Video Transcript for Trimming a Truck Bed Liner for Fifth Wheel Rails

Today we're going to cover a frequently asked question on how to cut out a bed liner for a fifth wheel installation. It's pretty easy, we'll measure for our crossrails just like normal and then we'll go ahead and mark out our bed liner. Measuring from the edge of the bed of the truck, not the bed liner, but the edge of the bed and measure out. We'll go do one side, we'll go to the other side and make a mark as well. Now those will be the marks that'll align our first rail way. We'll make sure that our rail is even from left to right.

We'll just use the ribs in the bed liner to align it with and then we'll just draw a circle all the way around the rails. Then next we'll go ahead and use the legs of the fifth wheel hitch to place our second rail and now this will put our rail basically in the right stop and we'll just draw an outline around it as well and then the next step is go ahead and remove the parts for the fifth wheel and remove the bed liner and we can go ahead and cut out what we need. Before we make our cut outs we'll go ahead and support the bed liner up in the air a little bit with a couple pieces of timber. We'll go ahead and drill some pilot holes for a saw we're going to use to make the final cut out. So lets take our saw and we'll trace on the outside of our line and just cut it out.

Alright, and from this point we can go ahead with the fifth wheel install as normal.

Service was great and friendly. Price was very competitive. However, product information should have advised for special application for my 03 Dodge 3500, rear rail mounting brackets. No big deal, though I figured it out. Reese instructions could more detailed. I installed the hitch myself. All is good. Etrailer, will get more business from me. 156117

The product was exactly what I order, and showed up at my house way quicker than what I thought it would. The instructions were very self explanatory the hardware and mounting brackets were all together. That makes it nice for instillation purposes. Thanks again!! 308567

I'm satisfied with the hitch I bought, I liked the fact that I could type in my truck make and model to find out what hitch I needed.( I have a short bed) It brought up several for me to chose from and in different prices ranges that I could afford.. The product was shipped fast also. Thanks etrailer! 30248

1996 Ford F-150

I've had this system installed in my 1996 Ford F150 for a year now. I did the installation myself and found it to be relatively easy. I had to remove the rear tires to give better access to the frame, but after I did that drilling the needed holes and bolting in the brackets was straight foward. I use these rails with a gooseneck plate and have had no trouble pulling anything yet. 568266

Appears to be well engineered and should provide safe towing. I do have one suggestion for improved customer satisfaction. Installation required a drill bit (17/32) that was unavailable anywhere near where I live, even at a local hardware store. I would have appreciated the option of purchasing the drill bit from etrailer and having it delivered with the rail kit. 378887

I have a 1990 Chevy Silverado 3500. The instructions were fine for most of the installation. At least one top bolt location had to be moved to match the frame. Two of the brackets required some cutting of plates on the frame to fit properly. One bracket bolt was a pain to get in because it was right behind the shock tower bracket. 17/32" drill bit was almost impossible to find. 133371

Thanks for the video I am a Tech and have never installed the 30035 kit. I was able to watch the video prior to install and this allowed me to get all the tools together and installed the rails with the hitch 30047 in about 2.5 hours. I think it is a great thing that you post these videos.... The truck I did was a 2007 F350 which was very similar to the 2004 F250 in the video... Thanks. RJ 4850

Follow instruction very easy to install. Works well with my hitch. Took more time reading instruction than installing on truck. Drilling whole in the bed of the truck wanted to make sure I understood what I was doing before drilling. Installed on a 93 Chevy Crew Cab Dually, long bed. Truck sat high enought that I did not have to raise it up or remove the tires whick cut down on the istallation time greatly. 82020

I placed my order on Sunday, Mar. 6 and within 2 hours had three different confirmation of order emails. Didn't expect any feedback until Monday at the earliest. Received my order in hand Wednesday, Mar 9. Turn around time was great. I haven't had a chance to install yet, but have opened all packaging and everything looks just like it was described. Thank you so much. I will not hesitate to order again from you in the future! 9061

