Video Transcript for A Closer Look at the Curt Roof Mounted Cargo Basket on a 2019 Chevrolet Trax

Hey everybody, Zach here at etrailer.com. Today we're taking a look at our Curt Roof Basket on our 2019 Chevrolet Trax. This basket is gonna be a good way to utilize your roof space, be able to carry some cargo or some gear to free up some of that space on the inside. The Trax isn't a very big vehicle, you already know that, and this is gonna do a good job to give you a little bit more space whether it's your friends or family or if you just wanna carry extra gear for a trip. Now, when it comes to how much stuff you can put up here it's gonna be a weight capacity of 150 pounds. Now, I have it on a Curt Raised Rail Roof Rack System, it is also 150 pound weight capacity.

But you always wanna check with the owner's manual of the vehicle, or if you have a different roof rack system on here and go with whichever of those numbers is the lowest. You don't want to overdo it by any means. So, I like that these two match up it makes it a little bit easier whenever it comes time to check in the owner's manual. 150 pounds is a significant amount of weight in my opinion but it's still gonna be it option to get some suitcases, maybe a cooler up there, some of those larger bulkier items. Now, when it comes to what type of stuff you can fit up here you can see I got a decent size cooler up here to give you a little perspective.

Now, the site list it at 41 and a half by 37 inches. And that's true if we're going from the bottom. But for me, actual usable space is gonna be this top point. And that's gonna be 37 by 37. Yeah, so, 37 inches by 37 inches side to side here.

That 41 and a half is gonna come from this bottom. So here, this fairing, if you take that outta the equation, which you could take that off if you had longer items but that's where that 41 and a half comes in. Something I do like is that we're getting from the bottom there. I'm measuring it at five inches from the base to the top there. So, that's given us some good depth there.

That kinda changes a little bit depending on where it sits on these bars. But all around we're getting nice tie down points to use some good straps. I really like the etrailer straps that we have. Those are gonna be a really nice option for you. So we're getting good spots to tie down, plenty of space to fit some bags up there. The fairing I briefly mentioned, that's gonna do a good job of kinda getting wind up over items. We think that these are gonna do a really nice job of cutting down on that wind noise. You're putting something on your roof, it's definitely gonna be noisy but this helps kind of shift some of that wind up and not getting caught with all of your gear back there. And when it comes to how much height it's adding our vehicle, I'm gonna go off of the crossbars we're using today. It is adding seven inches to the top of our crossbar. So still fairly low profile but still gives us a really nice sized basket. When it comes to the finish it's got a nice kinda textured powder coat to it. A lot of the glossy finish ones that I've handled with the amount of moving around and testing we do, I feel like those get scratched up fairly easy. And this one's been out in the shop quite a bit. And there's some little nicks here and there where it's scraped up against some white paint. But it does a a good job of holding up. It's set outside for a while, the hardware's a little rusty, but overall the basket is still in really good shape. How it's held onto our crossbars is with this U bolt clamp style design. So we're getting a little platform here to kinda make it even and attach it to the crossbar. And then this rubberized U bolt attaches through this metal bracket on top. So it squeezes it and clamps itself to the crossbar. I like the rubberized U bolt a lot. When it comes to installing, sometimes you're gonna make contact with your roof. It's just gonna happen, you're putting metal objects up there. And this helps cut down with the risk of damage. Insulation's pretty straight forward, most roof baskets install very similar to this. So let's just walk you through how we got this one put in place. I have three of my four mounting locations already fastened down. So I'm gonna take this piece right here, this is gonna sit on top of our crossbars and those slots, or slots in the roof basket are gonna slide right into that. So I'm gonna get this fed in there, get that put in place. And I'm gonna take my U bolt and I've got it started already. And get this fed up over there And it's gonna sit, the metal piece will sit right on top of our basket and then our U-bolt will come from underneath. And you can see how it lines right up in that groove. We'll get it fed up through the metal bracket. And then I'm gonna take my second knob and start tightening that down. And we can just go back and forth and get this tightened evenly. Now, one thing I found with this style design is the bolts over here are sticking up pretty high. So I have this on a fairly thin Curt Roof Rack. If you're using another brand with a little bit larger bar, something from Rhino Rack or Yakima, this bolt won't stick up as high. If I put a soft sided bag up here it potentially could catch on that and it would tear. So, If you're using a thin crossbar like this I would consider cutting those off, that's one downside to this style. It is gonna be a really nice tight fit once we get this tightened down all the way. But I've gotta tighten out all the way. So it's gonna take a little bit time to do that and then we're gonna have that extra bolt sitting up top. So, If you're using the Curt one or a thinner bar like a round or square bar, you're probably gonna run into this as well. So we're just gonna go back and forth and tighten this down and take some time, but we'll get there. All right, so you can see there I've got quite a bit of threads sticking up on both sides. So, definitely gonna cause issues down the road. So, if I was gonna leave this on here permanently I'm for sure cutting those off. There are definitely other options out there but this kinda economical one, I think this is still gonna be a really solid basket for you, it's gonna give us a nice tight fit. So you can see I'm shaking the whole vehicle there. It's gonna be a really good basket for you, gonna be able to give you a lot more space for your Trax to be able to get a lot of cargo up there and free up some space in the vehicle for you. That's gonna do it for a look at the cargo basket from Curt on a 2019 Chevrolet Trax..

