Secure, 2-Piece, Serrated Jaw

Serrated Jaw of the Reese R16

The dual-jaw system on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch ensures full 360-degree contact around your trailer's king pin for a strong, reliable connection. Unlike traditional spring-loaded, dual-jaw systems, the R16 features serrated jaws for maximum security. The geared teeth ensure that every time you use this hitch, the jaws will close evenly to form a perfect circle around your trailer's king pin, providing a consistently tight connection. By surrounding the king pin entirely - with direct jaw-to-king-pin contact - the R16 allows far less movement in the hitch than other fifth-wheel hitches, resulting in minimal jarring and chucking.

Quiet, Comfortable Ride

Vibration Dampener of the Reese R16

The R16 offers several unique features that help to create a smooth, quiet fifth-wheel towing experience. Aside from the two-piece jaw that offers a firm and secure connection, stability is also increased by having wide-stance, arched legs and a pivot beam with a wide front-to-back mounting configuration. The pivot beam also has a built-in vibration-isolator system that dampens both vertical and longitudinal vibration, the result of which is less noise and a better ride.

Locking Handle and King Pin Indicator

Reese R16 king pin indicator

The R16 features an easy-to-use locking handle with a built-in visual indicator to ensure proper hookup. When the trailer's king pin is in position within the jaws of the hitch, a green indicator button is visible on the back of the fifth-wheel head. This button can be easily seen from the cab of your truck.

Strength and Durability

The R16 was designed with strength and durability in mind. Sturdy steel and various hardened, cast components make up this fifth-wheel trailer hitch that, despite its weight rating, offers commercial-grade towing strength. Extensive testing demonstrated that the R16 is compliant with the criteria (SAE J2638) set forth by the Society of Automotive Engineers for fifth-wheel trailer hitch performance. In addition, this fifth-wheel trailer hitch passed 900,000 cycles in both fatigue and static testing, attesting to its durability.

To increase the lasting effectiveness of your hitch, you can add either a 10-inch or 12-inch lube plate (sold separately). A lube plate provides a smooth surface to help the king pin glide smoothly into the hitch during hookup. It also helps to prevent scratches on the R16's top plate. Grease pockets are integrated into the R16 fifth-wheel trailer hitch so that you can easily maintain the effectiveness of the lube plate. In addition, the hitch head on the R16 has a built-in zerk fitting that allows you to easily lubricate the jaw to keep it operating at its best. White lithium grease is recommended for this purpose.

Video Transcript for Reese Fifth Wheel RP30866 Review

Today were going to review part number RP30866. This is the Reese R16 fifth wheel trailer hitch on the fixed legs. This fifth wheel hitch will mount in your truck bed so you can tow your fifth wheel trailer. It does have the cast dual jaw system. Right here are the two jaws which will provide more jaw to kingpin contact than your traditional dual jaw hitches. Were going to open them up to show you.

You can see them opening. If you notice right down here it does have the geared teeth which will ensure even, secure closure for a full 360 degree contact of the kingpin. That secure connection means minimal jarring and chucking. Basically, if you open that up all the way you can see the gears teeth right there. If youll also notice theres a green lever right in here.

Basically what that is is when the kingpin slides in here let me let the jaws close right now its in the unlock position. What that means is as you back up your kingpin would push these jaws open and slide in, and once it slides in the jaws would wrap around the kingpin. The kingpin would be positioned in there enough that it would push that green lever that I was showing you. What that does, that would give you an indication youll notice here on the back right here, if youll notice when I push in, when that kingpins installed properly it will push that lever which will pop out this indicator. This is a visible indicator that you will be able to see from the cab of your truck.

If youre backing up and you turn around and look and that pops out, that means the kingpin is securely fastened in your hitch. Once you have the kingpin in there, all you would need to do is push this handle down and that will lock the jaws and keep them from opening. Again, Ill show you on the handle. This locking handle has a nice ergonomic grip for easy and proper hookup. If youll notice theres a color coding.

