Fifth-Wheel Towing with Your Gooseneck Hitch

There are a variety of adapters on the market that let you tow a fifth-wheel trailer with a gooseneck hitch. You can use a coupler adapter that replaces the pin box on your fifth-wheel trailer and then attaches to the gooseneck hitch in your truck bed. But these adapters often require modifications to your trailer that can void the warranty. Another option would be using fifth-wheel rails that mount directly to your gooseneck hitch, usually by dropping into the hitch's ball hole. But to do this you have to make 2 separate purchases - the adapter plate that has the rails and a standard fifth-wheel hitch.

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Installation of the B&W Companion

To install the Companion, position the slider base so that the post inserts into your Turnoverball hitch's ball hole (in place of the hitch ball). Secure the post using the handle of the Turnoverball, just as you would secure the hitch ball. The post is square like the base of your gooseneck hitch ball. This square design helps to eliminate any twisting or turning of the post - and therefore the mounted fifth-wheel hitch - in your gooseneck hitch.

The next step is to set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance. To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

Video Transcript for B and W Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters - Adapts Truck - BWRVK3400 Review

Mechanic: Today we're gonna take a look at the B&W Companion Dual Jaw Fifth Wheel cover hitch with the slider and a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now, this Companion fifth wheel hitch will utilize the B&W turnover ball under-bed mounting system, and that system is a gooseneck hitch that's mounted under your truck bed. This companion fifth wheel hitch has a center post right down here, and that center post will install into the gooseneck ball opening of that under-bed system, and then sit on your truck bed without using any rails that are attached to the truck bed. So, this will allow you tow a fifth wheel by using your turnover ball gooes neck hitch, and this hitch can be removed for a nice clean bed with no rails, and since you have no mounting rails, that means using your truck for more than just towing. Has this built in slider, which will provide clearance, 12 inches, front to back, which is required for your short bed truck to turn safely at slow speeds. It will automatically latch in both directions, so you only get out of the truck once to move it into the maneuvering position. The head has one inch thick dual jaws.

This will provide a nice 360 jaw to kingpin contact, because of that, it'll give you less rattle, more security than the slide bar jaws. The handle is a Cam Action Latching Handle, helps prevent any binding. Basically if you remove the pin and clip, all you have to do is just move the handle back, and you can see the jaws automatically open, and then when your kingpin slides in, pushes up against the handle, it'll push it right back into place and all you have to do is lock it. What's nice, it's very simple to release, even on un-leveled terrain. It is lockable, the whole here is large enough. It comes with a tethered pin and clip to lock it, but if you would like, for extra security, you could even put a padlock through there if you'd prefer, we do sell padlocks separately on our website.

The head on this is a fully articulating head, so it does ease hookup, helps limit chucking. Pivots front to back and side to side, and the head is sitting on these pivot arms, and at the top of the pivot arms are polyurethane bushings. So, when you drop the head on here, it gives you a nice quiet ride. Now there is hitch height settings. Your hitch height is critical, because when you tow your fifth wheel, you want to be as level as possible, so this will give you three different hitch height settings. How you do that is these pivot arms that are bolted to the base, the pivot arms'll 00:02:12 have two rows of holes in it, the base has five rows of holes, so it gives you three different settings, and those settings are 17 inches, 18 inches, and 19 inches.

The hitch height is always measured from the truck bed to the top of the hitch head, so it gives you range near the hitcher application. Now this is a nice two piece design for simple setup and removal. The hitch base with the slider will install in the truck bed. The hitch head secures to the base, and the hitch head can be easily removed if you pull these two pins and clips out. Lift up on these handles, that will release and you can lift it right off the pivot arms, very simple to do. Now, the construction of this is good grade powdered-coated steel, which is corrosion resistant.

