Troubleshooting RV AC that Keeps Tripping Breaker

Updated 09/02/2025 | Published 08/08/2025

Question:

I have a 2009 Winnebago Vectra with a basement A/C unit. This is the unit that has 2 compressors in the one assembly. The 1 compressor will come on when Im pluged into 30 amps, the 2 will come on I believe only when Im connected to 50 amp. I never have a problem with 2 comiong on, it develpoed this year where once in awhile when 1 comes on it will throw the 1 breaker. I traveled for 30 days some very high 90 degree temps. This happen twice during the day and once or twice during the night. When Im in the RV I just flip the breaker and all is well, but when Im out and the dog is alone in the RV that is where my concern is. Im fully aware of the shop in Tenneessee that speciliazes in these old basement models, I have a professional friend that will install this if it will work. My concerns 1 not sure where I can mount them as there is no room in the unit, 2 Ive read so much online and never seem to hear of anyone putting a soft start on this duel in one Coleman Mach. Please get back to me as soon as you can.

Hey Joe, it does sound like your start capacitor is possibly on it's way out if its sometimes throwing a breaker. Since capacitors are pretty inexpensive I would try replacing that to see if it helps. To replace an air conditioning (AC) capacitor, you'll need to match the microfarad (µF) and voltage ratings of the old capacitor, and ensure the replacement has the correct number and type of terminals. It could also be that the compressor is getting older and wanting to draw too many amps for the capacitor.

A SoftStart like the part # SSR44FR will help but I wouldn't recommend installing this until we know for sure that the capacitor is good.

Hey Joe, did you have a chance to replace the start capacitor to see if it resolved the issue with your A/C unit? I'm asking because your experience could help others who are dealing with similar problems.