The red points up, which means its on lock position. The jaws would open. Once the kingpins in there and youre ready to take off, you push that down. The green is lock position. That would keep the jaws from opening. If youll notice theres a little tab here with a hole in it, and theres a tab on the head with a hole in it. When you push that down, those holes would line up and you can put a pin and clip through there, or you could even put a padlock for additional security, if you want. The padlock would be sold separately. I do want to describe the head. Its a cast head. Its a four-way pivoting head. If you can see, it goes front to back and it will also go side to side. Theres a five degree side to side pivot. You have a full four-way pivoting head that will help ease the hookup even on unlevel ground. These fixed legs, as you notice, are wide, both this way and that way. It gives a nice, wide stance which will provide excellent stability. Also on this head, if youll notice, theres pockets in there, and thats for grease to go in so you can actually have grease on the head to lube it. Another nice feature is if youll look at this blue part right here, this is actually called the cast pivot beam. What that does is it pretty much rides on this cross member. It would just set down on over two extensions and then these pins would go in underneath it to lock it into place. That would give you the pivoting head. A nice feature on this head and pivot beam, Ill show you again to the side. If youll notice these big yellow circles, thats actually a very hard rubber, and thats a heavy duty vibration dampener. What that does is theres one over here and one over here on the bolts that hold the head to the pivot beam. It will minimize your rattle and noise of the head, those vibration dampeners would. Also another feature, the head and pivot beam can be offset one inch front or rear one inch. Basically, if you can see it, the head is pretty much this wide, and as you can see this actually sits back about one inch, so its offset one inch this way. Basically that would help improve the cab clearance between your truck and the trailer with that offset. You can switch it around if you need the offset going the other way. You can actually take the head off of the pivot beam, rotate the pivot beam and put the head back on and you would actually move it one inch that way, so you could go either way front or rear with that one inch offset. I did mention the lockable handle. This hitch is a sturdy steel construction. It has a black powder coat finish which is corrosion resistant. For this demonstration I actually have it installed on the base rails with the mounting brackets, but they are sold separately. They are not included with this part number. You would have to buy them for your correct application, and on the mounting brackets which install on the side here to your truck frame, we do recommend if its possible or available for your vehicle that you use the custom install mounting brackets. The reason that is, its a lot easier installation when youre comparing it to the universal applications. The custom install takes about half the time as the universal, and it uses existing holes in your truck frame. This hitch will work with your industry standard above-bed rails made by Curt, Draw Tite, Hidden Hitch, Pro Series, Reese and Valley. A few specs on this, the gross towing weight capacity is 16,000 pounds. The vertical load limit or the pin weight is 4,000 pounds. It does have a hitch height adjustment of 14 to 18 inches. Ill show you that. If I rotate it here, youll probably be able to see. Theres four sets of holes on this cross member on each side. Basically when you bolt this cross member to the fixed legs, if you put it in the very top holes that would give you the lowest hitch height, which would be 14 inches above your truck be. If you moved it to the very bottom, which would be the highest, it would give you 18 inches. Theres a four inch variance from the top holes to the bottom holes. You can adjust your hitch height above your truck bed from 14 to 18 inches. This part does come with a limited lifetime warranty. Just real quick again, I want to show you right now its in the locked position. If you push it up and unlock it you can pull it open. See the jaws open, the kingpin indicator right in there closed, and in the locked position. That should do it for review on part number RP30866.

I ordered this hitch with the Ford F250 install kit. No problems installing it in my longbed 2015 F250. Measurements in instructions were "spot on" 4 packages arrived by UPS & all were intact. Nothing scratched, broken, or missing. Looks like Ford relocated the bracket for the tubing that previously had to be moved, so it is no longer in the way. The kit included conical washers, and spacers, & the drawing showed which was used with which kit, but it would have saved me a few minutes if it had been mentioned in the written instructions. Erica was very helpful with my order, Thanks Erica. If you can read a ruler, follow instructions, and drill a hole, you shouldn't have any problem installing this kit. 182004

In the past year Ive towed my 5th wheel trailer over 7000 miles. The Hitch is still working flawlessly. Highly recommend it.