Product recieved as stated. Mounted on 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman with Mini base system. Very satisfied with this basket. Looks real good on car. A little noise traveling on a windy day but nothing that is all that bothersome.

Good product, fast shipping and service.

by:

Fast shipping easy to assemble haven't mounted to my son's 2016 crosstrek yet

by:

The service from etrailer was great! The product was shipped and received incredibly fast. This is The actual product itself was bent a little but was still able to put together and was missing a nut for one of the bolts. I have no real complaints and would definitely buy again.

Needed a small rack for gas cans and chainsaws. This fits the bill. Not a high end cargo rack but it fits my needs. If you need more space or a burly rack, get something more expensive.

Thule aeroblade w/ Curt rack. Used this Christmas for a family trip to Gatlinburg, TN and through the Smokey Mountains. It worked great to get all our gear there and back! Thanks for getting it to us on time.

Looks great and fit perfectly on my 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Sport!!!I should have ordered a cargo net. I will have to now!!

I just receivef the rooftop carrier. Installation was very easy and it looks great and seems very sturdy. I think it will work well for carrying extra cargo.

How did you install the brackets by the rear side windows, Im curious about because some rangers dont have the doors that opens up to the extended part of the cab.

The truck in this photos did have the half-door that opens. If you have the extended cab that does not have the rear doors, then a Q Stretch Kit can be added to the rest of the kit to achieve the proper bar spread and add move the rear anchor port forward to the door. Check the link below to the roof rack fits for a 2011 Ranger.

I ordered the Curt basket and extension and both boxes arrived a day early which was great. Both products were easy to assemble and attach to my Thule rack system even with only the instructions in Spanish to go by. The faring arrived with a huge crack, but etrailer was great! They were able send me a replacement with no issues or charges which was amazing.

by:

Works great, but takes some slight modification if you don’t want the bolts to poke through anything you have stored up there. Could be less of a problem depending on the cross bars you use, but I bought Curt’s cross bars and the bolts stick up pretty far.

Just what I wanted, Super Fast Shipping!!! :) A+

I am a new customer and must say that I will continue to be one. etrailer's ease of website ordering, fast turnaround, courteous emails and excellent order tracking made for a fantastic experience. The Curt Cargo basket is well made and easy to assemble. Compared to the price of other baskets, this one is a great deal!

Thanks etrailer. I look forward to purchasing from you in the future.

Easy to install

by:

It's strong, sturdy, and looks good. The bolts were a little long, and protruded into the cargo area of the basket, but that's to be expected because it has to be able to fit all different size crossbars. I just cut them shorter, but some people who don't have access to our experience with tools will have to deal with those bolts sticking up.

by:

I am pleased with the quality of workmanship of the Curt roof cargo basket. The Curt was installed on a new 2021 Subaru Outback. This additional space will serve us well on road trips. Thank you in your promptness to ship the rack.

by:

The Curt cargo basket seem , good , for the price . Easy to put together all hardware seems good . Only concern is the threaded clamps seems a bit weak and not rust proof . Wish they had an option to purchase better quality clamps .

I recently purchased Curt Roof Rack and Curt Roof Cargo Basket from Etrailer for my 2024 Toyota 4Runner TRD Sport and the product was excellent, easy to install and Etrailer rep Mr. Mike B having great experiences and very helpful with the products. Thank you!

I've had this roof basked for a year now, and it has done very well for us so far. I mount this to my 2023 Subaru Outback XT Onyx Edition for when we take family trips that require more gear than will fit in the cargo area. It allows my son to remain comfortable in the back seat (he's a sprawler with gadgets and books on long trips) while making sure that we have all the gear we need. On week-long trips to both Canaan Valley, WV and Lewes Delaware, we were able to strap our cooler and other weatherproof gear into the basket with ease. The mounting system is plenty sturdy, and the basket was able to fit a lot of cargo easily and safely. It didn't retain water in the tubes or connecting pieces after several rain storms, and I haven't seen any evidence of rust so far.

I should note that I don't leave it mounted to the car 24/7 because I don't pretend to be some overland fanatic, so it lives in my furnace room (easily supported by aluminum brackets tap-conned into the cinderblock wall) when not in use. This will definitely give it a longer lifespan. I'd definitely buy one again. The size is perfect for my Outback and fits plenty of gear.

