Is Stabilizing Strap Required for Curt Hitch on 2017 Toyota Prius

Im reading conflicting information about the requirement of the stabilizing strap for the warranty in the QandA section. Pro, Mike L. posted: Curt has recently changed their stance on requiring the # 18050 stabilizing strap. At one time, using the strap was a requirement for their warranty, but that is no longer the case. The strap is no longer required. However, I just read the installation sheet for this hitch, and it says WARNING: **FAILURE TO PROPERLY SUPPORT NON-TRAILER LOADS WILL VOID PRODUCT WARRANTY **inch Also, Jacob W said that the support strap IS required for the warranty. Who is right Mike, or Jacob?? For me, a big reason for getting a trailer hitch is to avoid placing ANY hardware on my HATCH when transporting bikes. So, this support strap defeats the purpose. My primary concern is that the hitch or my cars support structure will be compromised without the strap. I care less about the warranty. But all the concern over the strap is very concerning. Can someone please tell me definitively if the strap is necessary for the warranty, AND will I compromise my car by not using the strap?

You do not need to use the Curt Cam Buckle Stabilizing Strap # 18050 with the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11473 that fits your 2017 Toyota Prius.

Curt did previously require the use of the strap with accessories like bike racks to maintain the warranty of their hitches, but that is no longer the case. So you do not have to use the strap for the warranty and you will not compromise your Prius without the strap. It was simply for added stabilization but by no means is going to be harmful if you do not use a strap.

The Draw Tite hitch part #24966 is a fit for the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime and would be a great hitch for carrying a bike rack as long as it's a Class I hitch compatible bike rack.

For a Class I hitch like yours we do not recommend the use of hitch adapters since they cut the capacity of the hitch they are installed on by 50 percent and add quite a bit of movement. Instead we'd recommend a bike rack like the Thule Camber…
