Product Detail

Light Kit Installation

Insert grommet

Step 1

Mount rubber grommets on both sides of cargo carrier tray making sure grommets are seated securely.

Insert light

Step 2

Press tail lamps into grommets until seated securely on both sides of carrier tray.

Route plug

Step 3

Route plug with green wire under cargo carrier to the passenger side (right) and plug into cargo carrier tail lamp.

Route plug with yellow wire under cargo carrier to the driver side (left) and plug into cargo carrier tail lamp.

Secure wiring

Step 4

With supplied cable ties, secure all wiring to the bottom of the cargo carrier.

Please note: With the off-set Y-harness, one wire lead (about 3' long) is run straight to a light. The other lead (about 6' long) is run along the back edge of the carrier before it curves up to the second light. On the 40101 and 59502 cargo carriers, the wires come up through the carrier's mesh floor to attach to the back of the lights. On the Tow Ready carriers 63153 and 63155, the tighter mesh floor is not large enough for the plug to pass through. Therefore, run the wire leads under the platform to the lights, then up the front of the carrier and around to the back of the light. This also helps prevent the wires from getting pinched by the cargo. On vehicles where the 4-pole trailer connector is tucked under the vehicle, a 4-pole extension may be required to connect the two plugs. See related items.

I used this with the bk70bb bracket kit to put on my Thule T2 bike rack. I was always worried about the expensive bikes on the back of the car when in traffic. The light kit makes brake lights visible and no worry of bikes blocking them any more. I used heavy duty outdoor double sided tape to mount brackets and lights to the rack.

The kit is still working and is not used everyday. I only put the bike rack on the car when traveling with the bicycles. It has made me worry less about someone rear ending me with the bikes on the back of the car now that I have the brake lights and blinkers on the bike rack.

by:

Added these to my Reese cargo rack and loved them. They make the cargo rack much easier to see and provide notice to others following about intentions to brake or turn

The LED LIGHTS have worked perfectly with my cargo carrier. Thanks eTrailer!

by:

Easy to use, came ready to go!

by:

The light kit is very well built, although the instructions to install on my carrier could have been better. The wires for the left and right side are not the same length and the longer wire is almost too long. They do work well and look good.

by:

Elcellent product and arrived early. Works just as advertised and looks nice on my Cargo Carrier. Just got done ordering more items. Great customer service department answered all my questions.

by:

Awesome light kit, extremely easy to install and very bright. This was a great choice because the black frame of my cargo carrier vanishes against the black background of my bumper. Trailing vehicles would have a hard time distinguishing that it protrudes out from the truck in low light conditions.

by:

Good quality kit, bright LED LIGHTS.
I
made a Light Bar out of inch and a half PVC pipe. I notched the ends of the PVC pipe and epoxied the LED Lamps into the pipe. I mounted it on the back of my KUAT platform bike carrier.

by:

The LED lights are bright! 5 stars!
Two
issues (see photos):
1) The lights wire is too short for my cargo carrier. I had to purchase a wire extension from [online] 2) The plug-in for the light protrudes into the cargo area. I feel a better design would be to have the connectors on the side.

by:

I purchased the light kit to mount on the on a platform style bicycle rack. The kit was easy to mount and the lights work well.

by:

I just want to say etrailer is a stand up company and they have great customer service. I had been searching for a bike rack for the back of my RV to carry EBikes, I had lots of questions on what would work the best for my needs before I invested hundreds of dollars.etrailer was the only company that I had faith in. I was able to talk to Joshua in customer service who was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I purchased a Hollywood E-bike rack and also a tail light set up as shown in my review. I give them a five star review

by:

Good quality products. Just completed assembly of the lights, mounting brackets for lights and wire harness on a Thule T2 bike rack. Wire ties were too short for securing wire to the bike rack square tubes. Still 5 Stars.

by:

The light kit was easy to install, as I have driven only a short distance with nothing in the cargo unit. I hope the lights stay in when loaded. The only con at this time is that the wire length on the drivers side is short by about 8 inches, I had to make a extension from trailer plug on car to harness.

by:

Lights seem to be good quality and are very bright. They really look great on my Thule T2 Classic bike rack.
A bit expensive though for just 2 lights. Thats why 4 stars, not 5. Also, unless you pay for the expensive 3 day shipping, your package will sit there for at least a week or more as it continually gets pushed back in the queue by higher priority packages.

by:

These lights and brackets resolved our issue. I am using a different bike rack. The running/brake/turning lights are blocked by our bikes. Etrailer had exactly what I needed. Ordering, shipping and products is great.
Thanks again etrailer.

by:

The lights look and work great, but it took some work, & I would change some things. Firstly, one side of the wiring is longer than the other. I’m not sure why. That didn’t work for me. I changed up the wiring so that both sides were equal in length. I also put the wiring in ¼” loom for looks, neatness, & longevity. I wish that it were possible to route the wiring inside the 2” tube that slides into the receiver hitch. That would require a couple of holes in the tube for entrance & exit, but it would be neater. I also wish that the plugs into the led lights didn’t impede into the cargo area so much. I can see those plugs getting in the way of boxes or containers. You can see that in the pic.
Overall, I love the lights.

by:

Great value and seemingly good quality. I opted to add stop lights with components reviewed on etrailer site. LED wiring with light kit is very problematic. Had to purchase a 12” 4 way extender. No way to do a neat, professional install due to the wire harness. Oh well, it’s installed. I would still do it again but suggest product management take control. . Love etrailer service.

