  Hey Brent, I have no idea why there are different pintle hitch designs. I do know that Curt changed the pintle mount attachment that comes with the 20,000 lbs Curt Pintle Hook item # C45908. Basically you will need to replace your current A-frame coupler with a channel coupler like part # LR76VR. This will allow you to install a lunette ring like part # DM09557-81.   I went out to our warehouse to measure the Curt Pintle Hook # C45908 to get the measurements you asked for. I put it together and used digital calipers to ensure this measurement was as accurate as possible and found that it measured approximately 13.7" from the center of the furthest hitch pin hole to the middle of the ball and 12.7" from the center of the closest hitch pin hole to the center of the ball.

• How to Remove Ball from Pintle Hitch
  It will depend on which pintle hitch you have. Some like the Curt # C45908 have removable trailer balls, some do not. If the trailer ball has a nut on the underside of the pintle, the ball should be removable. It it does not, the ball isn't removable. If the ball on your pintle is held on with a nut and lock washer, once you remove the nut you should be able to rap the end of the shank a few times with a dead blow hammer at which time the ball should come loose.
