Can I Change from 2 1/4" Long Shackle Straps to 3 1/8" Long Shackle Straps When Upgrading My Trailer

Updated 09/23/2026 | Published 09/14/2026

Question:

I am upgrading my suspension hardware on an 18’ tandem axle trailer. Your kit K71-359-00 looks like the correct kit except my shackle links are 3 1/8” oc and the kit includes 2 1/4” oc links. Do I need to buy the longer links or can you swap the smaller ones out in the kit with the longer ones?

Hi Andrew,

I wouldn't suggest changing to 2 1/4" shackles because it will significantly change the angles of your suspension, which will affect the ride. Thankfully, we have a suspension upgrade kit for 3 1/8" long shackle straps, which is the MORryde Suspension Upgrade Kit for Tandem Axle Trailers part # MR76ZR. The shackle straps in this kit are heavy duty at 1/2" thick and pair perfectly with the included 9/16" wet bolts (with zerk fittings) and bronze bushings.

What kind of trailer are you upgrading the suspension on?

Thank you Claire. I ordered the MORyde kit that you suggested, just waiting for it to come in so I can get started on it. Hopefully this will last longer than the original setup that uses nylon bushings, I have replaced those twice. The trailer is a 2024 RC enclosed cargo trailer that is used five days a week for my delivery business.

@AndrewC With the trailer being towed so often, it's a good thing you upgraded the suspension components! Bronze bushings last way longer than nylon, rule of thumb is that they need grease every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Since you're towing five days a week it'll be something to keep in mind.
