Fifth-Wheel Towing with Your Gooseneck Hitch

There are a variety of adapters on the market that let you tow a fifth-wheel trailer with a gooseneck hitch. You can use a coupler adapter that replaces the pin box on your fifth-wheel trailer and then attaches to the gooseneck hitch in your truck bed. But these adapters often require modifications to your trailer that can void the warranty. Another option would be using fifth-wheel rails that mount directly to your gooseneck hitch, usually by dropping into the hitch's ball hole. But to do this you have to make 2 separate purchases - the adapter plate that has the rails and a standard fifth-wheel hitch.

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Installation of the B&W Companion

To install the Companion, position the slider base so that the post inserts into your Turnoverball hitch's ball hole (in place of the hitch ball). Secure the post using the handle of the Turnoverball, just as you would secure the hitch ball. The post is square like the base of your gooseneck hitch ball. This square design helps to eliminate any twisting or turning of the post - and therefore the mounted fifth-wheel hitch - in your gooseneck hitch.

The next step is to set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance. To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

Video Transcript for B and W Companion Slider Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the B&W Companion Slider Gooseneck to Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter, offering the dual jowls and a 20,000 pound capacity. The part number is BWRVK3400.The B&W Companion Fifth Wheel hitch is going to be the perfect solution to have really the best of both worlds. This is designed to work with the B&W Gooseneck, so when not in use we can have a completely empty and open bed. If we want to haul a gooseneck trailer, we can flip that ball over, be able to connect to that. In the need that we need to haul our fifth wheel camper, this is easily going to slide in and it bolts right down to that underbed gooseneck that you've already got installed. The biggest advantage I see to this particular type of a slider versus other ones available out there on the market is just the way it's going to arrive to you. When you get it, your base is going to be completely assembled.

You'll have to make a few adjustments just on the polyurethane keepers that run down the bottom, but everything is square from the factory. That means when we go from the locked to the unlocked position, you'll see it takes little to no effort to get this moving. As compared to other setups that your base isn't going to come already assembled and already squared up can really be a struggle to get everything in line to where it actually will move freely, and even then, sometimes it requires the camper to move it.Now, if you're looking at a slider setup, it's probably because you have a situation similar to this. You've got a short bed truck and you're worried about the camper making contact with the cab. It's a very real concern, it happens quite a bit.

That's why these are around. With the companion, you can see that gives us a full 12 inches of travel. That's some of the longest travel you're going to get out of any type of slider hitch, really helps to move that camper further back from the rear of the vehicle, reducing the risk of any cab-camper contact.Another thing I really like about the companion system is the lever to operate the slider. You can see it sticks up here nice and high. It's going to be easily accessible, even if you're outside of the truck.

You lift that up into that unlocked position, and then from that point, once you pull away from your camper, once it gets into the locked position our arm's automatically going to come down. We have no pins, no release mechanisms to the lever or anything like that. It's a really good, simple system to use. You'll see coming forward, it's going to work just the same way.The handle's also nice and long. Again, easily accessible from outside the vehicle.

