Adding Solar Power to an RV Without More Roof Space

Published 10/27/2026

Question:

We've been doing more boondocking in our motorhome, and I'd like to add more solar to keep our batteries charged. The problem is our roof is already pretty crowded with the AC units and vents. We're also thinking about replacing our patio awning. Is there an awning that could give us some additional solar power without taking up more roof space?

Hey Matt! I recommend the Girard GG 750 Solar Fabric RV Awning for your setup. It has solar cells built into the awning fabric, so you can generate additional power for your batteries without taking up any more room on your roof. You can choose from the following based on the available mounting space:

-Girard GG 750 Solar Awning - 8' - 480W # LC875DV

-Girard GG 750 Solar Awning - 10' - 600W # LC975DV

-Girard GG 750 Solar Awning - 11'8" - 720W # LC475DV

-Girard GG 750 Solar Awning - 13'6" - 840W # LC675DV

-Girard GG 750 Solar Awning - 15'4" - 960W # LC775DV

These are complete motorized awnings with mounting brackets, controls, and a wind sensor that automatically retracts the awning when it detects excessive movement. The solar fabric rolls into a protective cassette when the awning is closed.

You'll also need a compatible solar charge controller to connect the awning to your battery system, which is sold separately. Solar output will depend on sunlight and how the awning is positioned.

What year and model is your motorhome?

Thanks! It's a Tiffin Allegro. One thing I was wondering, will the solar panels still charge my batteries when the awning is rolled up, or does it have to be extended?

@Matt the solar fabric needs to be extended and exposed to sunlight to generate power. When the awning is rolled up inside its cassette, it won't produce usable solar power. You'll still be able to use your existing rooftop panels when the awning is retracted, so this works as an additional source of solar power when you're parked and have the awning out.
