Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's electrical junction box, which is located in your rear cargo area, beneath the trim panel on the passenger's side

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2005 Honda Odyssey

Today on our 2005 Honda Odyssey, we're going to take a look at and show you how to install this Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with a 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector. Part number is C56161. Right now, here's what you're going to have in your wiring kit. Of course, just what we're after there. We're looking to have this 4-pole connector situated at the back of the vehicle so we can connect the trailer or cargo carrier, or what have you, to it. As you can see, that runs into our converter box. Now, this converter box is going to take signals from our vehicle, and it converts it into a usable signal for our trailer. Now, this offers surface-mount technology.

That means instead of our wiring passing through holes on our board, it's been mounted directly to the surface that's inside of there. This is going to give us great reliability and great dependability, even in rough conditions, and it also minimizes the heat and it's going to give us a higher output to our trailer lights themselves. Now, our stop lights or our turn lights are going to draw about 5 amps, same with our tail lights. They're going to draw about 5 amps. This system is not going to take nay power from the lighting system itself. You see here we've got a fuse holder.

The provided fuse will slide in there, and the box is powered from a 12-volt power source inside of the vehicle, so we're not overloading any of our circuits. We're also going to have a ground that's already got a ring terminal on it here. That way we can ground the system out, and everything's going to work properly for us. We've got instructions, some zip ties, you can see some foam tape here for mounting our box, and then a few pieces of hardware there that we may or may not use, depending on the application. They've also provided the smaller 10-amp fuse. This is for mounting in our passenger side kick panel area to complete the circuit here and make sure everything works. Now, to begin our installation, we're going to pull off the couple of little hangers that are located on the rear scuff panel here, so those just thread in.

We'll do that on both sides. Now, we want to pull out on the bottom. We can set this aside. Now, we'll also pull out slightly on our side panel here to get access to this control panel that we've got right here. I'm going to take this top hook out, too, just to help you guys see a little bit better. Now, we're going to take our plug, we're going to go right up, and about midway up over on the side closest to us.

I'm going to slide that in and make sure it clicks. If we look right here, we're going to have a ground location. We'll just use that body ground so we're not drilling any excess holes. You're going to use a 10-mm socket just to pull that bolt out, like I said, through our ring terminal, then we'll thread it back in. We want to make sure, of course, that we keep all the other grounds connected as well. All right. That should be secured just like that. Now what we're going to do is take a little bit of rubbing alcohol. We're going to clean off the back of our box and also this flat area right here. We'll give that a second to evaporate, place our foam tape on the back just like that. I actually think I'm going to run this wire here . I'm going to run it right through here. That'll keep everything a little bit nicer for us. Keep those tucked back out of the way. Just pull the cover off there. We can slide it into position. Push it down so it adheres. Just uncoil our 4-pole wire here. I'm also going to run my 4-pole wire behind the wires there just to keep everything kind of up and out of the way and tidy. Now we'll take our larger 10-amp fuse. I'm going to slide that into our fuse holder, and we'll cap it off. Now we're ready to put our side panel back in place. Place our little catch here. Then, we want to pull out that weather stripping so it'll rest over top of that panel. Now we'll get our rear stuff panel put back into place here. We're going to pull the weather stripping out on it as well. We'll want to pop in on the front side here. What we can do is just bundle up our excess wire here. Take our protective cover, and we're going to put it over top of it here, and we'll be able to use that to go around our wiring, just kind of keep it bundled up. Just like that. Kind of keep it over here out of the way. When we need it, simply unwrap it here, take out whatever amount we'll need, let it rest right over so you've got a good cushion there that's going to protect our wire. The only place you really want to avoid is going to be that striker right there. Here we are, ready to connect to our trailer and head down the road. All right, and we'll take our small 10-amp fuse, pop out our little sliding cover, and we'll want to place our fuse in position number 5. If you have one, 2, 3, 4, 5. Right here, number 5. Just slide our cover back on. Let's go test out that wiring. All right. Now, let's start by turning on our running lights. With those working as they should, turn on our left blinker and our right blinker, and then hit our brakes. All right. With everything working properly, that's going to complete our installation of the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with the 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number C56161 on our 2005 Honda Odyssey.

Easy Installation Works Great . Bolts included fit very tight unless you run a thread chaser through the location on the vehicle provided. CAUTION do NOT try to force bolts into vehicle as they could break!!! Plug & play works great also if you dont forget to install the fuse in the fuse block. 570774

I love your website and doing business with you was about as good as any I’ve done anywhere. Plenty of helpful info, easy to search and navigate, checkout was straightforward. I sure wish other places were this helpful and easy (and fast!) Maybe you could market your platform and concepts... Best of all, the product arrived fast, in good condition, and installed exactly as described. Oh yeah, love the detail and variety of the videos too! Thanks again! 599211

Works great after a year and a cross country move, no trouble at all. Finally figured out why the pigtail is so long...it’s supposed to be routed under the trunk threshold trim piece so you can stow the pigtail in the tire jack compartment on the left side of the van. Dunno how I missed that in the instructional...d’oh.

