Will Brophy Camper Scissor Steps Work for You?

Scissor steps are typically installed on truck campers, but can be attached to your truck's tailgate using a special mounting bracket (TSSB - sold separately). After the initial installation, they're easy to attach when needed and detach for compact storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Brophy Mounting Bracket

The Brophy scissor steps have a single mounting bracket that attaches to either the camper wall or the truck bumper beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available for the mounting bracket on your application that lines up with the doorframe, and measure the width and height. You will need a mounting space at least 24" wide and 1" tall.

If it turns out you have less space beneath your doorway, there are smaller step assemblies available with 18-1/4" wide brackets. A full list of the available steps is below.

Once you have an approximation of where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, the spot you chose will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Brophy Entry Height

To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the "mounting point" to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays entry height measurement ranges in the first column. If you determined you need an 18-1/4" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the second column. If you determined you need a 24" mounting bracket width, the step part numbers with that width are in the third column. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

31" - 40"AS04, SS04AS24
40" - 48"AS05AS25

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Find the mounting spot for the bracket on your vehicle
  2. Unfold the steps and attach to the mounting bracket "V" clamps
  3. Place step assembly against camper or bumper

-Make sure assembly is centered beneath the doorway

  4. Mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill
  5. Remove steps from bracket and set aside
  6. Attach the mounting bracket to the camper

-Secure in place with included lag screws

  7. Hook stairs into mounting bracket "V" clamps and extend

  • Do Fold-Out Steps Need to be Removed When Mounting Brophy Scissor Steps
That is a good question, and you can leave your current fold-out steps up and in the folded position when installing the mounting bracket of the Brophy Scissor Steps. The reason is, the bracket will be installed just underneath the door so as long as when your steps are folded up there is no interference in that area the Brophy steps will be a great option. I added a photo for you a customer sent in which shows the bracket and steps installed so you can get an idea of how they mount. The...

  • Replacement Mounting Bracket for 24" Wide Brophy Camper Scissor Steps - 4 Steps
Hy Michael, thanks for reaching out! To replace the mounting bracket that came with the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps - 4 Steps # AS24 you need the part # AS2002. Rust can be really annoying to deal with, especially on parts like this that are exposed to a lot of the elements. If you start to see rust spring up again, the best way to fight it is to cover up the rust spot with some kind of coating - spray paint is a great way to get a basic coating.

  • Will the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS24 Fit a 2012 Raptor Velocity
Since trailer manufacturers don't typically keep a record of the exact stairs that they install on any given trailer the best way to know if the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS24 are compatible with your 2012 Raptor Velocity is to take some measurements. The Brophy steps have an adjustable height of 31" - 39" when they are expanded and the step dimensions are 24" wide x 8-3/4" deep x 1-1/2" thick. They have a weight capacity of 300 lbs and come with a 1-year warranty. Please note that...

  • Comparing The Brophy # AS24 And Torklift # TLA7844 For Truck Bed Camper With Limited Mounting Space
Not following the manufacturer's instructions to the letter will give them an excuse if something were to happen so while I can't recommend drilling the extra holes to ensure it's safely mounted, it's the only way that the steps will work with your application. I called Brophy and the warranty for their steps is a 1-year warranty. As for connecting the landing gears of the TorkLift GlowStep # TLA7844 to the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS24, this is something that we would not be able...

  • How To Determine If The Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS24 Will Fit A Truck Bed Camper
I've attached some dimensions below to help you determine fitment of the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS24 with your truck bed camper. The mounting bracket is 24" long x 1" tall (1-3/8" tall if you include the V-Clamps) so you'll need to ensure that there's enough room for the bracket to mount and that your entry height from that mounting point is 31" - 39". If you're stating that your camper sits 6.5" back from the edge of the truck with the tailgate sticking out further then you'll...

  • Comparing Camper Scissor Steps Brophy AS24 vs. Torklift TLA7804
Both the Brophy # AS24 and the TorkLift # TLA7804 are easily removed when not in use- and it's actually recommended that you do so. Additionally, they both weigh in around 26-lbs total, so they're easy to move on and off; so they'd both be great choices for what you're looking for. Overall I prefer the TorkLift # TLA7804 because of the quality of TorkLift products in general, plus you'll have the ability to add the All Terrain Landing Gear for TorkLift GlowStep Scissor Steps for RVs #...

  • How to Install the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps Part # AS24 on a Palomino Truck Bed Camper
The Brophy Camper Scissor Steps part # AS24 will require 1-1/4" of clearance between the bottom of the door and bottom of the cab on your Palomino Truck Bed Camper in order for the mounting bracket to attach. If you removed a portion of the trim piece where the bracket would mount to allow it to sit flush and this provides the minimum of 1-1/4" then you could do this.
