Fifth-Wheel Towing with Your Gooseneck Hitch

There are a variety of adapters on the market that let you tow a fifth-wheel trailer with a gooseneck hitch. You can use a coupler adapter that replaces the pin box on your fifth-wheel trailer and then attaches to the gooseneck hitch in your truck bed. But these adapters often require modifications to your trailer that can void the warranty. Another option would be using fifth-wheel rails that mount directly to your gooseneck hitch, usually by dropping into the hitch's ball hole. But to do this you have to make 2 separate purchases - the adapter plate that has the rails and a standard fifth-wheel hitch.

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Installation of the B&W Companion

To install the Companion, position the slider base so that the post inserts into your Turnoverball hitch's ball hole (in place of the hitch ball). Secure the post using the handle of the Turnoverball, just as you would secure the hitch ball. The post is square like the base of your gooseneck hitch ball. This square design helps to eliminate any twisting or turning of the post - and therefore the mounted fifth-wheel hitch - in your gooseneck hitch.

The next step is to set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance. To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

Video Transcript for B and W Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters BWRVK3400 Review

Mechanic: Today we're gonna take a look at the B&W Companion Dual Jaw Fifth Wheel cover hitch with the slider and a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now, this Companion fifth wheel hitch will utilize the B&W turnover ball under-bed mounting system, and that system is a gooseneck hitch that's mounted under your truck bed. This companion fifth wheel hitch has a center post right down here, and that center post will install into the gooseneck ball opening of that under-bed system, and then sit on your truck bed without using any rails that are attached to the truck bed. So, this will allow you tow a fifth wheel by using your turnover ball gooes neck hitch, and this hitch can be removed for a nice clean bed with no rails, and since you have no mounting rails, that means using your truck for more than just towing. Has this built in slider, which will provide clearance, 12 inches, front to back, which is required for your short bed truck to turn safely at slow speeds. It will automatically latch in both directions, so you only get out of the truck once to move it into the maneuvering position. The head has one inch thick dual jaws.

This will provide a nice 360 jaw to kingpin contact, because of that, it'll give you less rattle, more security than the slide bar jaws. The handle is a Cam Action Latching Handle, helps prevent any binding. Basically if you remove the pin and clip, all you have to do is just move the handle back, and you can see the jaws automatically open, and then when your kingpin slides in, pushes up against the handle, it'll push it right back into place and all you have to do is lock it. What's nice, it's very simple to release, even on un-leveled terrain. It is lockable, the whole here is large enough. It comes with a tethered pin and clip to lock it, but if you would like, for extra security, you could even put a padlock through there if you'd prefer, we do sell padlocks separately on our website.

The head on this is a fully articulating head, so it does ease hookup, helps limit chucking. Pivots front to back and side to side, and the head is sitting on these pivot arms, and at the top of the pivot arms are polyurethane bushings. So, when you drop the head on here, it gives you a nice quiet ride. Now there is hitch height settings. Your hitch height is critical, because when you tow your fifth wheel, you want to be as level as possible, so this will give you three different hitch height settings. How you do that is these pivot arms that are bolted to the base, the pivot arms'll 00:02:12 have two rows of holes in it, the base has five rows of holes, so it gives you three different settings, and those settings are 17 inches, 18 inches, and 19 inches.

The hitch height is always measured from the truck bed to the top of the hitch head, so it gives you range near the hitcher application. Now this is a nice two piece design for simple setup and removal. The hitch base with the slider will install in the truck bed. The hitch head secures to the base, and the hitch head can be easily removed if you pull these two pins and clips out. Lift up on these handles, that will release and you can lift it right off the pivot arms, very simple to do. Now, the construction of this is good grade powdered-coated steel, which is corrosion resistant.

