How Do I Add Flat Tow Lights to a Vehicle Without Splicing Into Its Wiring?

Published 09/24/2026

Question:

I am flat towing a vehicle behind my motorhome and do not want to splice into the vehicles factory wiring for the brake and turn signals. Can I use the Blue Ox Receiver Mounted Tow Light Kit BX88467 instead?

Hey Bob, thanks for reaching out. Yes, the Blue Ox Receiver Mounted Tow Light Kit # BLU959GR is a nice option when you want separate tow lights without tapping into the towed vehicle's factory wiring. The light bar slides into a 1-1/4" receiver hitch on the back of the vehicle and provides the tail, brake, and turn signal functions needed while flat towing. This also keeps you from having to install bulbs inside the factory taillight housings or deal with vehicle-specific wiring and diodes.

The main thing I recommend verifying is that your vehicle has a 1-1/4" receiver. You will also need to route the kit's wiring from the rear of the vehicle up to the motorhome connection.

What vehicle are you planning to flat tow?