You do have a pin and clip here to secure it in place. That can also be replaced with a lock with a 1/4 inch diameter. You can pass that down through there, so if you don't want the pin, you can lock your camper to your companion. That just is going to slide forward opening those jaws up, and in the open position we'll take our mock king pin here, you can see that's going to slide in place, and with a little bit of force that'll bring our lever right back to the closed position. That has us nice and secure. You'll see, that has the 360 fit, so we're not just grabbing it on the backside, which can eventually just leave the flat spotting of your king pin. It's going to hold it all the way around; front, back, and side to side. With that limited movement, that's really going to help reduce some of that chucking and some of the trailer effects that you feel in your truck. You're going to see that on some of the lesser quality fifth wheels on the market. Now, in the maneuvering position or the rearward position, this is just going to be for your slow speed stuff. You certainly don't want to travel down the highway with it slid back. To travel, we're going to slide it forward, but with the ease of access to the slider I think you're going to be a lot more likely to actually move it back so you can get your maneuvering done, rather than having to go through several steps to get it to slide back, which you might not want to do.Now, the head of our gooseneck is also going to be fully articulating, so like most goosenecks, it has the tip front and back. That side to side is really key for when you're trying to hook up or unhook from your camper on uneven surfaces. If you get a little bit of a pitch one side or the other, those lower quality fifth wheels don't really like to release or accept that king pin. Now, the companion's going to offer heavy duty steel construction made right here in the United States. They've got the unique gray powder coat finish, really helps it stand out from a lot of the competitors out there in the market. With that heavy duty construction, we're going to get a 20,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. It's going to be the maximum weight that we'd want to haul. It's going to give us a 5,000 pound king pin weight, so that's the maximum downward force we can put on top of our hitch. Of course, you do want to check your truck's owner's manual, make sure it's capable of those types of weights. If not, just go off whichever numbers are the lowest. Now, when comparing this slider to other sliders out there on the market, I think the quality in construction is very, very high. Not saying the other sliders aren't made well, I just like the way this one comes and the way it's put together. The way this thing slides forward and back really alleviates a lot of headaches. I like the quality in material, but with that being said, heavy duty material means that it's going to be pretty heavy, so this is going to take two guys, probably, to get it in and out of the truck.I like the square pin design that we have out of the companion. When that square peg goes down into that gooseneck socket, it prevents any of the turning. Now, when comparing that to some of the competitors that have the round peg, movement could be a little bit more of an issue. This is also going to have the greatest travel of any of the sliders out there in the market. You'll see the polyurethane strips in conjunction with that square peg we talked about, going to be pressed firmly down against the bed of the truck, again, resisting any rotation. Now, going with a slider style like the companion, or really any of its competitors, it's a pretty expensive decision to make. Based on the use that we've had here and the customer response that we've had on this setup, it's well worth the investment. Its ease of use really compliments driving and trailering, makes it a little bit easier on you so you're not in and out of the truck bed near as often. Now, to connect the companion to your gooseneck, you're going to see the oblong hole here, and inside we have a retainer. We're going to place that right down in the hole for the shank of our gooseneck ball, place the pin through just by releasing our handle, and then as we tighten the bolt on the top, you'll see how that's going to draw that up and it's going to pull the companion firmly down against the bed of the vehicle. Now, as we tighten down that bolt, you can see our full length strips here that are designed to fit down in the corrugation of the truck. That's going to prevent any twisting or any movement as we travel. Now, with the help of an extra set of hands we can get our companion put down in position. Remember, we're going to place our square peg here, right down in the hole for our gooseneck ball. Now, once we have the companion in place and squared up, we want to take that polyurethane inaudible 00:07:10 we'll want to slide it, you can see right over against the rib of the truck, want to make sure it stays fully seated down in the bottom. Once we have that done on the front and the back, use a 7/16 and tighten down our bolts. Once we have our polyurethane strips tightened down, we'll release the pin allowing that 5/8 pin to come in through the catch, and then it's just a matter of torquing it down to the specifications listed.Another nice feature the companion offers is full adjustability up and down. We can go from 17, 18, or 19 inches of pin height, and we can adjust forward and back. By placing our arms in this position, kind of with the angle going forward, that's going to put us about 1 inch ahead of our post or our securing mechanism. By putting these in the other way, we're going to be about 3 inches behind. Since this is a short bed application, we're going to set it up so that we're going to have a little extra room between the cab and the camper. For the lowest setting we'll use the bottom and middle hole. The middle setting, we'll use the second from the bottom and second from the top. Our highest settings, we use the top hole and the third one down. You'll use the 1/2 inch by 2 inch bolt, want to slip the ring lock washer on there, slide it through the hole, and thread it in position. Now we're going to use four bolts for each arm. We can torque all four of these down to the specifications listed in the instructions. Now, once we have our arms in place, we'll put on our leveling kit. Now, the leveling kit's just going to be a spring. We'll fit that right to our arm using the pressure clip. We want that to be set at the top of our spring, about a 1/2 inch below the bottom of our rubber there. Typically you just use a hammer and kind of get it started, knocked on there. With that, looks like it crept down a little bit, so we'll just kind of tap it up. There, that should be good. Now, the spring's going to rest right up against the head, so even when not in use it's going to help hold that head level, so if you need to connect to your trailer you won't have to worry about your head being tilted the wrong direction. Now, on top of each of our arms you'll see we have polyurethane bushings. As our head sits on there and rotates forward and back, we're not going to have to worry about noise. This is also going to soften the impact of our camper against our truck. Now, for our head, you want to lift up on the two handles with the pins removed, and we'll place that right down and over. You're going to wiggle that down in position until you see your arms drop down, just like that, indicating that you're secure. We'll slide our pins through, those will be secured with our provided clips. Now, the last thing we'll need to do is just get our handle installed. To do that, we'll just remove our pin and clip here, slide our handle in. It's going to align with the two holes furthest in. We'll place through one of our button head bolts there, locking flange nut on the other side. Get those started, then tighten down. For the top here, we'll use a 7/32, the bottom a 9/16. Pin and clip back in there, the handle allows us to easily open the dual jaws. Then as the king pin enters, it's going to press the lever right here on the front, helping to close it. That's going to complete our look at the B&W Companion Fifth Wheel Slider.