Now, it does require, we mentioned the custom BMW under-bed mounting kit, which is required to install this. Those we do sell separately on our website. What I would recommend to do is use our fit guide on the website and put in your gear and model in your vehicle and it'll show you the correct kit you need. Now, this part is made in the USA. Few specs again, the gross towing weight capacity is 20 000 pounds. The vertical tongue weight or pin weight capacity is 5000 pounds. We mentioned the hitch height adjustment is 17 inches, 18 inches, or 19 inches. The slider traveler again is 12 inches front to back, and then to give you the idea of how much this takes up in your truck bed when it's installed. The foot print of this is about 35 inches wide, about 45 inches deep. Now, I do want to demonstrate the jaws, how they operate, and also the slider. So, again we have the pinning clip removed from the handle. So, again if you just rotate that handle back to where it's open, then I happen to have an example what the kingpin would be like on your fifth wheel. So, when you're backing up to hook up, you can see that the weight of the fifth wheel will push on to this handle. The very back here which you'll rotate that handle forward and completely wrap those jaws. The dual jaws around the kingpin. Once it's all the way forward, just take your pinning clip, drop it through the holes, and then just clip it, and that'll hold the handle into place to keep it from releasing the kingpin. Now, I have it set in the towing position, so it's locked in the towing position, which means the head is closest to the cab. So, as you're on the high way you don't need to make many turns. So, you want to be as close as possible to the cab. Now, once you get into a campground and you want to be able to maneuver your fifth wheel around, you might need to make some sharp turns. So, that's when you need to move into the maneuvering position and gain that extra 12 inches. So, you just get out, release it into the unlock position, and you can see as this fifth wheel will slide back, you can see I can actually stop, the handle will lock into position, and then you're in the maneuvering position. You've gained those extra 12 inches. Now, once you're done and you need to hook up and get back on the highway to tow, you want to be able to release it and move it back into the tow position. So again, you unlock it, that'll release it. As you move, you can see once it hits the towing position again, it locks into place and the handle locks down. Then you're all ready to tow. But that should do it. For the review on the B&W Companion Dual Jaw Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch with the slider, and a 20 000 pound weight capacity.

I absolutely love my Companion hitch. It is the quietest hitch I have ever owned. It also has the the strongest and thickest jaws around the fifth wheel king pin I have ever owned. The slide is very easy to operate and even though it is quite heavy for a 69 year old man to take it out and put it in my truck I still would recommend it to anyone who needs a combo gooseneck and fifth wheel hitch set up. There is absolutely no slop or movement of the king pin in the jaws, unlike most other style fifth wheel hitches that I have owned in the past. In my opinion you would have to go way out on a limb to try and top this one. Dan seegmiller 495375

The B and W Companion gooseneck and fifth wheel adapter works very nicely and when removed the pickup box has no additional brackets or hardware that get in the way of the load. The only reason I did not give it a full 5 stars is that it is too heavy to be removed by one person unless assisted by a lifting device. I use my portable cherry picker to lift it out of the receiver tube. Other than that small issue I am very happy with the product and would purchase it again. 479679

Fantastic, quiet, no bangs or noises. Only issue is that it is so heavy, I need help removing it when I need to use the truck bed. Have used the gooseneck ball to move my buddies horse trailer, no issues either. 274039

  • Concerns About Towing a 5th Wheel Trailer with a Dodge Ram 3500 Equipped with a Goose Neck Hitch
  • There are several ways to adapt a 5th wheel trailer to enable it to be towed with a truck that has a goose neck hitch installed. The best choice for you will depend on how often you need to change between trailer types. Some of the adapters that allow this flexibility will put more stress on the trailer frame than other types. Options are still somewhat limited for newer vehicles like your 2014 Ram. The best method is to replace the pin box on your 5th wheel with a compatible goose box...

  • There is no difference at all between the B and W Companion hitch part # BWRVK3400 and the # BWRVK3400-5W. We use the -5W at the end of the part number to allow the hitch to show up in two different fitguides. One for the gooseneck fitguide and then one for the fifth wheel fitguide. The Companion setups are considered by many to be the nicest fifth wheel hitch around. The Companion slider is going to be a much better option than using an adapter to use the stationary Pro Series hitch.

  • Can a Short Bed Truck Tow a 5th Wheel Camper, Determining Turning Clearance for 5th Wheel Camper
  • Turning clearance is always going to be best with a long bed truck. Trucks with long beds are more designed for towing, and there are less of them on the market today because more people are buying trucks for reasons other than towing. If I were choosing a bed length to tow a 5th wheel camper, I would definitely go with a long bed because it will most easily offer sufficient turning clearance. Some 5th wheel campers have a nose that is specially designed to work with short bed trucks....

