Video Transcript for What to Know About the 2" Hitch Ball-C40004

Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at Etrailer and today we're taking a look at the Curt two inch ball for a ball mount. This is gonna be for a one-inch shank and have a weight capacity of 6,000 pounds. Now when choosing a ball to hook up to your trailer and tow, you obviously wanna make sure that you have the same diameter as your coupler and this one's gonna be a two inch ball so it matches up well with our trailer that we're gonna tow today. The trailer's also rated at 5,000 pounds max capacity and this one has a 6,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. So we are totally safe there. And some of your other components that you're gonna wanna make sure match up to the trailer weight is also gonna be your ball mount, the hitch, and also the vehicle.

So check all of those. Make sure that you're not gonna be under the weight that the trailer could be. That way you're gonna stay safe. Now there's plenty of combos that you can come up with as far as your ball mount with a rise and a drop and also the ball because of the different sizes. But just make sure that the shank is gonna be the same.

So this one is a one inch shank. You're gonna wanna check your ball mount to make sure that this tightens down. And also your weight capacities need to play ball with all of the rest of the components. Now keep in mind if you're choosing a separate ball and ball mount combo you are gonna need to torque down the ball. Some of them you can get pre-torqued and that's a nice feature but the ability to get the ball that you want means that you are gonna have to take a torque wrench to this and torque it down pretty heavy.

And a lot of times you can use a bench vice. You see that there's some slats here. You can actually get a large wrench on this or you can put it in a vice. Something that I found that works really well is actually using the hitch of your vehicle and you can put a wrench here and that way your torque wrench is moving in a nice easy way. You're not having to move it this way, it just makes it a little bit easier to get this torqued.

And that's nice too. The reason they don't come pre-torqued onto these is that way you can determine if you need a rise or a drop. So if you do plan on going from the two inch drop that we have here to the three quarter inch rise you are gonna have to take this off and re-torque it down. Now if you need a torque wrench we have those available here at Etrailer. You can generally rent them at an auto parts store. Check the torque setting on the ball. It is relatively high, so make sure you have a torque wrench that can go up that high. Now something else to kind of keep in mind if you're using a ball mount this shank length is definitely perfect for a normal size ball mount. But if you are doing any bumper towing, sometimes you will need that longer shank. So that's something to keep in mind. That way it passes all the way down through your bumper. So this again, for most ball mounts this is gonna work great. So once you've determined the right ball mount and ball combination for your trailer, all that's left to do is get that ball torque down your pin and clip in place and then we can start hooking up our trailer and the remaining components. That was a look at the Curt two inch ball mount with a 6,000 pound capacity and a one inch diameter shank.

  • Options For Carrying 4 Bikes And A Spare Tire On A 2026 Kia Carnival
Hi Raymond! I have a couple options you may be interested in, but that's quite a conundrum. I do know there are no 4 bike racks that can hold a spare tire as well as the bikes, but you may be able to use a cargo carrier, like the 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # e98874. This has 500 pounds of carrying capacity and will handle the weight of your bikes and the spare tire perfectly. Space is a little limited, but you could also add the Stromberg Carlson Bike Rack Adapter for...

  • Will Extended Shank Ball Mount Impact Towing Performance
Hey Brian! You might get some extra movement with an extended shank like # 80232, but at this length it won't have seriously adverse effects on towing. You can help mitigate that additional movement with an anti-rattle like the # e38FV. You will also need a hitch ball like # C40004 (2") or # C40007 (2-5/16") to complete the setup. Which bike rack are you running?

  • What Size Wrench Is Needed To Install The Curt 2" Hitch Ball?
Hey Kraig, Along with the 1-1/2" wrench or socket, most installers use a 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" wrench on the flats, or a larger adjustable wrench for the flat portion while the nuts are being torqued on the # C40004. What are you going to be using this to tow?

