Calculating Tongue Weight on a 2023 Toyota RAV4
Question:
With regard to the tongue weight rating of a hitch, if you are using a hitch bike rack that sticks off the back, do you just add the weight of the rack and bikes and use their total weight, or do you have to consider the length of the lever arm/the distance of the bikes from the receiver, and use a formula to calculate tongue weight?

Expert Reply:
When calculating tongue weight you will want to add up the individual weights of the bike rack and bikes. You don't have to consider the length it sticks out.
The best hitch for your 2023 Toyota RAV4 is the etrailer Hitch item # e23ZR. It has a tongue weight capacity of 600 lbs but you will always want to go off of whatever your owners manual says. Adding this hitch won't increase your Toyota's capacity.
If you are planning on towing you will also need a wiring harness item # C56434 and a ball mount kit item # C45534.
