Maximum Towing Capacity of 2014 Chevy Traverse
Published 05/22/2019 >
Question:
I have a 2014 Chevy traverse. It is properly equipped with a factory towing package. My wife and I were looking at buying a camper that weighed 4700 pounds. So out of that 5200 pounds do I also have to minus the stuff thats in the the vehicle? Or is the 5200 pounds just at the trailer hitch? Or can I replace my factory trailer hitch with a higher one that goes may be up to 6200 pounds? Please let me know your thoughts thank you very much for your help.

I took a look at an online copy of the owner's manual for a 2014 Chevy Traverse and you are correct that the maximum towing capacity with the trailer towing package is 5,200 lbs. This is different than the GCWR, which is 10,250 lbs for a 2WD or 10,450 lbs for a 4WD.
The GCWR is the weight - in total - that your Traverse and trailer can be combined. What I recommend doing is completely loading up your Traverse and going to a weigh station to weigh it. Subtract that amount from 10,250 lbs if you have a 2WD or 10,450 lbs if you have a 4WD and you will have the largest amount a fully loaded trailer can weigh.
Additionally, you do need to go by the lowest-rated component, so the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75528 with its 5,000 lb towing capacity and 750 lb tongue weight capacity would limit your trailer towing capacity to 5,000 lbs.
