Video Transcript for A Closer Look at the 100-Amp MIDI Fuse Kit for Redarc Smart Start Battery Isolator

Today, we're going to be taking a look at Redarc's midi fuse kit. These are available in forty, sixty or one hundred amps. Many of our customers compare these to standard automotive fuses or circuit breakers and the main reason you would want to opt for this fuse over a standard automotive fuse is that the fuse attachment points are screwed down. This ensures that there will be a good connection between our fuse and our circuits for those high amp drawing components.Circuit breakers can typically build heat under long periods of exposure to high amperage draw, which could cause extra resistance and potentially cause that circuit breaker to pop, requiring you to disconnect it to reset it. Whereas these, don't build as much heat and are going to be more suited for those high amp applications these are going to be heavy duty fuses that will give you overload protection for whatever circuits you install them on. What this means, is if you have a short or fault on a circuit on the other side of the fuse, rather than it causing damage to the wiring and circuits on your vehicle, it simply opens the fuse, allows you to make the repairs that you need to fix that wiring and then simply replace it with a new fuse. The kits come with two fuse holders, four fuses and four ring terminals to make connections for your wiring to connect to your fuses on each side.

To mount it, you will need to provide your own screws, they don't come included with the kit. We just use some self tapping screws here, to get this one mounted. Depending on where you mount it, you may want to use a different type of attachment point.Typical applications use this form for high current drawing components, such as numerous lights inside of a camper or RV. We're using ours with our BCDC charging system on our camper here. And, that completes our look at Redarc's midi fuse kit..

Just what I needed, but great quality compared to other brands.

by:

Very disappointed in this Redarc product. This fuse kit is recommended specifically for use with the redarc 40Amp BCDC battery charger. The Charger recommends 6 Guage or 4 Guage wiring to be used, I my case had to use 4 Guage due to distance from car's battery. However the provided crimp connectors are too small and the housing does not have space to accommodate a 4 guage crimp connector.

To salvage the situation, had to buy separate 4 Guage crimp connectors, use a dremel to grind off some of the plastic housing and then use a velcro strap to keep the housing closed because the housing wasn't designed for a 4 Guage connection.

Midi fuse is working great. I did use a #4 cable on wiring.

by:

I brag about this to other van owners. It gives me more charge from the alternator to my batteries than other brands or products. 40+ amps over about 14 feet of probably six gauge wire from a 130 amp alternator.
Stellar tech support!

by:

Tried to cheap out and not use the recommended Redarc fuses during my 40 amp BCDC install. Bad decision. Similar fuses overheated and failed but not before melting some of the wiring. When I repaired damage I used the recommended Redarc fuses and have had no further issues.

by:

This Redarc FK60 fuse kit seems well designed. Inclusion of lugs and extra fuses is very nice for installation and maintenance. Presuming the fuses function properly, this should be a solid and durable addition to a quality electrical instrument install.

by:

Installed per charger instructions to protect charger

by:

Product works for # 6 cable but not for # 4 cable

by:

Worked as advertised

That said, this now means you must run a wire from the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger to the start battery in your vehicle. The correct size wire to use will vary based on total length as you mentioned. I recommend you go pretty large so you don't have to worry about issues with length or voltage drop.
