Video Transcript for Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit Installation - 2013 Fiat 500

Today on our 2013 Fiat 500 we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Roadmaster Crossbar Style Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms.So here's what our base plate is going to look like once we have it installed in our Fiat. And this is going to serve as the attachment point that our tow bar is going to hook up to so we can safely flat tow it down the road. What I really like about our base plate is the fact that these arms are going to be removable. You just twist them and pull them out and then we'll have a really low profile look where it's not going to be changing a whole lot, 'cause we can always remove the safety cables and quick disconnects if we would like as well.To put it in and it's going be just as easy. Slide it in and rotate it, it'll lock it into position. Our base plate is going to be compatible with quick disconnect bars as well as all Roadmaster tow bars.

So there's gonna be a real easy way to hook up so we can get down the road. Like most base plates, our safety chain connection points going to be out towards the edge, and they do provide us with some quick links and some short extension cables. That way we can make sure we have enough room to hook up to our motor home. They're also going to provide us with two prongs here. That way we can mount up any kind of electrical socket, whether it's a four, five or six way, it'll be ready for us whenever we tow.As far as the installation goes, we are going to have to remove the front fascia and do some minor trimming in the lower grill here, but this is going to be a very straightforward installation as far as base plates go. Let's show you how to do that now.To begin the installation, we're going to want to open up the hood on our Fiat and right underneath we'll have four fasteners along the front edge that we're going to have to pull out.

So want to grab a T30 torques bit and pull them out. Then if we move underneath the front, we're going to have three more fasteners that are just like it. So go ahead and pull those out as well. I removed in the outside edge on the front, we're going to have a Phillips screw that's holding the fascia to the inner fender liner here. So I'm going to grab a Phillips bit or a screwdriver and we're going to pull that out.You want to make sure you pull the screw out from both sides. Next we're going to move to the front of our front wheel well.

We're going to have three fasteners that are holding it in place. So again, we'll grab a Phillips bit or a Phillips screwdriver and we're going to pull out three screws on both sides. Once you have the screws removed, we'll peel back the liner and we're going to want to find where the fender meets the fascia here and if we look up, we're going to have another one of those torques fasteners that's holding it in place. So we can grab our T30 torques bit and we'll pull that screw out.Now is we pull back our liner, we are going to have this reflector and light right here. You want to make sure you unplug that before we started to pull our fascia away.

So we'll press in on the tab, pull the connector out, and we'll repeat that for the other side as well. Now would be a good idea to grab an extra set of hands and we'll start where our fender meets our fascia and we're going to start pulling away till the clips start releasing, working our way towards the center. Now if you didn't unplug your lights, now would be a good time to unplug your fog lights, your headlights, any other electrical connectors that may be connected. Around this wire that does go across the front, it would go to the driver's side and we'll have this connector here. We'll push in on the tab, we can disconnect it, but the plug is still going to be attached, so we're going to want to pull that plug off so we can pull the fascia aside and set it somewhere where it won't get damaged. Behind the fascia, we'll have our bumper beam that's going to be held on by two bolts on the bottom here and two large bolts on top as well as one small nut. So I'll grab a 15 millimeter socket. I'm going to start pulling out all the bolts. And for that small nut on top, I'm actually going to take a little bit of spray lubricant because ours has quite a bit of rust on it. We'll let it soak and we're going to come back with a 10 millimeter socket and pull the nut off. And we're gonna pull our bumper beam off and set aside. We're going to want to grab all of our factory bolts that we pulled out from earlier. I want to put a little bit of Loctite on each one of them before we put our base plate up. Now you want to make sure you put red Loctite on all your hardware before you torque everything down. We're going to line up the end of our base plate with the four holes and we'll take one of our bolts that has the Loctite on it and you want to make sure that you at least get it started hand tight, one on each side. That way our base plate will support itself. We don't have to worry about it falling down. I'm going to come back with that 15 millimeter socket and I'm going to snug up all my hardware. I'm going to come back with a torque wrench and torque all my hardware down to the specified amount in the instructions. And you want to make sure you go back and you repeat that all the remaining hardware you have. With our base plate torqued down, I'm going to hold my fascia as close as I can to the factory position, because we're going to have to trim out a little bit in the lower grill area so that our arms can come through as well as the electrical connectors. So I'm just going to take a marker. I'm going to mark out the areas that need to be trimmed. It's going around the edge here. I'm going to cut out everything in between the marks that I made. So I'm going to be removing all of this. We'll measure out everything on the other side. We'll trim that as well.I'm just going to use a pair of tin snips. Use whatever you have available, razor knife, a pair of cutters or a Dremel tool. You just want to take your time and I always suggest you cut as little as possible, because we can always come back and cut more if we need to. And test this cut and then we can always come back and clean up the edges as necessary. As you can see our cuts made plenty of room, and even for our electrical connector here, it does fit in between the honeycomb grill. So now we can go ahead and fully put our fascia back on and plug all the electrical connectors back in and put all the fasteners back that we took out.Now the final steps can be attaching our quick links and safety cables to our base plate. The bottom of the receiver there will have a tab on each side. We'll slide our quick link over and we'll take our short safety cable, put it on the end. We'll make sure everything's nice and closed up and tight. We'll do this on both sides. So we can grab the arm now. That's going to be a flat spot. If we look on the other side of the two, there should be a flat spot with a notch. You want that notch to be pointing down when we put it in there, we'll put it in and then we'll rotate it towards the outside and that'll lock it into place. Now one quick tip. If you don't want this short safety cable to be banging around, scratching up the front of your car, you just take a zip tie, you can actually use the front of your base plate to just hold it up out of the way. They don't need to be real tight. Just loose enough to keep that cable away from sliding around. That'll finish up your look at the Roadmaster Crossbar Style Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms on our 2013 Fiat 500.