Now, it does require, we mentioned the custom BMW under-bed mounting kit, which is required to install this. Those we do sell separately on our website. What I would recommend to do is use our fit guide on the website and put in your gear and model in your vehicle and it'll show you the correct kit you need. Now, this part is made in the USA. Few specs again, the gross towing weight capacity is 20 000 pounds. The vertical tongue weight or pin weight capacity is 5000 pounds. We mentioned the hitch height adjustment is 17 inches, 18 inches, or 19 inches. The slider traveler again is 12 inches front to back, and then to give you the idea of how much this takes up in your truck bed when it's installed. The foot print of this is about 35 inches wide, about 45 inches deep. Now, I do want to demonstrate the jaws, how they operate, and also the slider. So, again we have the pinning clip removed from the handle. So, again if you just rotate that handle back to where it's open, then I happen to have an example what the kingpin would be like on your fifth wheel. So, when you're backing up to hook up, you can see that the weight of the fifth wheel will push on to this handle. The very back here which you'll rotate that handle forward and completely wrap those jaws. The dual jaws around the kingpin. Once it's all the way forward, just take your pinning clip, drop it through the holes, and then just clip it, and that'll hold the handle into place to keep it from releasing the kingpin. Now, I have it set in the towing position, so it's locked in the towing position, which means the head is closest to the cab. So, as you're on the high way you don't need to make many turns. So, you want to be as close as possible to the cab. Now, once you get into a campground and you want to be able to maneuver your fifth wheel around, you might need to make some sharp turns. So, that's when you need to move into the maneuvering position and gain that extra 12 inches. So, you just get out, release it into the unlock position, and you can see as this fifth wheel will slide back, you can see I can actually stop, the handle will lock into position, and then you're in the maneuvering position. You've gained those extra 12 inches. Now, once you're done and you need to hook up and get back on the highway to tow, you want to be able to release it and move it back into the tow position. So again, you unlock it, that'll release it. As you move, you can see once it hits the towing position again, it locks into place and the handle locks down. Then you're all ready to tow. But that should do it. For the review on the B&W Companion Dual Jaw Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch with the slider, and a 20 000 pound weight capacity.

I purchased the B&W 20K Companion Slider & Underbed Mount System (UMS) for my 2015 Ford F150 extended cab (with 6 foot bed) over a year ago because it was the only solution that was removable. Construction and finish was very nice and still looks great. Installation wasn't too difficult but the 4” hole in the bed needs to be exact otherwise getting it square will be very difficult. Overall the slider works great but must be mounted directly on the bed and cannot be mounted over a plastic bed liner. Once installed everything worked great however after numerous trips I've yet to need or use the slider backing up as I can turn 80+ degrees without ever hitting or coming close to the truck cab (towing 2018 Cougar Half Ton Series 5th wheel). Also the slider is very heavy (head 75 lbs + base 207 lbs = 282 lbs) to remove and install (takes two people or an overhead winch). Plus the overall hitch weight (head, base & UMS is 394 lbs) puts me very close to the GVWR once the truck & trailer is fully loaded hence in hindsight I probably should have gone with the fixed 5th wheel hitch (total just 318 lbs compared to 400 lbs) instead as it would have saved 81 lbs and costs $489 less but at least I have the option to slide it back if ever needed. 606485

I absolutely love my Companion hitch. It is the quietest hitch I have ever owned. It also has the the strongest and thickest jaws around the fifth wheel king pin I have ever owned. The slide is very easy to operate and even though it is quite heavy for a 69 year old man to take it out and put it in my truck I still would recommend it to anyone who needs a combo gooseneck and fifth wheel hitch set up. There is absolutely no slop or movement of the king pin in the jaws, unlike most other style fifth wheel hitches that I have owned in the past. In my opinion you would have to go way out on a limb to try and top this one. Dan seegmiller 495375

Still feel the same. This fifth wheel hitch is awesome. Totally love it and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a great hitch. The ordering process and assistance I received was top notch. Quick delivery as well.

The B and W Companion gooseneck and fifth wheel adapter works very nicely and when removed the pickup box has no additional brackets or hardware that get in the way of the load. The only reason I did not give it a full 5 stars is that it is too heavy to be removed by one person unless assisted by a lifting device. I use my portable cherry picker to lift it out of the receiver tube. Other than that small issue I am very happy with the product and would purchase it again. 479679

I have pulled my 34 foot 5th wheel over 7000, miles in the year that I have owned the Companion hitch and have had no issues. Being new to a 5th wheel I have nothing to compare it to, but I couldn’t imagine anything out performing this setup. I still appreciate the fact that when I pull the hitch out of the box of my truck there is nothing that interferes with any load that I haul, weather it is a load of lumber or landscaping mulch. Only down side is the overall weight of the hitch when I remove it alone, I do need a mobile cherry picker. Well worth the price and would recommend it to anyone.

