Video Transcript for Saris Cable Lock and Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Saris 8' Cable Lock and Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock for Saris hitch-mounted bike racks, part number SA984. This kit comes with an 8' locking cable and a locking hitch pin so you can be certain that both your bikes and your bike rack are safe. The cable itself is 10 mm braided steel with a vinyl coating, so it's going to be corrosion resistant and it's going to protect your bike's finish. Both our lock here and the lock down here on our hitch pin are keyed alike so we don't have to worry about multiple keys. Two keys are included however. Both locks feature a dust cap so we can keep dirt and debris out of our locking cores. Now that we go where the features are good and show you how to get it installed.

We're working with the Saris access two-bike rack here today, but this is going to work with any of your Saris applications. As you can see, without the anti-rattle hitch pin lock installed, we've got a lot of play and movement in our bike rack. What we're going to do, is we're going to go ahead and insert that lock. We'll take our anti-rattle hitch pin lock, and we're going to insert here in the driver side. You always want to go through the driver side.

We'll get that through, and going to hand tighten that down. We'll grab our 3/4" wrench and tighten that down. What that's going to do, is it's going to pull our shank to the left, tightening it up inside our receiver, reducing all the movement within our bike rack. As you can see, most of that play and rattle is gone. We'll just place our lock here on the passenger side till it clips in place, put on our dust cap, and we've got it. I've gone ahead and loaded up a couple bikes that we can run our cable through.

I'm going to start right here, work my way back. I'm going to come through the arms of the bike rack, back through around the down tube. I work my way back to the front. As you can see, there's enough cable here to go around four bikes, but since I just have two, I'm going to take some of the slack out by wrapping it around the bike. Once I've got that, I'll come up and I'll go through the loop, then I can grab my lock, put it in place, put on my dust cap. As you can see, my bikes are secured to my bike rack, and we're ready to hit the road.

That's going to complete our look at the Saris 8' Cable Lock and Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock for Saris hitch mounted bike racks, part number SA984.

Ask the Experts about this Saris Bike Locks

  • Hitch Lock and Cable Lock Recommendation for Reese Q-Slot Bike Rack
We have found that the Saris Hitch Locks do fit the Reese Q-Slot platform rack # PS63138 that you mentioned so this would work well to give the rack a hitch lock and cable lock # SA984. This will allow you to lock the rack to your vehicle as well as long the bikes to the rack. Essentially the hitch lock is a # SA3022.

  • Cable Lock And Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock for Saris Hitch Mounted Bike Racks
We sure do have the part you are looking for. The Saris Cable lock And Anti-Rattle hitch Lock is part # SA984. This kit helps secure the carrier to the trailer hitch and also the bikes to the carrier.

  • Can Saris Bike Rack Lock be Used on a Thule Bike Rack
Bike rack manufaturers thread their hitch pins so they are specific to their racks. So the Saris lock, part # SA984, will not work on a Thule rack. For a Thule lock use part # THSTL2 for the htich pin and # TH538XT for the cable. They can then be keyed a like with lock cores # TH450200.

  • Recommended Hitch and Cable Lock for Swagman XC 2-Bike Rack
I do have a solution for you, however the Saris Cable Lock and Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock # SA984 that you referenced will not work with your Swagman XC 2-Bike Rack # S64650. This is because the shank on the Swagman rack features a uniquely threaded hitch pin hole that will only allow it to work with Swagman locks. For a cable lock and hitch lock set that will work perfectly with your Swagman Bike Rack, I instead recommend the Swagman # S64031. This includes a 7 foot cable lock and threaded...

  • Bumper Clearance on RockyMounts West Slope 2 on 2017 Subaru Forester
I have a solution for you, but because the RockyMounts West Slope 2 Bike Rack # RKY10222 only has 5" of clearance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bike rack when folded up, it may not be the best choice. I recommend going with the Hollywood Racks Trail Rider 2 # HR200Z is going to provide you with 12-1/8" of clearance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack when folded up, but is going to stick out 30" from the rear of your vehicle when...

  • Will Smaller Kids Bike Fit the Freedom SuperClamp EX # SA4026F
I do have a solution for you but when I spoke with my contact at Saris he said that the smallest diameter tire that the Freedom SuperClamp EX # SA4026F can accommodate is a 20" wheel. Since your kids bike is smaller than that you wouldn't be able to use this bike rack. Instead you would want to use a frame mount bike rack like the Yakima FourTimer # Y02469. Since this rack doesn't secure the bikes by their wheels the cradles can be moved closer to accommodate the smaller bike. The ratcheting...

  • Recommended Lightweight Bike Racks for a 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser
I have a few recommendations for you and your 2013 FJ Cruiser. The first is going with the full on hitch mounted rack. This is less than economical, but adds a valuable element of flexibility and additional features to your vehicle that you may find useful later on for other applications, such as cargo carriers or light trailer hauling. For the FJ Cruiser, I recommend adding the Draw-Tite Class III, part # 75461. This gives you a wide range of bike racks for the future if you need...

