What is the Difference Between the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 and the P3 Brake Controllers

Im looking at either the P3 or the Prodigy P2. The major differences I see are 3 axis accelerometer in the P2 vs 1 axis in the P3. Looks like that would essentially eliminate alignment issues. The other difference seems to be the display capability and fault detection. Am I missing something here?

Actually, the P3 now has the upgraded axis accelerometer like the P2. The Tekonsha P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195, will work with both electric over hydraulic brakes on the trailer as well as electric brakes. It has a menu option on the display that allows the user to switch between the two systems. I have included a link to the installation details for the P3.

The P2, # 90885, will also work with both electric brakes and electric over hydraulic brake systems but the mode is selected differently since it doesn't have the same kind of display as the P3. The P2 is more of an entry level brake controller; easy to use, easy to mount, and it works well. That is probably why it is one of our most popular and highest rated brake controllers. Will the p3 install on a 2014 ram big Horn? Or should I go with the p2. It looked to me there might be an issue with the wiring harness for the p3 and the 2014 ram

The same wiring harness is used for both the Tekonsha P2 and P3 Brake Controllers, and either option will fit and work well on your 2014 Ram. I like the P3 a little better because of its great display. Regardless of which model you go with, the Tekonsha # 3023-P will allow for an easy plug-and-play install.

I definitely recommend going with the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. I think it has a better display (easier to read messages, settings, etc) and I really like the option to store different settings. For your Tacoma you just need to add the Plug-In Harness # 3031-P to allow for a simple plug-and-play installation.

I would definitely go with the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. It's just a nicer controller with a larger display for easy-to-read settings, etc. For your Mercedes GLS you just need the Plug-In Harness # 3066-P.

To connect a P2 # 90885 or P3 # 90195 to your 2017 Chevy Silverado you just need the Adapter # 3016.

If your 2008 GMC Sierra has the factory 7-Way then there is a wiring harness up under your dash that you will splice the pigtail from the P3 # 90195 to. If you don't have the factory 7-Way then you're going yo need to also install either part # PK11898 or part # 30955.

@Rmannon Congrats on the new ride! For your 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee you will want the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness # TK28ER (this part number comes with the vehicle specific pigtail for a simple install). The reason why I am saying the P3 over the P2 is because it has an LCD screen over the P2's LED screen which makes it easier to read and see, the P3 has more advanced diagnostics, the P3 has the full EOH setting as where the P2 is limited, and you can have up to 5 profiles in the P3 if you have multiple trailers. I set-up all of my friends and family members with the P3 and they have had nothing but great things to say about it. What kind of trailer are you pulling?