Thanks for the feedback, we have had other customers tell us that they do some disassembly of the head from the base to help when removing their companion from the bed of their truck. It is still a daunting task, but eliminating some weight while trying to move it works a little better.

It’s an awesome hitch and easy to install. You will need a person to help you pick it up. The hitch is worth the money and is better built compared to other hitches I have seen. 714697

Great product. The sliding adapter allows for a trouble free parking experience. This is the smartest purchase I've made in a long time. Our fellow traveling family bought a fixed gooseneck hitch. Didn't work out so well. My buddy put a dimple in the upper left rear corner of his new 2017 F-250 due to lack of clearance with his fifth wheel. Broke out his back window too. A no-kidding $10,000 repair (aluminum pillar could not be repaired, required complete roof swap). He saw my sliding set up, bought one that week. He loves his too. I've even swapped the fifth wheel adapter to one of my other trucks. Would recommend this product to anyone. 679011

These rails can only be used with the Reese Elite Series hitches and not the B&W Companion Slider Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter, # BWRVK3400, which you referenced. We have several options for your 2012 Ford F-250 Super Duty 6-3/4 Foot Bed with Factory Rail Kit Fifth Wheel Hitch. Take a look at the link I have included which lists all of the sliding 5th wheel hitches...

  • Base Of B&W Companion Slider Will Not Reach Bed Floor
The B&W Companion Slider Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter part # BWRVK3400 is a direct fit for the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch part # BWGNRK1108 that you have on your 2008 Ford F-350, there is no adapter required nor available. If the socket post does not allow for the legs to sit on the bed floor then you just simply need to adjust the feet. If you are still having issues after adjusting the feet just let me know and I will reach out to B&W to see if...

  • Recommendation for Towing Fifth Wheel and Gooseneck Trailer with 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500HD
If you need to tow a fifth wheel and a gooseneck hitch trailer with your 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500HD and don't have any hitches installed yet your best option is the B and W Turnoverball setup part # BWGNRK1012 which is a confirmed fit for your truck. What's great about this hitch is that it's a gooseneck hitch when needed and then if you need to install a fifth wheel hitch all you need is the Companion hitch part # BWRVK3400 and you have a fifth wheel hitch to tow your trailer with.

  • Will Trailer Pin Box Hit Tailgate on 2015 Ram 2500 Short Bed with B&W Slider 5th Wheel Hitch
On a 2015 Ram 2500 with 6-1/2 foot bed there could be the potential contact between the tailgate and the trailer pin box. But most pin boxes angle up at the rear so they would be higher up than the top of the tailgate. If you had the really short bed, 5-1/2 feet, then the tailgate would have to come off.

  • Best Fifth Wheel Hitch Setup for 2013 Chevy Silverado 2500HD
I may be biased...but I'd say ordering your fifth wheel setup from etrailer.com would definitely be the best place. The best setup available for your truck would be the B and W Companion hitches as they are the best made and performing hitches availalble. For that you'd need the slider kit part # BWRVK3400 if you have a short bed so that you have turning clearance or if you have a long bed you'd want the fixed hitch version part # BWRVK3500 since you wouldn't need the slider's additional...

  • Difference of Part Numbers for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch
B&W re-designed the RVK3400 hitch with a little bit different styling and changed the part number to the RVK3405. Our part # BWRVK3400 is the RVK3405 but we just didn't change our part number.

  • Available Adapter to Tow 5th Wheel with Gooseneck Hitch in 2015 GMC Sierra 2500, 6-1/2 Foot Bed
There are some adapters that will allow you to tow your 5th wheel trailer with your gooseneck hitch while still leaving your toolbox installed on your truck, but unfortunately there are not any 5th wheel hitches that will fit in the 10 space between the gooseneck ball hole and the toolbox on your truck. To keep the toolbox installed while towing, you will want to use an adapter like the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-To-Gooseneck Adapter with Offset # CAB-C5GX1216. This adapter will...