I am very pleased with the quality for the price.Just the right size for my 2017 Chevy Trax.the "U" bolts that are used to clamp the basket to the roof cross bars were a bit long so I cut them shorter & installed rubber caps on top of each stud. This keeps the studs from damaging items in the bssket.See pictures.

The product is great, but I have removed it for now because when its mounted on the car it reduces my gas mileage 7-8 miles per gallon. I was shocked at how much of impact it made. Im now able to get 100 miles further on a tank of gas. Thats a big deal when Im paying California gas prices.

by:

The reason I bought this basket is due to gas prices. I have a 4X4 suburban I use for camping and hunting but it takes a small loan to fill up the tank. Actually this basket cost less than it does to fill it up. So my thought was if i can get all my gear on my daily driver then i could save some money and maybe even sale the burb. So i gave it a shot last weekend. The rack was easy to put together. I had it out of the box and on the roof in under 30 minutes. As you can see in the pic, i have a rather large ice chest, chain saw, 6 man tent, gas stove and my chair on the roof. My camping destination was about 3 hours away. First was a hour of highway driving at speeds around 70. No issues there. Then 2 hours of windy back roads. No issues there either. The basket made it possible for me and my two kids to load up in the car and head to the hills for three days. The plus for me was it only takes 50$ to fill up the car. :-) I had the max weight in this basket with no issues. I'm very happy with this basket.

Jamie, thanks for replying to David's question. David, this Curt Cargo Carrier works on most aftermarket roof racks, and fits crossbars up to 3 inches wide, and 1-5/8 inches tall. This should work well on your existing Yakima roof rack. The top bars on this Curt cargo basket are indeed round, and are a little smaller than 1 inch. I measured one from our warehouse, and it was 0.88 of an inch which is about 7/8 of an inch.

by:

Average product and fits my needs, however quality control is not the best with missing nuts and mounting pads incorrect (supposed to be 2 of M699 and 2 of M700) with 3 M699 and 1 M700. I had to find a new screw and nut to mount the fairing. The mounting hardware to the cross bars are below average with being cumbersome to tighten and loosen and too long sticking up into basket creating a hazard for your gear.

The rack and basket look great on your car, Alexander! What are you going to load up there?

by:

I have not used it yet, but it feels sturdy. I fit it to the roof racks of my wifes 2019 suburban and it fits great! It will not live on the truck, so I will be installing/removing per camping trip needs.

One issue I see is the nylok nuts are not a single piece with the knobs. The knob has a cradle that fits the nut perfectly, so no tool will be needed (which is nice), but you have to hold tension in the opposite direction when tightening.

I may go out and buy a single piece knob if it gets to that, but other than that small complaint, this item will serve our needs perfectly.

by:

Just what I needed to complete my roadtrip Ford Ranger. The rooftop cargo basket frees up space in the cab and looks great. The right size and a solid quality part from “etrailer”

  • Roof Cargo Basket Availability that Can Have a Bike Rack Mounted to It
I have a solution for you, but the Curt basket you mentioned does not have the ability to install a bike rack on it. The Thule Canyon XT basket part # TH859XT does have the ability for a bike rack to be installed on it though. For a fork mount you could use the part # Y02115 or for a wheel mount you could then use the # TH598004 . I attached review videos for all three items for you to check out as well.

  • Roof Cargo Basket Recommendation to Fit Crossbar Spread of 27-1/2 inches
The crossbar spacing the Curt roof basket part # C18115 can fit is 15", 22", or 29". Your best option for a cargo basket will most likely be the Rhino Rack Cargo Basket part # RMCB as it will fit crossbar spreads of 21-30 inches

  • Availability of Extension for MaxxTow Roof Mounted Cargo Basket
There is not an extension available for the MaxxTow Roof Mounted Cargo Basket MT70115 that you referenced. • How Much Does the Curt Roof Mounted Cargo Basket Part # C18115 Weigh
The Curt Roof Mounted Cargo Basket part # C18115 weighs approximately 29 lbs. It is 41-1/2" long x 37" wide x 4" deep and has a weight capacity of 150 lbs though you will want to consult your owner's manual for the vehicle's roof weight capacity as the lower of the two will be your limiting factor. Please also keep in mind that the crossbars on your vehicle will need to be spaced 15", 22", or 29" apart on center in order for the cargo basket to work. If you need a cargo net for this basket...

  • Replacement Knob for Curt C18115 Roof Mounted Cargo Basket
The Thule replacement hand knob, part # 753-0783 fits a 6 mm diameter U-bolt, so it won't work with the 3/16 inch diameter U-bolt on your Curt Roof Cargo Basket like # C18115. At present, we don't offer a replacement knob although Curt tells us there will be a replacement hardware kit available by the end of 2020. In the meantime, I'd recommend you go to your local hardware store and obtain a 3/16 inch wing nut, which will work fine for you until Curt releases the hardware kit in a month...