B&W Companion Slider Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs - BWRVK3400

Average Customer Rating:  4.9 out of 5 stars   (17 Customer Reviews)

Quickly and easily convert your B&W Turnoverball gooseneck hitch to a sturdy 5th-wheel trailer hitch. Built-in slider helps eliminate clearance concerns during slow-speed turns. Dual-jaw hitch removes without a trace for full bed access.

I absolutely love my Companion hitch. It is the quietest hitch I have ever owned. It also has the the strongest and thickest jaws around the fifth wheel king pin I have ever owned. The slide is very easy to operate and even though it is quite heavy for a 69 year old man to take it out and put it in my truck I still would recommend it to anyone who needs a combo gooseneck and fifth wheel hitch set up. There is absolutely no slop or movement of the king pin in the jaws, unlike most other style fifth wheel hitches that I have owned in the past. In my opinion you would have to go way out on a limb to try and top this one. Dan seegmiller 495375

Still feel the same. This fifth wheel hitch is awesome. Totally love it and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a great hitch. The ordering process and assistance I received was top notch. Quick delivery as well.

The B and W Companion gooseneck and fifth wheel adapter works very nicely and when removed the pickup box has no additional brackets or hardware that get in the way of the load. The only reason I did not give it a full 5 stars is that it is too heavy to be removed by one person unless assisted by a lifting device. I use my portable cherry picker to lift it out of the receiver tube. Other than that small issue I am very happy with the product and would purchase it again. 479679

I have pulled my 34 foot 5th wheel over 7000, miles in the year that I have owned the Companion hitch and have had no issues. Being new to a 5th wheel I have nothing to compare it to, but I couldn’t imagine anything out performing this setup. I still appreciate the fact that when I pull the hitch out of the box of my truck there is nothing that interferes with any load that I haul, weather it is a load of lumber or landscaping mulch. Only down side is the overall weight of the hitch when I remove it alone, I do need a mobile cherry picker. Well worth the price and would recommend it to anyone.

Thanks for the feedback, we have had other customers tell us that they do some disassembly of the head from the base to help when removing their companion from the bed of their truck. It is still a daunting task, but eliminating some weight while trying to move it works a little better.

