Fifth-Wheel Towing with Your Gooseneck Hitch

There are a variety of adapters on the market that let you tow a fifth-wheel trailer with a gooseneck hitch. You can use a coupler adapter that replaces the pin box on your fifth-wheel trailer and then attaches to the gooseneck hitch in your truck bed. But these adapters often require modifications to your trailer that can void the warranty. Another option would be using fifth-wheel rails that mount directly to your gooseneck hitch, usually by dropping into the hitch's ball hole. But to do this you have to make 2 separate purchases - the adapter plate that has the rails and a standard fifth-wheel hitch.

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Installation of the B&W Companion

To install the Companion, position the slider base so that the post inserts into your Turnoverball hitch's ball hole (in place of the hitch ball). Secure the post using the handle of the Turnoverball, just as you would secure the hitch ball. The post is square like the base of your gooseneck hitch ball. This square design helps to eliminate any twisting or turning of the post - and therefore the mounted fifth-wheel hitch - in your gooseneck hitch.

The next step is to set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance. To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

Mechanic: Today we're gonna take a look at the B&W Companion Dual Jaw Fifth Wheel cover hitch with the slider and a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now, this Companion fifth wheel hitch will utilize the B&W turnover ball under-bed mounting system, and that system is a gooseneck hitch that's mounted under your truck bed. This companion fifth wheel hitch has a center post right down here, and that center post will install into the gooseneck ball opening of that under-bed system, and then sit on your truck bed without using any rails that are attached to the truck bed. So, this will allow you tow a fifth wheel by using your turnover ball gooes neck hitch, and this hitch can be removed for a nice clean bed with no rails, and since you have no mounting rails, that means using your truck for more than just towing. Has this built in slider, which will provide clearance, 12 inches, front to back, which is required for your short bed truck to turn safely at slow speeds. It will automatically latch in both directions, so you only get out of the truck once to move it into the maneuvering position. The head has one inch thick dual jaws.

This will provide a nice 360 jaw to kingpin contact, because of that, it'll give you less rattle, more security than the slide bar jaws. The handle is a Cam Action Latching Handle, helps prevent any binding. Basically if you remove the pin and clip, all you have to do is just move the handle back, and you can see the jaws automatically open, and then when your kingpin slides in, pushes up against the handle, it'll push it right back into place and all you have to do is lock it. What's nice, it's very simple to release, even on un-leveled terrain. It is lockable, the whole here is large enough. It comes with a tethered pin and clip to lock it, but if you would like, for extra security, you could even put a padlock through there if you'd prefer, we do sell padlocks separately on our website.

The head on this is a fully articulating head, so it does ease hookup, helps limit chucking. Pivots front to back and side to side, and the head is sitting on these pivot arms, and at the top of the pivot arms are polyurethane bushings. So, when you drop the head on here, it gives you a nice quiet ride. Now there is hitch height settings. Your hitch height is critical, because when you tow your fifth wheel, you want to be as level as possible, so this will give you three different hitch height settings. How you do that is these pivot arms that are bolted to the base, the pivot arms'll 00:02:12 have two rows of holes in it, the base has five rows of holes, so it gives you three different settings, and those settings are 17 inches, 18 inches, and 19 inches.

The hitch height is always measured from the truck bed to the top of the hitch head, so it gives you range near the hitcher application. Now this is a nice two piece design for simple setup and removal. The hitch base with the slider will install in the truck bed. The hitch head secures to the base, and the hitch head can be easily removed if you pull these two pins and clips out. Lift up on these handles, that will release and you can lift it right off the pivot arms, very simple to do. Now, the construction of this is good grade powdered-coated steel, which is corrosion resistant.

Now, it does require, we mentioned the custom BMW under-bed mounting kit, which is required to install this. Those we do sell separately on our website. What I would recommend to do is use our fit guide on the website and put in your gear and model in your vehicle and it'll show you the correct kit you need. Now, this part is made in the USA. Few specs again, the gross towing weight capacity is 20 000 pounds. The vertical tongue weight or pin weight capacity is 5000 pounds. We mentioned the hitch height adjustment is 17 inches, 18 inches, or 19 inches. The slider traveler again is 12 inches front to back, and then to give you the idea of how much this takes up in your truck bed when it's installed. The foot print of this is about 35 inches wide, about 45 inches deep. Now, I do want to demonstrate the jaws, how they operate, and also the slider. So, again we have the pinning clip removed from the handle. So, again if you just rotate that handle back to where it's open, then I happen to have an example what the kingpin would be like on your fifth wheel. So, when you're backing up to hook up, you can see that the weight of the fifth wheel will push on to this handle. The very back here which you'll rotate that handle forward and completely wrap those jaws. The dual jaws around the kingpin. Once it's all the way forward, just take your pinning clip, drop it through the holes, and then just clip it, and that'll hold the handle into place to keep it from releasing the kingpin. Now, I have it set in the towing position, so it's locked in the towing position, which means the head is closest to the cab. So, as you're on the high way you don't need to make many turns. So, you want to be as close as possible to the cab. Now, once you get into a campground and you want to be able to maneuver your fifth wheel around, you might need to make some sharp turns. So, that's when you need to move into the maneuvering position and gain that extra 12 inches. So, you just get out, release it into the unlock position, and you can see as this fifth wheel will slide back, you can see I can actually stop, the handle will lock into position, and then you're in the maneuvering position. You've gained those extra 12 inches. Now, once you're done and you need to hook up and get back on the highway to tow, you want to be able to release it and move it back into the tow position. So again, you unlock it, that'll release it. As you move, you can see once it hits the towing position again, it locks into place and the handle locks down. Then you're all ready to tow. But that should do it. For the review on the B&W Companion Dual Jaw Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch with the slider, and a 20 000 pound weight capacity.