  • How B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch Installs into Turnover Ball Gooseneck Hitch
If your truck currently has a B&W Turnover Ball Gooseneck Hitch, you would indeed place the hitch in the truck bed, and latch the hitch into place. You might need to make some minor adjustments to the strips on the underside of the base that sit in the bed corrugations and adjust the draw-down bolt to get it aligned with the gooseneck hitch latch, but that's all you'd need to do. If you click the provided link, you can see the installation/assembly instructions for the # BWRVK3400.

  • Is Socket Post of B and W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch Adjustable
The B and W Turnoverball hitches have an adjustment built into them to allow for varying heights. If you check out the picture I attached you'll see that you the socket post is adjustable to allow it to fit your setup. It's also in the install instructions link I attached as well.

  • Difference Between B&W Companion Slider Hitch BWRVK3400 and BWRVK3400-5W
There is no difference at all between the B and W Companion hitch part # BWRVK3400 and the # BWRVK3400-5W. We use the -5W at the end of the part number to allow the hitch to show up in two different fitguides. One for the gooseneck fitguide and then one for the fifth wheel fitguide. The Companion setups are considered by many to be the nicest fifth wheel hitch around. The Companion slider is going to be a much better option than using an adapter to use the stationary Pro Series hitch.

  • Can a Single Attachment Point B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch be Used with a Sidewinder Pin Box
You actually shouldn't be using a B&W Companion hitch with a Sidewinder at all. The problem is because of the single attachment point and the force applied to the hitch from the Sidewinder it could cause the gooseneck hitch under the bed to get damaged or even break free causing the whole assembly, including the Companion, to rotate. The only difference between the regular Companion and slider is that the slider can slide back to allow more clearance between the truck and trailer when...

  • 2013 Silverado 2500 HD With 6-1/2 Foot Bed Recommendations For 5th Wheel Clearance
For your 2013 Silverado 2500HD with B&W Turnoverball, there is no simple solution unless you want to have a good quality but basic "non-automatic" sliding hitch like # BWRVK3400. This will require getting in and out of your truck to adjust the slide for turning, but is compatible with your current gooseneck hitch. Your two other options will require removing your gooseneck hitch and installing 5th wheel rails, because of the torque issues you stated in either case with the other options....

  • Recommended 10-Inch Lube Plates for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch BWRVK3400
For the excellent B&W Companion Gooseneck to 5th Wheel Hitch Adapter # BWRVK3400 I recommend using a 10 inch diameter lube plate. We have the Reese Lube Plate # RP83002 which is my top choice and also the Curt 10 inch Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Lube Plate # 16721. Both will work nicely with your Companion hitch. B&W recommends the use of a lube plate so we also recommend it. Your hitch will stay a lot cleaner and you will still get good performance without grease.

  • Troubleshooting Difficulty Operating Slider on B&W Companion Slider 5th Wheel Hitch
I spoke with my contact at B&W regarding your Companion Slider 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3400. He did say that it sounds like the rollers are just a bit too tight on your hitch. He recommends backing off on the rollers just about 1/4 of a turn and this should help ease the sliding operation. You can also apply some white lithium grease like # L11350 on the rails and he said this will help as well.

  • How to Tow a Fifth Wheel Trailer with a 2012 Ram 2500 Short Bed with B and W Turnover Ball
Since you have a short bed truck that has a B and W gooseneck hitch installed in it the best solution I can give you would be to go with a Companion Slider Hitch part # BWRVK3400. However, since you said you are looking for the most economical option and you have a slider Husky hitch already a better solution for you would be the Curt X5 Fifth Wheel Adapter # 16310 that is designed to fit the B and W Gooseneck hitches and provide a set of industry standard rails for a fifth wheel hitch...

There is not a square shank adapter for the B-W Companion Sliding Hitch # BWRVK3400 for any other underbed gooseneck system. It is only compatible with the B&W gooseneck system. You may be able to use the Curt X5 5th Wheel Base Rails Adapter for Curt Double Lock Gooseneck Trailer Hitches - 20,000 lbs # C16210 although this is not a confirmed fit.
