I am considering purchasing a 2014 Equinox. I have a 17foot Boston Whaler that I will be towing and was wondering if the 4 cylinder is capable of doing so.

I found an online copy of the owners manual for the 2014 Chevy Equinox from Chevy and have the towing information for you. The models with the 2.4 liter motor have a gross trailer weight capacity of 1,000 pounds if the trailer does not have brakes or 1,500 pounds if the trailer does have brakes.
The gross combined weight rating, which is the most the vehicle and trailer can weigh when loaded with cargo, fuel, passengers, and any accessories is 5,787 pounds for front wheel drive models and 5,952 pounds for all wheel drive versions.
The manual also states that you should not do any towing during the first 500 miles of driving the vehicle. If the vehicle already has 500 miles or more on it then you could start towing. But during the first 500 miles of towing the speed should be limited to 50 miles per hour.
The Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 36408 is rated for 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight but because the vehicle is rated lower you will need to go by the lower rating. You will just need to add the ball mount and a ball and wiring to the vehicle to complete the towing set up.
For a ball you can use # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch or # 19258 for a 2 inch. For trailer wiring you can use # 118494. I have linked a video showing a typical installation for you.
