Video Transcript for Hands-On with the 50mm Hitch Ball

What's up, everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be checking out this Brophy hitch ball, so it's gonna go on your ball mount to help you tow a trailer. Let's check it out. This is gonna go with your ball mount. We're gonna set it through there. Make sure you measure.

And it has an inch diameter here on the shank of the ball, (shank clanking) so that'll fit right in there. You're gonna make sure you have the appropriate ball for the ball mount. On the other side, we'll have a lock washer and a nut. Now, I'm just gonna do it to hand-tight because this is demonstration purposes. You definitely wanna tighten yours way down.

You wanna give it to the proper torque specifications before you go towing a trailer. To help you tighten down the ball, there's these flat spots on the side that a wrench can fit on. That way, you can use a torque wrench to finalize and torque the nut on the bottom. You can have a gross trailer weight rating of 8,000 pounds and a tongue weight rating of 800 pounds, so keep that in mind with what you're towing. And also keep in mind, if the ball mount doesn't line up with that.

So if the max gross trailer weight rating on the ball mount is 6,000, go by that, whatever has the least number. You don't want to stress out the whole system you got set up. The ball's got a chrome-plated finish on it, so it's not gonna rust or corrode if you leave it on the back of your vehicle all the time. The elements aren't gonna get to it. It might get scratched up a little bit when you load the coupler on there and actually tow the trailer, but that just happens when you use them.

Overall, I do think this is a good option for your ball mount. Make sure that you check your coupler on your trailer, that you need a two-inch ball, and then also, measure the diameter of the hole on your ball mount to make sure this is gonna fit and it's one inch. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out and hope this helps.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch, Gooseneck Hitch, and Sway Control for 2007 Ram 3500 Flatbed Chassis
For your 2007 Dodge RAM 3500 HD Flat Bed Crew Cab with dually chassis there is not a B&W trailer hitch receiver available. Instead, I recommend you use the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class IV - 2" # 41936 rated for 1,200 lbs tongue weight or 12,000 lbs towing. If you need a stronger receiver or one that can use weight distribution, I recommend the Draw Tite Class V # 41947 rated for 15,000 lbs towing without weight distribution or 16,000 lbs towing with...

  • What Hitch Ball Size Do They Use in Europe
We currently carry four different size hitch balls which are 1-7/8", 50mm, 2", and 2-5/16". The most common hitch ball size in Europe is 50mm for which you can use part # 63912 if you need a 3/4" diameter shank or part # EH53C-C if you need a 1" diameter shank. In order to be sure you are using the correct size hitch ball you will want to look at the top of the trailer coupler as it will be stamped into this location.

  • Adjustable Ball Mount With 50mm Ball For A 2002 Toyota 4 Runner
Hey Fred, You can absolutely get that set up going for your 4 runner! We have a 50mm hitch ball, # EH53C-C, which can be used with our adjustable ball mount # FHG25VR. Assuming you have a 2" hitch on your 4 runner this will work great for you and allow you to install the 50mm ball yourself. The biggest thing for any drop/rise hitch is making sure you get the right size for your application. If you do not know how much rise or drop you need I have attached an article for you below to...

  • Availability of 50 mm Hitch Ball
We have one standard 50 mm hitch ball that you could use with the Brophy part # EH53C-C but the one you mentioned wouldn't be ideal as the bottom portion of the ball is cut flat like you noticed. The 50 mm size is pretty rare here in the US which is why we don't have a lot of options.

  • Recommendation for a 50mm Ball to Use with European Thule Bike Rack
The 50mm ball size is probably the most common across the pond so I am certain your European EasyFold fits that size. The US version, # TH903202, just fits into a 1-1/4 or 2 inch hitch receiver so the 50mm ball doesn't come up much. For a 50mm ball I recommend # 63912 since it costs a little less than the Brophy but you could use # EH53C-C as well.

  • Ball Mount and 50mm Hitch Ball to Allow Use of European Ball-Mounted Bike Carrier
The ball mount you purchased was part C45572 and this is for a 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch. This ball mount has an integrated 2-inch hitch ball that cannot be removed and this is why it is incompatible with the towing style bike rack that I believe you have. Towing racks can either mount on the shank of the ball mount, like racks # S64664 and # C18013 or they can be like yours, which uses a hitch ball as a "bolt" to secure the rack to the ball mount. We do offer 50mm hitch balls, shown on...

  • Recommended Ball Mount and Hitch Ball for European Trailers
Thank you for your service. I would be happy to make some recommendations for you. An American style ball mount will work fine when we pair it with a 50mm Hitch Ball on a local trailer in Germany as long as you have a U.S. style trailer hitch on your vehicle with a 2 inch by 2 inch receiver. The look is different, but the function is the same. I'd suggest the Convert-a-Ball Adjustable-Height Ball Mount, # TK5007. This will give you up to a 10 inch drop or a 9 inch rise to allow you...

  • Can a Trailer With a 50MM Coupler Be Safely Towed With a 1-7/8" Hitch Ball?
You should never use a hitch ball which does not match the coupler size. You will need to source a 50mm Hitch Ball # EH53C-C to safely tow your camper. While some others may have been able to tow a trailer which has a 50mm coupler with a 1-7/8" hitch ball if it had slipped off the ball due to a bump in the road they could then be sued for negligence for any damages caused by the incident since they used a product not specified by the manufacturer.

  • 7-Way Trailer Connector Recommendation for 2016 Subaru Outback
I'd be happy to help you with that. You'd need to begin with a trailer taillight converter harness like part # 118467. How to proceed from there will depend on if your trailer is equipped with electric brakes. If it is not, all you'd need is the 4 pole to 7-way adapter, part # 37185 which would permanently install on the rear of the vehicle. The adapter plugs into the 4-pole provided by the # 118467 and has 3 additional wire leads. The white wire grounds to the vehicle frame or chassis....

  • Coupler and Tire Size on 50s Era Bantam Utility Trailer
A trailer coupler will often be stamped to indicate the compatible ball size but on an older 50s-era trailer there's no guarantee this is there or that it is still visible after all those years. Hitch balls offered nowadays include five different sizes but a small utility trailer such as a 50s Bantam is likely to use one of the smallest sizes, either a 1-7/8-inch like # 19256 or perhaps a 50mm size like # 63912. Note that you also need to match the hitch ball shank size to the ball mount...

The 50mm Hitch Ball # EH53C-C will work for your European spec Thule Bike Rack and can be attached to your 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee using the Convert-A-Ball Ball Mount # AMSC2. To secure the ball mount to your vehicle I recommend the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock # e98882 due to its stainless steel construction keeping it from corroding over time. I included videos for each of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.

  • Looking for a 50mm Trailer Hitch Ball
We do have some 50mm balls: # 63912 # EH53C-C # 337RB50MM The bigger issue you are likely to run into is the electrical requirements of a European trailer versus one for the US market. In Europe they have separate circuits for all the lights on a trailer. Here in the states we have one circuit for both left brake light and turn signal, one circuit for both right brake light and turn signal, one circuit for all running/tail lights, and one ground. Five, 6, and 7-Ways have additional circuits....