Great Hitch!!! I purchased this product for my 2012 Chevy Silverado 2500HD with 8' bed. Instructions were very easy to follow. Everything looks to be of good quality. I use the Reese base rail kit RP56001-53 and it fit perfectly. It took me about 3 hours to install everything and to trim the bedliner. Took it out for a test run pulling my 5th wheel trailer that weighs about 7500lbs. Smooth is all i have to say. Just like everyone else says you will need some tools and a heavy torque wrench to do this job. Only negative thing that i have to say is that it took 2 full weeks to get everything delivered to do the installation. I would have to give etrailer a 3.8 stars for their service. 399727

This is a "One year follow up" but we've actually owned and used the R16 hitch for four years. The hitch works great. We've towed our 5 ton camper approximately 10,000 miles with this hitch. This jaws on this hitch are too thick to use a plastic lube plate so I use grease. Reese may have addressed this issue by now. I don't consider it a major problem. While some people prefer a lube plate, it was beginning to drive me nuts on a previous hitch because they often fall off the fifth wheel king pin while hitching to the truck. We had one area of concern. After three years and about 7,500 miles of towing I noticed the yellow, rubber pivot bushings wearing out. An internet search revealed Reese was replacing these with improved bushings at no charge to customer. I contacted etrailer and they shipped the new rubber bushing kit to me immediately. Replacing the bushings was easy and they have held up well. 406953

After a LOT of research, I decided on this fifth wheel hitch and now that it's installed, I am NOT disappointed at all!! Great hitch, great prices from etrailer, & great shipping service!!! I saved about 35% buying from etrailer vs. my local dealer. 328985

I took delivery of the 3 boxes from UPS this noon. Will load them up and take to the installer in a week. Will let them open the boxes which were in good to excellent condition considering the amount of weight they contained. Had to "walk" the heavy one into my garage/workshop & carry the other two. Will be installed in an '011 3/4 ton Silverado w/ 8 foot box, 2 wheel drive. Will be taking delivery of an '015 26' Canyon Trail in March. Chose this Reese hitch because of the cushioning isolators and wrap-around geared jaws. 338161

Excellent hitch. Bought it to use with a Sidewinder pin box. Had to learn to raise the pin box slightly off the hitch when unhitching to get it to unlatch. The little green light indicator just saved me a major disaster a couple days ago. I would recommend this hitch. The only reason it has 4 stars instead of 5 is that I had to fabricate a small brass shim to take up the slop between the base and the head casting. Without the shim there's a noticeable clunk on acceleration and deceleration. 262088

Replaced an older Reese with the new Titan. Expected that there would be a significant reduction in 'chucking'. Some, yes, significant, no. Still an improvement over the older jaw design. Dropped right in to the existing rails. Actually went in better than the old one. I was disappointed that the tab on the handle did not align with the plate hole for locking. Had to drill through both to get an aligned hole. A QC issue for Reese. e-trailer has been excellent to work with. Will shop again. 259513

Did setup of the fifth wheel hitch in about 1 hour. Based on information provided and checking on other product reviews all of the hitch figures worked out and hitch hooked up with no issues. had to read instructions a little closer to make sure everything was correct when I disconnected. I also added the correct spacer block that was recommended for the hitch. The universal block did not fit as well as the recommended one that is used with a revolution rotating turret. so far so good. 264797

Product shipped quickly-arrived 2nd day. Best part beside the attractively low price was FREE shipping and NO sales tax. I priced an identical hitch from a local RV store. $995 PLUS shipping to the store (est. 5-7 business days) PLUS 8.25% sales tax. And these Mom/Pop outfits wonder why they're going broke. Reese hitch is high quality, and installed on my existing above-bed rails. Everything fit perfectly. Heavy sucker, but Grandma and I (both seventy-three) got 'er done. 430518

I ordered this hitch because of its versatility and adjustablity of height and the fact that it can be taken out of the bed of the pickup in two manageable parts. Not to heavy for an almost 70 year old man. I am going to pull a 2015 Rockwood fifth wheel. I am a long time motorhome driver pulling a flat towed vehicle but a first time 5th wheel owner. Goose neck and bumper pull trailer experience will help I am sure but ready for a new experience with the 5th wheel. 371617

This is my first fifth wheel hitch to pull my first fifth wheel trailer so I don’t have anything to compare it to performance wise. But I can attest how nice it is to put in and take out of the bed of my truck. One of my hunting buddies has a fifth wheel trailer and his hitch is miserable to move in and out of his truck, and that is with 2 guys moving it. So nothing but praise so far! 178595