B&W Companion Slider Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs - BWRVK3400

Average Customer Rating:  4.9 out of 5 stars   (14 Customer Reviews)

Quickly and easily convert your B&W Turnoverball gooseneck hitch to a sturdy 5th-wheel trailer hitch. Built-in slider helps eliminate clearance concerns during slow-speed turns. Dual-jaw hitch removes without a trace for full bed access.

The B and W Companion gooseneck and fifth wheel adapter works very nicely and when removed the pickup box has no additional brackets or hardware that get in the way of the load. The only reason I did not give it a full 5 stars is that it is too heavy to be removed by one person unless assisted by a lifting device. I use my portable cherry picker to lift it out of the receiver tube. Other than that small issue I am very happy with the product and would purchase it again. 479679

I have pulled my 34 foot 5th wheel over 7000, miles in the year that I have owned the Companion hitch and have had no issues. Being new to a 5th wheel I have nothing to compare it to, but I couldn’t imagine anything out performing this setup. I still appreciate the fact that when I pull the hitch out of the box of my truck there is nothing that interferes with any load that I haul, weather it is a load of lumber or landscaping mulch. Only down side is the overall weight of the hitch when I remove it alone, I do need a mobile cherry picker. Well worth the price and would recommend it to anyone.

Thanks for the feedback, we have had other customers tell us that they do some disassembly of the head from the base to help when removing their companion from the bed of their truck. It is still a daunting task, but eliminating some weight while trying to move it works a little better.

Takes some time to install but overall a fairly easy install. Allows you to have full use of bed when not pulling your trailer. 450758

Fantastic, quiet, no bangs or noises. Only issue is that it is so heavy, I need help removing it when I need to use the truck bed. Have used the gooseneck ball to move my buddies horse trailer, no issues either. 274039

I absolutely love my Companion hitch. It is the quietest hitch I have ever owned. It also has the the strongest and thickest jaws around the fifth wheel king pin I have ever owned. The slide is very easy to operate and even though it is quite heavy for a 69 year old man to take it out and put it in my truck I still would recommend it to anyone who needs a combo gooseneck and fifth wheel hitch set up. There is absolutely no slop or movement of the king pin in the jaws, unlike most other style fifth wheel hitches that I have owned in the past. In my opinion you would have to go way out on a limb to try and top this one. Dan seegmiller 495375

I have loved this hitch. The ordering process was easy and it was shipped immediately. Installation was easy and took me about 1 hour. we have used this hitch to pull our 31 foot fifth wheel trailer over the last year and have had absolutely no problems. I would recommend this hitch to anyone. 311055

I purchased the B&W 20K Companion Slider & Underbed Mount System (UMS) for my 2015 Ford F150 extended cab (with 6 foot bed) over a year ago because it was the only solution that was removable. Construction and finish was very nice and still looks great. Installation wasn't too difficult but the 4” hole in the bed needs to be exact otherwise getting it square will be very difficult. Overall the slider works great but must be mounted directly on the bed and cannot be mounted over a plastic bed liner. Once installed everything worked great however after numerous trips I've yet to need or use the slider backing up as I can turn 80+ degrees without ever hitting or coming close to the truck cab (towing 2018 Cougar Half Ton Series 5th wheel). Also the slider is very heavy (head 75 lbs + base 207 lbs = 282 lbs) to remove and install (takes two people or an overhead winch). Plus the overall hitch weight (head, base & UMS is 394 lbs) puts me very close to the GVWR once the truck & trailer is fully loaded hence in hindsight I probably should have gone with the fixed 5th wheel hitch (total just 318 lbs compared to 400 lbs) instead as it would have saved 81 lbs and costs $489 less but at least I have the option to slide it back if ever needed. 606485

  • The Reese Goose Box # RP94720 referenced in your question, which is designed to replace the Lippert 1621, 1621HD and 0719 pin boxes, will not provide any additional clearance for short bed trucks above what the factory pin box offers. With the Goose Box installed, you will likely still have trouble making tight turns with your short bed F-350, but there is a formula that can help you confirm this. To find out if your truck will have enough clearance to make tight turns, you will simply...

We use the -5W at the end of the part number to allow the hitch to show up in two different fitguides. One for the gooseneck fitguide and then one for the fifth wheel fitguide. The Companion setups are considered by many to be the nicest fifth wheel hitch around. The Companion slider is going to be a much better option than using an adapter to use the stationary Pro Series hitch.