Installed these rails with the short bed Reese bracket kit for 2015 or newer f150. Installation went well. Instructions were pretty straight forward but measurements from end of bed were not quite right and put the rails too far forward of the underbed brackets by about 2". I actually measured off the cross rails under the bed of the truck after I had installed the brackets. Helpful hint: after getting a hole drilled on either side of the front rail to secure it to brackets under bed, put the hitch on both rails which will line up the rear rail exactly right then drill the rest of your mounting holes. The included spacers are not quite thick enough and have come out from between the rails and bottom of the bed a few times even after I tightened bolts so much, bed started to bend. Have to find some other Shem's to make it tight enough. I would recommend these rails eventhough it took a little bit to get them in the right location. PS - Be very careful when drilling holes on driver side as you are right over the gas tank. 259709

2010 Ford F-350 Super Duty

We recently installed a Curt Q24 Dual Jaw 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch (C16245) using a Reese 10 Bolt Universal Base Rails and Installation Kit (RP30035). Installation went VERY well with no complications. We wanted a 'Super Duty' 5th wheel hitch for our Ford F350 Super Duty pickup and this Curt Q24 with its 24,000 pound towing capacity is everything we were looking for. Thanks etrailer for making this hitch so affordable. We've prepared all of our family's vehicles for towing over the last ten plus years through etrailer and have NEVER been disappointed. Thanks again! 310734

The kit arrived very quickly, in fact shipping was moved from "5 to 7 days" to "3 to 5 days"and arrived in 5 day. During Christmas rush this was great, and really appreciated. I ask a technician friend to install it for me. It went together very nicely. I am rating this as EXCELLENT, do to the ease of installation an the escallation of the shipping arrangement. Thank You for a great product and great service. LGK satisfied customer 111867

I just finished test fitting all the components of the system and found it very easy and enjoyable. The only problem I noticed was the packaging was far from robust enough to handle the product. Three of the four box's were severely damaged and were only held together by a mass amount of packing tape which made opening tough. I should have taken pictures my mistake, but wanted too make sure all components were present and accounted for which they were. Great system and was a pleasure to deal with, thanks for the great product and will sent pictures when installed in truck... 391532

purchased just the rails for 5th wheel receiver as we bought a used camper and the Reese Easy Loader came with it but owner did not want to remove rails from their truck. Technician was excellent in helping with installation and emailed us directions specific to my truck. Shipping was quick and install went well. We had room to use 12 bolts vs 10 so we did. We did install 1" forward in bed as we had room to do it. Better more forward when hauling. The knurled bolts were too short for our truck bed and we called and let them know. We had our own that were longer so no delay in install. 282744

I purchased this hitch mount to replace my old one, which had become damaged. The mount fit perfectly on the old mount drill holes and worked with my existing 5th wheel hitch. I watched the installation video first for any tips which gave me an idea of what I was up against. I received the item fast and free, which is what I expect from etrailer. Always a pleasure doing business with you. Thanks again 381012

I ordered this for a ford f150 and laid it out as specified, measurments and then re checked them to be sure of where i had to drill marked all holes as specified in the data information sheet drilled the bed holes and started to install the bolts 2 holes were miss identified and when i went to install the brackets they would not fit in correct position had to reverse the brackets to go inward instead of outward which was a pain inthe a-- to get in and tighten the nuts the 2 rearward bolts are drilled close to the emmison tank and neither one can be torqued let alone to the 85 ft pds trcommended the most rear is directlu above the tank and should be noted in the instructions as you cant see it unless on a hoist this is a saftey hazzard because a drill could go thru it and cause an explosion there should be a specific note to this problem i dare to say who ever wrote these instructions has never attempted to install one of these kits or he would be cusing himself a friend of mine recommended you people service and delivery were good but instructions and installation sucks thank and you have a good day 147975