Service from this company as usual was excellent. They are good communicators to keep you informed. The reason I bought this was because my one year old hitch always sounded like it was falling apart with lots of cluncks and chugs when starting and stopping. Using the same rails, this one is almost silent. I am very happy with my purchase. 53651

Everything came as advertised, packaged well so it arrived with no damage, installed in 2 hours. Highly recommend. Pulled with it for the first time and it hooked up well. Like the green button that says it is hooked in properly. Had to align the holes that you install a pin or a lock with a drill bit but no big deal. 180590

I replaced a 9 yr old hitch with the RP30866. It arrived via UPS in 2 days and all the parts were in two boxes. It assembled into the old rails of the truck bed. Would have only taken about 30 mins to assemble and install but I need to make a height adjustment after dry fitting the hitch. 176509

The hitch and supporting rails were fun to install. I went on line and found a video to watch which made the installation easier. One thing that is challenging is releasing the the hitch, it can be very stiff. At times I have to kick the level out to get the hitch to release. 286410

Review from a similar Reese R16 in Fifth Wheel

I purchased the fifth wheel with the mounting kit to fit my truck. Excellent product. Easy to assemble. Arrived quickly. I completed installation in under 4 hours Thursday night, and used it Friday to transport a camper with no trouble or issues. If you are planning on installing the mounting kit yourself, you will need a torque wrench capable of achieving 212 ft-lbs of torque, and some big muscles. I liked that I could track status of shipment in route easily from the link that was emailed to me. Had 2 minor issues neither was a big deal. I gave a score of excellent because the minor issues did not really affect me, but I am noting them because they may affect another purchaser. 1. The cardboard boxes that the unit shipped in were beat up badly from the handling during shipment. There were holes in 2 of the boxes, and the tubing for the handles were sticking out of the boxes. There were 2 missing parts from the mounting kit box. A 5/8 washer and one of the specialty 1/4 inch spacers that secures the brackets to the frame. This could have been a big deal, but I have washers, and I made a spacer in my shop to replace the missing one. I did not contact Etrailer for replacement parts because I needed to install the unit so it could be used the next day. My choice. 2. The instructions from the bracket kit led me to believe that I needed to drill 4 pilot holes in the bed for the rear bracket, when I needed to drill all five. This meant that I had to take the bracket back out to drill the center hole for the fifth bolt. It took me about 10 extra minutes to install the brackets than it should have. I felt the instructions were a little unclear on that step. Other than that the instructions were straight forward, simple and easy to follow. I would purchase this product again if I needed another wheel, and I would order from Etrailer again. 269731

Review from a similar Reese R16 in Fifth Wheel

RP30869 Reese 16K Titan hitch with round tube slider. Reese Titan 16K hitch with round tube slider was manufactured in China. Serious quality issues required first hitch be returned to Reese because it was not functional. Hitch could not freely rock fore-aft because of improper casting and machining. Mechanic assembling hitch to its saddle had to use hammer to assemble. Replacement hitch received from Reese with a missing grease fitting but no similar interferences limiting hitch movement. The hitch saddle rests on 1" diameter pins oriented fore-aft through the slider cross piece that allows hitch to rock left-right. As manufactured hitch can move vertically about 1/16" on 1" diameter pins and fore-aft 3/16". So when driving over a hard bump hitch slams up and down on the 1" pin clearance. When braking hitch moves forward until hitch saddle contacts cross bar on slider. Contact is on as-cast, not machined surface. Contact is only on left side. When accelerating hitch moves back until hitch saddle contacts forward side of cross bar on slider. Same issue with contact but now on right side indicating improper set-up for machining of saddle casting. Design concept is good but design execution and manufacturing are very poorly executed. I am considering modifying hitch and slider cross bar to eliminate excessive fore-aft slop (clearance). I have not come up with a solution to reduce the vertical movement. First hitch had to be returned to Reese because it was poorly manufactured and was not functional. Replacement hitch from Reese had missing grease fitting. Hole had been drilled but not tapped for zirc fitting. Because of quality issues I encountered I cannot recommend purchase of these Reese products. 254658

