Can the Dometic Climate Control Gateway Be Bypassed to Control the AC with a Thermostat?

Updated 10/21/2026 | Published 10/20/2026

Question:

Can I this and just let the customer control the AC via the thermostat? They had a lightening strike that has disabled their ACs. I ordered a new control board and thermostat but before I install them, I would like to test removing this to see if its the root cause of the failures.

Hey Dave!

The Dometic Climate Control Gateway # DMC32RR is what allows the air conditioners to communicate with the RV's central control system, such as iN-Command.

If you're switching to a standalone thermostat, you may be able to eliminate the gateway entirely, provided the new control board and thermostat are compatible and support independent operation.

Since the RV experienced a lightning strike, I wouldn't rule out the gateway being damaged. However, removing it won't necessarily tell us whether it's the problem, since the AC may still need a compatible control setup to operate.

I see you've already ordered the replacement control board # DMC63ZR and gateway # DMC32RR, so you're on the right track with troubleshooting. Before you install everything, could you tell me the model numbers of the AC units and which thermostat you're using? I'd like to make sure the system can operate without the gateway before recommending that you bypass it.

Hi Jerry, thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, I don't know which thermostat is installed in this unit. It's about 40 miles away and the owner is not with it. I should have captured those details on my 1st or 2nd visit there! The AC is designed to work with the control board and thermostat that I ordered without the gateway. So, I will first try to remove the gateway and test the unit with the thermostat only. The In-Command doesn't add much value other than to turn it on/off. If the AC works, then I know it's the gateway and can just install that. If the AC does not work, I will install the gateway and test. If the AC does not work, I will install the new control board, thermostat and gateway and bill the customer. ;>) These things are far too complicated for what they do.

@DaveH Haha completely understandable. I agree, comfort isn't very convenient, but I'm glad to help! No matter what works and doesn't work, I'd love to hear back on how it went to better assist others in the future that may have the same question!
