Question:
specifically, I’m interested in this hitch: B and W Slider Companion. It seems like a slider is the best option because I “should” be able to tow any 5th wheel with any box correct? It sounds like I generally have two options: slider hitch: tow any trailer regardless of pinbox. Fixed hitch: limited to danger while towing with a short box OR have to have a sidewinder or equivalent.

For your 2017 Ram 3500 6-1/2 Foot Bed without Factory Rail Kit you'll need a slider hitch to allow you to make tight turns without cab interference.
My favorite slider hitches are the ones that automatically slide as you make tight turns as that saves you the hassle of getting out and activating the slider every time it's needed. For that I would recommend the Demco Hijacker part # DM8550037 and the install rail kit part # DM8551006. This is an underbed rail kit too which means when you take the hitch out your truck bed wouldn't have any large rails sitting there.
Then for a roll up tonneau that would work well on your truck and with this hitch we have the BAK Revolver X2 Hard Tonneau Cover # BAK39213.