Since the rail kit mentioned doubles as a gooseneck hitch you'd have both trailer styles covered.

  • Will the Reese Goose Box Work with a Short Bed Truck to a Tow 5th Wheel Trailer
  • The Reese Goose Box # RP94720 can be used with a short bed truck but it won't give you any additional turning clearance. If the 5th wheel trailer is really narrow or has a tapered front cap that was designed to be towed by a short bed truck then you would be fine. Otherwise the best solution would be to use a slider 5th wheel hitch. If you happen to have a B&W Turnover Ball gooseneck hitch then you can use the Companion slider # BWRVK3400. Otherwise you will have to remove the gooseneck...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch and Tonneau Cover Recommendation for 2017 Ram 3500 with Short Bed
  • For your 2017 Ram 3500 6-1/2 Foot Bed without Factory Rail Kit you'll need a slider hitch to allow you to make tight turns without cab interference. My favorite slider hitches are the ones that automatically slide as you make tight turns as that saves you the hassle of getting out and activating the slider every time it's needed. For that I would recommend the Demco Hijacker part # DM8550037 and the install rail kit part # DM8551006. This is an underbed rail kit too which means when...

  • What Does the B&W Companion Slider Hitch # BWRVK3400 Weigh
  • The B&W Companion Slider Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter # BWRVK3400 weighs 281 lbs. It can be taken apart in sections though to allow it to be easier to manage.

  • Troubleshooting B&W Companion Slider Base Stuck In Gooseneck
  • I reached out to my contact at B&W and they said that the B&W Companion Slider Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs # BWRVK3400 sometimes within the first use or two this happens if you haven't used grease. You have already done a great job with loosening the draw down bolt and removing the pin. Next, make sure you are pulling it straight up. You may need a couple people to help this time since it is already stuck. You can use a pry bar on each area right...

  • Will the B and W Companion Hitch Work With a Trailair Cushioned Pin Box
  • The Trailair Air Ride 5th Wheel Pin Box # LC158778 would work great with a B and W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch like the part # BWRVK3500 if this was the correct Trailair for your trailer. Or if you have a short bed and need a slider hitch the Companion part # BWRVK3400. There would be no compatibility issues. You will need to determine what pin box is currently on your 2015 Landmark Savannah in order to pick out the correct replacement cushioned pin box to use. There will be a plate...

  • Gooseneck Hitch Fits for 2016 Ford F-250 Super Duty with 6-3/4-Foot Bed
  • The B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch # BWGNRK1111 is indeed a confirmed fit for your 2016 Ford F-250 Super Duty with 6-3/4-foot bed. I verified this with my technical contact at B&W. For reference I have linked an installation video showing a 2015 F-250. If you also need a 5th Wheel/Gooseneck trailer wiring harness for your truck you can use the Curt # C56000. This is a simple installation at your existing 7-way; that bumper-mounted socket remains active after you install...

  • Adapting a Gooseneck Hitch to Tow a 5th Wheel Trailer with a 2011 Ford F-350
  • The hole for gooseneck balls are not all the same. The Companion hitches such as # BWRVK3050, which was designed for flat bed trucks, only fit B&W Turnover Ball gooseneck hitches. For a gooseneck ball that sticks up from the bed (and is not recessed in a cavity like on a flat bed truck) you can use the Demco Recon hitch # DM8550045. It clamps around a 2-5/16 inch gooseneck ball. I have included a link to a video review of this hitch for you. Another option is to adapt the trailer...

  • How to Remove Stuck B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3400
  • I spoke to my contact at B&W and we believe that the problem on your B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3400 has to do with that center shank is wedged in your hitch. If you can disengage the pin that secures the slider to your gooseneck hitch and then slam the hitch itself back and forth that should loosen it up enough that you can remove it. The other option would be to use a long crowbar to try to loosen it up from underneath your truck, but the first method should do the trick.

  • Hitch Cover Recommendation for a B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3400
  • The Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Cover # RP30055 should have no problem fitting the head of your B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3400. The only fifth wheel hitches this cover doesn't fit are the ones that have larger heads like the Elite hitches. The Companion has a smaller head so this would work just fine.

  • Difference of Part Numbers for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch
  • B&W re-designed the RVK3400 hitch with a little bit different styling and changed the part number to the RVK3405. Our part # BWRVK3400 is the RVK3405 but we just didn't change our part number.

  • Is There Any Difference Between B&W BWGNRK1313-5W, and the BWGNRK1313 Installation Kits
  • There is no difference between the B&W Underbed Trailer Hitch part # BWGNRK1313 and part # BWGNRK1313-5W. The reason they are listed separately is because we want to make them easy to find for both gooseneck and fifth wheel searches. These are both capable of being used as a gooseneck hitch and also can be used with the Companion fifth wheel hitches. With your 2007 Ram 2500 and an 8 ft bed I recommend going with the B&W Companion Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter, part #...
