We have a 2011 Ford Flex and bought this Railed Cargo Carrier along with the Highland Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier Bag for our trip to the beach which took 4 1/2 hours one way. It held the luggage of 6 people with ease. The cargo carrier itself was solid, sturdy and we never had issues with it moving while driving. I liked the fact that it was out and above the exhaust pipe of the Flex. The cargo bag was definitely heavy duty and although we never had rain, it would have been rainproof for sure! The wife and I most definitely recommend these two items....worth every penny!!
This carrier is exactly what I needed. Assembly was very simple (even without directions). I put it together with the "assistance" of my 3-year-old in about 10 minutes. The whole process involved tightening a few bolts. It seems very sturdy, and easily supports my 230+ pounds when attached to my Explorer. In combination with the Anti-Rattle Device and Lock (63232), it sits snugly in my 2" reciever, without any movement or rattling, even at freeway speeds.
I loaded it up with a large cooler, a small cooler, a 30-pack of beverages, and some miscellaneous items inside of the Extra Large Cargo Bag (988501) and drove about 150 miles of city streets, highways, and winding country roads without the slightest problem. I never heard or felt any bouncing or rattling, and everything was safely in place when I arrived. The side rails also provide a good anchor-point for bungee cords. I highly recommend it.
Also, I can't say enough about the customer service from etrailer.com. I ordered this product on a Saturday with free shipping. Not only did they ship the product that same day, they gave me a free upgrade to priority shipping! I won't hesitate to use etrailer.com for all of my future auto-supply purchases. Great company!
This cargo-carrier is very rigid and appears to be of high quality steel. Thus, this is not something you can easily throw on and take off your vehicle. It is heavy and cumbersome to hold the weight and line up with the receiver by yourself. 2 people are recommended. Once attached, it's not going anywhere and is sturdy. The raise in the bent shank is not as much as I expected (I question the 2 and ½ inch rating) and is an issue with my exhaust pipe which is directed towards the carrier and does not provide much additional ground clearance. I already melted a tarp and popped a thermarest camp mattress from the heat off the tailpipe during a recent 1 hour trip. I like the quality of this carrier, but am now looking to adapt either a heat shield to the unit or possibly redirect the tail pipe with a new fitting. (not preferred).
After a year the hitch hauler still works great and it has stayed level and not rusted. I have seen others that have become rusted or even lean to one side but this one works great! If you are debating on buying a cheaper one, ask yourself what you are buying and spend a little extra for this heavy duty one. Adding that extra big YETI cooler is super easy for tailgates and kids bikes strap down easily. We have used it for vacations, football tailgates and camping trips. Works great and looks great too!
Bottom line: it greatly increased the carrying capacity of my 2015 Honda Odyssey, and made packing and organizing for my recent camping trip much less stressful. Combined with the Curt Cargo bag C18210 and Air Lift 60815, our minivan easily handled the camping needs for our family and our daughter's girl scout troop.
The carrier was simple to assemble, and I did not encounter any mismatched hole drillings that other reviews seemed to find on these types of carriers. It latched easily into the van's 2" hitch carrier, with plenty of clearance for the tailgate. Thank you, E-Trailer, for providing such comprehensive measurements from the hitch hole to the edge of the cargo basket. It is details like these, which keep me coming back to this website.
On the road, the carrier was rock-solid at highway speeds. I did not hear any rattling or creaks that had me second-guessing during our trip. On the way back from the campgrounds, my wife was driving a second car behind me the whole time. She did not see any swaying or gross movement of the cargo carrier, which was loaded with the following cargo:
1.) 10'x14' 10 person tent
2.) 8'x10' 5 person tent
3.) 9'x10' 6 person tent
4.) 4 sleeping bags
Just a good solid product, that I would recommend to anyone else trying to expand their vehicle's cargo carrying capacity.
Pleased, overall, with a few notes. I specifically chose this model because it sits so close to the rear bumper, and therefore doesn't overload the rear suspension of the vehicle. Ride quality is great. The wire mesh is starting to sag after a season of use. If you live in colder climates, it will show rust after a trip on salted roads (a downside, compared to aluminum carriers). Something that surprised me - I thought my receiver was perfectly level, but this rack made it obvious that was not the case. There's easily a 2" tilt from end to end, which you'd never notice with a standard ball hitch. Highly recommend an anti-rattle hitch stabilizer to really lock the whole thing in place.
Use it for camping and out yearly vacation (9 hour drive). Sturdy and easy to take on and off. No signs of bending or weakening.
Installed cargo carrier ,it fit perfect, and quality was up to a high standard, this is my forth order from etrailer and have been pleased each time . It was made heavier than I needed but will last me for years. I am well pleased and was delivered a day ahead of the time .
Used this to travel from Pa to Maine. Worked great used a locking hitch pin and all was secure.