by:

I have a Thule Easy Fold XT Bike Rake, which by the way is an awesome Bike Rack. It lacked one thing, Brake Lights. etrailer.com makes it easy to attach. Here is my installation which took about 30 minutes to install.

by:

Added taillights to to my 1 Up USA bike rack. Added a 3rd bike carrier to the double-rack and was concerned about covering my vehicle taillights when loaded w/ bikes. Used the eTrailer website for advice and purchase of components. The advice was excellent, components installed easliy and work well. Used BK70BB brackets with the light kit. Only issue was the wiring harness was a 12"-24" short for my custom installation.

by:

Easy install, nice and bright. Great addition to my Thule T2 Pro bike rack for safety and added visibility when vehicle tail lights are block from sight by four set of massive mountain bike tires/rims. Added peace of mind when carrying an expensive bike load to the trail head.

by:

The lights, I feel, are basically a mandatory addition. Without them, someone would easily plow into the carrier. I went with the LED and glad I did. They are extremely bright and clear. The rubber grommet fits loosely into the bracket on my Pro Series carrier but no worry, I used epoxy around the outside edges of the grommet, not the light! I would without hesitation give ETrailers five stars as their service and delivery was second to none. The lights themselves are really nice but only get four stars from me because of the harness length issue. One inch shorter and the driver side would not have made it. I would think with all of the notes about this issue, the company would care enough to add 6-12". Tells you something about the manufacturer. By the way, this light kit is on the larger 24" x 60" Pro Series carrier. It is used on a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad. Excellent carrier and ease of assembly. Have a torque wrench available. As I said though, ETrailer-excellent! I will be a return customer! Thanks!

by:

All products bought from etrailer.com have been as advertised. All products purchased are excellent. Products purchased are, Blue ox tow receiver, 6 inch drop/rise. A very strong, well made product. Also, a set of LED tow lights, for my scooter carrier. A 'Quiet hitch lock', which ensures no movement in my hitch at all. Lastly, a hitch plug, a little bit of 'whimsy', many thanks to the reps., at etrailer.com, their knowledge and advice has been invaluable.

by:

Attached the 98174LED light kit to a Curt Cargo Carrier using self tapping screws for the light mounting brackets and zip ties for the cables ... Also added a Hopkins coiled wire adapter to connect the light kit harness to my vehicle. Project turned out great!
I now use the cargo carrier for moving my kids into/out of their college dorms. Makes for safe trips with the added visibility that the light kit adds.

by:

The LED light kit installed with little effort and looks great! Being our cargo basket will be fully filled, it is necessary to have a bright light kit for Overland Travels we take in North America.

Patrick, still using very much. I tried to find recent pics of the rearRola HD rack, but not many. I did find the one attached which was takenjust prior to leaving for Overland Expo in Arizona. We are heavilyloaded down. The Rola rack has worked very well for us, including thelarge cargo bag. Just a note, there were NO tie down straps with thecargo bag. I use black bungee straps. Let me know how I might get someof the cargo straps for the bag I have.

Glad to hear the carrier is still hauling gear. We will be in touch about the straps, there are a few that might fit the bill.

The carrier I have is Erickson brand. The seller's pic shows no reflectors or lights. It came with reflective tape and I added the 4 orange round reflectors. Double stacking coolers and covering them with a tarp made the vehicle's [a Ford Explorer] lights hard to see at night. While the Erickson carrier doesn't seem to be set up for lights so I looked around at various options. A poster on another message board suggested the etrailer site.
The 98174LED unit seemed like it would fit my needs.
Pics of my innovated installation using zip ties.

1. As advertised by seller.
2. Carrier installed on vehicle. reflectors shown.
3. Left light installed
4. Inner pic of left light.
5. Pic of connection. The plug on the vehicle is somewhat corroded, so I purchased a short extension and plan to keep it permanently connected to the vehicle.

I used the carrier just once on a hunting trip. The lights worked fine just as I wanted them to. I did put a tarp over the items in the carried but kept it tucked inside so it wouldnt obscure the lights. I had to cut the receptacle plug from the vehicle and splice in another one which I made from the short 18 extension.

  • Recommended Cargo Bag for Pro Series # 63153 Cargo Carrier
The cargo bag I highly recommend for your Pro Series Cargo Carrier # 63153 is the etrailer Cargo Bag # 988501. It has 20 cubic feet of storage, is waterproof with PVC coated nylon, and has six tie-down straps that will secure it to your Pro Series Cargo Carrier. If you take a look at the photos I've added you can see exactly how this bag looks when used with the Pro Series. I've also attached links to video reviews of this bag for you to take a look at.

  • Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 1-1/4 inch Hitch on a Cedar Creek 5th Wheel Trailer
The Curt 20x48 Cargo Carrier, item # C18145, that you mentioned would be a great choice for your application. Using a carrier at the rear of a trailer subjects the carrier and contents to greater forces than on a vehicle, so you will need to be sure to stay well within the weight capacity of the lowest rated item, either the hitch, trailer frame, or the carrier. • 24 by 60 inch Cargo Carrier Recommendation for Use at Rear of Truck and Travel Trailer
The best hitch cargo carrier for what you are looking for is the Curt cargo carrier part # C18152 which is the size you are wanting of 24 inch by 60 inch and also because it is a fixed carrier without a folding mechanism which means it will do better at the rear of a travel trailer since hinges add movement and are typically a weaker portion. This also has a rise built into the shank which gives better ground clearance as well.