Everything and more included in the package and wiring was very easy. Helped that etrailer had videos of installation to follow along. Make sure to check your trailer wiring thoroughly first though as I installed this and it still didn't work----wasn't a problem with this wiring kit, but the trailer itself. Now with that solved this product is still working great. 594749

Good deal for a 4 pin connector that comes assembled to just plugs into the open connector on my 2008 Honda Odyssey. Online videos are super with helping get to the connector, grounding, panel removal and grounding. No need to hassle with finding wires in the van that require tapping. Plug it in, add a fuse & you're good to go. 560661

Ask the Experts about this Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Lights not Working After Harness Install
There are a number of steps for you to take to figure out exactly why the lights on your trailer are not working. You did not specify the harness you used, but for a 2007 Honda Odyssey, there are three fits, the T-One # 118438, Curt # C56161, and Hopkins # HM11143115. To start, we'll isolate the problem to either the trailer or vehicle. You can do this by using a circuit tester such as # 40376 to check the functions of the 4-way plug while somebody else engages them (brake, turn signal,...

  • Comparing Trailer Wiring Harnesses for a 2008 Honda Odyssey
The Curt wiring harness # C56161 and the Tow Ready wiring harness # 118438 for the 2008 Honda Odyssey install the same way. Both install behind in a junction box located in the cargo area of the van. This is an ideal setup because it uses the factory location on the vehicle. The Curt harness actually uses a newer technology inside the converter box. Both harnesses would work well for you. I have linked instructions and a video for you.

  • Troubleshooting Curt Trailer Wiring Harness on 2012 Honda Odyssey
The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56161 is not a fit for your 2012 Honda Odyssey. It is only a confirmed fit for 2005 to 2010 models. For your 2012 model, you would need # C56378 which replaced the C56118. If that is the model you have, then I recommend checking the connections behind the driver's side trim panel in the rear cargo area of your Odyssey. Check the pins to ensure there are no bent pins and then make sure the ground connection...

  • Recommended Towing Components for 2005 Honda Odyssey
Your 2005 Honda Odyssey is rated for towing up to 3,500 lbs. If you don't already have the trailer hitch, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C13068. This will be more than capable of towing your boat and trailer. If you don't already have the wiring, I recommend the Curt # C56161. This harness plugs into your Honda Odyssey's electrical junction box, which is located in your rear cargo area, beneath the trim panel on the passenger's side. Then...

  • Can Trailer Wiring Harness be Routed and Mounted Outside of a 2010 Honda Odyssey
For trailer wiring harnesses that have the connector stored inside the vehicle you will just need to pull it out when needed and you can close the rear hatch on the wiring and the weather stripping will protect it. Stay away from the locking mechanism though. These harnesses were not meant to be routed permanently outside of your 2010 Honda Odyssey. If you wanted to do that any way you would need to remove the flooring getting down to the bare metal of the cargo area. Then you will need...

  • No Lights On Trailer When Using Curt Custom Wiring # C56161 On 2010 Honda Odyssey
You will want to check the converter of the Curt Custom Wiring, part # C56161. Use a circuit tester, like part # 40376 to check to make sure there is power going into the converter. Then check to see if your are getting power coming out of the converter. If you are not getting power coming out of the converter, it may need to be replaced. Also, I would check the vehicle side connector to make sure there is not any corrosion in the connector which could be causing a bad connection.

  • Troubleshooting Malfunctioning Trailer Wiring Harness on 2009 Honda Odyssey
According to your description, it sounds like the converter is shot, allowing output on incorrect circuits. The vast majority of the time, the failure of the converter is caused by a short circuit of some kind in the trailer wiring. Before replacing the trailer wiring harness with a replacement like the Tow Ready # 118438, you'll want to closely examine the wiring on your trailer to find the short. If you don't locate and repair the short, you will continue to blow up wiring harnesses....

It is not uncommon for some trailer wiring harnesses like the Curt # C56161 to pass a small amount of power even when no vehicle light function is activated. Honestly, either the Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring # C56161 or the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring # 118438 would work for you since they basically do the same thing. However, Curt uses a more modern style circuit board that builds less heat and generally lasts longer than the style of circuit boards that are in the Tow Ready converters so I would go with the # C56161. It is rated for 2.1 amps per side for brake and turn signals and 7.5 amps total for all running lights. If you can check each light to determine the amperage draw that will tell you if even the 119147 harness is rated high enough.