2012 Fiat Sport

After comparing Demco, RoadMaster, and Blue Ox base plate costs, mounting procedures, etc for my 2012 Fiat Sport, I decided to go with RoadMaster (Kit #522013-1A) for two main reasons: 1) I had the tow bar and mount adapters from another product that were the same specs as the RoadMaster tow bar and adapters to attach to the base plate, and 2) no drilling or other modifications required to mount the base plates. Blue Ox (Kit #BX2800) required I buy their tow bar and other unique configuration adapters PLUS drill two half-inch holes on either side where the base plate mounted AND hammering flat the tips on the corners of the bumper bracket the frame where the base plate mounted. Blue Ox did provide better details on the removal of the facia and bolt removal and torquing actions required for the Fiat. My biggest challenge was the removal of the facia without damaging the clips or other damage to it. Once it was off, the action of removing the bumper core from the end of the frame rails and bolting on the base plate was slick! I took a little over 4 hours to do this, but it was because I wanted to do it right, without damage, and have the confidence I could tow without issues. (Not sure how sequence will show, but labeled the pictures as "Before," "Removal," "Installation," "Finished," and "Ready to Tow.") 230093

Hate that every 3,000 miles towing have to re-torque bolts of base plate. Good product otherwise.

Thanks for the feedback Bill. You bring up a very good point, I am sure it is pain, but it is specified in the instructions.

Good product. Only problem is: when the tow bar brackets are installed into the main reciever (mounted on the towed vehicle) they don't sit level across the top. I was worried the tow bar wouldn't mount. There was just enough adjustment in the mounting holes to make it fit. Other than that a good product and is hidden very well when not in use. 152349

I bought and installed base plate and wiring on a 2018 Ford C-Max hybrid car. The wiring was a little complicated due to the hybrid setup on the car, however, everything worked out well. I have done this on several other cars I have towed behind my motorhomes. All products and help from etrailer.com was excellent. The video presentation was very helpful. 679941

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ2 in Base Plates

I received the Roadmaster base plate on Friday. On Saturday, my daughter and I had some nice bonding time to install it on the CMax together. We took our time following the video instructions step by step and got it done in about 4 hours including all the breaks, clean up and test drive. Really wasn't any problem at all. We were missing one lock washer but secured a replacement easily at the hardware store. Did have some difficulty getting the flat metal backing plate to square up with the hole on the driver's side. Some minor grinding on the side of the plate provided enough room for it to finally line it up with the bolt. I am very impressed with the engineering of the baseplate. Looking forward to receiving the other components so I can complete the job. 199081

Instructions were great , it all fit up well. They did mention in the instructions that the bumper support may be hard to drill. It was next to impossible. Had to blow a small hole with a torch , then start with a 3/16" drill and work up to a 1/2" in 1/16" steps. Turned a 2 hour job into a 4 hour. Other than that the install went great. Thanks, 110527

Comments

Though a torch would work, it is probably not the most recommended method. There are a lot of frames and bumper structures in modern cars that are made of hardened steel which can make drilling difficult. As always, a good sharp bit should be used. High pressure and low drill speed is the most effective way to drill through metals. If the drill is turning quickly, the bit will tend to skim along the surface, generate a lot of heat and wear the bit faster all while not ever getting a good bite into the material. Sometimes a cutting tool, like a Rotabroach, is the best way to cut through the hardened steels. Check part 6810 for the 12 inch size.

Great product and installation went very smoothly. Installed myself in about 2 hours. Fit perfectly and mounted easily to the car. My Stowmaster tow bar mounted right up to it. I deliver motor homes for a living and can already see how this setup is going to save me lots of time and aggravation over old fixed tow bar set-up I had previously. 498530

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ2 in Base Plates

This was the second base plate kit from etrailer that I have installed, the first being on our ‘03 Outback and this one on our new to us 2015 Subaru CrossTrek. As usual the response, shipping and delivery from etrailer was prompt and curious. They are my go to place for anything towing related. Installation of this kit went well with only a few issues, most of which were related to our vehicle not the kit. I knew the car had been hit lightly on the LF corner, but could find nothing of concern body or frame wise when I looked the car over before buying it. Turns out the front bumper reinforcement had been tweaked a tad which made lining the bolt holes up with the holes in the base plates a tad challenging. This made the small angle brackets that go inside the frame heads tough to line up, but in the end it all fit. I did find that it was unnecessary to pull the washer reservoir or the left headlight to access the nut and washer for the long 1/2” bolt. You can easily reach and see the place from underneath after pulling the plastic encapsulation panel. When drilling that 1/2” hole be sure to angle the drill bit UP a tad otherwise you may end up having to grind a flat on the side of the large, thick washer as you can see in my picture from underneath. I used shrink wrap over the nut and bolt since there’s a wiring harness right against it. The picture of the baseplate differs a bit from the pictures so I guess they made some changes. All in all a great kit! 612040

I installed it on a 2012 mini Cooper S. The video was of a slightly different model than mine, but was very helpful. One thing to note is that the model S has a turbo charger so it has two plastic air intakes in the lower bumper area. That was not mentioned in the instructions or the video.