The rails are solid and work as expected. Unfortunately it was not clear to me from the description at that "universal" meant that you need to drill through the frame to install and that there was a custom bracket available as an alternative that lines up with existing holes in the frame. While they were very helpful and willing to do a return, the cost of shipping the new product and returning the old made the whole transaction a costly mistake. 106438

Im planing to buy the same rails for my dodge diesel 2005 full box but do not want to make the same mistake so what kind of bracket and are they a must or makes it safer? thanks

-- comment by: Sid - 12/31/2013

2496

The brackets are not necessarily safer, but they are easier to install. They require less, and in some cases, no drilling through the frame in order to install. For a 2005 Ram 2500 with 8 foot bed, you would use part RP50140-58. This kit includes the custom fit brackets that attach to the frame as well as the rails that sit in the bed of the truck where the fifth wheel secures. No matter what, you will need to drill through the bed on any of these kits. I have also included a link to a video of this kit being installed on a 2006 Ram.

I am very impressed with the fit and finish. Packaging from etrailer.com was inadequate. UPS man unloaded the package, rang the doorbell and drove away before I got outside. There was a lock washer laying on the ground and a bracket was hanging out of the box. We opened the package and inventoried everything, and to my amazement everything was there. Ordering process was very easy and my order shipped quickly. While on my lunch break at work I added 6 items to my cart and printed it so I could complete the order when I got home. About 4 hours later 3 of the 6 items increased in price. This hitch increased in price by $2, not a big deal I guess. I was able to find this item about $12 cheaper at another retailer and I provided this information to etrailer.com. Within a few hours they refunded me 110% of the difference. I am installing this on a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 short bed and the instructions are lacking. Maybe a professional installer who has done this many times would not have any problems, but the instructions leave some things to your imagination. 336456

Working great after one year of use. Use it to tow a 30 gooseneck trailer and it has worked as advertised. I bought a used 5th wheel hitch and although I have never used it, it fits perfectly in the rail system.

I installed this kit in my 2006 Silverado 2500HD to hold a Reese 16k sliding hitch. The kit is very well built and had more parts than required to complete the installation. Once installed, works great and am very pleased! The work itself is cumbersome and a couple things to be aware of. First, I squared and centered the rails as required. Before I drilled in the bed, I set the hitch in the rails and they moved slightly and had to recenter. This only tops a few minutes but I recommend setting the hitch in the rails before drilling. Second, the alignment for the front chassis brackets was challenging. You have to drill the bottom two bolt holes to ensure you can get a wrench in the nuts as the frame is enclosed there and reaching around the tank and brake lines. The instructions were not specific as to which holes to drill. 489582

The product was as good as the last two I have installed in my pickups. The removable gooseneck plate solves other use of bed problems, and give an opportunity to use both theFifth wheel and goose. The only problem I can see is if a slide in camper were used, there would need to be front and rear spacers. I have also used the rails as attachments points for a removable bed crane and a removable in bed winch. Sorry, no pics at this time 602825

These heavy mounts came with all the hardware and instructions for ford gm and dodge trucks. I installed them in a couple hours. More noteworthy though, was they arrived in a heavy duty box and were firmly fixed inside the box to keep them from moving around during shipping which was free. Any heavy parts I get from retailer arrive in a heavy duty mil spec container that actually protects the items I have purchased. Do you have a question about this Fifth Wheel Installation Kit?

  • Towing Fifth Wheels and Gooseneck Trailers with Ford F250 with 6 Foot 8 Inch Bed
  • Good truck choice! A 6-3/4 foot bed should work just fine for a gooseneck, but for a fifth wheel, you won't have enough clearance between the trailer loft and the rear of the cab. During turns, you could possibly have the trailer corner collide with the rear of the cab. Which would be bad. Since you don't have the truck yet, I'd go with an 8 foot bed so you can avoid clearance issues all together. There are two ways you can gain enough clearance. First, you can use a sliding fifth wheel...