  • Ball Mount and Hitch Balls for 2018 Ford Escape Titanium
The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the anti-rattle device on the Solid Tow # DTSTBM6600 is right at 2", so it's not going to work if you've got only 1-1/2"; this also does not come with a 1-7/8" hitch ball. For these reasons it's really not going to be a good choice. What I recommend doing is using a regular rise/drop ball mount with a 6" drop like the Draw-Tite # 40346, which fits in a 2" receiver and uses hitch balls with 1" shank diameters. For a 1-7/8" hitch ball...

  • What Ball Mount Do I Need To Tow My Boat Trailer With My 2013 Toyota Sienna
Happy to help, Tom! Thanks for sharing your measurements, that makes this a lot easier to dial in. Based on what you provided, you’ll want a ball mount with about a 6" rise. The Curt Ball Mount # C45090 is a great fit for that. I’m going to assume your trailer has a 2" coupler, so you’d also want to pair that with a 2" Hitch Ball # C40004. To get everything hooked up, you’ll just need a hitch pin as well. The standard option is # RD23GR, or if you’d prefer a little extra security, there’s...

  • Will Reese Adjustable Ball Mount RP21141 Work On A 2024 Subaru Ascent?
Hello Danick, thanks for reaching out. The long shank on the Reese Adjustable Ball Mount # RP21141 is not going to change your tongue weight capacity. The ball mount still has a 5,000 lb rating. True, moving the ball away from the truck would slightly increase the tongue weight, but the # RP21141 ball mount is still a pretty standard size. As long as your stick to the 5,000 lb towing 500 lb tongue weight capacity you will be just fine. You will just need to get a ball to go with it. I...

  • Can I Replace the Bolt in My Surge Coupler to Secure it in Place?
I have a solution for you. I went ahead and reached out to my contact at Dexter Axle, and they recommended replacing the surge coupler with a standard weld on or bolt on straight tongue coupler. This is the safest way. They could not confirm for sure whether drilling a hole/installing a bolt would affect the stability or strength of the coupler. For a standard coupler, I recommend the Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # CT-3002-Z along with the 2" Hitch Ball # C40004. If you need a hitch...

  • Recommended 6 Inch Drop Ball Mount with Extended Length for a 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver
I recommend using the Curt Ball Mount part # D-28 which has a 6" drop. We do not have a 2" ball mount that offers exactly 6-1/2" of drop with an extended shank but since the vehicle will squat a bit while attached to the trailer, the 1/2" difference will not be an issue for you. This ball mount slides into a 2" receiver tube opening and works with hitch balls that have a 1" diameter shank. If you need a hitch ball I recommend using part # C40002 for 1-7/8", part # C40004 for 2", or part...

The longest fixed ball mount we offer is the Hidden Hitch Ball Mount part # 80232 which measures 15-3/4" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole. Please note, it does have a 6,000 lb weight capacity and can be used in either the rise position at 3/4" or drop position at 2". In order to add a 2" hitch ball you'd need the part # C40004. • What is Needed to Tow Safely With a 2011 Toyota Sienna XLE?
Happy to see that safety is important enough that you'd ask, and the answer is no, you do not need any additional equipment such as engine coolant in order to tow safely with your 2011 Toyota Sienna. Now, that does not necessarily mean something like a transmission cooler is a bad idea, as it will stop your Sienna from working quite so hard, but it is not necessary. I definitely recommend going with a 2 inch receiver, like the etrailer.com # e98862. This will have a higher towing capacity than the 1 1/4 hitches and also gives you more options for accessories like bike racks or cargo carriers. Whereas the hitch refers to the vehicle, the 2 inch coupler refers to the trailer. • Solution for Ball Mount to Move Trailer up Steep Driveway
The best solution would for a ball mount to help you move your trailer up a steel driveway would be one with a good amount of rise. • Does Hitch Ball Height Factor in to Determining Rise/Drop Calculation for Picking Out Ball Mount
When determining rise you don't need to factor in the height of the hitch ball unless it's a high rise ball. The rise calculation is done by taking the measurement from the top of the hitch opening down to the ground and comparing it to the distance from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler when sitting level. In relation to the ball mount the dimension would be from the bottom of the ball mount platform to the top of the shank of the ball mount like in the picture I attached. An...