Review from a similar Reese R16 in Fifth Wheel

This has been a very good hitch except for one seriously flawed issue. We had just traversed I-20 across Louisiana and Mississippi then down to Mobil. I know those states pride themselves on low taxes and it shows. The roads are very poorly maintained but I didn't expect it to break my hitch. Arriving in Pensacola I was leveling my trailer while still connected to the truck. The slope was pulling up on the back of the truck but not that much. Snap on of the pivot pens sheared off. A No 8 tempered bolt is supposed to take 50,000 psi had just snapped off. Glad it didn't happened underway. Drilled it out and replaced only a 2 hour delay but Reese was like 'well did you check the torque that morning?' no sympathy or any sense of responsibility. The repair guy said it looked like a faulty bolt the way it sheared off - ok only a $35 repair but I didn't come away from my call with Reese feeling like they were concerned. Otherwise I think this hitch is very well built. It can be a little tricky to get it to lock - you have to make sure the trailer is at the right height and usually rock the truck slightly to get the lock to engage. Otherwise very nice. I did have to install a block and chain in my barn - this hitch is heavy to remove and install but very easy to do so. 239581

no issues since the pivot pen failure. I carry a spare pivot pen. The hitch does require you have the trailer aligned pretty close to perfect vertically to both attach and disconnect. Once i got the hang of it my hitching/unhitching time to under 5 minutes. I installed a chain hoist in my garage and when i want to remove the hitch I can just drive under it, disconnect the hitch and hoist it up, drive out from under it without having to lift it. Dont use the slider hardly ever but when I need it it is great to have.

Review from a similar Reese R16 in Fifth Wheel

This was my first 5th wheel. I have a F250 diesel with a 6 and 3/4 bed. When the hitch arrived it came in 4 or 5 boxes. We went to a home depot parking lot to put it on, in case we needed any other tools. Very simple to install. We were able to install this hitch with the custom brackets without even taking the tires off. Very easy, took about 3 hours, could have been faster you were to remove the tires-hard to tighten to the right foot pounds. All you need is a few sockets-some deep and some regular, 2" and 6" extension, a torque wrench, drill, drill bits and an extra set of hands if I remember correctly. Don't unlock the slider until it is in the rails. It is very hard to line the round tubes up to lock them in place or they will move around if not locked (Not really a problem, just aggravating to me). For my first hitch, everything was pretty easy. Etrailer was very helpful with install videos and customer service was excellent. All pros, no cons, and it looks good too. 159406

Your video showing installation steps was extremely helpful. Following receipt; on time as advertised the installation was performed without a hitch (no pun intended). All parts were received and function well. On comment, the electrical connector which was purchased to allow a seven point connection inside the bed of the truck did not plug in without difficulty. The female connector which was to mate with the male connector on the truck would not join until I removed the rubber weather seal at the bottom of the new connector. Once it was removed the parts mated just fine. I pickedup my new 5th wheel the day after installing the hitch and all components functioned perfectly. 223253

Review from a similar Reese R16 in Fifth Wheel

I ordered the Reese RP30869 along with the custom rail install kit for my 2014 Ford F250 Super Duty. The guys at Etrailer responded immediately to any question I had concerning my order, tracked it for me and attached instructional videos for installation. I am of average mechanical ability and after watching the 7 minute video a few times installed everything with a friend helping in less than 3 hours. The hardest part is removing the tires. It's pretty scary punching 10, 9/16ths holes through a brand new bed, but all the measurements provided were spot on. All needed hardware was included in sealed plastic bags. Very clean custom installation. 152746

There are very few times when we can say that we had a good experience buying on line. ETrailer was one of those times. I was very impressed with the service, knowledge and support I received with my recent purchase of a 5th wheel hitch. • Differences Between a Reese Sidewinder and Revolution on a 5th Wheel Trailer and 2012 Ford F-150
  • A Sidewinder and a Revolution are the same thing. It is called a Revolution when it comes as OEM equipment on a trailer. That is the only difference. To determine if the Revolution offers enough extra clearance for your truck and trailer, there are some measurements to look at. First, measure from the center of the hitch jaws to the back of the truck cab and add 22 inches (length of Revolution extension). Then, measure the width of the trailer overhang and divide by 2 to get half. If...