One year later and this carrier still gets 5 stars. We have used it countless times and still is as great as it ever was.
The cargo carrier was very easy to put together and is going to make alot of extra room for vacation. The curved post keeps the carrier up but not so far that it gets in the way of the tail gait lifting. Looks great on my Ford Escape 2020. Really appreciate the fantastic customer service when I was trying to decide which carrier to buy.

It’s been working great! We use this hitch basket to carry those 27 gallon totes from Costco when going long distances and we need more space. The only downside is having to find someplace to store it.
I haven't yet assembled the Curt Cargo Carrier, but I'm always impressed by etrailer's customer service. I ordered the carrier on Saturday and within an hour I received an email stating that the carrier had shipped. etrailer's shipment tracking is way cooler than UPS, FedEx or USPS - you get to see a map with the shipment's progress on the route. And the shipment arrived on the scheduled day.

Love it. Super strong and super handy
Solid carrier. Used it to haul 2 pack & plays as well as a double stroller, so we could put our clothes & other luggage inside on a long road trip with family.
I already reviewed this product, just adding a few pictures of it on our vehicle. The hatch clears the carrier when empty, but loaded might be a different story. Just have to make sure we load the trunk first.
Easy install,quick to take apart.
Easy install of the hitch and the rack is perfect for our outdoor activities. Thanks for the help on choosing it.
Quality of the rack seems very good. Communication from etrailer was abundant, and the order arrived sooner than anticipated.
Easy to assemble, sturdy, well worth the money. I've used it to haul tools, luggage, and even a small 4 wheeler from SC to TX and back again. It has a tendency to rock back and forth, but I usually just include a strap or two back to the chain stays on my expedition, and it stops the wobble.
This cargo carrier is sturdy. I didn't have any problems putting it together. I took with me on a trip to Kansas City with my kids to hold our luggage. I have two teen boys and we are running out of space in the car. It's been nice to be able to just throw some stuff in the cargo carrier instead of using our roof bag. The only thing that would make it better is if it had a lighting feature.

Hi Heather, it's so convenient to be able save space in the car during a road trip, especially with the family! There is a way to install a light kit on your Curt Cargo Carrier part # C18150 that you have. Please keep in mind this will take some modification. The kit you would want is the part # 98174LED. To mount this kit on the carrier you would want the part # BK70BB. In order to mount the brackets you will need to drill holes into the rails of the carrier. Let me know what you think.
Ordered on a Sunday and carrier was on my porch by Tuesday afternoon. Great communication of order and delivery via confirmation emails. Finally assembled and tested it out on my Colorado. Fits well and seems durable enough for hauling what I intend. The anti-rattle device installed easily and will hopefully extend the carrier's lifetime. Unboxing to completion took approx 30 minutes. Very satisfied so far. Great customer service, as well.
Great quality and serves its purpose. I wish I ordered the slightly bigger one to fit the bins and items I use it for. For example, a white standard igloo cooler doesn’t fit the way I need it to maximize loading capacity. I highly recommend a stabilizer to prevent wobble.
Easy to assemble, sturdy and rode well. Went on a fishing trip to Canada with my Avalanche and not a lot of storage in those beds. Bought a couple large totes and we packed them full. Had plenty of room for the rest of the stuff in the truck. Used a few tie downs and a couple ratchet straps and we were good to go.
This product is good to go! It's been a year now. It's been thru two deer seasons and a couple 1k mile round trips. I've stood on it with no problem (stay on the bars and not on the mesh obviously). I recommend picking up a hitch-clamp to put on it to entirely eliminate any rattle on the hitch.
Very nice quality. Took one person and two wrench about 15 minutes to install the cargo carrier from box. It is very sturdy and the finish is very good. I really like the added height this specific carrier provides.

One year later: Used this carrier during the winter months traveling from New York to California and back. About 9000 miles of driving with the carrier loaded with gears, it was such a great alternative to roof rack carriers. I was able to get around 30-34 mpg with this carrier installed compared to around 22mpg with a roof rack carrier.
