The 5-way flat connector is found on most newer boat trailers that have hydraulic brakes. The fifth wire in this model ties into the reverse lights on your vehicle so that a signal can be sent to your hydraulic brake actuator to disengage whenever the tow vehicle is put into reverse. To use this function, your actuator must have an electric reverse lockout with solenoid.

The 5-way design will also work with small utility trailers that have electric brakes. For this type of application, the fifth wire will need to be wired to correspond with your in-cab, electric brake controller.

Have not had opportunity to put products to use yet. Products look like they should do the intended job well. Etrailer.com does have really fair pricing and shipping time is outstanding! Received complete order within 3 days of placing order. Will definitely use again.

by:

etrailer is the only place I could find this item. It is much higher quality than other flat connectors, with weather covers and big finger/thumb grips to actually hold onto the connectors and easily separate them. I used the 'trailer' end in my adapter unit.

by:

The female connector is attached to the swing arm of a motorcycle to provide lighting lighting for a trailer pulled by the motorcycle. This means that there is likely much more movement in the harness than for an automotive application. I've never had a problem with any part of the harness. I found this product to be exactly what I wanted, well made and easy to install. The protective cap functions well as it remains pliable (flexible) after a year of use, and while it has never fallen off in use, it is easy enough to remove before making the connection. It has done the perfect job of keeping mud and other detritus out of the contacts. The recessed nut holders also function well and is one of the reasons I chose this wiring kit. This wiring kit gets high regard and recommendation from me. All of my purchases from etrailer have been solid products delivered at reasonable cost.

It works, still. Does the job I need it to do. Not much more to say. In general, I tend to like the stuff that Hopkins makes.

by:

The quality of this connector is great. I installed ea one end to the hitch platform on the motorcycle and bolted it down then did the same on the trailer. I used the old connectors to make a jumper between them. Works great and I don’t have to worry about wires getting damaged. Love it

Great

by:

With the help of Crystal I ordered this connector and a matching wiring harness for my motorcycle and trailer. I was unsure if these were the correct parts, but Crystal was able to locate the exact ones and ship them the same day.
I was very pleased with the fast service and knowledgeable staff. Even with standard shipping, my order arrived 4 days sooner than was projected.

To say I'm happy with etrailer is an understatement. They are great.

by:

Replaced a round connector that was unreliable and would loose connection over the road. This flat 5 pin makes 100% connection every time and stays connected. The boot is also weather tite when connected or not so there's no corrosion. Great product.

by:

Product was as described and fast shipping, great service!

by:

I'm hoping to do much more business with etrailer! Thank you

by:

Order was shipped promptly and the product was of great quality.

One year after installing the conversion of drum to disk brakes on my single axle EZ Loader boat trailer, the brakes continue to work perfectly. I've had no reason to seek assistance on service or warranty.

by:

All in all good service and fair price.

  • How to Wire Reverse Lights on a Trailer with a 4-Way Trailer Connector
We do have a solution for you, however, you will not be able to power reverse lights on a trailer with a 4-pin trailer connector. The reverse lights on a trailer must receive power from the reverse lights on the tow vehicle. To do this, you will want to install a 5-pin connector on the trailer and on the tow vehicle. There are many options, but I recommend installing the Hopkins Endurance 5-way Flat Wiring Kit, # HM47890, for a uniform look. You can simply cut off the 4 pin connectors...

  • Adapting a 5-Way Flat Vehicle Side Trailer Connector to a 4-Way Flat for Towing Lights
You may be able to plug in the 4-Way flat into the 5-Way flat without an adapter. There will just be one pin that is not used by the 4-Way left over. All the other functions will still work. The pin furthest from the ground pin (on the vehicle side 5-Way) will be the one that is not used. If the two connectors will not fit together, you can use Wiring Kit, # HM47890. You will just need the trailer side of the kit. You will have to replace the connector on the tow lights with the trailer...

  • Does Hopkins 4-Way Tow Bar Lighting Kit have Charge Line for Towed Vehicle Battery
The Hopkins tow bar lighting kit part # HM56009 that you referenced does not carry a charge circuit. What you'd also need is the part # HM47890 to convert the 4-ways to 5-ways so you can use the extra pin for the charge circuit.

  • Can Reverse Lockout Solenoid Be Installed on DA91 Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator
Yes, you can definitely add a solenoid to the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM8509202 so your brakes don't activate when you put your vehicle and trailer in reverse. What you're looking for is the Reverse Lockout Solenoid # DM11993. Just be sure to install a 5-Way connector on both your trailer and your tow vehicle so you can get that reverse function to the solenoid. If you don't already have these then we have the Hopkins Kit # HM47890 you can use to accomplish this.

  • Installation of Electric Reverse Lockout Solenoid for Surge Brakes
If you don't install the reverse lockout solenoid # T4748800 that came with your actuator, then unless you have free backing brake assemblies, you will not be able to back up without activating the brakes immediately. This solenoid basically works like a valve not allowing the hydraulic brake fluid to move through the brake lines to activate your brake assemblies. Because you have a 4-way, I recommend you add the Hopkins Endurance 5-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit - Vehicle and Trailer...

  • Installing Trailer Brake Wiring to Existing 4-Way Trailer Wiring
Since you already have the 4-way trailer connector like # 18004, to add your electric brakes you simply will use the Hopkins Endurance 5-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit - Vehicle and Trailer Ends - Ergonomic Design # HM47890 and match color for color with your existing 4-way. The 5th pin will be used for your trailer brakes instead of a reverse light which is the other typical application for 5-way wiring using that blue wire on the trailer side. The same will be done on the vehicle side...