Consumers of aftermarket products are protected by the Federal Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act. • Towing a QuickSilver LIvin Lite Camper and Bike Rack with a 2007 Ford Freestyle
I have a solution for you, however I can't recommend using an adapter to resize the receiver for use of a bike rack. Primarily, the 2 inch to 1-1/4 inch receivers are not useable when towing, as the stress added to the adapter can cause failure of the pin or the receiver itself, plus anything inside the receiver. The short-style wagon design of the Ford Freestyle opens up a few easy alternatives to using the trailer hitch as a towing option. This has the added benefit of letting you...

  • Hitch Pin Lock for an XPort 2 Bike Rack
I have a solution for you, however part # SR0901 is designed to fit the threading of a SportRack bike rack, and likely won't work with your XPort 2. We've found in the past that later versions of the XPort, the Q-Slot, work well with Saris' hitch pin locking set, part # SA3022. You can get a cable lock add on for this set as part # SA984 if you'd like to fully upgrade your rack's security. This isn't a guaranteed fit, however we've had reports that it may work.

  • Carrying 6 Bikes on a 2012 Honda Odyssey
There's a couple ways to do this, but the first thing you'll want to verify is your vehicle's towing capacity and roof capacity with your manufacturer to make sure you don't exceed your capacity. A quick tip on this setup is that the two 16 inch bikes are likely best carried in the rear cargo area of the vehicle, as there's only a few hitch racks that can carry them. Either way, you'll need to attach a hitch to get the best capacity out of your vehicle. I recommend using the Draw-Tite...

If you are needing to transport more than 2 bikes, I recommend purchasing our Pro Series Q-Slot Platform-Style 2 Bike and 4 Bike Rack # PS63138. This bike rack can handle bikes with tires up to 4-1/2 inches and 48 inch wheel bases. The wheel cradles can be individually swapped to 5 inch cradles with part # SA4419. • What Size Wrench or Socket for Bolt Head of 8' Cable Lock and Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock # SA984
I spoke with my contact at Saris and she told me that the size socket/wrench needed for the bolt on the # SA984 that you referenced would be a 19 mm or a 3/4 inch. So the wrench part # PT20104-38524 that you referenced would work with it.

  • Interchangeable Trailer Hitch Bike Rack for a 2010 Honda CR-V and a 2013 Toyota RAV4
Your best compatibility is going to be if both your 2013 Toyota RAV 4 and 2010 Honda CR-V have Class III trailer hitches, as this allows access to the widest range of bike racks to transfer between the two vehicles. Picking a rack for multiple vehicles does have a few extra considerations, the weight and classes of the two vehicle's hitches. For this situation, I tend to recommend the Saris racks, as they tend to be extremely strong, lightweight racks that are easy to pick up and...

  • Replacement Lock for Threaded Hitch Pin on Saris SuperClamp EX
For a replacement locking hitch pin on your Saris SuperClamp EX # SA4025F you need part # SA3022. Just the yellow piece isn't replaceable so you'll get the threaded hitch pin with it as well. We don't have a way to match this lock core to your current lock core so if you'd like everything to be keyed alike you need part # SA984 instead which provides you with a slightly different style cable lock.

So the Xport Flatbed you have is an older version of what is now known as the Reese Q-Slot which we've found that the Saris locking hitch pin part # SA3022 does fit. The # SR0901 does not fit your bike so we don't recommend it. Since you are concerned about the securing of the bikes to the rack as well you'd instead want the part # SA984 which comes with a cable lock as well so that you can lock the bikes to the rack and the rack to the hitch.

One of the absolute best racks for an electric bike across a lot of vehicles is the Saris Freedom, part # SA4412B. This rack is able to carry two 60 pound bikes, and with adjustable, rotating frame clamps is able to handle a wide variety of frame types. Based on my research your bike is 25.5 kg which is just over 56 lbs, so this rack will accommodate your bike as it is rated for up to 60 lbs per bike. For your 2012 Lexus GX 460, you're probably going to be better off picking up a hanging rack over a platform rack, as there aren't any swing-away 4 bike platform racks. Additionally, because of the way that the rear of the GX 460 opens, the hanging rack will work a little better overall with the rear hatch. I have a solution for you, but I can't recommend using a hanging rack to transport recumbent bikes with this design. My largest concern with both of these, but especially with the Bacchetta Corsa, is that the chains could catch in the upright posts and damage or break them. Additionally, because the seats are not easily removable, you'd be unable to use an adapter bar to make transporting them easier. Instead, I recommend adding a hitch to the Prius and obtaining a dedicated recumbent...

This will allow you to lock the bikes to the rack and the rack to the hitch. I attached a review video for this lock setup for you to check out as well.