I purchased the B&W 20K Companion Slider & Underbed Mount System (UMS) for my 2015 Ford F150 extended cab (with 6 foot bed) over a year ago because it was the only solution that was removable. Construction and finish was very nice and still looks great. Installation wasn't too difficult but the 4” hole in the bed needs to be exact otherwise getting it square will be very difficult. Overall the slider works great but must be mounted directly on the bed and cannot be mounted over a plastic bed liner. Once installed everything worked great however after numerous trips I've yet to need or use the slider backing up as I can turn 80+ degrees without ever hitting or coming close to the truck cab (towing 2018 Cougar Half Ton Series 5th wheel). Also the slider is very heavy (head 75 lbs + base 207 lbs = 282 lbs) to remove and install (takes two people or an overhead winch). Plus the overall hitch weight (head, base & UMS is 394 lbs) puts me very close to the GVWR once the truck & trailer is fully loaded hence in hindsight I probably should have gone with the fixed 5th wheel hitch (total just 318 lbs compared to 400 lbs) instead as it would have saved 81 lbs and costs $489 less but at least I have the option to slide it back if ever needed. 606485

Takes some time to install but overall a fairly easy install. Allows you to have full use of bed when not pulling your trailer. 450758

Fantastic, quiet, no bangs or noises. Only issue is that it is so heavy, I need help removing it when I need to use the truck bed. Have used the gooseneck ball to move my buddies horse trailer, no issues either. 274039

I have loved this hitch. The ordering process was easy and it was shipped immediately. Installation was easy and took me about 1 hour. we have used this hitch to pull our 31 foot fifth wheel trailer over the last year and have had absolutely no problems. I would recommend this hitch to anyone. 311055

We offer a lift bracket, part # DM6100
Demco 5th Wheel Lifting Bracket
that you might be interested in. The bracket locks into the hitch like a king pin would and offers a safe lifting point that wont damage the hitch.

  • Difference Between B&W Companion Slider Hitch BWRVK3400 and BWRVK3400-5W
  • There is no difference at all between the B and W Companion hitch part # BWRVK3400 and the # BWRVK3400-5W. We use the -5W at the end of the part number to allow the hitch to show up in two different fitguides. One for the gooseneck fitguide and then one for the fifth wheel fitguide. The Companion setups are considered by many to be the nicest fifth wheel hitch around. The Companion slider is going to be a much better option than using an adapter to use the stationary Pro Series hitch.

  • The B&W Companion Slider Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter # BWRVK3400 that you referenced weighs 280 lbs. The hitch does pretty easily come apart to make taking it out of the bed of your truck a bit easier. We also have a truck bed crane part # MT70238 which will fit the hitch of your truck and allow you an easier way to get the hitch in and out of the truck. You'll need the part # DM6100 too. This fits in the jaws of the hitch and gives an anchor point for the crane to grab...

  • We can help you select a rear-axle air bag kit for your 2018 Ford F-150 4x4 crew cab with 6-1/2-foot bed that will be compatible with an in-bed hitch such as a B&W gooseneck. The gooseneck hitch from B&W that fits your truck is kit # BWGNRK1115. This kit includes frame brackets that do not require drilling. And if you ever need to tow a 5th wheel all you need to add is the B&W Companion Slider hitch # BWRVK3400. For an in-bed 7-way harness use part # 50-97-410-010 from Bargman. For...

  • Does B and W Patriot and Companion Hitch Head Fit Same Hitch Base
  • The Patriot head is different from the Companion head. I wish I could tell you they were interchangeable but they are not. You'd have to upgrade to a slider Companion hitch like part # BWRVK3400 if your plan is to install a Companion slider hitch in the bed of a truck with a B and W gooseneck hitch.

  • B and W Companion Hitch Recommendation for 2014 Chevy Silverado 2500 Short Bed
  • Since you have a short bed truck you'll need the Slider Companion hitch part # BWRVK3400 which fit fit the B and W Turnoverball hitch you have in the bed of your truck. The reason you need the slider hitch is so that the hitch and trailer can move back and allow you to make tight turns.