  • Adding a Trailer Battery Charge Line to 4-Way Trailer Connector
To charge your trailer battery from your vehicle, I recommend the Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit # RM-156-75. This can be run to 5 way connection on each side like the Hopkins Endurance 5-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit - Vehicle and Trailer Ends - Ergonomic Design # HM47890. This will give you a clean connection of both sides to run to your battery terminals.

  • Does the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator Have a Lockout
The Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator part # DX33FR comes with a manual lockout key for reversing. That said, if you would like for this to be done automatically you can simply add an electric lockout, the Solenoid Valve part # T4748800. That said, you'll also need a 5-way on the trailer and vehicle for this so if you don't already have one I recommend the Hopkins Endurance 5-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit part # HM47890. The Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator is made in the USA.

I do have an option for you but the Titan Model 20 Surge Brake Actuator doesn't have a manual lockout key nor do we have one compatible. That said, if you need to lockout the actuator you can simply install a bypass solenoid, the Replacement Solenoid Valve for Titan Brake Actuators with Reverse Lockouts part # T4748800. This will require a 5-way connector so if you don't have one already I recommend the Hopkins Endurance 5-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit part # HM47890 which comes with both...

  • Can a 3-Wire to 2-Wire Trailer Wiring Harness Converter be Bypassed
The only way to bypass a 3-wire to 2-wire trailer wiring harness converter (assuming your vehicle has a 3-wire or separate tail light system) would be to convert your trailer to a 3-wire (or separate) tail light system. This means you will need a separate tail light circuit, brake light circuit, and turn signal circuits on the trailer. You will also need to use either a 5-way, 6-way or 7-way style trailer connector on your trailer and tow vehicle and substitute one of the pins for the additional...

  • 4-Way Vehicle End Adapter To 5-Way Trailer Connector With Wiring For Surge Brake Lockout
For the rear of your your truck the Curt Trailer Connector Adapter # C57187 will plug into your current 4-way and there is a additional wire that you will tie into your reverse light wiring on your vehicle. This is what will send power to the electronic lock out on your trailer surge brake. For getting this connection to the front of your vehicle when you use a front mounted hitch I recommend using the Hopkins Endurance 5-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit # HM47890 that comes with both the...

  • If Surge Brake Actuator is Removed Will Trailer Brakes Still Activate
If you were to remove the surge brake actuator from your trailer then there wouldn't be any pressure to your hydraulic brakes which means your brakes simply won't activate at all. I recommend installing a reverse lockout solenoid like the Titan # TK71-755-00 or the Demco # DM5404 because it ties in to the reverse light function on your tow vehicle and essentially prevents your actuator from applying pressure to your hydraulic brakes. Keep in mind that you'll need to install a 5-Way flat...

  • How to Wire Titan # T4748800 Reverse Lock-Out Solenoid Valve
The Titan Replacement Reverse Lockout Solenoid you mentioned is extremely easy to wire. The solenoid has two wires exiting it. One wire grounds to the trailer tongue, the other would connect to the reverse light circuit on the tow vehicle. Once wired, the solenoid will close when the tow vehicle is shifted into reverse, preventing the trailer brakes from applying when the trailer is backed. Since it sounds like both your vehicle and trailer have a 4-pole connector, you'll need to install...

You are correct that a separate wire is run for a reverse light. The Light Guide LED Truck/Trailer Light - Backup and Tail - Submersible - 12 Diodes - Oval - Clear Lens # BUL602CRB will use the reverse light circuit of your tow vehicle, normally tapped into at the tail light assembly reverse light. This does require adding another wire to your trailer connector. I recommend using the Hopkins Endurance 5-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit - Vehicle and Trailer Ends - Ergonomic Design # HM47890....

The Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator part # 099-175-20 has both an electric lockout as well as a manual. The electric one is a single wire on the back of the actuator that will be hooked up to the reverse light circuit on the vehicle. The manual one is engaged by placing the safety pin in the hole on the side of the actuator housing. Please note, you will need a 5-way to use the electric lockout and for this I recommend the Hopkins Endurance 5-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit part # HM47890...

  • Replacing 7-Way Trailer Connector with Smaller Connector to Tow a Trailer with Brakes
A 6-way round trailer connector, like # HM48420, once it's mounted isn't going to be much smaller than a 7-way. If you don't need any functions other than running, brake, and turn lights along with the brake circuit I suggest going with a 5-way flat connector like # HM47900. To put a 5-way on both your tow vehicle and trailer you can use the kit # HM47890 that includes both connectors.

  • Will Removing Check Valve on Master Cylinder Keep Brakes from Engaging When Backing Up
Removing the check valve from the master cylinder for hydraulic drum brakes, like part # T1777401, enables it to put out a greater psi rating so that it will be compatible with hydraulic disc brakes that require the higher psi rating. If you are mechanically inclined and you carefully reassemble the master cylinder then you can remove the check valve. However, if you are less mechanically inclined then it would be better to replace the drum master cylinder with a disc master cylinder,...

Yes, there is a way to back up your boat trailer and keep the surge brake actuator, # T43397007K, from applying pressure to the trailer brakes. You will need an electric lockout solenoid, # T4748800, which will close when you shift the vehicle into reverse, allowing the trailer to be backed.
