Will Extended Shank Ball Mount Impact Towing Performance

Updated 02/17/2026 | Published 02/10/2026

Question:

Does a longer shaft ball mount affect trailer handling when towing? Is it more prone to sway or bouncing? I understand that extenders reduce the weight capacidty of the hitch system. Im looking at a long shaft ball mount, not an extender. Toyota Tacoma with 6800 lb tow capacity towing a 3500 lb travel trailer that is just over 18foot long. Might need a long shaft ball mount to turning radius clearance for a tongue mounted bike rack.

Hey Brian! You might get some extra movement with an extended shank like # 80232, but at this length it won't have seriously adverse effects on towing. You can help mitigate that additional movement with an anti-rattle like the # e38FV. You will also need a hitch ball like # C40004 (2") or # C40007 (2-5/16") to complete the setup.

Which bike rack are you running?

No didn't have no problems with swaying when I told my little trailer. But it because it extends out and I can open up my swing out tire carrier and have access to the back of my Jeep.

I haven't experienced any issues with my hidden hitch. I bought it so I can open the rear door of my FJ Cruiser while towing my 2500 lb Aliner travel trailer and it works great.

I used this for better clearance with an oversized spare tire. There was an increase in bouncing and vibration with my 14ft offroad trailer until I replaced the hitch stabilizer
