado?

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement for a 2024 GMC Canyon Pulling a Trailer
Personally I wouldn't go with Timbren's for your needs. They're essentially rubber bump stops that prevent your suspension from flexing when weights placed on the rear of your Canyon. The major issue with them is comfortability when you are not towing your trailer. These significantly affect the range of your suspension which can leave you with a stiff rigid feeling in the rear end. Plus if you hit a bump while there's weight on them they tend to bounce. Instead, I recommend the SumoSprings...

  • Do I Need Sumo Springs on Both Front and Rear Axle Using Weight Distribution on 2017 Chevy Colorado
A weight distribution system will transfer weight from the rear axle to the front axle on the tow vehicle but it won't be enough to sag the front suspension and engage the jounce spring most likely. Therefore, you would only want SumoSprings on the rear axle, even when using a weight distribution system. I recommend the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs part # SSR-212-40 or part # SS85FR for models with a diesel engine. The suspension supports will engage first, then you'll set the...

  • Compare SumoSprings SS85FR vs SSR-212-40 for 2016 Chevy Colorado Diesel
I can definitely shed some light on the confusion. While the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs - Rear Axle # SS85FR and the # SSR-212-40 seem to be exactly identical other than the color, they actually have different-shaped mounting brackets on them to fit different submodels of 2016 Chevy Colorado. I went ahead and attached photos that show this difference. With that being said, you are absolutely correct that the # SS85FR is customized for diesel models. However, the # SSR-212-40...

I do have a solution for you, but when I spoke with my contact at Air Lift she said that the frame on your 2017 GMC Canyon with the diesel engine is slightly different. Because of this the Ride Control # AL59533 you referenced doesn't line up properly. They currently don't have an adapter but I do have an alternative solution for you. • How To Stop Side to Side Sway When Towing with 2018 Chevy Colorado
I do have an option for you but an anti-rattle device won't do anything when towing a trailer. The SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs which install on the vehicle are great at reducing body roll and sway while towing or hauling. If you have a diesel engine then you'll want to use part # SS85FR or if you have a gas engine you'll want to use part # SSR-212-40.

  • Recommended Bump Stop Suspension Enhancement for a 2017 Chevrolet Colorado
Really the only difference between the Timbren part # TABSGMFCC and part # TABSOSR for your 2017 Chevrolet Colorado is that the former is rated for up to 1,000 lbs while the latter is rated for up to 3,600 lbs. Out of these options I would go with the set that has a higher rating. Since you do off-road driving you will want to use the off-road bumpstops referenced above.