  • Underbed Fifth Wheel Rail Kit Recommendation for 2018 Ford F-250
  • Reese does not offer an Elite rail kit for the versions of your 2018 Ford F-250 that does not have the factory rail kit. Only way to get the Reese/Ford underbed rails would be through a Ford dealer. Otherwise for a great underbed solution the B and W Turnoverball rail kit part # BWGNRK1117 with the Companion Hitch part # BWRVK3500 would be a great solution that rivals the Reese Elite setups. Many prefer the Companion over it as well. If instead you have a short bed truck you'll need...

  • B&W Companion Hitch and Head Position Recommendation for 2017 Ram 3500 Towing Trailer w Sidewinder
  • If the trailer sits nose high currently then you'd want to go with the lower height setting for the head of the B and W Companion for Ram OEM rail kit # BWRVK3670 to help allow the trailer to sit level. Since you have a Sidewinder pin box you really don't need a slider hitch since the Sidewinder is designed to provide the additional clearance. So instead the hitch you'd want is the part # BWRVK3600. If you already have the Slider Companion you can still use it but you have to leave it in...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch Rail Compatibility with B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch
  • The B&W Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # BWRVK2400 is not compatible with an already installed Turnoverball gooseneck hitch. The underbed gooseneck systems will mount in the exact same location to your frame rails, so you cannot have both systems installed. If you already have another 5th wheel hitch that uses industry standard base rails, then you can use the Demco 5th Wheel Base Rails Adapter for B&W Turnoverball # DM6140 or Curt X5 # 16310. An...

  • Best Fifth Wheel Towing Solution Recommendation for 2017 Ford F-350 with B and W Gooseneck Hitch
  • Sounds like you have a fifth wheel to gooseneck adapter installed on your trailer like the Convert A Ball # CAB-C5G. While these adapters typically work great for people (we've yet to hear of an issue), the trailer manufacturers don't like these adapters at all and will say they put undue stress on the trailer frame therefore voiding the warranty. Since you have a short bed truck and a B and W Turnoverball gooseneck your best option is to take off the adapter leaving you with a standard...

  • How to Determine if Companion Slider Hitch Will Fit in Truck Bed with Toolbox
  • The problem is the Flatbed Fifth Wheel Hitch part # BWRVK3050 has a shank that will be too tall to allow the hitch to rest on the bed of the truck since flat bed goosenecks are recessed and even if the hitch would fit the bed the head height would be way too low to allow the trailer to be towed level. How wide is your toolbox? Do you have any type of hitch installed in the bed of the truck? If it's a Turnoverball gooseneck hitch how much distance is between the gooseneck ball opening...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Options for 2018 Ford F-250 with Gooseneck Hitch
  • If the gooseneck hitch you have in the bed of your 2018 Ford F-250 is a B and W hitch then the correct fifth wheel hitch you'd need is the Companion part # BWRVK3500 if you have a long bed. This fits the gooseneck hitch ball and gives you a fifth wheel hitch that will work well for you. If instead you have a short bed and need a slider hitch for turning clearance you'd want the part # BWRVK3400. If instead you see 4 pucks around the gooseneck ball that look like they were meant to have...

Since you have the long bed you will not need to use the sliding feature of the Companion so you can leave it in the locked position. Sliding 5th wheel hitches are recommended for trucks that have bed under 8 feet so that they will not hit the cab during tight turns....

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for a 2019 Ram 1500 6-1/2 Bed with the New Body
  • Yes, we do have a few different 5th wheel hitch options for your 2019 Ram 1500 with the 6-1/2' bed. Out of the options I highly recommend the B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3400 because it easily installs in the Custom Underbed Installation Kit # BWGNRK1319-5W, which doubles as a gooseneck hitch and gives you a completely clean bed when you aren't towing. This 5th wheel hitch features dual 1" jaws that do an extremely good job of keeping the king pin stable to reduce chucking (back and...