For a gooseneck ball that sticks up from the bed (and is not recessed in a cavity like on a flat bed truck) you can use the Demco Recon hitch # DM8550045. • Can 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 Tow 5th Wheel Trailer
  • Your 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 is capable of towing a fifth wheel trailer. Your trailer's overall towing capacity will be the weight of the trailer it can tow. The trailer's pin weight does not factor into the bed's pay load either. Email me back with the bed length of your truck and I'll get you all setup. But in the mean time if you have a long bed truck you'd want a fixed hitch since you don't need a slider for turning clearance. So for that the Reese Hitch Part # RP30047 would...

  • Is There Any Difference Between B&W BWGNRK1313-5W, and the BWGNRK1313 Installation Kits
  • There is no difference between the B&W Underbed Trailer Hitch part # BWGNRK1313 and part # BWGNRK1313-5W. The reason they are listed separately is because we want to make them easy to find for both gooseneck and fifth wheel searches. These are both capable of being used as a gooseneck hitch and also can be used with the Companion fifth wheel hitches. With your 2007 Ram 2500 and an 8 ft bed I recommend going with the B&W Companion Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter, part #...

  • B&W Gooseneck Hitch and AirLift Airbag Kit for 2018 Ford F-150 4x4 Crew Cab with 6-1/2-Foot Bed
  • We can help you select a rear-axle air bag kit for your 2018 Ford F-150 4x4 crew cab with 6-1/2-foot bed that will be compatible with an in-bed hitch such as a B&W gooseneck. The gooseneck hitch from B&W that fits your truck is kit # BWGNRK1115. This kit includes frame brackets that do not require drilling. And if you ever need to tow a 5th wheel all you need to add is the B&W Companion Slider hitch # BWRVK3400. For an in-bed 7-way harness use part # 50-97-410-010 from Bargman. For...

  • Gooseneck Hitch Fits for 2016 Ford F-250 Super Duty with 6-3/4-Foot Bed
  • The B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch # BWGNRK1111 is indeed a confirmed fit for your 2016 Ford F-250 Super Duty with 6-3/4-foot bed. I verified this with my technical contact at B&W. For reference I have linked an installation video showing a 2015 F-250. If you also need a 5th Wheel/Gooseneck trailer wiring harness for your truck you can use the Curt # C56000. This is a simple installation at your existing 7-way; that bumper-mounted socket remains active after you install...

  • Gooseneck Adapter For Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch
  • There is not a square shank adapter for the B-W Companion Sliding Hitch # BWRVK3400 for any other underbed gooseneck system. It is only compatible with the B&W gooseneck system. You may be able to use the Curt X5 5th Wheel Base Rails Adapter for Curt Double Lock Gooseneck Trailer Hitches - 20,000 lbs # C16210 although this is not a confirmed fit. If that adapter fits, you could use it along with any standard sliding hitch like the Curt Q20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R20 Slider -...

  • We offer everything you need to tow a 5th wheel and or gooseneck trailer with your 2019 Ford F-250. The factory does offer a prep package but if you are looking to save money then aftermarket would be the way to go. The main advantage you have with factory installed components is their warranty but there are pros and cons to each options as well. The best setup we have for your F-250 which will allow you to tow both gooseneck and 5th wheels trailers is to use the B&W Turnoverball Underbed...

  • Hitch Cover Recommendation for a B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3400
  • The Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Cover # RP30055 should have no problem fitting the head of your B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3400. The only fifth wheel hitches this cover doesn't fit are the ones that have larger heads like the Elite hitches. The Companion has a smaller head so this would work just fine.

  • Solution For B and W Companion Slider Hitch that Hits Tailgate of Truck When Slid Back
  • Since you said you have a B and W Companion hitch # BWRVK3400 there is a way to get more clearance between the tailgate of the truck and the hitch. The arms that hold the head of the hitch can be moved forward and back. If you take a look at the diagram I attached you can see the various setting that can be used. What you can do is move the head of your hitch further forward and you'll have more clearance.

  • Formula Used for Determining if Fifth Wheel Truck and Trailer will have Turning Clearance
  • Sounds like you are looking for the formula for determining if you have enough clearance to make 90 degree turns with a fifth wheel trailer hitched up to a truck. The formula you are referring to is this: (A + B) - C = Clearance A = Distance from the fifth wheel jaw center to the truck cab B = Offset used (slider clearance or Sidewinder offset) C = Width of the nose of the trailer divided by 2. Hopefully your trailer has a nose on it that is tapered in designed specifically...
