Diesel or Gasoline Heating and Hot Water System for a Camper Van

Updated 10/27/2026 | Published 10/23/2026

Question:

I'm converting a camper van and want to avoid using propane. I'd like one system that can heat the living area and provide hot water for showers and the kitchen sink, even when we're camping without hookups. I've been looking at the Timberline systems. Would one of these work, and what's the difference between the diesel and gasoline versions?

Hey Jason! The difference between the Timberline 1.0 systems really comes down to the fuel they use. Both provide cabin heat and on-demand hot water without propane, so I recommend choosing the version that matches your van's fuel type:

-Timberline 1.0 Diesel Heating and Hot Water System # TL798MR

-Timberline 1.0 Gasoline Heating and Hot Water System # TL898MR

Both have the same 17,000 BTU heating capacity, so you won't be sacrificing heating performance by choosing one fuel type over the other. They also have a supplemental 120V electric heating element for use when you're connected to shore power.

For your conversion, either system will give you heating and hot water from one setup without needing separate propane appliances. The modular design also gives you flexibility when planning your installation.

What kind of van are you converting?

Thanks! I'm converting a diesel Mercedes Sprinter 2500. I like the idea of using the van's existing fuel tank instead of adding propane. Can the Timberline pull fuel directly from that tank?

@Jason yes, the diesel Timberline # TL798MR can use fuel from your Sprinter's diesel tank. You'll need a dedicated fuel pickup or an appropriate auxiliary fuel connection, depending on how your van is equipped. This lets you run the heating and hot water system without installing a separate diesel tank.