  • You have two options for installing the RBW Lil Rocker in your 2007 Ford F-150 pickup. You can use the Universal Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Installation Kit with Rails, item # RP30035, or the Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Custom Installation Brackets - Ford F-150, item # RP50081-58 that you referenced. I would recommend you use the Custom Brackets # RP50081-58, these will install in about half the time of the universal rails and will minimize the drilling into your 2007 Ford F-150. I have...

  • Do all Fifth Wheel Rails have the Same Dimensions
  • Most fifth wheel rails are made to the same industry standard dimensions. They aren't all though. If you measure 22 inches on center between the two rails and they look like the rails of the # RP30035 that you referenced they would be the industry standard. These rails can fit hitch brands Curt, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Reese, Valley and Husky.

  • Are Replacement Parts Available For the RBW Lil Rocker 5th Wheel Hitch
  • Replacement parts for the RBW Lil Rocker are no longer available. RBW Industries, the manufacturer of the Lil Rocker, was acquired by AL-KO Kober Corp and the fifth wheel lines were discontinued. You may be able to find replacement parts on private ad sites or auction sites, but new replacement parts are not available. If you would consider a new fifth wheel hitch, we have several options that you may be interested in. An economical hitch that has a similar design to the Lil Rocker...

  • Compatibility of Reese Fifth Wheel Truck Bed Rails with Hitches from Different Manufacturers
  • The Reese fifth wheel bed rails, like those included with the # RP30035 Fifth Wheel Install Kit are compatible with many, but not all fifth wheel hitches. They can be used with Hidden Hitch, Draw-Tite, Reese, Valley, Curt or Husky above bed mount fifth wheel hitches. The # RP30035 is considered a universal kit that will fit many different makes and models of truck. In many cases a custom install kit is available, that would make for an easier, less time consuming install. If you are...

  • How to Install a 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch # RP30047 In the Bed of a Ford F-350 Long Bed
  • Depending on the model year and design of your F-350 there could be one of several fifth wheel installation kits available. If your vehicle is 1998 or older a universal installation kit, item # RP30035, will be needed. This kit includes brackets that install under the bed of the truck and rails that install in the bed of the truck to accept any of the Reese fifth-wheel hitches, like the Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - 16,000 lbs, item # RP30047, that you mentioned. If your F-350 is a...

  • Can Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Hitch Be Installed in Truck Bed At Same Time
  • There is not a bracket kit that would allow both a fifth wheel and a gooseneck hitch to be installed together, however there are solutions that might allow you to swap back and forth, depending on what you currently have installed. If you have nothing installed in your truck bed at this time, you can use the # RP30035 kit you mentioned to install 5th wheel rails. Install the 5th wheel into the rails when needed, and when you need to tow a gooseneck, remove the fifth wheel and install...

  • Comparison of Reese and Pro Series Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitches
  • The Pro Series # PS30132 and the Reese # RP30047 Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitches are both very similar. They're actually both manufactured by the same parent company. The obvious differences between the two are that the Pro Series is rated higher at 20,000 pounds and it comes with the industry standard rails and universal installation kit. The not-so obvious difference is that the Reese products are made with a heavier gauge steel than Pro Series. So for everyday use and longevity out...

  • What is the Maximum Towing Capacity for a 1993 Chevy C/K 3500 with 7.4 Liter Motor
  • I will be happy to help sort all this out. The maximum gross trailer weight for a 1993 Chevy 3500 series truck with the 7.4 liter (454) motor is 10,000 pounds. Everything else is lower. It depends on a few other factors such as if it is a 2x4 or 4x4, cab style, bed length. This information is straight from a GM document that covered all the capacities for all of their trucks for the 1993 model year. So, now all we have to do is figure out exactly what your truck is rated for and then...

  • Fifth Wheel Installation Rails for 15K Reese Hitch
  • We certainly have the rails you are needing. If you need the entire Universal Install Kit with the rails that mount in the bed along with the brackets and hardware to attach the rails to the truck frame, you will need part # RP30035. If you are needing just the rails themselves, use part # RP58058. The rails do not come with hardware to bolt to the brackets, so if you need the hardware you should also order part # RP58430. Depending on the year, make and model of your truck, there might...

