Question:

I have a large hitch mounted bicycle rack. I would like to improve visibility by putting lights on it. Would these work?

Expert Reply:

The Optronics Sealed, Streamline LED Trailer Light # STL79RB referenced in your question will work to provide an additional light on your bike rack, however there may be easier options. You might have trouble mounting the light assembly to the rack itself and the 3-wire design will not allow for easy disconnect when you are not using the bike rack.

For an easier option, I recommend looking at the LED Light Kit # 98174LED. You can easily mount these to your bike by using the Mounting Bracket # BK70BB. If your vehicle has a 4-Way connector, this assembly also includes a harness that can be connected directly to it to simplify wiring. This will make disconnecting the bike rack and lights much easier when not in use when compared to a hardwire option like the Optronics Light you mentioned.

Another option if you are just looking to make your bike rack more visible is to simply use reflectors such as the Conspicuity Tape # 465-4K. This is a simple, economical option that you can stick on the rear of your platform rack to greatly increase nighttime visibility. I have included a video review on this product that you can look at.