  • What Are Measurements To Install Base Rails For Reese Fifth Wheel Hitch On A 2010 GMC Sierra
  • To install a fifth wheel hitch on your 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 with a 6-1/2 foot bed, you will need to use a fifth wheel hitch with a slider. The slider is used to eliminate clearance problems between the truck cab and the fifth wheel trailer on slow speed turns. The Reese 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch, # RP30047 you have referenced is a fixed hitch and will not give you the clearance you will need to tow a fifth wheel with a 6-1/2 foot bed. I would recommend the Reese 16K Fifth Wheel Trailer...

  • Where to Position 5th Wheel Base Rails on 2015 Ford F-250 with 6-3/4-Foot Bed
  • Installation of the Reese 5th wheel base rail kit # RP30035 in your 2015 Ford-F-250 requires that the rear edge of the rear base rail be positioned 32-1/2-inches from the rear edge of the truck bed. Do not position the rails based on the tailgate, but on the rear edge of the bed itself. The vehicle-specific installation information for this kit in your truck are shown on page 12 of the linked instructions. I also prepared a photo diagram for you showing this measurement.

  • 5th Wheel Installation Kit for a 2006 F-250 Superduty Universal Versus Custom
  • The best kits to use for 5th Wheel installation are the custom kits. According to our installers the custom kit will save you a lot of time and energy because they are designed to fit with the factory construction of your 2006 Ford F-250. The universal kit will work on your vehicle, but it requires a more difficult installation including more drilling than the custom kit. The Custom install kits for 2006 Ford F-250 Super Duties are the Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Custom Installation Kit...

  • Recommended Fifth Wheel Hitch Installation Kit for 2015 Ram 2500 4WD 6 Foot Bed
  • Reese offers three different 5th wheel installation kits that are compatible with your 2015 Ram 2500. The Universal Kit part # RP30035 is a lower cost alternative, but because holes would need to be drilled into the truck frame, install would take longer than it would with a Custom Install Kit. • Can I Haul Fifth-Wheel or Gooseneck Trailer With 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 5.5 Ft. Short Bed 2WD Crew Cab
  • For a fifth wheel hitch, we do have applications for the 5.5 ft. bed of the 2010 GMC Sierra 1500, but use of a Sidewinder King Pin is required for clearance. A Sidewinder King Pin will move the pivot point of the trailer back 22 Inches which will give you additional clearance needed to make turns (see Sidewinder FAQ). Before buying a fifth wheel trailer, I would recommend using our Pin Box Conversion chart that shows all the fifth-wheel pin boxes that are compatible with Sidewinder King...

  • Increasing Towing Capacity on a 2003 F250 Crew Cab
  • The manufacturer ratings are based on the engine, transmission, suspension, and all other systems working together. You can ease the load on your suspension by adding a suspension enhancement, and you can tune your engine for more efficiency when towing, but we do not have a way to increase the towing capacity for a vehicle, so you may want to look at a bigger vehicle or a smaller trailer. If you choose keep the 2003 Ford F-250 and want to make it most usable to tow a more suitable...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Frame Mounting Brackets for a 2003 Ford F250
  • The mounting rails that sit in the truck bed that provide the connection point for the hitch can be reused, but you'll need new frame mounting brackets (unless you've used a universal mounting kit like # RP30035) and hardware, as the hardware is meant for a one time use only. For the Ford, I'd recommend going with the Reese custom install brackets, part # 50043, which included the hardware to mount the brackets to the truck frame. To attach the bed rails to the frame brackets, you'll...

  • I have included a link to the installation instructions for the universal kit, # RP30035. Instructions for your 2006 Chevy Silverado start on page 5. We have a video that shows the installation process. Because you have a short bed pickup, please make sure your hitch has a slider on it.
